Canadian Matthew Wong rose to the pinnacle of the art world during his short career, a mere six years from 2013, when he began painting and drawing in earnest, and his death by suicide in 2019 at the age of 35. Growing up in Japan, Shio Kusaka had little interest in art. But her grandmother led traditional tea ceremonies, and those rituals helped guide Kusaka, many years later, toward making ceramics. "After being served, you spend time observing—the cup, the spoon," explains the artist, perched in the vast Los Angeles studio she shares with her husband, painter Jonas Wood. "This taught me to stop and look."

@sothebys ・・・ Drenched in saturated scarlet, 'Red Pot with White Blouse' is Jonas Wood’s homage to artist Henri Matisse, whose flattening of space and graphic application has remained one of Wood’s chief artistic influences. In 'Red Pot with White Blouse,' Wood takes a 3D pot—a key recurring symbol and influence of his wife Shio Kusaka’s celebrated ceramic practice—and flattens it to accommodate the 2D oil painting medium, accentuating his collage-like style, propensity for spatial distortion, and bold fauvist color, much like Matisse. Hailing from his coveted series of Red Pot paintings, 'Red Pot with White Blouse' comes to auction at #SothebysNewYork this May in The NOW Evening Auction presented in partnership with @celine. #SothebysNow #JonasWood #HenriMatisse #matisse (en The Royal Poinciana Plaza) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqQMnMMuRry/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
