My my, what beautiful blossoms we have this year. But look -- this one's late. But I'll bet that when it blooms, it will be the most beautiful of all.
Actor Soon-Tek Oh (born June 29, 1932 in Mokpo, Japanese-occupied Korea) passed away on April 4 this year from Alzheimer’s disease at the age of eighty-five. The Korean-American actor was one of the most prolific Asian-American actors over the course of his career, despite television and movie studios limiting Asian actors into stereotypical roles. After graduating college in South Korea, emigrating to the United States, and studying at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City and at UCLA (where he received a master’s in acting and playwriting), Oh co-founded the East West Players in 1965. The Los Angeles-based Asian-American theater group continues its original mission, as outlined by Oh and his fellow co-founders: to support artists of Asian and Pacific Islander descent going into stage, television, or cinema.
Oh was always more of a Los Angeles-area stage actor than he was a television and movie actor. But that did not stop him from leaving his own mark -- and yes, there were stereotypical roles along the way -- over the course of his career. Eight of his movies or television appearances are shown above, and are listed below (left-right descending):
The Man with the Golden Gun (1974) -- directed by Guy Hamilton; also starring Roger Moore as James Bond, Christopher Lee, Britt Ekland, Maud Adams, Hervé Villechaize, Clifton James, Richard Loo, Marc Lawrence, Bernard Lee, Lois Maxwell, and Desmond Llewelyn
M*A*S*H (1971-1983 television series) -- appeared in five episodes, including “The Korean Surgeon” (1976)
Charlie’s Angels (1976-1981 television series) -- appeared in four episodes, including “Island Angels” (1980)
Missing in Action 2: The Beginning (1985) -- directed by Lance Hool; also starring Chuck Norris, Steven Williams, and Bennett Ohta
Steele Justice (1987) -- directed by Robert Boris; also starring Martin Kove, Sela Ward, Ronny Cox, Bernie Casey, Joseph Campanella, and Jan Gan Boyd
A Home of Our Own (1993) -- directed by Tony Bill; also starring Kathy Bates and Edward Furlong
Beverly Hills Ninja (1997) -- directed by Dennis Dugan; also starring Chris Farley, Nicollette Sheridan, Robin Shou, Nathaniel Parker, Keith Cooke, Chris Rock, and François Chau
Mulan (1998) -- directed by Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook; also starring the voices of Ming-Na Wen, Eddie Murphy, BD Wong, Miguel Ferrer, June Foray, James Hong, Pat Morita, and George Takei
