Modern Pool and Courtyard Round Out Edwardian Home. Quite Literally.
The Kennedy Nolan Caroline House is an award-winning renovation and addition to a residential home in Melbourne. Challenged with reinvigorating an Edwardian family house, Kennedy Nolan architects added a swimming pool and pavilion in its courtyard. The result is a sophisticated and stylish residence that balances elegance and comfort with repeated round and curved forms. Kennedy Nolan Caroline…

Australian Interior Design Awards 2021 Shortlist
Australian Interior Design Awards 2021
The highly anticipated 2021 Australian Interior Design Awards shortlist has been announced, with 190 projects recognised for excellence in interior design.
As Australia’s eminent design program, the industry-based awards acknowledge the exceptional interior design work produced across the residential, commercial and public sectors, both domestically and internationally.
Delivered by the Design Institute of Australia (DIA) and Architecture Media’s Artichoke magazine, the 2021 campaign marks the awards’ eighteenth year, and a return to the regular program following the successful execution of the first-ever digital broadcast in 2020.
The jury, made up of some of the countries most esteemed interior designers, noted that this year’s shortlist highlighted the ingenuity of Australia’s design community, with featured practices embracing the challenges presented by the pandemic, resulting in a transformation of traditional typologies that reject the ways of the past for something entirely new.
The 2021 jury, convened by Geraldine Maher, Director of Geraldine Maher Design, includes:
Madeleine Blanchfield, Director, Madeleine Blanchfield Architects (NSW) • Caroline Diesner, Principal, Hassell (QLD) • Ryan Genesin, Director, Genesin Studio (SA) • Yasmine Ghoniem, Principal, YSG (NSW) • Patrick Kennedy, Founding Director, Kennedy Nolan (VIC) • George Livissianis, Founder, George Livissianis (NSW) • Rachael McCarthy, Studio Director, Bates Smart (VIC) • Adele Winteridge, Founding Director, Foolscap Studio (VIC)
The full list of final award recipients will be presented at the Awards Announcement Dinner, which will be held at the Hyatt Regency in Sydney on Friday, 3 September 2021.

Photos of this home were taken just eight months after completion, but significant vines are already growing across the property’s walls. Photo – Derek Swalwell
When you buy a property next to a lake, framing water views seems like the natural design response. However, when the view is located in the opposite direction of the sun, a design dilemma ensues.
Kennedy Nolan architects were faced with this predicament in a recent Ballarat project, calling for a masterful design response. Their solution – raise the home’s facade up a half-step to take advantage of the lake, while adding in north-facing clerestory windows throughout. These windows ensure ample natural light (important for navigating Ballarat’s cold winters), while the elevation facilitates lake views and privacy away from the adjacent busy road.
Another key challenge was to give this brand new home a mid-century feel – almost impossible in a new build! Kennedy Nolan managed to achieve this in collaboration with their client, and builder Spence Construction.
‘The client liked American looking ‘Brady Bunch’ style houses…. They also liked a subtropical vibe, which isn’t really appropriate for Ballarat,’ says Patrick Kennedy, co-founding director and principal at Kennedy Nolan. ‘In the end, we settled on a design with nostalgic elements to it with the stone and classic modernist feel, while managing proximity to the lake.’
Also important in achieving this established look was the garden, designed by Sally Gilbert Landscape.
‘They didn’t want anything ostentatious – they wanted something much more low-key – so it’s designed to fall back into the landscape over time,’ Patrick says.
Photos of this home were taken just eight months after completion, but lush vines and foliage can already be seen stretching across the property’s walls. ‘Everything was designed to establish pretty quickly, but also to grow over time,’ Patrick says. ‘There’s some big trees that will come up over the next 20 years.’
In the decades to come, the home’s natural materials will gracefully age and patina, walls will be engulfed in vines, and tree canopies will join in a green dome. A truly timeless home, destined to age gracefully!

Australian architecture practice @kennedy_nolan has boldly updated an early 1900s Edwardian house in inner #Melbourne with an expressive backyard extension of whimsical flair that swaps the rectilinear geometry of the existing building with an architectural language of curves and circles centred on a new pond-cum-swimming pool. Goldman Sachs just announced a new class of 509 managing directors — the largest class in the firm's history.
The position is one of the most coveted on Wall Street, one step below partner at the prestigious investment-banking firm. The firm now has 2,148 managing directors, making up 7.1% of the company's workforce.
It's also one of the youngest classes the bank has promoted — 44% are millennials, up from 30% in 2015.
Other headline stats about the class:

Here's the full statement:
The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. (NYSE: GS) today announced that it has selected a new class of Managing Directors, effective from January 1, 2018, the start of the firm's next fiscal year.
"Our new Managing Directors have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to our people, clients and culture during their tenures at the firm, and we wish them continued success as they take this important next step in their careers," said Lloyd C. The Australian Institute of Architects is the undisputed authority on great Australian homes and public buildings.
We’ve been running you through the shortlists of its prestigious awards programs in each state over the last few months, but now, the anticipation (partly) ends. We have the winners of the 2019 Victorian Architecture Awards.
Across 14 categories, 66 awards were given from a pool of 89 shortlisted projects and 248 overall entries. Victorian Chapter President Amy Muir reflected that these awards are a time for architects to celebrate and reflect on the inherent value that collaboration brings to the process of delivering holistic and compelling outcomes for the evolution of Victoria’s built landscape.
‘Successful built outcomes across our cities and regions are the product of collaborative relationships. It’s a team effort between clients, architects, consultants and contractors. Through this, we are able to build sustainable communities and create lasting legacies for our cities and regions,’ said Amy. ‘Regardless of the scale and scope of the project, it is always quality and longevity that determine the extent of the transformative impact architecture can have on people’s lives. Engendering positive social outcomes through architecture is increasingly important for the well-being of our communities.’
Projects that received an architecture award or a named award (and are listed below) will now progress to compete in the National Architecture Awards program – congrats!
