Documentaire extrêmement émouvant sur deux femmes qui se sont rencontrées à Ravensbrück le soir de Noël 1943.

L’une, Nelly, est belge, chanteuse d’opéra et résistante. L’autre, Nadine, est d’origine chinoise et belge, de parents diplomates et vit à Paris dans les salons lesbiens.

Elles se rencontrent dans le camp de Ravensbrück et tombent amoureuses. Elles ne se quitteront plus. Elle s’aident à vivre. À survivre.

Nelly est déplacée à Mauthausen en 1944 (on ne sait pas pourquoi) et les deux femmes sont séparées. Mais elles survivent miraculeusement et se retrouvent vers 1946. Comment? Le film n’apporte pas de réponse.

Elles vont ensuite vivre ensemble à Caracas au Vénézuela jusqu’à la mort de Nadine.

On a des lettres et un journal qu’elles ont écrit à deux mains (personne n’a jamais voulu le publier) ainsi que plusieurs petits films tournés par Nadine qui les montrent dans leur intérieur au Vénézuela, le tout conservé par la petite-fille de Nelly qui vit aujourd’hui dans le nord de la France.

C’est très émouvant mais triste aussi. Parce que ces deux femmes qui s’aimaient et ont vécu ensemble toute leur vie après la guerre n’ont jamais parlé de leur relation aux deux petites-filles de Nelly. La relation n’était pas évoquée en tant que telle.

On comprend à demi-mot que la fille de Nelly n’acceptait pas la relation de sa mère avec Nadine. Grosse homophobe donc. Et la petite-fille est clairement dans le déni vu le nombre de fois qu’elle parle d’ « amitié » pour décrire la relation de sa grand-mère avec Nadine.

Le mot « lesbienne » est prononcé une seule et unique fois par une autre lesbienne qui faisait partie du cercle de Nathalie Clifford Barney auquel appartenait également Nadine.

Bien sûr, il y a des traces de leur relation grâce aux écrits, photos et films mais il y a tout un pan de la vie de ces femmes qui est complètement passé à la trappe puisqu’elles ne pouvaient pas vivre complètement ouvertement.

Et puis il y a évidemment le tabou et le silence sur les camps de concentration. Personne ne voulait en entendre parler après-guerre. Donc c’est un double silence: silence sur l’homosexualité et silence sur les traumatismes du camp de concentration.

Et malgré tout ça, ces deux femmes ont survécu, ont construit une nouvelle vie ensemble, se sont aimées et sont enterrées dans le même cimetière à Bruxelles. Si ça n’est pas de la résilience.

J’aurais aimé qu’on en sache un peu plus sur Nadine. Sa famille, ses parents. Mais le film nous en dit peu.

WHAT MADE OUR DAY UNIQUE

“We wanted our wedding to be a big party with all our family and friends. We didn’t want to have a traditional wedding (it did have elements) but we cut out a few things that we didn’t want and that people expected us to have! We made sure that everything we did was our choice and done our way. I’m so glad we did as we didn’t have any regrets. One of the biggest things for us was to have a child-free wedding (apart from Steve’s son, Jack) and I think most of our guests were happy about this too!” – Nadine & Steve

Incidentally, one of Nadine and Steve’s favourite wedding day moments was walking into the wedding reception at Tithe Barn Bolton Abbey, to the sound of their wedding guests clapping and cheering as their bridesmaid announced the new Mr and Mrs, it totally took them by surprise and was one of the best feelings. They’d just been for some couples portraits with their photographer Taylor-Hughes who had made them feel completely at ease resulting in some incredible portraits by the ruins.

INSPIRATION & STYLING

“We didn’t want a ‘theme’ to our day we just wanted it to be relaxed, simple and have a slightly modern feel about it. The venue we chose spoke for itself. It was absolutely stunning both inside and out and we didn’t want to do anything to take away from that. Even though the barn is over 500 years old I knew I didn’t want to have an old-style wedding so everything we did was done in a simple but contemporary way and with colours that complemented our surroundings. “ – Nadine & Steve

Two of the most esteemed figures in the wine industry marked a major landmark evening when Baroness Ariane de Rothschild joined the distinguished Herzog Family in an invitation-only reception for the wine community this February. The event celebrated the 30th anniversary of the groundbreaking partnership between Vins Edmond de Rothschild Héritage and Royal Wine Corp. in the production of world-class kosher wine — the first such collaboration in winemaking history.

The intimate gathering took place at The Fulton by Chef Jean-George Vongerichten at Pier 17 in New York City, which was transformed into a fully kosher event for one night only by RAVE caterers. Attendees enjoyed a cocktail reception followed by a luxurious dinner, each course meticulously paired with extraordinary wines and champagnes from the House of Rothschild. The guests also had an opportunity to meet Baroness de Rothschild, a primary dignitary in the world of wine and exemplar of philanthropy and commitment to Israel.

“We are delighted to welcome Baroness Ariane de Rothschild to tonight’s celebration. We are so appreciative that she made the journey to join us for this unique event marking our 30-year wine-making partnership and look forward to a long-lasting relationship for many years to come,” said Royal Wine President Nathan Herzog. The Royal Wine Corporation is the world’s largest importer and exporter of kosher wine and the largest kosher winery in the United States.

“I’m am so pleased to be here in the United States to celebrate with Royal Wine and the Herzog family our shared views, kosher wine making and continued philanthropy,” said Baroness Rothschild. “Here’s to the next 30 years!”

Since 1986, Vins Edmond de Rothschild Héritage and Royal Wine have been producing the Barons Edmond & Benjamin de Rothschild Haut-Médoc at Château Clarke in Listrac-Médoc. Château Clarke Baron Edmond de Rothschild and Château Malmaison Baronne Nadine de Rothschild are highly respected estates in Bordeaux, and in the wine industry as a whole. Head winemaker and technical director Fabrice Darmaillacq, also present at the dinner, has even further enhanced the quality of the wines, which are now available in limited production kosher cuvées, as well. Both kosher cuvées of Château Clarke 2016 and Château Malmaison were served at the anniversary dinner elaborated by Chef Jean-George.

Chef Vongerichten’s specially created menu in collaboration with RAVE caterers included Florida Red Snapper Ceviche, Grilled Duck Breast & Duck Confie, Seared Black Sea Bass, Grilled Beef Filet, and an assortment of tantalizing desserts. Exquisite new releases were poured with each course: Champagne Barons de Rothschild Rosé, Château Malmaison Moulis-en-Médoc 2016 ; Herzog Russian River Chardonnay 2017 ; Château Clarke Listrac-Médoc 2016; Barons Edmond et Benjamin de Rothschild Haut Médoc 2014, 2015 and 2016 30th Anniversary Edition; and Champagne Barons de Rothschild Brut Cuvée.

The event served as an early launch for the 14th annual Kosher Food & Wine Experience, held on President’s Day at Chelsea Piers in Manhattan. Hosted by Royal Wine, this annual sold-out showcase features the newest in fine kosher wines, spirits, and creative cuisine from hundreds of the foremost wineries, chefs, caterers, restaurateurs, and gourmet specialty companies.
