She came as a freshman into Collegiate High School and said she took many liberal arts classes at the school, along with the Global Scholars Honors Program and the Chamber Music Program. She said one reason she wanted to go to school was to have enough time for academics and music.

“I play music, I’m a flautist and one of the things that really mattered to me was the time to practice, so in a more traditional school schedule, I didn’t really have the time to devote to school in addition to the practice I needed to get to the level I wanted to be, “said Hitachi-Kizziah. “When I saw Collegiate, for me it was essentially the freedom and schedule that come with college, but I was also very interested in taking classes at school because I think there is something for class at To say professors who are very passionate about things that they are specialists in the classes they teach. “

Third Bellevue Kroger employee tests positive

A third employee at the Highway 100 Bellevue Kroger has tested positive for COVID-19, a spokesperson for the grocery store chain said Thursday evening. 

Health officials notified Kroger of the positive test. It

"Upon learning of the case we communicated with and supported our store team. The associate has not worked at the store for 4 days and between that time the store has been cleaned and sanitized multiple times including by a third party," an email from a Kroger spokesperson indicated. 

Two other associates reported positive tests to the location on Tuesday. 

The company announced further changes at the Bellevue and other stores soon, including:

Enhanced daily sanitation practices at all stores, including cleaning commonly used areas more often like cashier stations, self-checkouts, credit card terminals, food service counters and shelves.

President Trump approves disaster declaration

President Donald Trump approved a major disaster declaration in Tennessee on Thursday, according to a release from the White House. 

The order includes federal assistance, including funds, to supplement state and local recovery efforts in areas affected by COVID-19 since Jan. 20. The funds are available to state and eligible local governments as well as some private nonprofits through the Federal Emergency Management Agency. 

It was not immediately clear how much funding was made available or when it would be accessible. 

All members of Tennessee's congressional delegation on Monday sent a letter to Trump requesting that he approve additional federal funds for the state in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

The bipartisan group of lawmakers, including U.S. Sens. Lamar Alexander and Marsha Blackburn, along with nine representatives, wrote the letter urging Trump to approve Gov. Bill Lee's request to declare a major disaster as a result of the spread of COVID-19.

According to the letter, "Tennessee needs additional resources," including assistance for the state and for individuals, funds for hazard mitigation and approval to federally fund the deployment of Tennessee National Guard members as part of the state's coronavius response.

Around 300 Tennessee National Guard members have so far been deployed to assist at remote testing sites.

Trump has approved federal disaster declarations in a number of states. 

State board to issue high school graduation guidance next week

Tennessee’s Board of Education will address graduation and teacher licensure requirements in a special called meeting next week.

“Our Board takes our responsibility to students, educators, and districts very seriously, especially in times such as these,” Lillian Hartgrove, chair of the State Board of Education, said in a release. “Our members and staff are standing by to make this process as smooth and transparent as possible under these circumstances.”

On March 19, state lawmakers approved a bill directing the board to revise high school graduation requirements for the 2019-20 school year to ensure high school seniors who were affected by closures do not fail to receive a diploma.

The bill cancels any other required state tests for graduation or accountability and ensures teachers aren't punished if they aren't able to fulfill state licensure requirements.

The bill also removes requirements for TNReady testing and gives Education Commissioner Penny Schwinn the power to provide waivers to districts for not meeting the statewide requirement of 180 instructional classroom days. 

The board meeting is scheduled for April 9 at 2 p.M. CDT.

Music City Center eyed as possible regional site for COVID-19 patients

The state is eyeing Nashville's Music City Center as a site to expand hospital bed capacity and treat patients positive with COVID-19, according to people familiar with those plans.

Two people familiar with the plans said the site in downtown Nashville could serve as a 1,000- to 1,200-bed, non-ICU facility for positive patients

Tennessee COVID-19 cases rise to 2,845 on Thursday

The Tennessee Department of Health announced there are at least 2,845 reported cases of the coronavirus in the state as of Thursday afternoon, up from 2,683 on Tuesday.

Thirty two people have died and 263 are hospitalized, up from 24 deaths and 200 hospitalizations on Thursday.  

TDH reports 220 people have recovered from reported cases of the virus in the state. 

Chattanooga mayor issues 'shelter in place' order

Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke signed Executive Order 2020-06 on Thursday, which directs everyone in Chattanooga to observe a comprehensive shelter in place order. 

The order also restricts non-essential travel, suspends access to city-owned public spaces, closes all non-essential businesses, and closes child care programs that aren’t serving essential personnel. 

The order steps:

Directing everyone in Chattanooga to observe a comprehensive shelter in place order. All Chattanoogans must remain in their homes for all but the most critical activities -- going to work at an essential business, getting groceries, or receiving medical attention.

Closing additional businesses and putting new health and safety requirements on businesses that must remain open. 

Closing child care centers and daycare centers to everyone except the children of essential personnel. 

Suspending access to city-owned parks and public spaces like the Walnut Street Bridge, Stringers Ridge, and Coolidge Park. 

A previous executive order mandated the closure of non-essential businesses that could not comply with social distancing requirements. 

Nashville firefighter tests positive for COVID-19

A Nashville Fire Department firefighter has tested positive for COVID-19, fire department spokesman Joseph Pleasant said Thursday.

The firefighter was off shift on accrued sick leave prior to his diagnosis. Other personnel assigned to his fire station and shift will be monitored, Pleasant said. If they develop symptoms, he said, they will follow NFD protocols and be tested.

Personnel take their temperature at the beginning and end of their shift.

The firefighter is the second NFD employee to test positive for the virus in the past week. On March 26, a employee in the Logistics Division tested positive.

The NFD employee has been recovering at home.

FDA changes guidelines for when gay men can donate blood

During the coronavirus pandemic and a blood shortage, the U.S. Federal Drug Administration relaxed guidelines for when gay men may give blood. 

While advocates have pushed for the FDA to lift rules entirely, the agency will allow gay men to give blood if they haven't had sexual contact with another man for the last three months. Previously, the rules stated for at least a year. The same guidance is also applicable to women, who have had sexual contact with a bisexual man. 

The American Red Cross is urging healthy residents to make an appointment and donate blood as the country faces a “severe blood shortage” due to the coronavirus outbreak. 

Davidson County cases rise to 785

Metro Nashville Public Health Department reported 785 cases of COVID-19 in Davidson County on Thursday, an increase from 673 cases on Wednesday.

Officials reported a fifth death on Thursday — an 73-year-old man.

Dr. Alex Jahangir, chairman of the Metro Nashville Board of Health and Metro Coronavirus Task Force said patients range in age from 1-month-old to 84-years-old. He also said 20 patients were hospitalized, 665 were self-isolating with mild to managable symptoms and 95 had recovered.

Of the 785 confirmed cases, 63 people who have tested positive are Davidson County healthcare workers.

Three testing sites are open across the county. The centers operate from 9 a.M. To 3 p.M. On Monday, Wednesday and Fridays and are located here:

The Tennessee Department of Health announced there are at least 2,683 reported cases of the coronavirus in the state as of Wednesday afternoon, up from 2,239 on Tuesday.

TDH reports 137 people have recovered from reported cases of the virus in the state. 

On Wednesday, for the first time, the health department released figures on the number of coronavirus-related deaths by county. The highest count, seven, was in Sumner County, where a Gallatin nursing home was evacuated due to an intense spread of the disease within the facility. 

As of Wednesday, the CDC said there have been at least 186,101 cases reported in the United States. 

State numbers are reported daily around 2 p.M. And may lag behind metro and local health department reports, the agency indicated. 

Metro Nashville Public Health Department reported 673 cases of COVID-19 in Davidson County on Wednesday, an increase from 541 cases on Tuesday.

Officials reported a fourth death on Wednesday — an 83-year-old man. 

Dr. Alex Jahangir, chairman of the Metro Nashville Board of Health and Metro Coronavirus Task Force said patients range in age from 2-months-old to 84-years-old. He also said 18 patients were hospitalized, 561 were self-isolating and 90 had recovered.

During Wednesday daily COVID-19 news briefing, Metro's Health Director Dr. Michael Caldwell said the health department has received hundreds of reports of people and businesses disobeying Nashville's social distancing orders.

The health department told The Tennessean they've separately received 43 complaints on businesses for being out of compliance. Twenty-four have been investigated and closed. Officials are working to close the remainder and continue to respond to complaints from the public. 

Caldwell is asking the public to report complaints.

As of late Wednesday morning, officials had not fined anyone or pulled any permits.

Metro Nashville Police Chief Steve Anderson said his department has been reluctant to criminalize what is otherwise lawful behavior in the city.

“We’ve not seen any increase in crime that we can attribute to the ‘stay at home’ order or the coronavirus," Anderson said. 

Anderson also said that every day, MNPD has between 25 and 30 officers on self-quarantine awaiting coronavirus test results. On Tuesday night alone, he said, they had two officers exposed who are now self-quarantined.

During the city's daily COVID-19 news briefing, Dr. Alex Jahangir, chairman of the Metro Nashville Board of Health and Metro Coronavirus Task Force, reminded people to follow the "safer at home" order, which now runs through April 24.

Jahangir said officials are asking businesses where shoppers gather — including grocery stores, big box stores, pharmacies and convenience stores — to take further steps to encourage further social distancing by doing the following:

Place mats or tape on the floor every 6-8 feet to identify to customers where they need to stand.

Keep employees' break rooms spread apart.

No more than two people in an elevator at one time.

Do not allow groups larger than 10 people to gather in one place.
