Reputation:
Spain has exploded in the last four years in the European arena, both with their National team and with their top club team, Barcelona. They have jumped six spots in the world ranking in the last four years and have had several big wins against other top-ten opponents. However, in late 2022, 15 of the country’s top female players withdrew from the squad in protest over the coach’s “dictatorial” and “abusive” behavior, and alleged that the coach had gotten the job via bribery and contacts, rather than qualifications. In playing without these fifteen players, Spain has had inconsistent results. They beat an out-of-sorts USA team, but lost other games against similar opponents. Some of those fifteen players are included on the roster, and some are not.
Player Pool:
A major portion of Spain’s roster plays in the country’s own league. The strong Barcelona team is led by striker Alexia Putellas, who has won the last two FIFA Ballon d’Or Feminin awards, which is given annually to the best player in the world. They have several standouts on each line, including : Irene Paredes on Defense, Putellas and Aitana Bonmatti in the midfield, and Jenni Hermosa at Forward.

Japan had an incredible run in 2011-2015, reaching the final vs USA in the 2011 World Cup, 2012 olympics, and 2015 World Cup, but since then they have gradually lost their edge. Many of the players during that period have retired, and newer players haven’t found the same success. They are the highest ranked active Asian team and so far in 2023 have kept up with top 10 teams, but often couldn’t find a game-winning goal. Japan is known for their flawless technique and their ability to hold the ball, and recently they have demonstrated the ability to win the ball with a high press, leading to a high-possession style of play.
Player Pool:
Japan has a solid core of players, led by Captain Saki Kumagai, one of the last hold-outs from the 2011-2015 team. About half of the team plays in Japans’ domestic league, but the rest of the players play in many different leagues–Hina Sugita and Jun Endo in the USA, Yui Hasegawa in England, and youngster Hamano in Sweden. Hamano is 18, but has already signed a multi-year contract with English powerhouse Chelsea before being loaned to the Swedish league. This club diversity means that players are familiar with and can adapt to different playing styles.
2019 WWC performance:
Well, they made it through the group stage, then lost in the round of sixteen to the Netherlands. AFter not making it to the 2016 Olympics, there was already a sense of unease about this former powerhouse team’s potential, and even more confidence was lost in them after this World Cup. They have shown that they still have talented players, but it seems they are missing something that had kept them going through their dynastic reign in 2011-2015.

This is not Costa Rica’s first World Cup, it is their second after qualifying 2015 but missing 2019. In 2015 they turned heads with their resilience, holding much higher ranked teams to ties in the group stage. Despite their 2015 performance, Costa Rica has only been able to achieve results against similarly or lower ranked opponents, and will face stiff competition against Japan and Spain. Much of their success is attributed to the guidance of coach Amelia Valverde, who was the youngest coach in the 2015 World Cup at age 24, and won FIFA world women's coach of the year in 2016.
Player Pool:
The most well known player from Costa Rica is American Club soccer star Raquel “Rocky” Rodriguez, who helped the Portland Thorns win the 2022 NWSL championship last year. Rocky will share the frontline with Melissa Herrera, who plays for Bordeaux in France.

Reputation:
Zambia is a World Cup debutante, meaning that this is their first World Cup, although their first major tournament was the 2020 Olympics. They did not make it out of their group stage, with their only positive result being a 4-4 tie against China. They let in a lot of goals at the Olympics, but also surprised opponents with intense scoring drives. In the last friendlies before the world cup, they pulled out a stunning win over #2-ranked Germany.
Player Pool:
Zambia has a clear headliner in Barbra Banda, who is the first player in Olympic history to score back to back hat-tricks in Olympic soccer games, the first in a 10-3 loss and the second in the 4-4 tie with China. She plays internationally in China and led that league in goals in the 2020 season. The remaining team members are young, all under the age of 25. Without any World Cup experience and with tough opponents, it will be difficult for this team to move on.

Claire Denis’ STARS AT NOON: “I think maybe a big mistake…”

At the conclusion of her brilliant career, filmmaker, Claire Denis, staged a couple of shocking films (far beyond her usual mayhem). The first entry, Both Sides of the Blade (2022), amounts to a protagonist-humanitarian, concluding that blacks in France are ruinous. The second film (with its second humanitarian), Stars at Noon (2022), chooses philosophy; but getting to the nub is a bugger; and a treasure. In fact, we must visit the precinct of Marcel Proust (1871-1922), in order to understand Denis’ venture, her disappointment and her glee. Proust and the landslide of advantage. His hopeless bid to break free from it. Finding in tiny moments what he meant.
It needs to be repeated. Despite great filming, these actions had moved toward philosophy. (Coming to the gut.) As such, Denis had dared to visit the turf of novelist Marcel Proust. From that vantage point, she would visit the old errors, so molten. Thereby, in the film, Both Sides of the Blade, we glimpse remarkably in intensity, hatred and lostness. Thereby, we reach out to our film today, Stars at Noon. The end of planet Earth.
Trish, the protagonist, is not what we need; however, she stands as a flowing horror. Could her fear stage a comeback? Otherwise, why would an American woman move to a place like Nicaragua, and its military nonsense. Her mission of humanitarian good is clearly bogus. Her long involvement in foolish danger is more to the point. (Recall, many years ago, Denis produced a TV show called, U. S. GO HOME.)
Irony helps. “No meat today. Sorry, miss.”
Hands appear. All it takes is a little concentration. Perhaps more than a little.
She is trying to get out money from a money machine.
The plague. Truly everywhere.
More fucking. “If you get more skinny, I don’t want you no more.”
He: “You’re not a journalist.”/ Trish: “Yes, I am.” (Wanting to be valid, but way over her head. And yet the sensibility beckons. She being, at a loss. Balance needed. Balance refused.)
There is no serious traction in this work.
Visual marvels. Wasted.
An Englishman, Daniel, is looking for something in the jungle. Trish stages a long and rocky interplay with him. But Daniel is a different equation.(He has the lack of a mouse.) One could say, he’s a perfect gentleman. But a perfect gentleman is not good enough.
Trish: “You have the good manners that eventually you get killed for. I can tell you my motives. I wanted to know the exact dimensions of hell.” (A stupid priority. Also stupid: “We’re all for sale.”)
Her silhouette. The two twists of them, covering a universe. “How can one be more than a disaster?” (Many fingers in the dark.) “You’re just a mist… only mist…” (Much more than that!)
Daniel: “I never really miss anybody… I feel I’m in danger of throwing my life away…”
Trish: “See how fast the tropics sap you?” (Now excuses, as you hope.)
Covid-19. It will be something else.
Trish: “And if you could just get me to Costa Rica, I promise you I’ll get my act together.” (Things aren’t as simple here as you hope… She becomes morose… Quickly, however, she puts out to Daniel a bogus threat, to get something going. The land of fakes. The land of shallows, oversimplified, flimsy, insubstantial, empty. “I can’t see a thing…” Daniel chuckles, as often done.
Trish marches like a soldier, but she doesn’t know what courage is.
Daniel thinks that there are people here with principles. Yes and no.
Trish: “I think maybe I’ve made a big mistake.”
No milk today.
Trish kisses an old man she knows. The old man is rich and powerful. She asks for money for Costa Rica. The answer was, “no.”
On the road, Daniel, driving to Costa Rica, with Trish. At the border: “We can just wait here for a moment.” Pan to the gringos of chaos.
Now the work becomes a dream of Trish’s best shot. Can surrealism do the trick? Find the best direction. Find a way to the cosmos itself. It’s available.
Our protagonist starts with a dark night and two cars parked closely. Each driver has been butchered. Planet Earth is not one of the better planets.
Finding something better. An enigma.
Trish in a jungle where Daniel has had a small accident. They come to a deserted house, by which to patch up Daniel. Neither of them notices that they are in a structure of brilliant and loving marble, wood and glass. A deep design. A deep artistry, on the walls. A deep heart. The presence of authority. Not for them.
Not for the millennials at the forefront here, by which to cover the steep bill. This last film of Denis’, in a blaze of dance. Sensibility, both tawdry and deft. And always a prisoner. (And yet simple love has its strengths; while it burns out, and leaves ashes.)
The black who haunts the treasure. How much does he know?
Trish demands, “Cover me up,” Trish demands. Cover me up. Cover me up. Cover me up. Cover me up.”
Many soldiers appear. The leader tells the protagonists, “I will practice my English with you.”/Daniel Tells the student-soldier, “You know, you work for despicable people.” Theatre of Absurd. And yet it can touch one’s heart.

surprise, bitch.
it's been many years since i have been on tumblr. in true spirit of who i am, i cannot remember my old account login. she's a lost cause anyway. but it would've been fun to have gone back on the shit show i thought was cute. i'm glad to be back. blogging was an old passion of mine. when i first joined tumblr i was a junior in high school. (i've had a few accounts). a little over 10 years ago. *shocked* i'm now 30 years old. typing with a broken ring finger on my left hand, on the last day of 2022. to be honest i am not sure why i came back yet or what called me to come back. adele is currently playing in the back as i type away. it's therapy tbh. i wish in some way i could go back in time and hug myself. tell myself to not give up on my love for theatre. my love for music. my love for artistic expression. nowadays i'm swimming in regret and yearning to feel liberated. i've felt stuck. nostalgia is hitting me so hard as i maneuver through tumblr. the internet is not the same as it used to be. my thoughts are all over the place. i guess in order to be able to look back i want to point out some pros and cons of 2022.
let's start with cons: hospitalized and had to get surgery february, got shitty news about my health, my employment has been shit, external people came back into my life just to create more chaos, diagnosed with depression, anxiety, and ptsd. my marriage has had more downs than ups. gained too much weight. and i know im not as big as i use to big and im still cute-ish but having proven to myself i can lose weight and gain confidence fucked with me. my sister had a miscarriage that affected my family. my birthday sucked. i was pumped for my 30th birthday, and the whole week of my birthday just didn't feel right. *shrugs* Maybe 31 will be better?
moving on with pros: no lie i have sat here and thought hard. but i found some! even though marriage is rocky, there's been more mutual understanding & better communication. got amazing news about my health. found out i dont need surgery for my fractured finger. i became a certified, licensed technician. passed my exam with decent grades. i let go of friendships that i should never have gone back to. renewed my residency in the united states. now im good until 2032 (if i make it that far). also that shit was expensive. my mom (surprisingly) helped me pay it last time (2012). eventually i want to become a citizen...maybe. unless i go crazy and move to costa rica or puerto rico between now and 2032. the united states of america is anything but united. it's just getting shittier to live here.
overall rating of 2022: 1 out of 10. wouldn't recommend.
im usually not a fan of odd numbers but it seems to follow me. so maybe 2023 will be amazing. i plan on traveling more. chicago is my nearest escape from my hell. i miss being there with my husband. the vibes are always great there. it feels like home there. i have lived in small towns for the majority of my life. after i was accepted to columbia college chicago and shit didn't workout, i gave up that dream and settled for the small city of south bend. i fear i have outgrown my stay here. nothing but bad memories. also no privacy. a lot of people know who i am and who my husband is. im not a social butterfly. i am a couch cocoon.
i just want 2023 to be full of adventures. 2022 came and went and i feel empty. 2021 was such an exciting year. so many chicago trips. like literally at least once a month.
i'm determined to post at least once a day. it would be nice to look back at this on december 31, 2023 and laugh. i highly doubt anyone will read this but if for some odd reason someone does - i hope you all have an amazing 2023. i gotta get ready to go to my husbands bar to ring in the new year.

Well this really was going to be a strange and controversial world cup. First of all Qatar bribed FIFA to get it, Then it was moved to winter for the first time. Then all kinds of human right abuse started to surface. Hundreds, probably thousands of migrate workers died building it. Women seemed to be treated as 2nd class and LGBT worse. Even players protests were labelled ‘political’ and stopped. Then there was the slightly bazar Qatari rent a crowd. Then the now normal chaos of VAR and mega time added on. The president of FIFA gave a very strange speech, seemingly telling the world they shouldn’t blame Qatar for its human rights issues. Even the attendance at the games seemed off.
As the start approached the FFL teams started to come in. This would be defending FFL World Cup champion Kev Dillon’s swansong before retiring from it. Tappy was top of the FFL, could he feature.0 What about Our Grimsby Roma who in May had smashed World records. Kieron Mullin and The Hawk always do well. New manager Holly Shakeshaft and Blessing Charumbira and the return of Matt Rushton. In total 29 teams entered. The normal chaos with Team Aroma as two different baristas tried to pick the German manager their team. Blessing must have sent about 10 different drafts. So many key players missing, plus a late withdrawal of Benzema.
20th of November and I was sat in the Flying Circus drinking a big Stein of German beer putting the league together. The deadline passed and as I was travelling back from Newark on a packed rail replacement bus in the pouring rain I had the first game on the radio. Ecuador beat the host's 2 nil. The next day England played Iran. Sitting in a wet cold beer garden at The Mailbox, England took Iran apart 6v2. However this game will also unfortunately be remembered for TAREMI-GATE, With so many teams flooding in in the last few days and my knowledge of Iranian football not being up to scratch I hadn’t noticed that Blessing had him as a midfielder. Taremi scored twice and after lots of arguments it was agreed he would be classed as a forward. Bale scored for Wales against America. Japan beat Germany and Saudi Arabia beat Argentina. The first full table had Gareth Dyke, Kev Dillon, The Knightrider and Mark Kiska join top. 5 managers had less points than they started with.
The second round started with more charity money from me as Qatar lost again. England had a disappointing goalless draw with America, me and Shann watched that one in The still of all places. I watched Poland win with a group of Polish lads in the beer garden of the mailbox. Then watched a funny ‘Where is Messi? ‘Video with an Arab lad in Aroma. Saturday Argentina fired back against Mexico. Messi was definitely back. Bad news for Bob Martins and Belgium, Morocco beat them. Monday night and Ronaldo scored with a header, but on closer inspection, he didn’t touch it and the goal went to Fernandes. By the end of round two The Hawk was top, with The Knightrider second. Mark Kiszka, Kieron Mullin and Our Grimsby Roma, Tappy and Disco just behind them.
The final round of group games started and Qatar were gone. I donated a pound to both ActionAid and Stonewall for each goal they conceded. Round to £10 each. I watched England brush aside Wales in the Crow’s Nest. Germany beat Costa Rica, but VAR in the other game overturned the ref. The ball seemed to go out, but thanks to VAR Japan scored and Germany for the second world cup running were out at the group stage. 99% of the country were delighted, I wasn’t. This round also saw the end of Belgium, Denmark and Chewy Saurez’s Uruguay. Ghana’s government strangely started talking about Harry Mcguire in parliament. Mark Kiszka was now top of the league, Kieron second, Ollie Taylor-Yassin 3rd, The Hawk 4th and The Knightrider 5th. 3 former FFL world cup winners were in the bottom 3. Holly Shakeshaft had lost her whole forward line.
Round 4 seemed to be all goals, dancing, excitement and Roy Keane moaning. Morocco were still there, their Keeper and U2 lead singer Bono helped send Spain home on Pens. England beat Senegal. Holly started to regret picking so many Liverpool players. Mark Kiszka was now on 39 points 2 better than Kieron, with The Knightrider and The Hawk just behind. Chris Geoghegan was bottom with 4 points less than he started with.
The last 8 and things started to hot up, when maybe in Qatar, it was bloody freezing in the UK, who remembers World Cups in hot sunny beer gardens? Well I watched Brazil go out on pens to Croatia on my phone sat outside Aroma on a very cold night. Argentina beat The Netherlands and Morocco pulled off another shock, sending Portugal and Ronaldo out. Then the big one, England v France. On a very cold night we went to the Jolly Brewer to watch the match in a heated marque. A combination of French skill, poor ref, very poor VAR and sadly Kane blasting over bar was enough to send England out. The scores took a bit of a beating, Kieron was 1 point better than Mark and 4 ahead of The Knightrider. At the Bottom Chris Geoghegan was still in a negative score. Things were so bad Blessing started praying for him.
Somehow the World Cup bravely carried on without England into the semi-finals. Messi and Argentina were too strong for Croatia, while France ended Morocco’s dream. A great couple of games saw Chris score big and move off the bottom, maybe the praying worked. Senol was now bottom. Kieron now had 40 points and 1 point lead over Mark Kiszka. Kieron was favourite to now win the World Cup.
The final, what game, Argentina two up and cruising to an easy win. Kieron was top and looking good, Mark needed his Argentina defender Martinez to come on to stand any chance of winning it, For 80 minutes it was just like that. Then everything changed. Mbappe scored and Kieron’s lead was gone. One minute later and he scored again. Now Mark was in the driving seat. However one substitution could change everything. Messi scored again Extra time. All the goals flying in saw The Knightrider and the Hawk drifted away from the top. Gareth Dyke had a great final day and finished a brilliant 3rd. Mbappe scored a third and joined Geoff Hurst in the history books. Argentina didn’t make the change and the World Cup winner was Mark Kiska, with a record 49 points. Kieron Mullin came second. Tappy 4th and Paul Taylor 5th. Kev Dillon finished 12th in his final FFL (always welcome for a comeback one day). The Knightrider drifted on the final day and finished 9th. The highest placed female manager was Sally Sands in 8th. All the excitement and goals in the final saw Steve Tatham finish last. From winning Euro FFL 2020 to bottom at the World Cup. The Italy of FFL.
Argentina won the world cup on penalties. In the end it really was Messi’s World Cup. It sad to think it will most likely be the last World Cup for Messi, Ronaldo and Modric. Mbappe won the Golden Boot. When you base it purely on sport it was an amazing World Cup, Great game, lots of goals and a great final, however it’s impossible to ignore the human rights abuse and corruption involved in this world cup.
So that’s it, back to the FFL, see you for the Euros in 18 months.

The Mr. Clean of the World Cup: why everything is spic and span in Japan
Every match, the Japanese leave their dressing room in perfect condition, with folded cranes, representing peace and happiness.
Against Croatia, Japan lost the penalty phase due to lack of experience missing in that way the qualification for the quarter-finals of a World Cup for the first time. But off the field, the "blue samurai" received loads of praise. After every match they leave their dressing room in a pristine condition. Why do they turn out to be Mr. Clean of the World Cup?
Four years ago, at the World Cup in Russia, Japan was eliminated in the round of 16 by Belgium after giving up a 2–0 lead. A national drama for the Asian country, but when the inconsolable players left the Rostov Arena, their dressing room was anything but a battlefield that was left behind. There was even a thank you note for organiser Russia.
A little dirty
In Qatar, the team continues with the same momentum. The 'blue samurai' defeated Germany 2-1 in the opening match, but afterwards no trace of a wild party. The floor was mopped, the towels were nicely folded in front of the table and all the garbage (papers, water bottles ...) was gone. The dressing room was actually cleaner than before the arrival of Japan.
In fact, on the table were eleven origami cranes. They stand for peace and happiness, and are also used in the Adidas shirts that Japan wears during the World Cup. Also in front of it was a note in Japanese and Arabic that read, "Thank you."
"It's just part of our culture," says journalist Kumi Kinihora. “We were brought up that way by our parents and at school. Everywhere we've been, we have to leave it tidy. This is not only true in football. If a Japanese does not do that, he does not feel well. Then we feel a little dirty.”
The Japanese Football Association calls it "atarimae", or: logical. Although it is not the football players themselves who scrub the floor, but the equipment men. The players are obliged to bring their own stuff and not to leave anything behind, as is the case with many other teams.
Clean heart, clean stands
"This tradition did not start on a specific day," said national team coach Hayime Moriyasu. "It just has always been that way." Those images were also shared en masse on Instagram. and Twitter, but that turned out to be fake news. Someone had distributed photos of Italy's dressing room after the defeat to North Macedonia on March 22. The Italians lost their chances at the World Cup there and then left the cloakroom in Palermo behind as a pigsty.
