I don’t like writing in first person. But this is my story, so perhaps I have to. First person has always felt so….impersonal to me, especially when you are reading someone’s thoughts and they do not acknowledge the fact that you are listening in on their soul. So perhaps writing you into this snippet will make it a little less uncomfortable for me. Or so I hope. I really like third person because of a separation of the reader and the characters, making them seem more like people in my mind rather than just words on a page recounting a series of interesting events.
Am I just words on a page right now? Am I myself a caricature of the person putting these letters down on the page and if so what does that really mean for-?
And that’s when I recognized them. Walking down the pavement outside of my apartment, looking at the buildings and counting through the numbers on the doors carefully.
They looked….. Odd, for sure. They were wearing regular clothes, but Rowan was still out of place with his braids, scarred cheek, long ears that flicked to catch every sound, and he was still clutching to his bag full of books that Luke had been giving him to read and learn from. It was too hot outside to wear anything more than a tee-shirt and your choice of pants so he had his cloak rolled up under his arm, the fur visibly sticking to his arm where he had begun to sweat. And that was odd. Seeing my characters in this much detail. Or perhaps they were never mine to begin with. I’m fairly certain I can’t just create beings out of nothing just yet, after all.
I wanted to get a better look at the others, but I couldn’t so that from where I was awkwardly hunched to look out my window. I sighed a little. This is going to be a whole thing, isn’t it, I complain to you before unlocking my door and stepping out onto my balcony.
Only Five. Some of the others must have stayed at home, then. Which was good. Dealing with Rowan, Dante, Ander, Ril, and Zach all at once was already going to be a handful and feel a bit awkward. Zach should be able to help some, though, so that was a relief.
I could see it in their eyes the moment they saw me. They recognized me, and don’t mind me if that made me feel quite wonderful. Important, even.
Rowan and Ril both grinned, their smiles so similar that they could have been siblings if it wasn’t obvious that they weren’t. Ril waved and Ander nodded before Zach pointed to one of the stairwells to get to my walkway on the second floor. I slowly trailed to the stairwell they chose, wincing as the sun reflected into my eyes from the cars below.
“Hey!” Ander said, first up the stairs.
I grinned. “Hallo! Wanna come inside? It’s heccin hot out here.”
“Yes please,” Zach said, coming up behind the others, looking vaguely uncomfortable.
I nodded and waved them in, and while I’m thinking about it, I’ll invite you in as well.
My apartment felt very small as we all piled in through the door, and I felt a little self conscious about the fact that there wasn’t really anywhere to sit since the couch would really only fit three people if you squeezed, but this was solved as Dante went to sit on the kitchen floor part, away from the flammable carpet, Ander and Ril took a seat on the carpet, and Rowan and Zach commandeered the couch.
Ril was chattering away, talking about some bug she’d seen on the sidewalk outside, and that made me grin and I forced myself to relax.
“So, I am delighted to meet you guys, but what are you doing here?” I asked, opening my fridge in a slightly mindless way looking for snacks or drinks I could offer them.
“We wanted to meet you,” Dante said from by my knees. “We heard that you…. Were getting prophecies about us?”
I shrugged. “If that’s what it’s called, sure.” Once again, I am delighted that anyone would be really interested in meeting me.
“How much do you know?” Ander asked, curious, rather than worried. Though, since his best friend could see the future, it only made sense that he wouldn’t really mind asking questions like that.
“I dunno. Where are you guys in your story?”
Zach chuckled, and I turned my attention to him. He was wearing a button up shirt, strangely formal. Or maybe not that strange. They did come thinking they were here to meet a prophetess. He met my eyes and I raised an eyebrow at him. He slowly shook his head and I knew not to mention his secret. The others didn’t know yet and I was not ready to deal with meltdowns in my living room just yet.
“Rowan went and survived the topsiders just the other day,” Dante replied, drawing my attention.
I whistled. “Broooo, I remember writing about that. Even I was sweaty when I was putting that down.”
Rowan nodded, a bit of anxiety showing up in his eyes. “Yeah, I would rather not go through that again.”
“I can imagine,” I said with a nod. I passed out drinks after asking everyone what they wanted and then sat down in the doorway that led to my bedroom so I could look at everyone. “How the hecc did you manage to convince Martha to let you come?” Upon seeing the grins and the rather exhausted squint on Zach’s face I laughed and said, “Ah, you didn’t. I’m proud of you.”
The five looked at me, taking me in for a moment and I chuckled again. There was quite a lot of joy filling up my small frame. “You guys are all so awesome. How did I get lucky enough to write down your story?”
Rowan shrugged. “The stars must like you.”
“They must. Hey, if you figure out a way to get me to the Balance, can you take me Jakku Backing?”
Ander nodded this time, Ril giggling at the thought of it. “Absolutely.”
“Blessed,” I replied. “Well, I don’t want to talk too much about your guys’ goings ons. I don’t want to say too much, after all, but would you be interested in looking at my notebooks?”
They all cheered and I did not miss the relieved look in Zach’s eye. He would have to tell the others soon enough, but not now.
Now, onto my favorite activity. Show and tell. If you want to see some of my notebooks, let me know. I can post some pictures of them. I’m quite proud of all of them.
