HINSDALE, N.H. (AP) — Geoffrey Holt was unassuming as the caretaker of a mobile home park in Hinsdale, New Hampshire, where he lived a simple, but curious life.
Residents would see Holt around town in threadbare clothes — riding his lawn mower, headed to the convenience store, parked along the main road reading a newspaper or watching cars pass.
He did odd jobs for others but rarely left town. Despite having taught driver’s ed to high schoolers, Holt had given up driving a car.
He opted for a bicycle instead and finally the mower.
His mobile home in the park was mostly empty of furniture — no TV and no computer, either. The legs of the bed went through the floor.
“He seemed to have what he wanted, but he didn’t want much,” said Edwin “Smokey” Smith, Holt’s best friend and former employer.
But Holt died earlier this year with a secret: He was a multimillionaire.
And what’s more, he gave it all away to this community of 4,200 people.
His will had brief instructions: $3.8 million to the town of Hinsdale to benefit the community in the areas of education, health, recreation and culture.
Tumblr media
“I don’t think anyone had any idea that he was that successful,” said Steve Diorio, chairperson of the town selectboard who’d occasionally wave at Holt from his car.
“I know he didn’t have a whole lot of family, but nonetheless, to leave it to the town where he lived in ... It’s a tremendous gift.”
The money could go far in this Connecticut River town sandwiched between Vermont and Massachusetts with abundant hiking and fishing opportunities and small businesses.
It’s named for Ebenezer Hinsdale, an officer in the French and Indian Wars who built a fort and a grist mill.
In addition to Hinsdale’s house, built in 1759, the town has the nation’s oldest continually operating post office, dating back to 1816.
Tumblr media
There’s been no formal gathering to discuss ideas for the money since local officials were notified in September.
Some residents have proposed upgrading the town hall clock, restoring buildings, maybe buying a new ballot counting machine in honor of Holt, who always made sure he voted.
Another possibility is setting up an online drivers’ education course.
Organizations would be be able to apply for grants via a trust through the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, drawing from the interest, roughly about $150,000 annually.
"Hinsdale will utilize the money left very frugally as Mr. Holt did,” said Kathryn Lynch, town administrator.
Tumblr media
Holt’s best friend Smith, a former state legislator who became the executor of Holt’s estate, had learned about his fortune in recent years.
He knew Holt, who died in June at age 82, had varied interests, like collecting hundreds of model cars and train sets that filled his rooms, covered the couch and extended into a shed.
He also collected books about history, with Henry Ford and World War II among his favorite topics.
Holt had an extensive record collection too, including Handel and Mozart.
Smith also knew that Holt, who earlier in life had worked as a production manager at a grain mill that closed in nearby Brattleboro, Vermont, invested his money.
Holt would find a quiet place to sit near a brook and study financial publications.
Tumblr media
Holt confided to Smith that his investments were doing better than he had ever expected and wasn’t sure what to to do with the money. Smith suggested that he remember the town.
“I was sort of dumbfounded when I found out that all of it went to the town,” he said.
One of Holt’s first investments into a mutual fund was in communications, Smith said. That was before cellphones.
Holt’s sister, 81-year-old Alison Holt of Laguna Woods, California, said she knew her brother invested and remembered that not wasting money and investing were important to their father.
“Geoffrey had a learning disability. He had dyslexia,” she said.
“He was very smart in certain ways. When it came to writing or spelling, he was a lost cause. And my father was a professor.
So, I think that Geoff felt like he was disappointing my dad. But maybe socking away all that money was a way to compete.”
She and her brother grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts. Their father, Lee Holt, taught English and world literature at American International College.
Their mother, Margaret Holt, had a Shakespearean scholar for a dad.
She was an artist who “absorbed the values of the Quaker Society of Friends,” according to her obituary.
Both parents were peace activists who eventually moved to Amherst and took part in a weekly town vigil that addressed local to global peace and justice issues.
Their children were well-educated. Geoffrey went to boarding schools and attended the former Marlboro College in Vermont, where students had self-designed degree plans.
He graduated in 1963 and served in the U.S. Navy before earning a master’s degree from the college where his father taught in 1968.
In addition to driver’s ed, he briefly taught social studies at Thayer High School in Winchester, New Hampshire, before getting his job at the mill.
Alison remembers their father reading Russian novels to them at bedtime.
Geoffrey could remember all those long names of multiple characters.
He seemed to borrow a page from his own upbringing, which was strict and frugal, according to his sister, a retired librarian.
His parents had a vegetable garden, kept the thermostat low, and accepted donated clothes for their children from a friend.
She said Geoffrey didn’t need a lot to be happy, didn’t want to draw attention to himself, and might have been afraid of moving.
He once declined a promotion at the mill that would have required him to relocate.
“He always told me that his main goal in life was to make sure that nobody noticed anything,” she said, adding that he’d say “or you might get into trouble.”
They didn’t talk much about money, though he would ask her often if she needed anything.
“I just feel so sad that he didn’t indulge himself just a little bit,” she said.
But he never seemed to complain. He also always wasn’t on his own, either.
As a young man, he was briefly married and divorced.
Years later, he grew close to a woman at the mobile home park and moved in with her. She died in 2017.
Neither Alison nor Geoffrey had any children.
Holt suffered a stroke a couple of years ago and worked with therapist Jim Ferry, who described him as thoughtful, intellectual and genteel, but not comfortable with following the academic route that family members took.
Holt had developed mobility issues following his stroke and missed riding his mower.
Tumblr media
“I think for Geoff, lawn mowing was relaxation, it was a way for him to kind of connect with the outdoors,” Ferry said.
“I think he saw it as service to people that he cared about, which were the people in the trailer park that I think he really liked because they were not fancy people.”
Residents are hoping Hinsdale will get noticed a bit more because of the gift.
“It’s actually a forgotten corner in New Hampshire,” said Ann Diorio, who’s married to Steve Diorio and is on the local planning board. “So maybe this will put it on the map a little bit.”

On this date in music history…
April 3rd
2007 - Keith Richards
Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards denied that he snorted the ashes of his late father. Jane Rose, Richards' manager, told MTV News the remarks were made ‘in jest’, and she could not believe they had been taken seriously. Richards had said in an interview with the NME: ‘He was cremated and I couldn't resist grinding him up with a little bit of blow.’ But NME interviewer Mark Beaumont was convinced that Richards was not joking when speaking to him about the alleged incident. ‘He did seem to be quite honest about it. There were too many details for him to be making it up,’ he later told BBC news.
1983 - U2
After completing a 29-date UK tour, U2 appeared on BBC TV Top Of The Pops performing their latest single 'Two Hearts Beat As One'.
1975 - Steve Miller
Steve Miller was charged with setting fire to the clothes of a friend, Benita Diorio. When police arrived at Miller's house, Diorio was putting out the flames, Miller then got into a fight with some of the policemen and was charged with resisting arrest.
1971 - Temptations
The Temptations scored their second US No.1 with 'Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)'. The track is considered one of the Temptations' signature songs, and is notable for recalling the sound of the group's 1960s recordings. It is also the final Temptations single to feature founding members Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams.
1969 - The Doors
The Doors' Jim Morrison turned himself in to the FBI in Los Angeles. He was charged on six charges of lewd behavior and public exposure at a concert in Miami on March 2nd, 1969. He was later released on $2000 bail.
1967 - The Beatles
Working on The Beatles Sgt. Pepper album at Abbey Road studios in London, George Harrison recorded his lead vocal on his song 'Within You Without You' as well as a sitar part, and some acoustic guitar parts.
1964 - Bob Dylan
Bob Dylan made his first appearance on the UK charts with 'The Times They Are A-Changin''. Dylan wrote the song as a deliberate attempt to create an anthem of change for the time. In January 1984, a young Steve Jobs recited the second verse of 'The Times They Are a-Changin'' in his opening of the 1984 Apple shareholders meeting, where he famously unveiled the Macintosh computer for the first time.
1961 - The Marcels
The Marcels started a three week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with the Rodgers and Heart song 'Blue Moon', also a No.1 in the UK.
1956 - Elvis Presley
Elvis Presley appeared on ABC-TV's 'The Milton Berle Show' live from the flight deck of the USS Hancock in San Diego, California. He performed 'Heartbreak Hotel' 'Shake Rattle And Roll' and 'Blue Suede Shoes.' It was estimated that one out of every four Americans saw the show.

Ira Sullivan
"The land of the living was not far removed from the land of the ancestors. There was coming and going between them, especially at festivals and also when an old man died, because an old man was very close to the ancestors. A man's life from birth to  death was a series of transition rites which brought him nearer and nearer to his ancestors." Chinua Echebe
I met and heard Ira Sullivan when I was a teenager. A local business man, Steve Patton brought him to my hometown. In 50's Chicago, Steve partnered with Joe Segal to promote shows. Ira, one of their local stars. Twenty years later, in his toasty living room, aided by his LPs, Steve educated me on Ira's precipitous Chi-town rise and permanent Florida detour.
For East Coast visits, Steve built bands from a short list of stars: Reuben Brown-piano, Joe Diorio-guitar, Rufus Reid or Michael Formanek-bass, Billy Hart or Steve Bagby-drums. When the first gig happened, Steve called my dad to make sure I'd be there. I can't recall the first tune or set I heard Ira play, but from then on he added my own tenor to his lineup of brass and woodwinds. My horn remembers that.
Ira was a stream-of-consciousness bandleader. While the other cats burned and churned, he stood stage left with an instrument, warming it with breath, testing his embouchure and shouting encouragement. Back at the mic, the next tune appeared headlong-a radically different tempo, a soulful chunk of melody or cascades of bebop elegance. With Ira's magnetic ears and catholic tastes, his choices and segues sometimes surprised and flummoxed harmonic players. Eventually someone made it work, though. His set always ended on alto flute and a long vamp surrounding "Amazing Grace". Ira's faith didn't make his playing sanctimonious or chasten his jazz musician argot. It did seem to keep him forever grateful for the life he had been given and music he shared.
I got to chauffer Ira a bit and have meals with him. I always brought a horn, in case we could play on downtime. He once asked me what I was learning. I told him, 'Infant Eyes". He gasped, "That's  Wayne's tune! So beautiful. Let's play it" He tilted his alto toward my tenor. "What note do you start on?" I told him. "Go ahead, man" he said, closing his eyes. As I played, he accompanied me with counterpoint, both simple and elaborate. I found I didn't know the music well enough to keep my place and listen to him and finally stopped, defeated. "You sound great. I haven't heard you in long time. Man, you're just getting better and better."
This was his teaching: dig deep into the music together, spread love, acceptance and encouragement. Onstage, Ira always invited young folk to stand next to him. He beamed at all of us while we played, never cutting us off (even when it would have been merciful), keeping us ever-involved playing backgrounds or trading with him.
I believe I remember everything he ever said to or around me. Heros make us both truly humble and falsely confident. Our small bodies spun wide by their powerful gravity.
What I still aspire to is what I always witnessed from him: the highest standards of skill, a loving, accepting attitude, hunger for life on and off the bandstand. Mac Olsen, an old and dear friend of Ira's told me of a hang so extended they returned to diner multiple times over a weekend. When the wee-hour waitress saw Ira, she cracked, "YOU, AGAIN?"

Band Camp
May 30, 2017
After spending a lifetime around Rock and Roll, I finally decided to do something about it.
First some background.   I am in my late 50’s (OK almost 60), married for over 30 years, and the Father of two daughters.  I have lived in Northern Virginia outside Washington, DC since 1980 and am immersed in a variety of activities; I play golf at a local Country Club, have been involved in Competitive Swimming as an Official for nearly 20 years, still play pick-up ice hockey, and I’ve had my Pilot’s License since 1985.  I have no shortage of things to do.
As a kid, I played the piano and clarinet in grade school before graduating to the acoustic Guitar.  I played in Church through High School, but not much else.  In College at Colgate University, I gravitated to the Campus Radio Station, WRCU-FM.  I was a DJ and play-by-play man for both Hockey and Football.  After graduation, I came to the DC area to work as a DJ for a variety of AM and FM stations, including WFMD in Frederick, MD, WXTR-FM (”Extra 104″) and WMZQ-FM.  After getting the radio bug out of my system, I entered the Commercial Real Estate field where I’ve worked for over 30 years.
I’m the oldest of 5 kids, 4 boys and my “8 year-old Sister” who will turn 50 this year.  My Mom was a pretty good piano player and the likely source of any musical talent in the Family.  As kids, my Brothers were the musicians.  All three played in bands in High School and/or College and continue to play.  I made many road trips to Boston when I was in school to see their bands play at a variety of Clubs.  My youngest brothers, Chris and Jim, were drummers in Rods & Cones, which had a modicum of success in Boston and the Northeast during the early 80’s.  My other brother, Steve, played with a few groups while he was in College (part of the time with Chris), and even traveled up to Colgate in Upstate New York to play a couple of gigs at my fraternity.  These guys can play.  They spent the time during High School practicing and working on their craft.  I was too busy playing hockey and doing other extra-curricular stuff.  My sister was a pretty good singer and played the piano for a while as well.
Fast-forward twenty years or so, and I found myself thinking, “If only I had stuck with those piano/clarinet/guitar lessons, maybe I could play like my Brothers.”  Not too long after that my wife Kim surprised me with a Christmas gift of a new acoustic guitar and surprisingly it came back to me pretty quickly.  It just also happened that we ‘inherited’ an old spinet piano from my in-laws.  We wanted our daughters to take lessons; a side benefit was that I was able to fool around on the piano as well.  I didn’t take any lessons so the progress was slow, but I started to be able to play a few tunes.
At my 25th Colgate Reunion in 2005, some Classmates reconstituted their Band, 151, as our entertainment for the weekend.  As I mentioned to several people, the highlight of the weekend was Campus Security literally pulling the plug on them at 2:15 Sunday morning during the crescendo of ‘Freebird’.  As we lingered in the tents until nearly sunrise,  I told myself that I really wanted to be able to share that experience.  Five years later, I got the chance to fill in when 151’s regular keyboard player, Mark DiOrio, was unable to attend.  While a bit shaky, I managed to pull off playing bit bit less than half of the tunes.  I earned some kudos for handling the organ intro to ‘Freebird’ and was invited to join the Band as we accepted applause and a small gift at the Class Dinner on Saturday night.  Even though Mark returned for our 35th Reunion in 2015, I was able to participate, playing on over half of the songs as second keyboard/organ and adding background vocals.  I even sang lead on ‘Sweet Home Alabama’.  It was a blast.
Bolstered by my relative success at our 35th, I finally got up the nerve to revisit my woodwind background and took saxophone lessons for nearly a year.  I have acquired both an alto and a tenor horn, and continue to work on my sax skills.   Its been fun to explore another instrument.
About a year ago, I started discussing forming a Band with two guys from  my Country Club.  I know, not the place where you’d expect to make a rock ‘n roll connection, but Rob Francis, Chris Brown and I decided to give it a try.  After kicking it around for a while, in October of 2016 we committed to renting a rehearsal space every Sunday from 4 to 7 pm.  We recruited another guy from the Club, Jay Hawkins, as an additional guitar player.  Mark Leheney, a long-time friend/neighbor of mine joined as our drummer.  The final piece of the puzzle was the addition of Chris’s former band mate, Steve Harmon, as our lead singer.
Not long after we started rehearsing, a mutual friend from the Club approached Rob and Chris to see if we could play at his wife’s 50th birthday, an outdoor ‘gig’ at his home in late April.  After lots of discussion regarding potential police visits and knowing that the audience would be lots of friends, we elected to move forward.  One problem, we still didn’t have a name for our Band.  After a spirited debate, we settled on the name of ‘No One You Know’.
Next we had to come up with a set list, which wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be.  Within a week or so we had 25 songs that we were comfortable performing.  7 weeks of intense practice paid off, and our first public appearance was a success.  Of course there were mistakes and things we wanted to correct, but overall we were happy with the result.
Going forward, we are hoping to play every 6 to 8 weeks at some of the local establishments here in Arlington.  We’ve decided that our focus for events will be on charity, with all net proceeds going to an organization that could use our support.  In the interim, we are doing a Block Party for another friend this Saturday (weather permitting).  I’ll have more to add after the weekend.
All in all, its been a great experience that I look forward to sharing with you via Tumblr.

A MUST BUY FOR EXECUTIVES Steve Diorio has written a meaty and relevant book about selling technologies. In an age when there is so much E hype and fluff that only serves to confuse, we needed a book that was born from practical, everyday consulting and research in the offices of the best companies. The salient ideas about which Mr. Diorio expounds are absolutely critical for growth and profit. They carry with them an imperative that to ignore the protocols of this newest e technology will lead to peril and a fatal falling behind the power curve. Go to Amazon
FINALLY... someone with substance! Finally a book that doesn't force-feed you candy-coated customer experience stories that are interesting but don't tell us anything we do not already know. Go to Amazon
A marketing book of real substance Having taught a variety of marketing courses at the undergraduate, graduate and executive levels, I am always looking for books that present the ways in which new technology (and the Internet in particular) are affecting market relationships. Often these texts are full of exaggerrated "war stories" or can be easily summarized into a few general points. Steve Diorio's book, in contrast, is current, meaty and well substantiated. He not only provides several examples of recent successes and failures but synthesizes this new information into the age old framework of serving the customer and firm by adding value to both. I highly recommend this book to any marketing professional as well as any professor who wishes to bring their marketing strategy or course content into the 21st century. Go to Amazon
A Must Read I just finished an advance copy of Beyond E that a colleague passed on to me. This is one of the better sales and marketing strategy books I've read. I highly recommend Beyond E to any executive who is interested in using new technologies and strategies ( sales force automation, CRM, interactive direct marketing, etc.) to create a cutting edge sales and marketing department. The author is clearly in the forefront of thinking on sales and marketing strategy. My one warning--though it's not a complaint--is that this isn't a quick read. The author provides a tremendous amount of detail and thoughtful case studies that take some time to get through. Go to Amazon
Beyond E is a home run Steve Diorio has given form to and captured the elusive ingredients that so many of us have missed as we have poured money and effort into our internet sales strategies only to be rewarded with an empty feeling and an ache to know where we have gone wrong. Go to Amazon
A Book That Actually Helps In an ocean of business books, Beyond e stands out as a prize catch. Too often, today's "gurus" write books that trumpet their personal accomplishments conveniently leaving out practical applications to specific business category needs. If we want real solutions, the cost raises from a $25 book to $25,000 per day consultation fee. Steve Diorio gives it all away in his book. Beyond e can also be called beyond best practices. He is the one guru I would invite to help my organization apply new technologies to our sales and marketing efforts. Read the book, pick up the phone and give him a call. Go to Amazon
Beyond e...goes beyond the e hype A Must Read!

In September of 2016, the Jaxx development team and the company’s CEO Anthony Diorio had been requested by using Apple to do away with a privateness-targeted cryptocurrency known as Dash from its iOS utility. The removal of Dash consequently reduced the financial privateness of Jaxx customers on iOS.

Apple Better Hurry Up On The Holographic Handset Or Have A Horrible And Horrendous Death
Right here we are again looking forward to the next release of the Apple iPhone as we have 10-instances before, this time we are on iPhone eight, and parents are questioning what incremental era it’d have attractive us to improve our maximum valued non-public tech device. Properly, the rumors have it that this next model will have greater FRT or Facial Reputation era – allowing it to fasten or free up your cell phone clearly by way of recognizing your face – the last safety. Or, is it? Maybe this takes your non-public privateness down a notch? Assume on that for a minute.
In the meantime, I would want to address an extra serious difficulty
And this is it’s been 10-years because of the first iPhone, according to Google Search: On January 9, 2007, Steve Jobs announced the iPhone at the Macworld convention, receiving good sized media attention. Jobs introduced that the primary iPhone could be launched later that 12 months. On June 29, 2007, the first iPhone was released.
Seeing that then, all we’ve got gotten have been incremental gains, smaller, sleeker, bigger, better, faster, greater memory, longer battery life, and so forth.? Of route, the changes in the starting had been extra top notch than those of recent years, I trust that is due to the fact Steve Jobs demanded it. So, allow me to ask; wherein is the Holographic iPhone – able to task, and scan and report 3-D objects? Steve could have brought it with the aid of now, however, Captain Tim Cook isn’t any pirate like Jobs.
Possibly to answer this query you would possibly need to examine up on
Innovation philosophy and the history of Silicon Valley. Thus, I suggest reading “The Intel Trinity” by using Michael S. Malone former reporter for the Mercury News in Silicon Valley. There may be additionally a nice YouTube video lecture by means of Malone, and numerous interviews.
Additionally, there has been a thrilling article in the Singularity Institute on-line News on February 14, 2017, titled; “Holograms Aren’t The Stuff of Science Fiction Anymore,” by way of Peter Rejcek which stated:

Is The Big Bang Theory Legitimate
What do simply clever people like to do? Nicely, they love to do concept experiments and feature highbrow discourse approximately fascinating theories. Nothing can be greater exciting than topics of the Universe and its vastness – and the biggest theory of all is the path; The Big Bang. And, sure, these types of dialogues do arise early and frequently at our assume tank. So, let’s speak we could?
In college, we’re instructed that the universe commenced off with a Large bang. Sounds high-quality and so we are told to memorize this idea and its miles defined to us in easy terms. It is now not hard to convince anybody that coaching this principle is right because it suggests a “high mover” or god, or some movement taking the region, so it keeps all of us glad – medical minds, atheists and nonsecular oldsters alike. Nevertheless, does it genuinely make any experience? Properly now not to me – why you ask?
The Massive Bang does no longer make the experience to
I and I doubt it is a possible concept, however, a great try to knowledgeable wager. For if “Nothing is anything, then How Can Something be Whatever?” If there has been a Huge Bang, there can best be one, due to the fact if it expands then it may also contract, if it contracts it can not become infinitely small because it would fall into itself inflicting masses of collisions and as a result like a strip of firecrackers expand lower back outward, possibly it’d reach equilibrium, but if so, then what? Is that Not anything? Seeing that non-issue or Nothing is “anywhere” then it is a part of the machine and for that reason, not Not anything in spite of everything.
One can call it what they may “Darkish Strength, Dark Matter” something you desire, however, the Dark most effective method we do not know, it would not imply “IT” would not exist, there is Something there, and It’s Not anything, Nothing can be nowhere, when you examine it, you provide it Power, hence it’s miles Something, if you consider it, give it a name, “it’s far” therefore it exists.
The idea of the Massive Bang is absolutely interesting, however, seems unviable to me. Since I don’t know, the bigger query could be, “If there was a Large bang, and I am now not high-quality there has been,
