I did it for Davey and Angel. Might as well do the other way around for Asher and Babe Plus it’s been a while since I wrote and it’s been driving me crazy The names of Asher’s family members were completely my creation. I clenched my fingers around my steering wheel for a second. What on Earth did I have to be nervous about? It wasn’t like I didn’t see them every couple weeks for dinner. It wasn’t like I hadn’t made my own friendship with both of them, independently of Asher...

I shook my head and hopped out of the car, slamming the door shut behind me.

The driveway was a little long with a gentle slope, but it had never particularly bothered me.

At the front door, I chewed the inside of my cheek and rang the bell.

It was one of those smart doorbells, and I heard a, “Come on in, it’s unlocked!” through the speaker. I grabbed the handle and pushed the door open.

“Were you expecting me?” I asked jokingly as Asher’s mom, Paulina (Lina) appeared around one of the walls. Asher told me that his parents always meant to get some of the walls knocked out to open up the main living space, but that all the walls they wanted to knock out in particular were load-bearing and they were always advised not to.

Lina smiled the same smile as Asher’s and laughed. “No. Adrian just got home and hadn’t locked the door yet,” she replied. “Why are you coming through the front door, honey? You and Ash usually come through the side door.”

“Ash isn’t with me,” I said.

“Well, I noticed that,” Lina teased. She opened her arms. “Hug?”

“Always.” I wrapped my arms around her. She looked so much like Asher. Same deep, bronze tan. Same warm black curls. Same wolfish amber eyes. She acted like he did too. A goofball with an open heart.

“Come in, come in,” she said, pulling me by the hug into the back of the house where the kitchen was. “Adrian, Ash’s mate is here!”

Asher’s dad smiled and chuckled when he saw me. “Hey, kid,” he greeted, giving me a side-arm hug. “What brings you here all by your lonesome?” He had the same gravelly voice as Asher did. Which, as far as I’d noticed, was the only physical thing Asher had inherited from his dad apart from height. Lina was a bit taller than average—usually came with being a shifter, apparently—but Adrian was six-foot. So Ash being 6′2″ came from his dad more than his mom.

“Well,” I said, taking a deep breath and sighing sharply. “I have something I want to talk to you both about.”

Asher’s parents exchanged a glance. “Do we need to sit down?” Lina asked. “Are you and Ash okay?”

I shook my head. “We’re fine, you don’t need to sit down. It’s just...” I licked my lips as I realized how dry my mouth was. “Ash and I have been together for... over four years, now. I love him more than anything. And—and don’t get me wrong—I’m happy as hell being his mate and I want to spend the rest of my life with him. But... but I came to... to ask...” I swallowed, trying to get rid of the lump in my throat. It didn’t go anywhere so I decided to power through. “I came to ask for your blessing to ask Asher to marry me. I’m unempowered and... and marriage means something to me the way being mates means something to Ash.”

“Oh, oh baby,” Lina said, reaching out to me. I leaned and let her cradle my face in her hands. Her eyes had gotten misty fast. “We would be honored.” She wrapped her arms around me, holding me close. “You’re already part of our family no matter what—and Adrian and I are both humanborn. We know what marriage can mean to unempowereds. That’s why we got married too, in addition to being mates, when a lot of shifters our age didn’t care much to.” She kissed the side of my head behind my ear.

I let a few tears of relief fall from my eyes as I held onto Lina. I knew I’d had no reason to be nervous but that didn’t mean I hadn’t been.

Adrian came over and wrapped his arms around both of us. “Welcome to the family, kiddo. Legally. In the eyes of the unempowered government, anyway.” He squeezed my shoulder.

I laughed—so did Asher’s parents.

“Thank you both,” I said.

“So... I take it you’re planning on proposing to him?” Lina asked as they both released me from the shifter-strength bone-crushing hug.

I nodded. “I know it’s corny but... I was thinking on Valentine’s Day. Give me some time to get a ring for him.”

Lina laughed and leaned against the kitchen counter. “I’d offer to find my notes of his ring size somewhere, but that was for his high school class ring—and he didn’t fill out until he was twenty-one, so his hands are bigger now.” She snuck a sly, side-eyed glance at Adrian, who pretended not to notice.

“Not my fault he took after me being a late bloomer,” Adrian said nonchalantly, still pretending not to pay attention as he searched through a cupboard.

Lina shook her head with a fond smile on her face. “I wouldn’t have it any other way. Leah—” Asher’s sister. “—matured early like I did. It wasn’t a bad thing for Asher to fill out later like his dad.” She popped a kiss on Adrian’s shoulder and reached past him into the cupboard he was still pretending to search for a large bowl she set on the counter.

I laughed. “Not a bad thing at all. You both made a very handsome son.”

“Hell yeah we did,” Lina agreed. Adrian just chuckled. Lina went back to bustling around the kitchen to assemble dinner for her and Adrian. “You’ll have to call Leah, by the way, and tell her that she and her husband will have to fly back to Dahlia for the wedding.”

“Oh, trust me, if Ash says yes, we will.”

Adrian leveled me with a look. “If?” He barked a single laugh. “Kiddo, no way in hell will he say no.”

“I-I mean, I-I’m just saying...” I trailed off with a shrug.

Both his parents snorted. “Honey, never before have we seen him as in love with anyone as he is with you,” Lina said. “He had a small handful of partners before you two met but... nah. Nothin’ doin’.” She shook her head. “He never felt as deeply for any of them as he is for you. For you he’s absolutely moony-eyed.” She set an affectionate hand on my shoulder. “He won’t say no.”

“Hope not,” I said.

“He won’t. Promise.”

I jolted as my office phone went off on my desk. I grabbed it and answered with my name and department. “Hi there. This is Ellie from Traysen Family Jewelers.”

“Oh. Hi Ellie. Nice to hear from you.”

“You too. I’m just calling to let you know that your order is ready,” Ellie said. “My dad made the ring himself. You’re welcome to come pick it up whenever you get a chance. And, just a reminder, we’ve got a free thirty-day size warranty. So if you accidentally chose the wrong size, feel free to bring it back in and we’ll adjust it. We know that getting an engagement ring can be a little difficult if you’re trying to keep it a surprise.” She chuckled.

“Ain’t that the truth,” I said. “Remind me your hours again?”

“We’re open ten-AM to six-PM Monday-through-Friday, and ten-AM to two-PM on Saturday. Closed Sunday.”

I glanced at my computer clock. For once, I didn’t think I’d have to work late. “Fantastic. I should be able to come pick it up tonight,” I said.

“Great! I’ll see you soon, then.”

“See you soon.”

“Oh! One more thing. Dad wanted me to remind you that engagement rings of this price come with a free silicone ring as well. Would you prefer black, white, or grey?”

I blinked. “Let’s go with white,” I said, imagining the way a white ring would pop against Asher’s bronze tan.

“Perfect. I’ll add a white ring to your package. Thank you so much!”

“You too! See you soon.”

“Uh-huh. Buh-bye!” Ellie said.

The line disconnected. I set my phone down on the receiver and tried not to vibrate out of my chair in excitement. Not a minute too soon. Valentine’s was two weeks away and I’d started to get worried that I’d accidentally put off the order too long—despite ordering it before the holiday season. My family had always gone to the Traysens for nice jewelry. My parents were good friends with Ellie’s dad, John Traysen, from high school and trusted him as a jeweler more than any big-name brands.

When five o’clock rolled around, I launched out of my seat and rushed out of the building.

“Hi Ellie!” I greeted as I threw the door open to the small shop.

She beamed at me. “Well hello there. I have your box with the main ring, the little bag with the silicone one, and your receipt right back here. Give me a second.” She disappeared through a door to the back room for a few moments before reemerging. “So. This is that boyfriend you’ve had a couple years now, right?”

I nodded. “Yup. My Asher.”

“Aww. How sweet. Best of luck.”

“Thanks!”

We exchanged a brief, friendly hug before I left the shop.

I drove home and hid the box, bag, and receipt in my work bag before getting out of my car.

The second the apartment door opened, a familiar, “Baaabe! I missed you! How was your day?” greeted me.

I smiled at Asher. “It was good,” I said cheerfully. “I love you.”

“Love you too.” He paused his game, got off the couch, and came to give me a kiss. I returned it with passionate enthusiasm, cupping his face.

When I pulled away, I stared at those beautiful eyes of his and imagined our future.

Asher. My future husband.

Assuming he said yes, of course.

And remember, your key always works no matter what. It sure does feel cool controlling my door with a smartphone, or video chatting with the FedEx guy to accept a package when I'm not actually present. The Smart Keypad is the kind of thing that should probably be included with August's main Smart Lock, and a good wireless doorbell is what, $30? Diving in headfirst is a bit of a gamble in its own right, but remember that your key will always work just fine. But that's true of most smart home gear you'd be just fine with existing, cheaper options. That's a ton of money to throw down for something many will view as nonessential. I can't even actually use it!Īnd when you add all of this stuff up, it's $480 before tax. But remember that you've got to have that wired doorbell to get the Doorbell Cam working, which is sort of a bummer. I've definitely come to appreciate using the August Smart Lock, and the company's two newest products make the whole setup work better and give me slightly more confidence that I won't find myself locked out at the worst possible moment.
