Renault Dauphine US, 1958. The North American version of Renault’s rear-engined family car was initially a sales success, even outselling VW’s Beetle in 11 states. However the Dauphine quickly developed a reputation for rusting and eccentric road manners and sales plummeted to the point where two ships loaded with Renaults were turned around in the mid-Atlantic because the docks in New York were already overcrowded with unsold cars.
