Luke's Psych Blog #2
Entry #1
Upon entering the second half of the course, I have learned many concepts I have related to thus far. Firstly, I want to discuss our overview of the interdependent vs. independent views of self. As I thought about how I view myself and go about different social relationships, I realized that I fit within an interdependent framework of self. The dynamics within my family and social life reflect this framework, as I have made distinctions on how to act depending on which social situation I am in. Further, I have a tight-knit social group in which I have maintained the same friends for a very long time. To reiterate, this reflects an interdependent view of self, in which I see myself. As I have grown up, my family has stressed aspects of an interdependent culture that promotes a collectivist approach. I have many cousins and my dad grew up in a big family, in which we keep in touch with often. Seeing each other as often as we can is a very important aspect of our family dynamic, which further promotes an interdependent relationship.
Entry #2
After going over Chapter 8 of the course material, I feel as though there are aspects of the chapter that all university students can relate to. Motivations of self-enhancement/self-esteem can be difficult when first entering university, as you are entering a new stage in your life in which you have not adjusted yet. In my case, I feel like once I first came to Stfx my self-esteem was altered, and it took time to feel comfortable here. Even when looking at the "Making Choices" section of the chapter, discussing how it can be detrimental to have a lot of choices to be made. When you are first in University, choices of where to stay, who to hang around, and whether to go out, can put a lot of mental stress on you and can be detrimental to academic success. Lastly, something I related to within my university experience is Learned Helplessness. It can be hard to say no to events you are not used to when first entering university, and you may want to go along with it to try fitting in.
Entry #3
When looking at Chapter 11, I believe I have high relational mobility in my life. The opportunity to attend university has created many opportunities for me to form new relationships over the last few years. I also feel as though since attending university, I have become subject to the Propinquity effect, which describes one becoming friends with people they are around often. Being in such a small town, you get to know a lot of the people you surround yourself with, making it easier to make new friends. Through childhood and adolescence, I found it easy to introduce myself to new people, and once I started at Stfx I found it challenging to do so, however over time it became easier. This experience in much different than being from my hometown in Dartmouth, in which I feel as though I am always seeing new people. This distinction is unique to Stfx, and I believe this can be seen as a selling point to incoming students.
Entry #4
I thought the discussion of secularization in Chapter 12 was very interesting. As someone who was forced to go to church every Sunday my whole childhood, my attendance declined to only going once or twice a year once I was a loud to make that decision myself. This is a topic of discussion that needs to be met with sensitivity, however, in my own case I have used what I consider rational reasoning to come to decisions in my own life. However, I believe there are certain aspects of the religion I was raised to follow that still affect my life today and the moral obligations that arise from following this religion. However, when looking at the aspect of Christianity that claims we are more likely to feel that someone has control over our thoughts is not something I attest to. I believe I have total control over my actions and thoughts and am ready for whatever consequences that might arise from these.

Blog Post #6
When I came to StFX in first year, I did not know anybody. Throughout the first week of school, I was surrounded by the people in my residence and more specifically, those that lived in the same hallway as me. Over the next few months, these became the people I saw and spent the most time with since Covid had strict rules of going into the other residences. Now, as a fourth-year student, my friend group is still the same people that lived in my hallway and who I met and lived so close to me. This connects to the propinquity effect. This effect is people are more likely to become friends with those whom they interact with frequently. Through this effect, it highlights how surprisingly powerful proximity is, and the large influence it has on bringing people together. Due to living near the same people for a whole year, I interacted with them on a daily basis and was a lot more likely to become friends with these people. This also reminds me of a study related to the propinquity effect. Which was that people in the police academy who sat next to each other were still friends much later on because they were constantly interacting with each other. This is similar to my situation of being neighbours with the people on my floor and still being friends with them years later.

Blog Post #2
Globalization is something I notice more and more the more I learn about it. As I walk through my daily life, I notice certain things that are not 'Canadian' in a sense, or that came from different places to end up here. The StFX campus has several churches, one of which is for practicing Muslims; a place that likely would not have existed here if not for globalization. I talk to International students from India, Syria, Germany, etc., and even students who have lived in Canada all of their lives, but their families immigrated here in the past. Years ago, before I took any classes having to do with culture or learned about the issue of WEIRD, I would have had a different reaction to seeing all of this, which would be that of my parent's reaction -- wondering why so many different cultures and ethnicities are around, yet we only hear about our own? Since learning about WEIRD, how most research is done through a Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic lens, it has come to make more sense. I am very active on social media and interact with people from all around the world where they are not living in Canada and thus are in entirely different cultural environments, like a friend from the United Kingdom who talks about eating foods that sound disgusting to me, or a friend in France who talks about standing up when a teacher walks into the classroom out of respect, a practice which I have never seen observed here in Canada and makes no sense to me. In these ways I can tell that I have a bias of my own culture, that I believe something that is different; but not harmful; is 'wrong'. This is a practice I, and everybody on Earth, need to work on changing.

Yes, even in Canada folks need to turn to Gofundme to get necessary medical care. Please consider helping Andrew out. Every little bit helps.
My name is Andrew Jantzen and I’m reaching out for help with a life-changing surgery that I NEED to get within a year.
I’ve been diagnosed with Tethered cord by a neurosurgeon in the US and told I need a $65,000 surgery within a year.
If done within that time frame, it could allow me to walk again without a wheelchair, pee without a catheter, and have my bowels work properly for the first time in years.
If I don’t have the surgery soon enough, these symptoms will become permanent and continue to get worse.
I am a 35-year-old, queer, trans, Mennonite, low-income disabled person. I have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, use a power wheelchair, and have a feeding tube. I have been involved in community in Nova Scotia for 17 years. From XPride at StFX to the Social Justice Youth Camp at the Tatamagouche Centre, from running youth programs in Halifax to volunteering to develop accessibility standards for the province. I now do most of my work and volunteering from home, due to disability and health issues. I have worked for the Tetra Society of North America since 2019, a National charity that collaborates with people with disabilities to build custom assistive devices for people when nothing else exists. I also recently started working part-time for the Nova Scotia Accessibility Directorate where I build capacity to do accessibility work across the province. Despite having two jobs, my income is limited. This is because the Disability Support Program, which I rely on to pay for my support workers and medical needs, claws back nearly 75% of people's income and caps out well below the poverty line.
Where the other condition I live with, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, has no cure, tethered cord can be treated with surgery. I will still have medical issues, but imagine what I would be capable of if this serious condition was treated!
The healthcare system here in Nova Scotia will only cover the cost of out-of-country surgery if I get a diagnosis and referral from a NS neurosurgeon.
Unfortunately, the neurosurgeon I saw in NS, Dr. McNeely, does not support the expert diagnosis of Dr. Klinge, who diagnosed me in the US. Dr McNeely doesn't see anything on my MRI and therefore has concluded that it is simply mechanical back pain. Dr. Klinge is an expert in reading MRIs for people with Tethered cord and EDS, where the signs of tethered cord can be more subtle. She has unequivocally diagnosed me with Tethered cord and has recommended surgery within a year.
Sadly, this experience of being dismissed is the same as the others I know with Tethered cord in Nova Scotia. These other people went on to have surgery with Dr. Klinge, who confirmed during surgery that they did have tethered cord.
Our healthcare system has failed me drastically already. The MRI that the specialist in the US used to diagnose me in March 2023 was from 2017, before I even needed a wheelchair. No one in NS, out of all the specialists I’ve seen, identified the issue back when it could have prevented so much pain, damage, and costs. Everyone said nothing was there. They are still saying there is nothing there.
The only way it seems I will receive this life-altering treatment is if I can raise the funds. That’s why I’m asking for your help today.

Blog Post #8
Talking about the health and well-being unit, we discussed stress, and how socioeconomic status and health are closely linked to it. There are a few explanations for this. The first one being that stress leads people to engage in unhealthy behaviours. The second one being that stress tends to weaken our immune system, which we know is true. An example that we saw in class is that being in New York City has been shown to make people feel more stressed than being somewhere else. I can definitely see how this is true because New York is a large place with constant noise and there are always things going on. Being in that large of an environment can be extremely overwhelming for a lot of people. I for sure would be crazy overwhelmed if I went there.
Going back to the first explanation of stress being linked to SES and health, I think this is a very true statement that does not get talked about enough. The first unhealthy behaviour I think of with this topic is smoking. We see this trend most of the time among young adults and it is much more common than some think. Most teenagers pick up these habits to be “cool”, but others develop the habit of doing it whenever they are stressed as a coping strategy. I will admit I am guilty, but after quitting, I feel so much more confident battling my stress with healthy mechanisms now, such as going on a walk, or doing a little bit of yoga. My first year here at STFX was definitely the worst year for my vaping habit. First year put a lot of stress on me not only physically, but also mentally and emotionally. This was prime covid times and coming from New Brunswick, the borders were constantly opening and closing, so not being able to go home if I had to was super stressful. I had been vaping for a while before that but my first year was probably the worst it's ever been.
The second explanation is that stress really weakens your immune system, which is also very true. People who get stressed more easily or more frequently, also tend to get sicker more often than other people. We see this trend quite often in universities as most students get sick fairly close to exam time, which is just so convenient! We can also see it pretty often around midterm season as well. Some will say “oh it’s just that time of the year”, when in reality it’s our immune system slowly getting weaker with the more stress that all of these tests and assignments bring us.

Blog Post #1
My beliefs and values while growing up were taught to me through my parents, but also taught to me through experience and growing up around majority of the people in my life and community having the same sets of beliefs and values. This is because of my culture. I have shared context with the “group” of people in my culture from a geographical and historical standpoint. Since I am from a small town, there is a lot of generations and history that reside there, and we have been exposed to these same cultural ideas.  In terms of thoughts/beliefs on marriage and child-rearing, it followed a Catholic viewpoint. Marriage and having children were expected around a certain age. This was not personally heavily pushed on me, but the small, predominately white, Catholic town I grew up in instilled these values and beliefs in me without me even fully realizing it until I was older. I feel that moving away for university to a different province allowed me to be exposed to much more diversity and sets of beliefs to learn from. Even though StFX is not a large community or overly diverse, it still allowed me to grow as a person and set my own beliefs and values about what I wanted my ideas surrounding marriage and child-rearing to be like. StFX is a small school and community, and although I have met people from different countries and cultural backgrounds, I see how WEIRD population makes up most of student body. Meaning that most students are from a western, industrialized society.
These are two levels where I have been exposed to systems of beliefs and values. I feel that moving forward after my degree at StFX, I will continue to live in different, bigger cities where I will be exposed to different beliefs and values then what I have known growing up. I believe that this will be educational and beneficial to learn from, as only thinking in one specific way and not branching out to learn about other cultures value systems could become ethnocentric, which is a viewpoint I don’t want to be seeing and thinking from. I want to be open to the various cultures and ways of thinking so that I can establish my own systems of values and beliefs that have not been swayed by the majority community beliefs in my family and hometown.
