Letter dated 18th February 1402 from Thomas of Lancaster, Lieutenant of Ireland and later Duke of Clarence, to his father, Henry IV, detailing the dire circumstances his government was in due to lack of funding. From Royal and Historical Letters during the Reign of Henry the Fourth, King of England and of France, and Lord of Ireland, Vol. 1. A.D. 1399-1404.
The letter and Stephen le Scrope’s interview with the king seemed to produce little change. Six months later, his council would write to Henry that Thomas was now penniless, having sold all his jewels and plate to pay for the administration. A year later, Thomas returned to England, still struggling to fiance his administration.
TL:DR?

The Heart of London: Things to do in Westminster
Tumblr media
When people say they are going to London, they do not always realise just how many places that could mean. From London Heathrow Hotel in the west to the centrally located hotels near Lancaster Gate, these two places offer very different experiences of the capital. Technically, the City of Westminster is both a city and borough, and is now a core part of Central London - it was only recognised as a part of London in 1965 when the concept of Greater London was developed. Here are four things to do in this historical epicenter.
Park Grand Accommodation
A large portion of Park Grand accommodation can be found within the City of Westminster, including the Park Grand Hotel London, Hyde Park International, Park Grand London Paddington and more. Whether you make the most of the hotel’s dining facilities such as The Craven Lounge at Park Grand London Lancaster Gate, or enjoy these hotels’ proximity to the rest of the amazing tourist attractions on this list, a stay in the Park Grand plays a vital role in the City of Westminster experience.
Buckingham Palace and The Changing of the Guards
You can’t stay in the same borough as Queen Elizabeth II and not stop by, right? This royal palace has been visited since it was built in 1703 and remains a top London attraction for first-time visitors to the city. Part of the appeal of the palace is the tradition and ceremony, which is best captured in the Changing of the Guards ceremony, which takes place in front of the palace. Watch and admire as the Queen’s guards perform a traditional ceremony in their red coats and bearskin hats, featuring triumphant bands and plenty of marching.
Shopping
If you have traveled to London for a bit of retail therapy, then the City of Westminster is the area you want to visit. Here, you will find Oxford Street, Regent’s Street, Carnaby Street, Liberty London, Bond Street, Savile Row… Basically, all the internationally recognized shopping outlets your heart could possibly desire. Selfidges on Oxford Street is an upscale department store which is jam-packed with all the latest designer collections, toys, gifts and more. You can visit designer flagships all around the area, including Prada, Gucci, Cartier and DOLCE & GABBANA on Old Bond Street. Not to be missed is the world-famous Hamleys on Regent’s Street for those with kids!
Royal parks
There are three royal parks which fall inside the City of Westminster: Hyde Park, St James’s Park and Regent’s Park. All three of these will satiate any hunger you have for nature, given that there is about 324 hectares of it between the three of them! Between Hyde Park Rose Garden and The Japanese Garden Island in Regent’s Park, you would struggle to run out of beauty to admire. Be sure to check each park’s schedules online to see whether there are any events lined up. For instance, Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park is a yuletide treat, and Taste of London in the Summertime is perfect for food-lovers.

London’s 5 Most Famous Parks
Tumblr media
London really is a magical city- filled with iconic buildings and nearly 2,000 years of history, there is something for everyone.
But one of the things that really sets London apart is its stunning green spaces. In fact, London is suspected to have the most green spaces of any city in Europe! And that’s really saying something.
If you’re looking to explore London’s very best parks then make sure you book a room at the Park Grand Lancaster Gate Hotel London; one of the best hotels in the city centre and one of the finest London hotels with breakfast.
Not only will your room be in close proximity to the best restaurants near Lancaster Gate Station, but you will also be just across the road from the first park on our list…
Kensington Gardens
Kensington Gardens is slap bang in the middle of the city, and is a truly magical spot. It’s home to the Royal Kensington Palace and some of the city’s best gardens like the Italian Gardens and the Sunken Garden.
This park was actually the inspiration for J.M Barrie to create the well loved Peter Pan books, and you’ll find several statues hidden in the woodlands to commemorate the author and his magical world.
Hyde Park
Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens actually share a border and both offer something pretty different. Hyde Park offers more grassy areas, and some beautiful sparse woodland to explore.
You’ll also find the famous Serpentine boating lake that separates it from Kensington Gardens, where you can walk along the water's edge, or rent a row boat and go for a paddle.
Hyde Park is one of the city’s favourites, and a great place to spend an afternoon- all just down the road from the best 4 star hotels Lancaster UK has to offer; The Park Grand Lancaster Gate.
Kew Gardens
Kew Gardens is one of the city’s best green spaces if you are a horticulturalist, or really into your flora. Home to what is said to be the largest living plant collection on earth, this stunning garden will blow you away, and keep you entertained for a full day.
You can climb the Grand Pergola for a stunning view, get lost in the arboretum, explore the botanic gardens, walk in the canopy and explore the incredible greenhouses. There really is a lot to see and do at this UNESCO World heritage site.
Richmond Park
Richmond Park spans an incredible 2,500 acres making it London’s largest park. It is home to a large herd of deer and many other species, and has actually been designated a site of ‘special scientific interest’ thanks to its plentiful inhabitants.
There are plenty of activities on offer here, so get out there and explore this amazing natural space.
Greenwich Park
Greenwich Park is one of London’s oldest and offers a lot to the explorers out there. There are several museums in close proximity to the park and you can snag an incredible view of the dockland area of the city from the top of the hill.
Green London
So there you have it; just a few of the incredible parks in london.
Get out there and enjoy some peace in nature, take short breaks from the hustle and bustle of the city, and explore these amazing green spaces to calm the soul.

Free Things To Do In London In 2022 We Bet You Never Knew
Tumblr media
There are so many free things you can do in London, so many that you arguably wouldn’t have to spend a penny on visiting sights and attractions for the entire duration of your stay.
There are no fewer than 30 to 40 free museums, galleries and exhibitions in London, ranging from the more grandiose Natural History Museum and Science Museum to the relatively unknown Queen’s House and Museum of the Order of St John.
And then you’ve got the Royal Packs and near-endless sights you can experience for free from the street.
Without further ado, here are free things you can do in London in 2022!
1: Free museums and galleries
Most of London’s many museums are free. As of 2022, at least 30 to 40 museums and galleries are 100% free of charge to visitors. There are often ticketed events and exhibitions within the museum, but these are optional and by no means required to experience the museum.
We recommended creating a shortlist of a few museums and visiting 2 to 3 in one day (beware, the Science Museum and Natural History Museums are large!) Hotels in Hyde Park London are just a stone’s throw from London’s museum districts.
Here’s a list of London’s free museums and galleries:
●     British Museum
●     National Gallery
●     Museum of London
●     Tate Modern
●     Tate Britain
●     Natural History Museum
●     Science Museum
●     Royal Academy of Arts
●     Imperial War Museum and the Churchill War Rooms
●     National Maritime Museum
●     Victoria and Albert Museum
●     Guildhall Art Gallery and Roman Amphitheater
●     Wellcome Collection
●     Queen’s House
●     Sir John Soane's Museum
●     Horniman Museum and Gardens
●     London Mithraeum
●     British Library
●     National Army Museum
●     Royal Air Force Museum
●     The Wallace Collection
●     Museum of London Docklands
●     Young V&A
●     Bank of England Museum
●     Whitechapel Gallery
●     Serpentine Galleries
●     Museum of the Order of St John
●     National Portrait Gallery
●     Photographer's Gallery
●     Saatchi Gallery
 2: London’s Parks and Gardens
All of London’s eight Royal Parks are free to everyone, including Hyde Park, Richmond Park, Greenwich Park, The Regent's Park, St. James's Park, Bushy Park, Green Park and Victoria Tower Gardens.
There are other parks too, like Kensington Gardens, which are excellent for enjoying London greenery. The gardens are home to the Albert Memorial, Round Pond, the Peter Pan Statue, and the Diana Memorial Playground. Hotels near Lancaster Gate are perfectly positioned for exploring London’s many parks.
Greenwich Park is particularly exciting with its long, rolling hill that provides spectacular views of the London skyline. It also hosts the Royal Observatory, home to the Meridian Line, which marks Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). Eat at some restaurants in Bayswater before hopping on any of the numerous nearby tube stations to Greenwich.
Another important mention is the relatively new Sky Garden built inside The Fenchurch Building (also known as the Walkie-Talkie). The Sky Garden is an awesome indoor garden with spectacular panoramic views of the city.
3: London’s Markets
There are some amazing free London markets to explore, ranging from the world-famous Borough Market to the trendy Brick Lane Market. If you’re staying at Paddington hotels London, you’re just 20 minutes away from Borough Market.
Camden Market is also very well-known and is much-loved by foodies who peruse its endless culinary offerings. Maltby Street Market, Old Spitalfields Market, Portobello Road Market and Greenwich Market are all well worth a visit too.

Everything You Need To Know About Madame Tussauds In London
Tumblr media
Madame Tussauds is an international icon, with museums spread all around the world, each attracting visitors in their thousands. But did you know that the original, and the largest, waxworks museum is in London? One of the city’s premier tourist hot spots, the waxworks is a constant favourite, and is the most complete and extensive collection of wax work models found anywhere in the world. If you are planning on taking advantage of the points you have built up with your Paddington Court Rooms Loyalty Program then Madame Tussauds is an excellent way to spend the afternoon, before winding down in comfort at the Park Grand London Lancaster Gate.
So let’s take a quick look at all the things you need to know before your visit to this world famous venue.
A Bit of Background
Marie Tussaude learned the art of wax sculpting when she was a child growing up in France, she actually created her first sculpture at the age of 16. She went on to tutor the sister of French King Louis XVI, before upping sticks and travelling Europe with her collection. She finally settled in London, on Baker Street no less, and opened her first museum with around 400 sculptures.
The original major attraction was the ‘Chamber of Horrors’, featuring victims of the French Revolution. Jump forward to today, and the museum has spread across the globe- from Australia to all over the USA. Largely a collection of important historical figures and celebrities, you can still find parts of the original collection, including a self portrait of Tussaud.
How to Get There
Now based just around the corner from Baker Street, the wax work museum is really centrally located. If you are staying at the Grand Royale London Hyde Park then you are within walking distance of the museum, as well as easy tube access. So let’s take a look at how to get there.
On the Underground
The nearest tube station is Baker Street, and you can access this station on the Circle, Bakerloo, Hammersmith & City, Jubilee or Metropolitan lines. Like I said, it's really accessible!
On the Train
Marylebone Station is the closest train station, it is approximately a ten minute walk.
On the Bus
Buses  2, 13, 18, 27, 30, 74, 113, 139, 189, 205, 274, and 453 will all get you within a five minute walk. Just jump off in the Marylebone area and make your way there!
There is plenty to see in the museum so here some of the highlights:
Star Wars
The Star Wars section is a favourite with kids and adults alike. Grab a seat with Han Solo in the cantina scene, experience the rush of lightsaber duelling with Darth Maul, Obi Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn, and even enter the Millennium Falcon’s cockpit with Chewy himself.
The Royals
The group of royal waxworks are always a favourite for selfie takers. Grab a picture with Kate and Wills, and maybe even the Queen!
The Starman Has Landed
See David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust immortalised and celebrate the legend.
Make sure you pre book your tickets in advance, as the museum can get very busy, and make the most of your stay at the Park Grand London Kensington by visiting one of London’s most loved attractions.
