my favorite trope right now is probably traitor begging for forgiveness. but not just that

traitor who can't stick to their original goal. traitor who gets attached and begins to actually care for the people they're among despite the way they're supposed to be their enemies. traitor who feels their mission breathing down their neck with every laugh, every fond look, every hand that reaches down to help them up from the ground.

traitor who may have been lying but the friendship was real. the friendship was genuine. but how could they expect the others to believe that?

traitor who gets exposed for what they've done. traitor who is forced to choose between their mission and the family they've built.

or, even better.

traitor who reveals that they're a traitor so that the group can just let go. a begging whisper, a confession, because they are leaving and the others cannot follow. the traitor who lies and says it was all fake because they need to sever the connection, stamp out hope, to keep the others safe. to keep them alive.

and the friend who refuses to believe it. the friend who challenges it. the friend who doesn't give up even in the face of everything. who is ready to accept that it may have all been a lie, but they still love the traitor anyways. the friend who still knows the traitor is good. the friend who stands in the face of the traitor's mission defiantly.

the friend who begs to know what it is they have to fight for to make the traitor stay. who they have to vanquish if it means the traitor is free from their mission.

the friend who goes down with a smile because they may die at the traitor's hands, but they love them so much that, is it really such an awful way to die?

jay gillion parallels. both have this crisis of having to decide their own fate and who they want to be— having to pick their course, choose their path.

but the difference is that jay was unsure what path to pick and conflicted, while gillion was always told a specific fate and never presented any other option to begin with

jrwi riptide is so good like. a bunch of barely-adults sail around somewhat randomly and save a bunch of people but insist upon calling themselves pirates while having both incredibly emotional and ridiculously funny adventures. one minute they're dueling for honour and then they're dressed up as literal clowns. their crew is entirely random and it's brilliant. the worldbuilding is also mindblowing??? like edison kingdom... holy shit? great podcast. who gave them the right. i love them so much
