In the match between Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians in the Women's Premier League (WPL 2024), held on Tuesday in Delhi, pace bowler Shabnim Ismail of Mumbai Indians set the record for the fastest delivery in women's cricket, surpassing the barrier of 130 kilometers per hour. Ismail delivered a lightning-quick ball at 132.1 kilometers per hour, breaking the speed record in women's cricket.
During the third over of the match, Ismail's full delivery struck Capitals' captain Meg Lanning before the umpire intervened, as MI appealed for leg-before-wicket. This impressive feat comes after Ismail had previously clocked 128.3 kilometers per hour during the inaugural match of the WPL 2024 season against Delhi Capitals at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
After missing several matches, Ismail returned to the eleven and made an impact, taking a wicket in a four-over spell and conceding 46 runs. Capitals managed to score 192 runs for the loss of four wickets in their twenty overs, securing a narrow victory over Mumbai Indians by 29 runs.
Apart from her domestic success, Ismail also holds the record for the fastest delivery in international women's cricket. Before her recent achievement in 2024, she had surpassed the 127 kilometers per hour mark during the 2022 ICC Women's World Cup, exceeding the previous record set in 2016 against the West Indies with a delivery at 128 kilometers per hour. Additionally, in the 2023 Women's T20 World Cup, Ismail led South Africa's bowling attack with consistently rapid deliveries, registering speeds of 119, 122, 126, 120, 125, and 128 kilometers per hour in a single over against England, considered among the fastest overs in women's cricket history.
Ismail retired from international cricket in May 2023 after the T20 World Cup, ending a 16-year career during which she played 241 international matches and claimed 317 wickets across formats. She remains the second-highest wicket-taker in women's ODIs (191) and has led South Africa's T20I bowling charts with 123 wickets.

Former South Africa: Former South Africa pacer Shabnim Ismail, who plays for Mumbai Indians in the Women's Premier League, created history when she bowled the fastest delivery ever recorded in women's cricket.
Ismail broke the record with a delivery that clocked the speed of 132.1km/h (82.08mph) when bowling for the Mumbai Indians in their WPL clash against the Delhi Capitals at Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday.
It was the first time that a delivery in women's cricket has been clocked at a speed greater than 130km/h, with Ismail's thunderbolt smashing into the pad of former Australia captain Meg Lanning on the second ball of the third over of the match, ICC reports.
Ismail, who appeared for South Africa in all eight previous ICC Women's T20 World Cups and only retired from international cricket following last year's tournament on home soil, had previously been clocked as bowling at 128km/h (79.54mph) against the West Indies in 2016 and at 127km/h twice during the most recent edition of the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup in 2022.
However, Ismail's efforts were in vain as she delivered four expensive overs to finish with figures of 1/46 as the MI went down to the DC by 29 runs.

Pakistan Super League Severely Hit, Several Overseas Stars Pull Out Ahead Of New Season
Several high-profile international cricketers have pulled out of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) due to the overlapping of dates with other franchise-based tournaments and many cricket boards denying permission to their players to compete in domestic T20 competitions. The PSL begins in Lahore on February 17 and all the six franchises have been hit hard with several players opting for the Bangladesh Premier League, ILT20 and SA20 leagues.
PSL side Multan Sultans have lost several players they had initially signed up for the upcoming season, with England pace bowler Reece Topley being the latest to pull out due to an injury.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) also said it had not issued a no-objection certificate (NOC) to Topley to play in the PSL.
Some other boards are also having second thoughts about giving no-objection certificates for PSL.
Multan will also be without Pakistan fast bowler Ehsanullah, who has failed to recover from an elbow surgery he suffered last year after the PSL.
Peshawar Zalmi have also lost a big name in Lungi Ngidi of South Africa, while Quetta Gladiators will be without Sri Lanka's Wanandu Hasaranga.
West Indies cricketers Shai Hope, Matthew Forde and Akeal Hosein, South Africa's Tabraiz Shamshi and Rassie van Der Dussen, England's James Vince and Afghanistan's Noor Ahmed and Naveen ul Haq, among others, will also skip the entire tournament.
A PSL franchise owner has asked the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to revisit the tournament window, as it is not possible to get big players when three leagues are happening on after the other.
"The SA20 ended recently and the ILT20 concludes on the day the PSL begins, so it is getting difficult to sign big players now," he said on condition of anonymity.
He also pointed out that January-February is a busy season for international cricket series. Sri Lanka are playing a series against Afghanistan, South Africa are in the middle of a two-Test series against New Zealand while West Indies are playing a series against Australia.
"There is an acute need to change the PSL window, else it will lose its charm if we don't get big overseas names," he added.

The IPL has not only elevated the standard of T20 cricket but has also contributed significantly to the global popularity and commercialization of the sport.
IPL, every year is hosted in India during the time march to May. But this year due to the Lok Sabha elections, BCCI is finding a lot of issues to host IPL in India during the time from March to May. The primary issues include scheduling conflicts, security concerns, and logistical complexities. The election period often demands significant resources and attention from authorities, potentially overlapping with the dates earmarked for the IPL. Security arrangements during elections may strain resources, affecting the ability to ensure a safe and secure environment for the cricket matches. Additionally, the logistical challenges associated with managing venues, transportation, and accommodation may intensify during the election season, impacting the smooth execution of the IPL. Now, due to all these reasons, BCCI have decided to look for a new host country to whom they can give the hosting rights. Few of the earlier seasons of the league have been conducted in various countries like South Africa and UAE due to some or the other reasons, but this time BCCI wants to have a new host for the league to give a chance to some new country to host one of the biggest cricket extravaganzas.

Ex-India Cricketer Lalchand Rajput Appointed UAE Head Coach
ICC Cricket World Cup League: Former Indian cricketer Lalchand Rajput has been appointed the new head coach of UAE men’s team for a three-year period. Rajput, who played two Tests and four ODIs for India from 1985 to 1987, will be taking over from interim head coach Mudassar Nazar.
Rajput, 62, was the manager of the MS Dhoni-captained Indian team winning the inaugural men’s T20 World Cup in 2007 in South Africa and was the head coach of Mumbai Indians in the inaugural edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008.
He also coached Afghanistan from 2016 to 2017, a period where the side notably received their Test-playing status. Rajput also served as Zimbabwe men's head coach from 2018 to 2022.
"I want to thank the Emirates Cricket Board for appointing me for this exciting role. UAE has emerged as one of the stronger Associate Members in recent years and the players have put in some good performances in both ODIs and T20Is. The current batch is exceptionally talented and I look forward to working with them and further harnessing their cricket skills.
"I am confident that the boys buoyed by their exposure to top quality cricket and practice facilities here in Dubai will continue to prosper, UAE cricket has a very bright future and my goal would be to make the team perform more consistently and take them to the next level which I am very confident they are fully capable of," said Rajput in a statement.
His first assignment as UAE’s new head coach will be the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 ODI tri-series being hosted by the side with Scotland and Canada as the other participants.
The tri-series begins on February 28, following which UAE will host Scotland for three T20Is next month. Last year, UAE failed to make the cut for the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup after losing to Nepal in the semi-finals of the Asia-Pacific qualifying event.
"We are delighted to announce the appointment of Lalchand Rajput as UAE men’s head coach. Rajput has a proven track record and has done an exceptional job as a coach for various national and domestic teams around the world. We are confident that under his coaching UAE men’s cricket will flourish further.
"I also want to take this opportunity to thank Mudassar Nazar for his stellar work as the interim head coach. Mudassar will now return to his role as Head of the National Academy Programme where he will continue to identify and groom our future stars," said Mubashshir Usmani, General Secretary Emirates Cricket Board.
