RESIDENT EVIL → THE WESKER FAMILY
To the public, little is known of the families behind some of the world’s most renowned bioterrorists, but the question remains: did they play a role in causing their children to walk down the path that they did? Or are these individuals simply ambitious criminals with delusions of grandeur?
Tumblr media
For Diana Wesker (née Afanasyeva), her introduction into the bioweapons black market trade was upon discovering her employers were using her research into limb regeneration with salamanders to further their experiments in creating enhanced soldiers, instead of developing human therapies with which she was recruited for. Although the prospect of using biological weapons in the military did not appeal to her, the concept remained fascinating for her own selfish endeavours. Born on the 27th of October, 1963 in Sydney, Australia to Russian immigrant parents, Diana had harsh expectations placed upon her at a young age, ones that no matter how hard she tried she could never live up to. Her mother, Tatyana, was an unfeeling woman, absent for long stretches of time with little regard to how it affected her daughters, much more concerned with her craft as an accomplished opera singer. Viktor was no better. A strict man whose role as father and ballet master blurred, he pushed his girls to one day follow in his footsteps. Whilst Sofia enjoyed ballet, and went on to become a professional ballet dancer, Diana’s heart was set on going into the field of biology. She wished to make a name for herself, separate from her family – to which she succeeded.
Diana was married to former U.S. Marine, Dave Monroe, for only a year until he was declared dead in 1992 after succumbing to injuries sustained in a horrific car accident. Foul play was ruled out while Diana played the role of the grief-stricken widow, but in reality, she had snapped after years of mistreatment at her husband’s hands, and opted for something she could pass off as an accident to be free of him. For years she believed he was dead – and he was, legally – but that proved to not be the case when he found his way back into her life again in 1999. Unbeknownst to her, she had been lied to by the police and coroner, who were paid off by her employers when they took Dave’s body for themselves and used him as one of their first test subjects in developing supersoldiers. Before he could ever hurt her again, Diana’s second husband, Albert Wesker, tracked the man down, captured him and tortured him, before allowing Diana to get her violent and bloody revenge.
The origins of Albert Wesker’s involvement in bioterrorism, alongside his twin sister, Alex, are much different than that of Diana’s. The two hail from London, Canada, but unfortunately, they hold no memories of their lives there, nor what happened to their biological parents when they were eight years old. Agents of Oswell E. Spencer, an aristocratic billionaire and eugenicist, took the twins from their home and executed their parents as per Spencer’s orders. Albert and Alex were then placed in a home funded by the Spencer Foundation where they were given new names and a privileged upbringing. They had access to the best education possible, free to pursue whichever field they decided, but it was by no accident they both went into virology and bioengineering; at home, their adoptive parents – agents whom they believed to be their real parents – instilled them with the beliefs of Oswell E. Spencer, harbouring disdain for war and pestilence, and believing humans to be an evolutionary dead-end in need of a rebirth. They were only two of the hundreds of children “adopted” as part of what is known as Project W, a plan intended to develop an advanced race of human beings. The most promising candidates were headhunted by Umbrella Pharmaceuticals, the twins amongst them, where they went on to create bioweapons for the company founded by none other than the man who had handpicked them for his plan. The final stage of this was to infect the thirteen Spencer saw fit, however, only two survived; Albert received the intended effects, now possessing superhuman abilities, however, Alex was only offered more time to live due to her terminal degenerative illness.
In the summer of 1995, Diana was working undercover within Umbrella to gather development data on their projects for her company. Here, she had a chance encounter with Albert, an intelligence officer at the time, which permanently altered the course of her life. The two were never seen far from one another’s side, marrying in 1998, and they went on to become notorious in the bioweapons industry. The development of the Uroboros virus was where things took a turn for the worst. Although Diana’s infection was successful and she bore abilities that rivalled her husband’s, the plan itself did not succeed as they had hoped, and almost cost Albert his life at the hands of his former subordinates.
Now, they work within the shadows, with Diana declared missing and Albert believed to be dead. Their legacy, however, lives on with the mark they left on the world. As visionaries in their field, they influenced bioterror attacks carried out by countless individuals and organisations. In turn, they also inspired others to fight against such atrocities. One such person happens to be Albert’s son from a former relationship, Jake Müller, whose existence he was unaware of.

The evolving dramatic universe centered around "NCIS" is hitting a major milestone: 1,000 combined episodes.
The April 15 episode of the original "NCIS" (9 EDT/PDT) will reach the millennial mark propelled by the "NCISverse" of shows that now spans from "NCIS: Hawaii" to "NCIS: Sydney," on CBS and Paramount+. Franchise stars from past and present were on hand for a February celebration during the filming of the episode, which features crossover stars Daniela Ruah (from now-defunct "NCIS: Los Angeles") and Vanessa Lachey (from "NCIS: Hawaii").
Two new upcoming shows – "NCIS: Origins" and the still-untitled spinoff led by Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo – were also represented at the party.
"Now it's like our own Marvel universe within 'NCIS,' which is the ultimate testament of the power of this show," says Rocky Carroll, who has portrayed Leon Vance on "NCIS" since 2008.
'NCIS' (2003 - )
"NCIS," also known as "The Mothership," is a spinoff of creator Donald Bellisario's naval legal show "JAG," which aired on NBC in 1995-96 and for nine more seasons (1997-2005) on CBS.
Notable characters: Mark Harmon, the "NCIS" cornerstone as Leroy Jethro Gibbs, left in 2021 after nearly two decades. Other departed original characters include Weatherly's Anthony "Tony" DiNozzo, who departed in 2016 after 13 seasons, Pauley Perrette's Abby Sciuto, exiting in 2018 after 350 episodes, and David McCallum's Donald "Ducky" Mallard (the veteran actor died last year).
"NCIS" has been network TV's most-watched drama for the last five seasons with a team that includes Carroll, Sean Murray (Timothy McGee), Brian Dietzen (Jimmy Palmer), Wilmer Valderrama (Nicholas Torres), Katrina Law (Jessica Knight), Diona Reasonover (Kasie Hines) and Gary Cole (Alden Parker).
Seasons: 21
How to watch: CBS (Mondays 9 EDT/PDT); Paramount+; Netflix (first 15 seasons).
'NCIS: Los Angeles' (2009-23)
Notable characters: Ruah's Kensi Blye and the star pairing of Chris O'Donnell and LL Cool J, as G. Callen and Sam Hanna, respectively. Linda Hunt starred as Henrietta "Hetty" Lange and Eric Christian Olsen as Marty Deeks.
Seasons: 14
How to watch: PlutoTV, for purchase on iTunes.
Flavor: The first spinoff was an instant hit that played a crucial role in expanding the franchise "during its incredibly long run," says David Stapf, president of producer CBS Studios.
'NCIS: New Orleans' (2014-21)
Notable characters: Scott Bakula as Dwayne "King" Pride, CCH Pounder as Loretta Wade and Lucas Black as Christopher LaSalle.
Seasons: 7
How to watch: Paramount+, PlutoTV.
'NCIS: Hawai'i' (2021- )
Notable characters: Lachey became the franchise's first female and Asian American, lead as Special Agent in Charge Jane Tennant of the Pearl Harbor Field Office. Supporting stars include Alex Tarrant (Kai Holman), Noah Mills (Jesse Boone), Jason Antoon (Ernie Malik), Tori Anderson (Kate Whistler) and Yasmine Al-Bustami (Lucy Tara). Sam, LL Cool J's LA transplant, moved to "NCIS: Hawai'i" in Season 3.
Seasons: 3
How to watch: CBS (Mondays at 10 EDT/PDT), Paramount+.
Flavor: Set in paradise with unforgettable island surroundings and many crimes intertwined with Hawaiian lore – with an added dose of Cool J. Stapf says the actor will continue "hopefully, forever, or as long as he wants to do it."
'NCIS: Sydney' (2023- )
Notable characters: Michelle Mackey (Olivia Swann) heads the collaboration between the NCIS Sydney office and the Australian Federal Police led by Jim "JD" Dempsey (Todd Lasance). Originally conceived for Australian TV audiences but recruited to the American schedule during the Hollywood strike, "NCIS: Sydney" has proven its worth, fair dinkum, and was renewed for a second season in March.
Seasons: 1
How to watch:Paramount+
'NCIS: Origins' (CBS 2024-25)
Notable characters: Beloved leader Gibbs returns as a younger man for the franchise's prequel series, "NCIS: Origins," announced in March "The Hating Game" star Austin Stowell will play young Gibbs. "We weren't just casting Gibbs; we were casting a young Mark Harmon," says Stapf. "And Austin embodies it all."
Harmon, 72, will narrate and serve as executive producer. Sean Harmon, Mark's real-life son, who often played the younger version of Gibbs in flashbacks on "NCIS," will also serve as executive producer.
"Origins" follows young Gibbs as he fights for his place on the team led by NCIS legend Mike Franks. Kyle Schmid has been cast as the younger version of the Texan Franks (Muse Watson in "NCIS") who played a pivotal role in Gibbs' early career.
How to watch: Coming to CBS this fall.
Untitled Tony and Ziva spinoff (CBS)
Notable characters: Fans loved the special sizzle between agents Tony DiNozzo (Weatherly) and Ziva David (Cote De Pablo, who left "NCIS" in 2013 after eight seasons). The couple, known as Tiva, announced their return in February for a European-set spinoff on Paramount+. No premiere date has been set, nor has an actor been cast to play the couple's young daughter Tali.
After Tony’s security company is attacked by terrorists, the new show features a family on the run through Europe.
How to watch: Coming to Paramount+
Flavor: Whatever the title, it's "NCIS: Tiva." In a statement, the two stars promised "an action-packed roller coaster fueled by love, danger, tears and laughter."

 Ballbreaker World Tour 1996
AC/DC are an Australian rock band formed in Sydney in 1973 by Scottish-born brothers Malcolm (rhythm guitar) and Angus Young (lead guitar). Their music has been variously described as hard rock, blues rock, and heavy metal, but the band calls it simply "rock and roll".
AC/DC underwent several line-up changes before releasing their debut album, High Voltage (1975). Membership subsequently stabilised around the Young brothers with Bon Scott (lead vocals), Mark Evans (bass) and Phil Rudd (drums). Evans was fired from the band in 1977 and replaced by Cliff Williams, who has since appeared on every album since Powerage (1978). Seven months after the release of the band's breakthrough album Highway to Hell (1979), Scott died of alcohol poisoning and the other members considered disbanding. However, at the request of Scott's parents, they continued together and recruited English singer Brian Johnson as their new frontman. Their first album with Johnson, Back in Black (1980), was dedicated to Scott's memory. It was a widespread success, launching the band to new heights and becoming the second-best-selling album of all time.
The band's eighth studio album, For Those About to Rock (1981), was their first album to reach number one in the United States. Prior to the release of their next album, Flick of the Switch (1983), Rudd left the band and was replaced by Simon Wright, who was himself replaced by Chris Slade six years later. The band experienced a commercial resurgence in the early 1990s with the release of their 12th studio album The Razors Edge (1990); it was their only album to feature Slade, who was replaced by the returning Rudd in 1994. Rudd has since recorded five more albums with the band, starting with Ballbreaker (1995). Their 15th studio album Black Ice was the second-highest-selling album of 2008 and their biggest chart hit since For Those About to Rock, eventually reaching No. 1 worldwide.
The band's line-up remained the same for 20 years until 2014, when Malcolm Young retired due to early-onset dementia (from which he died three years later) and Rudd became involved in legal troubles. Malcolm was replaced by his nephew Stevie Young, who debuted on the album Rock or Bust (2014). On the accompanying tour, previous drummer Chris Slade filled in for Rudd. In 2016, Johnson was advised to stop touring due to worsening hearing loss, and Guns N' Roses singer Axl Rose stepped in as the band's frontman for the remainder of that year's dates. Long-time bassist and backing vocalist Williams retired at the end of the Rock or Bust tour in 2016, and the group entered a four-year hiatus. A reunion of the Rock or Bust line-up was announced in September 2020, and the band's 17th studio album Power Up was released two months later.
AC/DC have sold more than 200 million records worldwide, including 75 million albums in the United States, making them the ninth-highest-selling artist in the United States and the 16th-best-selling artist worldwide. Back in Black has sold an estimated 50 million units worldwide, making it the second-best-selling album of all time and the highest-selling album by a band. The album has sold 25 million units in the US, where it is the fourth best-selling album of all time. AC/DC were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. They ranked fourth on VH1's list of the "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock" and were named the seventh "Greatest Heavy Metal Band of All Time" by MTV. In 2004, they ranked No. 72 on the Rolling Stone list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time". American record producer Rick Rubin, who wrote an essay on the band for Rolling Stone, called them the "greatest rock and roll band of all time". In 2010, VH1 ranked them No. 23 on its list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time".

4/ Percy Le Vaux - the victim's 'most intimate friend'
New Post has been published on https://qnews.com.au/4-percy-le-vaux-the-victims-most-intimate-friend/
4/ Percy Le Vaux - the victim's 'most intimate friend'
Percy Le Vaux moved to Cairns intent on achieving wealth and power. It never quite worked out.
At the time of Percy’s birth, his father worked as headmaster of a small school on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. But when Percy was five, George Victor Le Vaux uprooted his young family and moved them to Australia. He never explained why.
For good reason.
It’s unlikely he would have found work teaching in Australia if authorities knew the Canadians dismissed him from his previous position for an unmentioned but obviously serious transgression.
Le Vaux taught in Sydney for a short while before successfully applying for the job of headmaster at Roma in country Queensland. In later years, he claimed he moved to Queensland at the invitation of Premier Sir Thomas McIlwraith. Notably, he only mentioned that once McIlwraith was dead and unable to disagree. But if the Premier knew Le Vaux and thought so highly of his teaching, why bring him to Queensland only to dump him in the outback?
In fact, newspaper articles indicate a vacancy arose for a principal at Roma. Le Vaux applied, and the local school board selected him for the job as per standard practice.
The new Roma headmaster was a fantasist who dreamed as a child of greatness. He believed “a grand name would advance him in the world.” So young George Vaugh became Mr George Victor Le Vaux. The ambitious lad abandoned England in his late teens. In a family tree he drew up in his later years, Le Vaux claimed that, at 18, he “served in the 5th Cazadons Garabaldine 1860. Present at LaScala, Palermo, Volturno Oct. 3rd 1860.” A condensed version of the same biography claiming service with Garibaldi in the Italian Wars of Unification is inscribed on his tombstone in a Toowoomba cemetery.
A curiously inaccurate curriculum vitae for a man of learning.
During the Wars of Unification, Garibaldi created 5 regiments of mainly Sicilian volunteers, known as the Cacciatori delle Alpi (Hunters of the Alps). Le Vaux’s ‘cazodons’ is probably a garbled version of cazadors, the Spanish word for hunters.
Garibaldi fought no battles at La Scala. It was an opera house, not a battlefield. And the battle of Volturno was well and truly over on October 3rd 1860, having taken place on the 1st. The fat lady had already sung.
Who knows if 18-year-old George Victor Le Vaux ever visited Italy? His biography seems the result of someone unfamiliar with the country, language, and war attempting to cobble together a story from bits and pieces they’d picked up here and there.
Military imposters are not uncommon. Military service impresses. It can improve a person’s social standing and enhance employment prospects. It certainly worked for Thomas Seaton, Inspector of Nuisances for the Municipality of Cairns.
After his future prospects plummeted to the bottom of Niagara Falls, George Victor Le Vaux resurrected his social standing in outback Queensland.
Then, after a decade in Roma, Le Vaux senior achieved a promotion. He was appointed the foundation principal of Indooroopilly State School in Brisbane, with young Percy as the new school’s first registered pupil. Le Vaux instituted a Cadet Corps in both schools, similar to the Church Lad’s Brigade in Cairns. Teenage boys underwent basic military training, practising shooting at a rifle range and drilling with short muzzle-loading firearms fitted with bayonet blades.
Percy was his father’s star recruit.
After leaving school, Percy Le Vaux initially worked as a clerk in Brisbane but then articled for his solicitor brother George in Cairns for two years. After a further three years with a Brisbane law firm,  he was admitted as a solicitor in 1902. He returned to Cairns to open his first legal practice. His brother had by then moved south.
Percy Le Vaux
A few months later, Percy took vows of Holy Matrimony.
“Buggies and cabs crowded round the gate of St John’s Church. The first flutter of excitement caused by the arrival of a principal in the important event shortly to happen — the marriage of Miss Blanche Severin, third daughter of our esteemed townsman, Mr Louis Severin, to Mr Percy Le Vaux, solicitor, and a recent arrival in our town.”
A marriage of convenience for both.
Percy was almost 30. Louis Severin was a successful businessman and politician — and much-liked. His daughters were celebrated local beauties and leading lights of the Cairns social scene. Marrying Blanche was a no-brainer for a man who craved business and political success in the town.
And Blanche had few other options. Beautiful, yes. Also intelligent, an elegant dresser, and an in-demand guest at the better social occasions. But Blanche had little education and no work experience. The Severin girls were raised to make desirable wives for men of means — and little else. At 26, if Blanche did not take this opportunity, another might not come along.
Besides, she wanted out of her father’s house. Both Louis Severin’s wives died young, probably worn out by frequent childbirth. Blanche’s older sister took on the maternal role in the family and the pair did not get on. Blanche might barely know Percy Le Vaux, but she wanted a home of her own. It wasn’t as though he was an axe murderer or something! 🤔
After the church ceremony, guests adjourned to the Severin residence for the wedding breakfast. Brabazon Stafford, the local Police Magistrate, gave a speech congratulating the couple and wishing them a life of conjugal bliss. After the wedding feast, guests accompanied the newlyweds down the street to the railway station, where they caught the train to nearby Kuranda for their honeymoon.
But the honeymoon did not last. At least, not the honeymoon between Percy Le Vaux and Police Magistrate Brabazon Stafford. Stafford was a former Sub-Inspector of the Native Police, the near-autonomous Queensland militia charged with policing Aboriginals.
Officially, the force ‘dispersed’ First Nations people suspected of murder, killing stock, thieving or posing any perceived threat to those who now occupied their traditional lands. But ‘dispersed’ was a euphemism. Even newspapers of the day printed the word inside quotation marks. As a correspondent to the Cooktown Courier noted, the orthodox method of dispersal occurred via ‘swift, leaden messengers’ — bullets. Likewise, the Morning Post advised, “the word ‘dispersed’ as applied in some quarters to the blacks, does not convey altogether the same meaning as gathered from Webster’s dictionary.”
The murderous militia conducted widespread, indiscriminate, extrajudicial killings of First Nations people. Crimes, which even Queensland parliamentarians admitted would see other perpetrators hanged. Tens of thousands of First Nations people died during Queensland’s frontier wars.
Stafford and other officers of the Native Police found employment as Police Magistrates upon their retirement. With no legal training and a work history littered with extra-judicial killings, they became heads of the local judiciary in towns across Queensland.
Percy Le Vaux had arrived in Cairns with great expectations. Like his father, he thought very highly of himself and expected the northern town to reward his very presence. His older brother had moved to the town, become a respected lawyer with a thriving practice and been elected to the Cairns Municipal Council.
However, Percy did not feel the love. The citizens of Cairns failed to recognise how lucky they were that he deigned to live among them. The young lawyer came to the northern frontier expecting wealth and position to shower down upon him. Instead, he struggled to afford drinking money. And Percy liked a drink!
He blamed a clique of locals for keeping all the prized positions to themselves. He was not entirely wrong. His own father-in-law spent years on council and served three terms as mayor.  A J Draper scored 5 terms as mayor of Cairns, was secretary of the neighbouring Barron Divisional Board, on the Stock Exchange, the hospital board and much more. Lawyer A J P MacDonnell had all the best clients tied up.
Frustrated by his lack of early advancement in the northern town, Percy Le Vaux began to identify the powers-that-be who he believed held him back. Among them, Brabazon Stafford, who frequently found against Percy’s clients. Of course, most of his clients were no-hopers, crims and drunks, but what did that matter?
Peter Lumberg was one of them—for a time, a notorious drunk and no stranger to the lock-up. On one occasion, Percy represented Peter in an action against Constable Baulch, whom Peter accused of stealing his gold watch and chain while Peter was in the cells. They lost the case. However, soon after Baulch was convicted of corrupt activity and dismissed from the force.
That was the problem with Cairns. Nothing was black and white. Well, other than the colour of your skin.
By September 1902, Percy Le Vaux realised he was unlikely to achieve his ambitions in Cairns by playing nice.
He began his campaign against the ruling clique in the police court, sparring with Brabazon Stafford, a pompous and thin-skinned man, unable to let any perceived slight pass him by.
“Is it not a fact that you told people in the town that you would bring the case before Mr Stafford because he would not find against Mr MacDonnell?” Le Vaux asked a witness.
“What’s that?” asked Stafford from the bench, “I want an apology for that at once.”
“I apologise,” muttered Le Vaux.
“I will hear this case no further until I have a proper apology,” said Stafford. “This is altogether too much.”
After an adjournment for lunch, Stafford addressed the Court.
“Mr Le Vaux, I have given your remarks serious consideration and have come to the conclusion that I am not prepared to accept the cursory and half-hearted apology you tendered for the insult you have levelled at this Court. I shall require a more abject apology and a statement from you withdrawing unreservedly the insinuations contained in your remarks before I am prepared to hear from you any further.”
“I made no insinuations,” said Le Vaux, “the witness herself made the statement to me, and I simply asked her the question here.”
On and on, they went — back and forth — in this case and in many others.
Eventually, Le Vaux’s constant niggling reduced Stafford to petty bitching.
“You can always rely upon getting fair play from this Court, Mr Le Vaux; but the Court cannot give you brains.”
A letter writer to the Brisbane Truth shared Le Vaux’s disdain for the magistrate.
“Brabazon Stafford sits on our judicial bench administering justice in a way that would make your blood turn cold. He is very friendly with a local legal practitioner. During the course of a case, this legal light can do no wrong, and he wins most of his cases.
“Lately, however, the beak has had two or three sets back. Le Vaux, a rising young solicitor, only admitted a few months ago, has been taking him by the wool, and the higher court has twice upset the beak’s derision recently.
“It is high time the Queensland Government sacked some of these old fossils who now sit as judges of law. Magistrate Stafford has been here too long. He wants shifting.”
The Brisbane Truth itself then mounted a campaign against Stafford, eventually exposing the indiscretion that dislodged Brabazon Stafford from his prized sinecure in Cairns.
“He is living apart from his family as a bachelor, occupying rooms in the courthouse — one as a sitting room and another as a bedroom. It is extraordinary that a courthouse should be used for such a purpose. The public, having any business with the court, is greatly inconvenienced by Stafford occupying these rooms, and witnesses have to wait in the yard under the boiling sun or tropical rains without any protection whatsoever.
“There is no doubt that there are some queer people in Cairns, and some of them have most dreadful pedigrees.”
Stafford found himself compelled to apply for a transfer. No one cared much that the Police Magistrate made improper use of the government building. What public official didn’t have their snout in the government trough?
But Stafford had lost control of his home to the extent that when his marriage broke down, he moved out of the house, not his wife. Who could trust the magisterial decisions of a man who didn’t even wear the pants in his own home?
The local correspondent for the Brisbane Truth threw his voice behind Le Vaux.
“The clique will endeavour, we suppose, to get rid of young Le Vaux, a lawyer who gives them a terrible lot of annoyance, but we are afraid Le Vaux is too clever for them.
“He is a young man with plenty of ambition, knowledge, and perseverance, which makes it hard for the audacious clique to down him.”
The history of Cairns is white and male. White men made up only a fraction of the town’s population. However, they occupied the government jobs and civic positions. They owned the newspapers. The stories of other races and white women only mattered when they touched on those of white men.
That suited Percy. He was white, and he hated anyone who was not. He raged against any court which found in favour of a coloured man to the detriment of a white. According to Percy, the White Australia policy meant non-whites were always the guilty party — regardless of such petty concerns as sworn evidence.
Again, the Cairns correspondent of the Brisbane Truth found himself in complete agreement with lawyer Le Vaux.
“Cairns is a prosperous, thriving little town, of about 3,500 inhabitants, of whom only about 700 are whites. The remainder are made up of representatives of NEARLY EVERY NATIONALITY under the sun.
“Kanakas, of course, abound, but they form only a portion of the copper-coloured colonists of Cairns. Hindoos, Syrians, Javanese, Eurasians, Afghans, Greeks, Dagoes, Cainese, Phillipinoe, Manilla men, Turks, Chinese, and Japanese swarm in such numbers that their dirty faces and vile-smelling bodies almost darken the landscape and blot out the brightness of the magnificent tropical sun which shines over them.
“The Chinese and the Japanese fairly run the town. The Chows have most of the business places in their hands, and control the bulk of the trade, both internal and external. The Japs are laundrymen and cooks. But there are many Japs who toil not, neither do they spin. To them is reserved the degrading occupation of trafficking and trading in women, by means of which they pander to the lust and vice of the alien and low white population.”
When one of Percy’s clients (white, naturally) lost a case against coloured man, the Brisbane Truth ranted against the decision.
“Shame on such and shame on a State which keeps in its employ magistrates who so far forget the dignity of office as to turn dog on the white population at every opportunity.”
In 1904, Percy Le Vaux tried again to profit from his move north. He stood in the state election as the Labor candidate for Cook, the electorate north of Cairns.
Peter Lumberg no longer drank heavily. He gave his lawyer and drinking buddy’s campaign both moral and financial support.
A popular figure among the pioneer miners of Cook, Peter helped round up considerable votes for Percy. The ever-faithful Brisbane Truth also backed him for the seat.
Not that anyone thought he needed help. The Labor candidate was a shoo-in. Cook electors would vote for no other candidate.
But… they did vote for a non-Labor candidate.
Trying to foist a stranger from Cairns onto the electorate proved a fatal error for Labor. Percy lost the election by two votes. With his subsequent actions, it’s frightening to think that only two votes came between Le Vaux and a seat in the Queensland Parliament.
But something else happened in 1904, something that explained why the Brisbane Truth unfailingly supported Percy Le Vaux and automatically echoed his thoughts.
The Cairns correspondent of the Brisbane Truth, the writer who praised Percy Le Vaux for his “ambition, knowledge and perseverance” and championed the lawyer at every turn, was…
drum roll, please…
Percy Le Vaux!
As 1905 rolled around, Percy le Vaux need to try something new. He hit the local pubs most nights with his drinking mates, including his ‘most intimate friend’, Peter Lumberg.
They made an odd couple, the unkempt old prospector and the urbane young lawyer.
But things would get odder still…

Top 12 Highest Paying Jobs in Australia
With wages failing to keep up with inflation and cost of living pressures intensifying, many Australians are on the hunt for higher paid work. While record numbers are turning to side hustles, others are jumping ship to new organisations or even industries for more lucrative remuneration.
Tumblr media
Unlike in the United States, the ‘Great Resignation’ did not eventuate in Australia, however one in three workers aged between 25 and 55 are currently considering quitting their jobs. This is not necessarily due to the desire for higher pay—it could also include burnout, lack of career progression or dissatisfaction with management. However, pay and wellbeing are consistently ranked as the two most important things to employees. With that in mind, here are some of the most lucrative professions in Australia. The below data is provided by Hays Recruitment, and is based on their annual pay guide, which was released on June 1.
Forbes Advisor has created a separate list for medical professionals, as these are highly specialised careers and offer a range of roles that pay well above average salaries. Please note that salaries may vary according to a number of factors, such as the state you live in or if you live in an urban or rural area, your specific qualifications and the length of time you’ve been employed with a particular company or in a specific role.
The Highest Paying Jobs in Australia in 2023
Legal: Equity Partner (up to $850,000)It takes considerable time and dedication to become an equity partner in a law firm but the pay, once you get there, is considerable. Equity partners in top private practices in Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney report average salaries of more than $500,000, with Sydney topping the list at $850,000 plus.
Meanwhile, a general counsel typically earns between $250,000 and $400,000.
Executive: CEO and MD ($700,000) If you’re a CEO or managing director at a company with a turnover between $50 million and $500 million, the typical income is $600,000 but can reach up to $700,000.

They earn an average of $310,848 per year. Psychiatrist – $252,691 Psychiatrists earn an average of $252,691 per year. The current shortage of psychiatrists has been flagged by the federal government as a concern by 2030 unless an intervention is made – and in the meantime it will only drive salaries higher.
What Are The Highest Paying Jobs In Australia That Don’t Require A Degree?
Of course, the top professions we have just listed all require extensive university training and qualifications.
The three highest paying jobs that do not require a university degree are ICT managers; chemical, gas, petroleum and power generation
plant operators; and ICT sales professionals, according to the Monarch Institute.
Information and communications technology: $170,955Chemical, gas, petroleum and power generation plant operators: $168,376
ICT sales professionals: $157,123. This includes specialist roles such as account manager and sales representative.
Average Australian Salaries in 2023 The median full-time worker in Australia earned $78,800 in 2022, while the median part-timer took home $32,400 last year, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). When both types of employees are combined, the median salary is $65,000. That is to say, half of all employees in Australia earned more than this, and half earned less.
A taxable income that was $131,501 or higher was within the top 10% of earners in Australia last year. About 5% of taxpayers had incomes above $180,000. Someone who earned more than $253,066 was in the top 1%.
When discussing the ‘typical’ wage, averages are less representative than medians, because there are a handful of very high earners who skew the results by earning millions or even billions of dollars.
A middle-income household typically comprises a couple with children living off one full time job of around $85,000 and a part-time job of around $30,000 per year. This middle 20% has a combined weekly income of $1,884 ($97,986 annually), according to a report by the Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS).
Are you looking for a higher paying job? If so, you aren’t alone. Many people are facing day-to-day financial stress as living expenses remain at record highs. It is therefore unsurprising that one in three employees is considering quitting their jobs, according to a PwC report. Pay and wellbeing were ranked as the top two most important factors in a job, according to the report.

Top Things to Consider When Hiring a Blockchain Development Company
When it comes to choosing a blockchain development company for your project, there are a few things to consider. These include the experience and skills of the team, the portfolios of the developers, and the list of actual needs that you have.
Choosing a blockchain development company in sydney
List of actual needs
A blockchain is a decentralized ledger that stores and records information. It is a technology that has received a lot of attention in recent years. However, sourcing and managing the many developers needed to build it can be an overwhelming task. Fortunately, there are ways to streamline the process and get your projects out the door on time and on budget.
The first step is to identify your needs, and the most appropriate type of developer. This might be a full-time employee or a freelancer. Alternatively, you may want to outsource the project to a company that specializes in the technology. By outsourcing, you gain the benefits of a larger team without the costs and headaches of in-house management.
You will need to choose the right blockchain development company in sydney for your company's specific needs. To do so, you will need to decide on the best way to allocate your budget. Some examples include hiring a firm with experience in ethereum, and using a third party to handle the technical end of the equation.
Organizational skills required
When hiring a blockchain development company, you should look for skills that are unique. Your choice should be based on the skills that will make the most impact to your organization.
It is important to note that the best candidates have organizational skills. These are not just soft skills, they show that the applicant has the ability to prioritize tasks, communicate effectively, and manage time efficiently.
The ability to solve problems is an essential skill for any blockchain developer. They should also have a comprehensive knowledge of cryptography and consensus. A solid understanding of open standards will also help.
Communication is another important skill for any app developer. Developers need to be able to explain and describe what they are working on to non-technical employees. This is especially true for developers working in a team environment.
Portfolios
When looking for a firm to develop a custom blockchain, it's important to choose a company that has a portfolio of completed projects and an excellent reputation. However, choosing the right developer for your project is not an easy task.
The first step is to investigate the portfolios of the potential providers. These portfolios usually contain details about the developers and their awards and appraisals.
After comparing the portfolios of several firms, it's important to identify the most suitable company. It's crucial to find a company with a solid track record and a team of professionals with a proven track record.
A good way to learn more about the potential companies is to read client testimonials and case studies. This gives you a more accurate picture of the services that the developer will be offering. Some firms also offer a free consultation, so if you're unsure about the service you want, you can ask for a quote.
Legal expertise
The legal industry is just beginning to understand how important blockchain is to today's businesses. In fact, it has already begun to woo clients with its burgeoning fintech offerings. As such, the law firm that knows its stuff will likely be a leader in this space. It has already begun recruiting notables like Joshua Ashley Klayman, the fintech guru of Linklaters U.S. and a whole slew of other industry luminaries.
While many forward-looking law firms have already started their search for the perfect hire, not all firms are equally fortunate. For instance, Latham Investment Management has tapped a plethora of fintech gurus. Likewise, DLA Piper has also gone fintech. Thus, it makes sense to hire a well-rounded team to ensure your firm's fintech frolics are smooth sailing. Moreover, it's not just about hiring the right people. There is also the matter of talent management, or in legal parlance, a legal department's retention and promotion policy.
Experienced team of developers
When you are looking to hire a team of Blockchain developers in sydney for your project, the process can be a bit tricky. You need to find a team with a wide range of experience. A qualified team of experts can take on planning, analysis, delivery, and project management.
Finding an experienced team is crucial to the success of your project. While there are plenty of vendors out there that can offer you affordable services, it can be difficult to determine which is the best choice.
Blockchain technology is relatively new, and there are many variables to consider when choosing an expert. For example, you need to assess their skills in cryptography and consensus. Also, it is important to look for people who have experience in high performance computing.

Executive Recruitment Firms: A Good Choice For Your Next Hire?
Tumblr media
Hiring a new member of your team is one of the most important decisions you can make. It isn't just about finding someone who will fit in with the company culture and help achieve goals, it's also about finding someone who will be able to do their job well and grow within the organization.  As such, it's essential that you find the right person for the job. This is why working with Executive Recruitment Sydney firm s is such a great idea. They will take care of everything from the initial screening process to making sure that your candidate is a good fit for the position and your company culture. Here are some of the advantages that working with an executive recruitment firm can provide you:
Experience
The first advantage of using an Executive Recruitment Sydney firm is that they have experience in finding the best candidates for your company. As a result, they can be trusted to make the most out of their time and resources when it comes to sourcing candidates. This means that they will not waste time sending you unqualified individuals or spending money on people who are outside your budget. If you want to find a good fit for your position, look no further than an executive recruitment firm. They know what it takes to find someone who will be able to fulfill all of their duties and responsibilities without fail, which means that there is no need for guesswork when it comes down to making any hiring decisions at all!
Tumblr media
Quickly Fill Difficult Roles
You can also use an executive search firm to fill a role quickly. It is important to look at how long it takes to fill a particular role and what the benefits of hiring quickly are, including: Increased productivity Less time spent on the interview process Lower recruitment costs, as you are only paying for the services you need
Cost savings
Cost savings are the main reason to use an Top Executive Recruitment Melbourne firm. By bringing in a professional recruiter, you can save time and money because they will do all of the work for you. You can focus on your core business instead of spending hours researching and interviewing candidates who might not be qualified for the position. The experts at a top-tier executive search firm have access to a large pool of candidates who are pre-screened for their qualifications and experience, which means that they know exactly what kind of person will fit into your company culture.  This is something that even the most seasoned hiring managers would have difficulty achieving alone—and even if they did find someone who meets all those requirements, it would probably take them several months or years to do so!
Confidentiality
Executive search firms are bound by confidentiality agreements that ensure the candidate will not be told you are using Executive Recruitment Sydney firm. In fact, a candidate has no legal means of knowing if you have used an executive search firm to find them.  This ensures that your company does not suffer from any negative media attention, as often happens when a high-profile hiring mistake is made in the public eye. The confidentiality of candidates is also important because it gives them peace of mind during the process: they can focus on what they need to do and feel confident they will be treated well.
Only Interview the Best of the Best
To hire the best candidates, you need to be able to identify them. Recruiters do this by finding and vetting only top-notch professionals in your industry. Recruiters know what they're looking for and how to find it, so they can ensure that only the best of the best apply for your open positions. The recruiter won't waste time with people who aren't qualified or are not a good fit with your company culture. Because recruiters have a network of professionals like themselves in various industries, they can usually find someone who is well suited for an open position within their network if none of their existing contacts are available for hire at that time. This gives you access to a larger pool of talent than you could possibly manage on your own
Conclusion
The advantages of using an executive recruitment firm to find your next hire are clear. You can expect to save time and money, while filling roles that might be difficult for you to fill on your own. You also get access to a network of top talent that could help you land the perfect candidate for your company’s needs! Read the full article

Welcome to my job blog... or jlog?
Who the fuck are you?
Sydney, but you can call me Syd. Either way!
Why did you make this... "jlog"?
Career coaching has been something I've been doing for years. Call it some sort of weird ass side-hobby, like underwater basket-weaving.
Why should I listen to you?
You probably shouldn't lol. But if you must know, I have 18+ years experience working in a variety of industries and areas, including retail, staffing/recruiting, sales, higher ed., and the tech industry (focused on game development and customer experience), as well as a master's degree and a ton of student loan debt lmao.
I'm also an experienced hiring / people manager, if you care about that sort of thing, and I have a lot of experience reviewing resumes, and interviewing candidates for jobs.
Can I send you an ask about jobs and stuff?
Sure! Just keep in mind a few things:
I'm not an employment lawyer or HR generalist. I'm just very opinionated. If you send me an ask about legal or HR stuff, take my advice with a grain of salt and go see a lawyer or HR or something.
All I can really do is give advice based off of the information you give me. I don't always know the full context, so it is up to you to decide if any advice I give is worth taking or not lol.
Please don't send me asks with personal information, like dropping names of places you work, your coworkers' names, etc. I won't answer them - mainly to save your own ass. Would you want your boss or coworker to see that you name-dropped them on the internet? Probably not, so don't do it.
I don't know everything, and I might suggest some resources for you to look into. It's up to you to do the research after that, all I can really do is try to point you in a better direction.
What can I send you asks about?
Resumes / cover letters (please don't include personal info) - how to format, what employers look for, how to make your resume make it past those shitty Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), etc.
Interviews & job offers - what sort of questions to ask, how to approach interview prep, what not to do, general questions about salary negotiation and raises
Coworker/manager conflict management - how to deal with shitty coworkers or managers, how not to be a shitty manager or coworker
College & graduate school - how to apply for college, college experiences, does college even matter???, dealing with student loans, etc.
Performance and professional growth - how to approach performance reviews, what to do if you are put on a performance improvement plan, how to ask your manager for more opportunities or promotions
General questions about things related to FMLA, ADA, dealing with harassment at work, etc.
Memes and funny work stories - love em. Just make sure they have no personal info in them.
Anything else I probably forgot lmao
Anywho, feel free to shoot me an ask if my inbox is open!

The Ungodly Gains Of The World’s Greediest Church
[ The cash that built the Moon organization’s “foundation.” ] Sydney Morning Herald   May 7, 1993 by Ben Hills
The Unification Church of Japan stated: “We do not participate in profit-making activities.”
“I don’t feel embarrassment … deep remorse is a better word,” confesses Kiyoharu Takahashi, blinking furiously behind his black-rimmed eyeglasses.
For 400 years, a small plot of land on the urban fringe of Tokyo had been in the family, once retainers of the local daimyo (lord of the manor).
Five years ago, Mr Takahashi, then a university student, aged 26, persuaded his family to take out mortgages over the property. Although there is less than a hectare of land, it contains the family home, a turf farm, a rented house and two blocks of flats.
Even so, it still amazes Kiyoharu how much the banks were prepared to lend on it. By the time the credit dried up, he had received $67.5 million, repayments had fallen behind and the banks were threatening to foreclose. Four centuries of family history were about to go down the drain.
What caused this calamity ?
Every cent of the money – plus another $500,000 or so in savings that the Takahashis had put aside over the years – was handed over to an organisation Japanese are starting to call the greediest church in the world, the Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity, known to the less devout as the Moonie church.
Its founder and Pope is the Reverend Sun Myung Moon, a 73-year-old, thrice-married father of [more than] 13 who now lives in the United States, where he has done time in prison for [document fraud and] tax evasion.
Although he is better known for his mass marriage spectaculars – last year he hired the Olympic stadium in Seoul to celebrate the wedding of 30,000 followers, most of whom had never met each other before – Moon has spent the last 40 years building up a formidable religious multinational.
And Japan is the place where Moon Industries Inc, a conglomerate that trades under more than 100 corporate identities, has made its most spectacular, and some would say ungodly, gains.
Young Mr Takahashi is only one of 8,350 people who have come forward, claiming they have been ripped off by the Moonies, since a national legal network was set up to help them get their money back six years ago. The total amount they claim to have been cheated out of is a staggering $568 million. Cases are listed in more than a dozen courts. Many of them, like Mr Takahashi, say they have been blackmailed into borrowing beyond their means, then handing the money over. In his case, barely credibly, he was told that his father’s Parkinson’s Disease was due to an ancient curse which could only be lifted from the family by prayer … and enormous amounts of money.
Another reformed Moonie – “Tomiko” is a 34-year-old English teacher from Tokyo – was told her lack of luck in love was because of the “dirty” money which she had saved. She took her life savings, $5,000, to a flat where the Moonies sprinkled salt in the four corners of the room, said prayers, and made it all disappear.
“Unfortunately, Japanese seem more susceptible to this sort of thing than people in other countries,” says Hiroshi Yamaguchi, a member of the lawyers’ network, who is handling cases for 25 former Moonies, including Takahashi, Tomiko, and a woman in Australia who was swindled out of $12,000.
People are being enticed into a range of activities which have no overt connection with the Moonies.
There are about 100 Moonie-owned “video centres” around Tokyo where people are invited in and then recruited.
Another favourite ploy is to organise conferences by front organisations, such as the World Peace Professors’ Academy, the Society of Field Flowers, the Japan-Korea Tunnel Task Force and even the Women’s Federation for World Peace, which last year held a meeting at Sydney’s Ritz Carlton Hotel.
No-one knows how many followers the Reverend Moon has attracted since he went international in the mid-1960s. He claims five million followers in 160 countries (including Australia) but a more realistic assessment by former members of the cult is around one-tenth that number [possibly at the zenith – now many fewer].
Even so, Japan – where there are thought to be around 20,000 hard-core Moonies – is beyond doubt one of the most profitable parts of his empire. Or was, until the recent deluge of bad publicity.

▲ Hiroko Yamasaki
Tokyo’s tabloids have been agog for a month over the disappearance of Hiroko Yamazaki, a 33-year-old former Olympic gymnast, who has provided the church with acres of publicity since her marriage at the mass-wedding in Korea last year to a groom selected for her by the Rev Moon.

She reappeared, renouncing the church and claiming it had all been a terrible mistake.

愛が偽りに終わるとき – 山崎 浩子 (著)
After being indoctrinated the converts are put out on the streets of Tokyo to bring in other recruits, and to make money selling products door-to-door.
Mr Takahashi displays some of the products he was obliged to sell. There is a 300-gram jar of extract from Korean ginseng (a parsnip-like root which tastes a bit like tobacco and is reputed to be medicinal) – this sold for $1,000, when the over-the-counter price in Korea is about $150. The Reverend Moon’s Il Hwa factory near Seoul is South Korea’s largest ginseng processor.

A set of three name-seals, worth about $125, is sold for up to $15,000. All Moonies dream of selling the jewelled pagoda – a model studded with what look like bits of glass that goes for $67,500.
After her conversion, Tomiko became a real cash cow. Even though she had no property to put up as collateral, she borrowed more than $50,000 from eight different banks and handed it over. She sold her family a garage full of Moonie products – her mother paid $20,000 for a kimono, her father $8,000 for a sauna, among other things. “I became a saleswoman … they said it was the way to achieve heaven on earth.”
Gullible? Perhaps. But 8,349 more like her? Sadao Asami, professor of theology at Tohoku University, believes that there is something about the Japanese that makes them more susceptible to Moon’s brand of religion.
Professor Asami has earned a nickname, “the Devil’s priest”, from the Moonies because of the help he has given hundreds of families, “rescuing” their children from the Moonies. He has worked with 500 to 600 former followers. He says that Japanese remain dependent on their parents much longer than people in the West, and that they are thus more immature. As well, the Japanese culture entertains a variety of religious and superstitious beliefs.
They also, says Mr Yamaguchi, have a lot of money.
Until recently, the Tokyo Moonies have been trying to quietly settle most of the claims out of court. However, in January, Michio Fujii, the head of the church in Japan, wrote to Mr Yamaguchi apologising for the “mismanagement of subordinates of the Unification Church” – but saying that repayment of money would be “temporarily stopped”.
This means that Mr Takahashi is in trouble. The church had repaid most of the money and had taken over repayments on the loans. But $3 million is outstanding. The Moonies’ headquarters is in the fashionable suburb of Shibuya, a three-storey building that occupies most of a city block.
Unfortunately, neither Mr Fujii, nor anyone else, was willing to put the church’s point of view on these serious allegations. They later sent an anonymous fax, denying everything and claiming bare-facedly: “We do not participate in profit-making activities.”
The Unification Church’s own publications boast of a global business empire valued in the hundreds of millions of dollars.
The core is the Sae-il engineering company, which began making air-rifles, and now manufactures machine-tools in Korea, Germany and Africa. Then there is the Il-Hwa company which produces more than 40 different pharmaceutical products, ginseng and soft-drinks; in Alabama, there is International Oceanic Enterprises which catches and packs seafood; in Alaska, the Master Marine company makes fibreglass fishing trawlers; the Moonies own the Paragon House publishing firm, the Washington Times newspaper and a four-storey complex in Barrytown, New York, where they run a theological seminary.
Although his worries are not over, Mr Takahashi – along with several thousand other former converts – is thankful to be out of it. And not to have to go through with the “marriage” he had in 1988 … along with 6,499 other couples. In a hall at a Seoul soft-drink factory, he saw his bride for the first time. “I had built up expectations of how beautiful she was going to be,” he says “When I saw her I got vertigo.”
Two of his fellow Moonies committed suicide. One, a middle-aged woman who was being pressured into handing over some land, jumped off a building. Another, a man who was married at a mass wedding, jumped in front of a car.
“At the time I believed in it,” says Mr Takahashi, “Now I know it was only blackmail and lies aimed at getting their money.”
