The Kellynch Hall Yearbook: Volume XIII

I think Sally has good reason to fear that Louie could be losing interest in their relationship - they're out on a date with...
Tumblr media
Joanna. The pair met at a recent party, and Louie (with their penchant for brunettes) was quick to snatch the opportunity to get to know the quiet but intriguing Joanna better.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Despite her usual reserve, Joanna is utterly charmed by the smooth-talking Louie.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's an unseasonably mild night, so the pair opt for an intimate dinner at an outside table.
Tumblr media
My favourite restaurant host - Susie Willis - is of course in attendance.
Tumblr media
It was a lovely evening, and the next day Louie can't help preening a little, while Sally can only be left wondering what has put them in such a good mood. William is just completely Zenned out on the cafeteria floor, with his morning coffee.
Tumblr media
Party time again.
Tumblr media
Interspersed with some inevitable class attendance.

As everyone approaches the end of their second year at DBU, it comes as no surprise when Erasmus offers Edward his heart, forever (or at least until he dies, and his atoms return to the universe), and a very shiny ring - and that Edward doesn't hesitate to say yes!

WICKED LITTLE LETTERS (2023)
Starring Olivia Colman, Jessie Buckley, Anjana Vasan, Joanna Scanlan, Gemma Jones, Malachi Kirby, Lolly Adefope, Eileen Atkins, Timothy Spall, Alisha Weir, Paul Chahidi, Hugh Skinner, Richard Goulding, Tim Key, Jason Watkins, Krishni Patel, Nikita Elle Jakobsen, Adam Treasure, Susie Fairfax, Jamie Chapman, Vinodini Patel, Amy Lee Ronaldson and Grant Crookes.
Screenplay by Jonny Sweet.
Directed by Thea Sharrock.
Distributed by Sony Pictures Classics. 100 minutes. Rated R.
There can be something wonderfully freeing about the use of profanity, particularly for someone who is caught in a repressive lifestyle. However, there is a cost in completely letting loose as well.
That is the moral behind this slight-but-amusing “based on a true story” British period piece.
Perhaps the most shocking part of Wicked Little Letters is that it was ever shocking. Of course, the world of small-town England about a hundred years ago is long gone. It’s interesting to look at what happened through a post-Twitter lens. Which is probably why this story of a serial poison pen letter writer in the quaint little village Littlehampton, England is portrayed somewhat comically, almost as a bit of a farce, even though at the time it was highly scandalous.
Olivia Colman plays Edith Swan, a highly repressed and highly religious spinster living in a small house with her domineering father and her proper, subdued mother. Edith’s life is a dull affair – she goes to church, spends time with some of the local women in things like sewing circles and playing card games, and spends much of her time passive-aggressively looking down on other people.
Suddenly, she starts receiving the foulest anonymous letters in the mail. Eventually, the letter writer spreads out and starts to send correspondence to other villagers, but Edith remains the main target of the profanity-strewn screeds.
Immediately suspected is her next-door neighbor, Rose (Jesse Buckley), an Irish immigrant, a widowed mother and a woman of somewhat loose morals for the time. (She works at a bar and is living with a Black man. And she is known to have a very salty vocabulary.)
Little things stood out to make Rose’s involvement in these letters a bit suspicious. The writer was obviously not really fluent in profanity – although filled with curse words and sexual innuendo, the insults really made no sense and the curses were usually used incorrectly, almost like someone was doing a Mad Libs book in which each blank space read “insert curse word here.”
Also noticed, but mostly ignored, was the fact that the handwriting on the letters was obviously different than Rose’s.
Still, the police are determined to blame Rose, even though the head constable acknowledges that from early on they did suspect someone else. However, it would keep up appearances to blame Rose, so she is jailed and put on trial.
Her case is taken on by Gladys Moss, the first woman police officer in the town. (In fact, every time she tells people she was a gendarme, she has to specify “woman” police officer.) She is also not taken seriously by the men in her station, who just expect her to write tickets and get them coffee.
Gladys and some of the women of the town feel that someone else is sending the letters, and they get together covertly to prove it.
Of course, the audience is clued in to the identity of the letter writer relatively early in the movie. (As a viewer, if you haven’t figured out who wrote the letters from the very beginning of the film, you’re not really trying.)
The rest of the film is an odd, but mostly funny, mixture of Monty Python’s Flying Circus and Law & Order: Victorian Unit.
Wicked Little Letters won’t win any awards or change anyone’s life, but it’s an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon.

Susie Coleman from Wit (2001)
Tumblr media
My character is a nurse named Susie from the movie “Wit”. I am charged with the care of a woman who has a untreatable case of ovarian cancer and have to tell her family that she has ordered a DNR, or “Do Not Resuscitate” order as if her heart stops beating, she does not want to be revived. I chose this character as I aspire to be a nurse practitioner and will have to experience these disheartening challenges.

Jane Metter
123 Love St
Burke, VA 22015
Dear Family and Loved Ones to Ms. Metter,
With this letter, I regretfully enclose the details on your family member’s, Ms. Katherine Metter, wishes for her remaining treatment at Clades Hospital.
I would like to first inform you that the medical team of Clades Hospital has tirelessly exhausted all possible care plans as well as treatments for Katherine. She herself has been strong in her efforts with the multiple chemotherapy sessions, as well as every possible mixture of drug and treatment combination. Though we have been able to severely shrink the tumor in her left ovary, the cancer has began to spread to other places in her body. Upon us informing Ms. Metter on her condition she asked us to give her a DNR, or a “Do Not Resuscitate” order so that when her heart fails, we are legally unable to resuscitate her. She has asked me to write this letter to you to inform of her decision, and wishes for your understanding and support.
If you would like to visit Katherine to discuss this, she is available for visitation during 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. every day.
Thank you for your constant support for Katherine in her fight and your cooperation with the medical care team of Clades Hospital. If you have any questions regarding anything please feel free to contact me at 563-636-5245 or email me at [email protected]. I wish you all well.
Sincerely,                                                                                                         Susie Coleman

Cecily, who are the say, ten closest people to you? Asking for the biographers later in life.
I’m glad you asked, anon, since none of them, God willing, follow this blog.
First I would say my guardian, Jack Worthing. He’s like an uncle to me. A bit controlling, though. Thinks of me as whimsical when I’m simply telling my truth.
Next we have my love, now known as Algernon. We will be married soon and all of my once labeled “fictions” will be reality.
Gwendolen Fairfax was once my enemy, but only on the grounds of a great misunderstanding. We both sought to forgive Ernest and Algernon on account of their adoration.
Lady Bracknell -- boy does this woman bother me. First, she reduces me to a social tool worth only the figure of my inheritance. Then Jack leveraged that to marry Gwen, but the Lady B refused. And people call me dramatic.
Miss Prism is my tutor. She is hapless in love, so i do my very best to help her -- like when I convinced her to take a walk with her ideal Dr. Chasuble. I truly believe that everyone deserves a fantastic love.
Next up are my friends, that coincidentally, only I seem to have met...
Susie and Bobsie are identical twins and my best friends in the world. Once I have established myself as a writer, I will document their adventures in a whimsical children’s series.
Ella and her spaniel Peanut Butter have been my next door neighbors since I was an infant. I never tire of teaching PB new tricks or explaining my extremely complex and dramatic love life to Ella.
Finally, just as I created Susie, Bobsie, Ella, and Peanut Butter, I should mention my creator: Oscar Wilde, who I feel is best embodied in this quote: “I can resist everything except temptation.”

The three defining images from a wonderfully bookish week. I cannot tell you how perfect it is sometimes to be in this bookish world of ours. It has its down moments, doesn’t everything in life, but mostly it is a perfect place to escape to and one which makes me very, very happy. It is fair to say that this week I have been a very lucky and very spoilt book blogger.
It all began on Wednesday, when I booked half a day off work and travelled to London to join Karen Sullivan and Antti Tuomainen for the UK launch of the absolutely hilarious and brilliant The Man Who Died. I love this book, definitely one of my top books for 2017 and if you want to know how much, my review can be found here. I was thrilled to be able to make this event. We were small in number but it was a brilliant night none the less. It also gave me signed book number one of the week.
Arriving home on Thursday gave me my second absolutely bouncy moment of the week. Probably bouncier than Wednesday and I’d consumed a lot of caffeine on Wednesday to keep me going until I got home about 00:30. You see I arrived home to a lovely little package –  a signed copy of Broken Bones by the lovely Angela Marsons. For anyone who managed to miss it (lucky you – believe me) I did a (not so) short video review of Broken Bones for its launch earlier this month, It was my pleasure to do this as I love the Kim Stone series, I just hope it came over how much in the review. If you are daft enough or haven’t suffered enough already, you can find the review here.
And then, as if I hadn’t been spoiled enough this week, Mandie and I took a short drive up North to Hull Noir on Friday. Two days of some very brilliant panels ensued, and it was lovely to be able to catch up with some of the top bloggers around including Susan, Rachel, Anne, Noelle, Sheila, Dave and probably one of the loveliest and most fabulous people I have met, my blogging twin, Abbie Rutherford. We started blogging in pretty much the exact same week and Abbie has been a huge source of inspiration and support to me so I so chuffed we finally got to meet. I can testify she looks nothing like her profile pictures! I also picked up another couple of signed books, this time from Mark Billingham – the first (Sleepyhead) and the most recent books in his Tom Thorne series. I recently reviewed Love Like Blood (here) and had a great compliment off Mark about it, so it was nice to be able to say hello and thank him for it in person. And I have smiley (and not so smiley) faces in my book too 🙂
Panel wise, we took in three panels each day, listening to great talks from a wonderful bunch of Crime Writers on such a diverse range of topics. Far too many highlights to be able to list them all, each panel giving the audience something different. Martina Cole on Saturday was hilarious, as were Mark Billingham and John Connolly closing out the event on Sunday.
From Danielle Ramsay admitting to coming very close to antagonizing a real Whitley Bay gangster, Steph Broadribb admitting to defending a young girl’s honour in a kebab shop, through to Matt Wesolowski, author of possibly one of the most culturally and technologically relevant books of the moment, admitting to hating social media and steering clear of technology, you couldn’t ask for a better couple of days. Well done to all who were involved in arranging the event and thanks to all who took part. It was a bloody brilliant weekend.
Anyway. All this travel really screwed up my reading and book buying plans. Other than the few mentioned above, I only managed to buy a couple of books … The Reunion by Samantha Hayes and Hell To Pay by Rachel Amphlett. Netgalley wise, I just picked up The Silent Children by Carol Wyer and The Cover Up by Marnie Riches.
Reading wise was quite pathetic too. I only managed three. And one of those was a novella!
Books I have read
The Last Post by B.K. Duncan
It is April 1918. May Keaps is a twenty-year-old ambulance driver stationed at The Front. As if transporting hideously wounded soldiers, sleep deprivation and constant shell bombardment weren’t enough, she becomes unwittingly entangled in the untimely death of a young captain, Tobias Fairfax.
Newly-arrived in Northern France he was found with a discharged pistol by his side; rumours on the battlefield were that it wasn’t an accident and he had taken the coward’s way out, committing suicide.
Whatever the explanation, Tobias left a dangerous legacy that puts May in the line of fire. But she is not the only one with a reason to want to uncover the truth. And in a world where life can be extinguished in the blink of an eye, May might regret her search for answers…
The Last Post is the haunting introduction to the May Keaps series.
This was a great little novella, quite a serious subject but a wonderful introduction to May Keaps and I’m looking forward to reading her continued story. I’ll be sharing my review soon and you can pick up a copy for free here.
Now You See Me by Kierney Scott
As she saw his face for the first time, she knew he was going to kill her. She just didn’t know when.
When the dismembered body of Lydia Steiner is found washed up in the waters of a blisteringly hot Louisiana swamp, Detective Jess Bishop knows for certain this isn’t the murderer’s first kill.
Three other dismembered bodies have been found, all bearing the same marks. Marks that strike fear into Jess’s heart. They are identical to those from a case she’s spent her entire career trying to forget.
As Jess and her team try to link the victims, another body is discovered and they fear the serial killer is taunting them. They know it’s only a matter of time before he kills again.
As the body count rises, and the hunt goes cold, Jess knows she has to confront her past in order to catch the killer, even if that means making herself the bait…
Now You See Me is a gripping and heart-stopping thriller full of twists and perfect for fans of Robert Dugoni, Karin Slaughter, Robert Bryndza and Lisa Gardner.
Wow. What an opened to a series. You certainly get to know protagonist Jess Bishop and her partner Jamison pretty well. I’ll be sharing my thoughts as part of the blog blitz next week, but if you’d like to read a very assured debut for what looks set to be a cracking series, you can preorder a copy here.
The Deaths of December by Susi Holliday
The hunt is on for a serial killer in this thrilling festive crime novel
It looks like a regular advent calendar.
Until DC Becky Greene starts opening doors…and discovers a crime scene behind almost every one.
The police hope it’s a prank. Because if it isn’t, a murderer has just surfaced – someone who’s been killing for twenty years.
But why now? And why has he sent it to this police station?
As the country relaxes into festive cheer, Greene and DS Eddie Carmine must race against time to catch the killer. Because there are four doors left, and four murders will fill them…
It’s shaping up to be a deadly little Christmas.
I listened to the audio book of this on the way to Hull and back. If you are looking for the perfect pre-christmas pain killer, something to capture the festive spirit in a completely saccharine free way, then this may be the book for you. I loved it, but then I’m anti-Christmas. I’ll be sharing my thoughts on the book soon in the countdown to December’s First Monday Crime, but you can bag yourself a copy right here.
That was it. A bit pathetic really given I was home for at least a couple of days last week 😉 Blog was busy though with posts all week. This past week marked a whole year of posting every day, apart from Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Quite an achievement I think. Thanks to Mandie for helping with that.

On top of that are some reviews and a little more book love so I hope you can stop by for all of that.
Have a perfectly bookish week all. I’m off to Dublin on Wednesday which means valuable reading time at the airport. Can’t wait.
See you next week
Jen
Rewind, recap: Weekly update w/e 19/11/17 The three defining images from a wonderfully bookish week. I cannot tell you how perfect it is sometimes to be in this bookish world of ours.

#FamousFosters
#FamousFosters are en vogue!
Foster Dogs Inc and Susie’s Senior Dogs have teamed up to create #FamousFosters, a brand new program to place older shelter dogs into the homes of people in the public eye. With each “famous” foster parent, a new audience will be privy to the joys (and yes, sometimes – the challenges) of fostering, seeing the animal go from homeless to adopted! We’ve teamed up with several local rescue organizations and are debuting new #FamousFosters throughout the year, having just had our first success story!
Fostering saves lives! @susiesseniordogs & @fosterdogsnyc are teaming up to connect homeless senior dogs with some awesome humans who can help make a difference. CHARLIE, welcome to the #FamousFosters club! This adorable 7 year old guy just left the city shelter to get some R&R in a foster home! We’re showing the public just how incredible fostering is, and what a difference you can make to a senior shelter dog. Charlie is up for adoption with @shelterchic animal rescue.
Charlie with foster mom Kimiko Glenn
Charlie lived with Kimiko for just under one week, and found a wonderful home after being viewed on Susie’s Senior Dogs. He went from rags to riches in a matter of days!
One week later, Charlie’s new family picked him up. A perfect fit!
With dog rescue becoming chic and trendy nationwide, more animals are getting rescued than ever before. Through the help of innovative programs, no-kill rescue efforts, shelter improvements, positive adoption messaging, and celebrity support, animal rescue is on the rise.
Did you see the amazing story of Ginger the Pit Bull who found a foster home with Sir Patrick Stewart, for ASPCA’s “Get Tough on Dogfighting” campaign? C’mon, how incredible is that?
When a person in the public eye uses their celebrity status to promote a positive message and encourage kindness to others (be it animals or humans), they are making a real difference. In New York City alone, Animal Haven, Best Friends Animal Society, Shelter Chic, Muddy Paws Rescue, among other organizations, have encouraged celebrity involvement in order to promote their lifesaving efforts. Animal Care Centers of NYC have lowered their euthanasia rates from 60% of dogs and cats in 2003, to 13% in 2015 (Source: NYTimes). That’s an incredible difference, partly due to the following factors: more people choosing to adopt, local rescue groups taking shelter dogs into their care, reuniting owners with lost pets, positive and appealing marketing, increased city budget, counseling prior to surrendering a pet, improved shelter facilities, and of course – fostering!
Our first Famous Foster dog is Charlie, a 7 year old Shih Tzu from NYC Animal Care Centers. We placed him with actress Kimiko Glenn (Orange is the New Black, Waitress on Broadway, Broad City), along with her boyfriend, dog, and cat. Shelter Chic’s director Brittany worked quickly with the #FamousFosters team to get Charlie from ACC, who was thrilled to hear he was headed to a fantastic foster placement!
More shelter animals are finding homes every year, and it’s up to all of us to continue spreading the word about pet fostering and adoption. “Each year, approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized (670,000 dogs and 860,000 cats). The number of dogs and cats euthanized in U.S. shelters annually has declined from approximately 2.6 million in 2011. This decline can be partially explained by an increase in the percentage of animals adopted and an increase in the number of stray animals successfully returned to their owners.” (Source: ASPCA, 2017)
Says Tawny Hammond, Director of the Fairfax County Animal Shelter in northern Virginia, “We’ve seen a real revolution in animal sheltering over the past decade, so increasingly people associate their local animal shelter with hope, triumph and second chances, [a]nd that’s made a huge difference.” (Source: Huffington Post).
If we can change minds and reach out to new audiences about the joys of fostering and adoption, particularly of older dogs, we can expand our never-ceasing mission of saving lives.
Want to recommend a #FamousFosters caretaker for this experience? Email info [at] fosterdogsnyc.com. For typical foster placements, we encourage everyone to apply to our Foster Roster, and check out available dogs on fosterdogsnyc.com.
Note regarding #FamousFosters placements: Foster Dogs & Susie’s Senior Dogs will provide foster dog care materials, support with any questions, transportation assistance, and more.

Denise Eileen, beloved by so many, deceased at age 45. She was bright, cheery, optimistic, and unlikely to complain. Beautiful, kind, sweet, and loving. Hers was a life of helping others less fortunate and embracing people on the margins; with her Masters in Social Work from Ohio State University, she worked at Margaret Rost School, Bobby Fairfax School, Council on Aging, Tennessee Early Intervention, and ARC Early Intervention in Pittsburgh. She was witty, wise, smart, funny and full of joy. Her favorite joke was about a mailman, a housewife, and a one dollar tip. She loved her dogs, especially Rex, Momma, Kirby and her cats, especially Willow. Denise loved all things warm...down coats, long underwear, the beach, pets in her bed and the color orange. Denise died after a challenging lifelong acquaintance with kidney disease but was met at the door with an unwelcome but persistent visitor, cancer. She is survived by her husband Mark, her loving father, Louis Lowy, and his dear wife Susie, and brother, David Lowy. She was preceded in death by beloved and treasured mother, Ina Lowy, grandparents Esther and Harold Lowy and Norma and Bernie Garliner. She will be missed by so many dear friends and family. She would tell her husband, Mark, "You're the best man I know." He would reply, "Darling, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder." The world was a beautiful place to our Denise. We love you. Barn's burnt down, now I can see the moon.
