Okay so I can’t sleep so I’m going to speculate where I think Pokemon gen 8 will take place, as well as other things like starters and whether it’ll be stand alone like 1st 3rd or 5th gen or heavily reliant like the rest. I have a few ideas for regions, but I’d definitely have a better idea if we could keep track of any recent scouting vacations Game Freak Associates have done.

Anyway I’ll put some stuff under the cut. Fair warning, I’m not an expert on any country, and I’m going to keep that in mind as I speculate.

1. China

This one I think is a bit more strategic than anything since GF did add Chinese to the selected languages, and it would be a great opportunity to branch out with marketing. Lots of legend and culture could be used here, especially the great wall of China, but they probably would need to be less stereotypical with how they represent it considering the market.

I’m not going to lie and say I know much about the country, but given how famous the wall is, you’d bet your ass that’d be victory road or something related to legendaries.

Starter Pokemon could include a grass panda, a fire rabbit, and a water slug or snail.

2. Canada

I say this one because they have technically been there once if memory serves (I know a movie team was there). It would certainly be a change of weather compared to Alola, and give us access to the arctic circle.

Again, not an expert, but I could definitely see a connection to nature playing a huge roll in this game, and possibly be less about city stuff and more about the wilderness. The Pokemon league could take place on the north pole if they branch out the map far enough.

The starters could be based on a grass moose, a fire jackelope, and a water polar bear.

3. Australia

What better way to sell a Switch title with a large world to explore, and Australia already has animals that are arguably more dangerous than Pokemon anyway, and could be used as a way to give us a large pokedex of over 130 new Pokemon easily.

Australia has some interesting legends if I remember correctly, and I would love to see the Dream Time explored a bit. You could even have a thylacine fossil!

Starter Pokemon could include a grass scorpion (we’ve yet to explore bugs with grass types), a fire snake, and a water platypus. The Pikachu clone would most definitely be a kangaroo rat but they could surprise us to have it evolve into an electric fighting kangaroo.

4. Central America

Pokemon Sage is definitely taking place in an interesting region of the world, and I’d hate to steal it’s thunder, but if it came to the Switch, I’d be all over it. Of course you have the indigenous legends to give it an exciting background, but I’d also love to experience the traditional culture associated with it as well, and could see it being a very colorful game.

Of course you cannot deny that they would use indigenous legend to inspire the legends, and I think the region would make a great place to deviate from gyms with an alternative similar to trials that take place in ruins and what not.

Starters here would maybe include a grass panther, a fire bull, and a water crab.

These are my top picks. I don’t think anywhere European is coming anytime soon simply because it’s too close to Kalos/France and we just had that in gen 6 (do not bring up Unova and Alola being the US because they’re wayyy too far apart for it to count), and Africa, while an exciting thought, would be tricky to nail down any one specific area and to avoid areas that might not be politically or culturably sensible at present time. I would welcome any game that decides to prove me wrong, however.

My main thing that I WANT to happen is for Pokemon Switch version is for there to be a diverse pokedex that introduces enough Pokemon to sustain itself without so much reliance on past generations as the entirety of the 3ds era has been. I would love for it to be like Unova with a completely isolated pokedex that forces you to use new Pokemon, but after the backlash from idiots that didn’t appreciate it, I would accept something akin to Hoenn. However, I would be REALLY down for an entirely new pokedex with the only hints of past Pokemon being regional variants. We’re on the Switch, after all, so we could afford the extra diversity and huge variety.

However, I’m also a sensible man and know that Gen 8 has to sell the Switch. People are going to get it regardless, but Game Freak and Nintendo are going to want it to appeal to as many fans as possible. As much as I’d hate it, I foresee it with just as heavy a reliance on past gens, if not a bigger focus somehow, than the last two, with probably another lineup of less than 100 new Pokemon again.

Typically new console generations tend to be a “testing the waters” generation, such as how bland Sinnoh was at first in Diamond and Pearl (before Platinum fixed it) with it’s very heavy reliance on past gens, versus Unova that came directly after once they knew what they were doing and had a steady fan base with the hardware required. Similarly, Kalos relied so heavily on the past that we got Kanto megas given to us, Charizard and Mewtwo got two Megas, Santelune forest is just Viridian forest but Frenchier, and other call BACKS. Sun and Moon fix some of the stuff that Kalos didn’t quite do right, and stretched the graphics to the limit with a slightly heavier emphasis on the new, with callbacks to past gens expected due to the 20th anniversary.

Given how skeptical many fans are with the Switch already, they’ll probably try to appeal to older fans again, but more akin to X and Y. The Switch is already a very successful console, but they’ll want to maximize that profit. As such, especially due to requests for open world Botw style games, I also predict maybe not a total open world because they’ve already stated Pokemon doesn’t really do well with that for their current story formula, but maybe something slightly more open. This could include something akin to Kanto’s map with a centralized location with Saffron being smack dab between 4 cities, but also branching towns that start and end with singular points but have different options between.

I definitely feel that adventure will be a big vibe next gen, so hopefully whatever region we get can accommodate for it. Just don’t expect too deep of a story for now.

And please. Game Freak. I want to be wrong here. I know you guys can give us 100+ new Pokemon. I know you can give us 130+ new Pokemon. Just take that risk. It’s fun. We’ve coddled older fans long enough.
