Thena watches her gladiators while they train. And she certainly enjoys watching her champion while he trains 👀
Ajak smiled to one of their many advisors before they bounded off. She turned to Thena beside her, "do you remember a single word they said?"
"Do you?"
"Thena," Ajak frowned, although her daughter was not nearly as chastised by her tone as she might have liked. Thena turned her head faintly, looking out into the courtyard as they walked. "You cannot avoid them forever."
"Forgive me, Mother," Thena smiled tightly. Usually, she did her best to avoid royal duties all together. But she had made her mother the promise that, if she were allowed to stay by Gilgamesh's side while he recovered, that she would never deny her mother again.
A promise she still did not regret making, no matter how many meetings and banquets and diplomatic invitations she had to endure. Gilgamesh was alive and well, and she had kept her promise to her mother since.
"Speak of the devil."
Gilgamesh, former Champion and now Captain of the Guard, was training the new recruits. Newer, younger gladiators who would need to know how to handle themselves in the ring in the name of Queen and Country.
"He is a fine teacher."
Ajak eyed Thena beside her, not that her daughter was paying attention to anything but the man directing their new gladiators. She cleared her throat, "there are questions, my dear--about your marriage?"
"What about it?" Thena mumbled, head practically craned so she could watch Gilgamesh as he gave a lesson on wrestling, seeming about momentum and using an opponent's size against them.
Ajak huffed; Thena had developed somewhat of an impertinence about her since the Eros debacle. Ajak halted her steps, since Thena had come to such a natural halt herself. She tugged at Thena's dress, "about it happening, dearest. You are expected to choose someone now that you have all the power in the world to do so."
Thena continued to ignore her.
Ajak had been trying to get her daughter to consider marriage for years already. She was more than of-age, but the Queen also had vowed to never force Thena into something she truly did not want. And marriage seemed to be at the very top of that list. They were lucky she took the throne and had Thena when she was as young as she was. She had half expected to hand over the throne by now.
Thena tilted her head, admiring the Captain as he...worked.
Ajak sighed, shaking her head faintly. It was so plain to see, and yet Thena had not even mentioned a fondness for the Champion who fought for the freedom of her hand rather than the possession of it. Even Ajak could recognise the romance of such an action.
"You could choose him, if you wish."
Thena finally looked at her, torn from her revelry of watching a bunch of men - one man, rather - horse around. "Hm?"
Driven to distraction; Ajak nodded her head towards Gilgamesh, "I am sure he would find it most agreeable."
"H-" Thena blinked, her head moving between her mother and their chosen and promoted Captain of the gladiatorial forces. It happened a few more times, just for good measure, "G-Gilgamesh?"
Ajak laughed faintly, patting Thena's arm; she wasn't sure when her daughter had become so much taller than she. "Have you not even considered it, dear?"
Thena looked back at the Champion himself, who had his head thrown back in laughter with his troops. Her hands wrung in front of her, "I...I suppose not."
Horseshit. But Ajak held her tongue and tried a more gentle approach with her remarkably stubborn child-turned-grown-woman. "I would approve greatly. Not that I think that matters to you at all."
"Mother," Thena furrowed her brows at her as she patted her hands into submission. "Of course that would matter to me."
"Well," Ajak turned her eyes back to the Captain, who caught her eye this time. She offered a smile.
"Hup!"
Gilgamesh stood upright and dipped to bow to their queen and princess, the rest of his troops following suit.
Ajak moved into the sun of the courtyard, still holding Thena's hands and incidentally dragging her along. "Your training seems to be going well, Captain."
"Yes ma'am," Gil responded with a happy smile, despite speaking with the revered Queen Ajak herself. He looked at the recruits behind him, crossing his arms, "they have a ways to go, but I believe they will fight well for you."
"And you?" Thena asked eagerly, nearly cutting off the end of his words with her own, "are you healing well?"
Ajak nearly rolled her eyes; she had healed him herself, and it was weeks since he was able to leave a bed.
"I am," he smiled at her gently, though, his voice going as soft as a lily petal. "Thanks to you and your mother, my Lady."
Thena smiled.
Ajak took in a breath. This required more direct action, and for once, it seemed Thena was not in any mood for directness. She drew her shoulders up faintly and turned to her daughter, "Thena, I have another diplomatic meeting."
"Oh, yes," she agreed, per her promise. But her disappointment rang out from her like a gong. "We shall-"
"You can skip this one, dear," Ajak uttered quickly. This would need to happen fast. "It shall be brief, and nothing but politics. Perhaps the Captain would escort you inside for me?"
Gil startled but straightened his shoulders, "o-of course, my Lady!"
"Very well, then!" Ajak smiled at them before all but dropping Thena's hands from her arm and dashing away. She spared them a wave as she picked up the billowing white of her skirts to move as swiftly as possible. "You have my full faith, Captain."
Thena frowned at the odd statement from her mother, following her even more odd behaviour. "It is a walk; I would not think it required any strength of faith."
Gilgamesh shrugged, though, holding out his arm, bent at the elbow. "Still, it is escorting the royal princess. I'm honoured."
Thena smiled, indulging him as she settled her fingers delicately in the crook of his elbow. "Very well, then, Captain."
"Uh," a young voice cracked, "sir?"
Gil eyed his young bucks over his shoulder, "you can conduct yourself in my absence, right? I have important business with the Princess."
"Yes, sir!"
"Important business?" Thena murmured to him as they took their leave back into the shade.
He bent his head closer to her too, like children snickering about their teacher, "breaks are very important, my Lady."
The two laughed between themselves as he guided her back inside and out of the harsh daylight. Thena cleared her throat, moving her hand further from his bicep and more to his forearm. "How are you finding your new position, Gilgamesh?"
"The promotion was kind, my Lady," he smiled at her as they strolled at a leisurely pace through the open and breeze halls of the palace. "I've never been so rested."
"But do you like it?" Thena clarified, her eyes imploring the truth out of him. "Training the recruits?"
He chuckled, smiling at her more gently (if at all possible). "I love it, Thena. And I know it's because I needed time to heal after my fight."
It was a consideration most were not afforded, given the nature of their profession.
Thena sighed, eyeing his chest place in memory of the scars still there, "you should not have to fight after what you endured."
Gilgamesh shrugged, though, back to smiling blithely. "Part of the job, my Lady."
"Gil."
"Thena," he replied, laughing again. He patted the hand of hers on his arm with his other hand. "It was generous of your mother to promote me. I don't take it for granted."
"Yes," Thena agreed, warmth stealing into her cheeks. It was she who had suggested the promotion to get Gil out of the barracks and into a more comfortable position, both in work and life outside of it. "Mother is generous in spirit."
"You've had a lot of meetings since the tournament, huh?" Gil asked, more and more casual and comfortable the longer they walked together.
"Unfortunately," Thena sighed, also losing the polished edges she wore as Princess. She looked at Gil - just Gil - with a smile that was just Thena. "And they are all terribly boring."
Gil let out a laugh that echoed through the palace halls. Thena stared at it openly.
"Our advisors are demanding I select a spouse," she confided in him as they left the more open halls along the palace walls to the interior. "You would think Mother was abdicating tomorrow, based on their urgency."
"I'm sorry, Thena."
She looked at him in shock.
"I didn't mean to put that kind of pressure on you," Gil frowned in the softer light of the room. "It didn't occur to me that being free to choose would-"
"No."
He looked at her in shock this time.
"Don't ever apologise for that," she shook her head at him. "You...you have given me something no money in the world nor the crown itself could give me."
"Without you, I would be under the same expectation to marry, except that they would be chosen for me. If not selected by our advisors, then any challenging prince looking for a prize."
Gil frowned at the mention of Eros, even now that that particular thorn was removed from their sides. He gave her hand a squeeze, "I would never have let that happen, Thena."
She smiled faintly, her head tilting and her hair tumbling off her shoulder, "I know you wouldn't have. It is for that exact reason I will never have enough gratitude to gift you."
"Well, I don't know about that," Gil smiled at her, his lighter mood restored, "the fancy new bed I have in my palace room is pretty nice."
Thena did not manage to catch her laughter before it escaped, "Gil."
"Really, I mean it's nice, and the sheets!" Gil continued until Thena gave his arm a light shove with the back of her hand. It seemed to possess no force at all, and yet he looked at her as if it would rouse him from sleep. "Really, Thena, you've done more than enough. I'm the one who should be thanking you."
Thena just sighed as he brought her hand off his arm and up to his lips in a kiss. It was more gentle and reverent than any from a suitor could hope to achieve.
Ajak watched from behind one of many pillars offering her cover as she spied on the Gladiator who so possessed her daughter's heart.
"My Lady, we really should-"
Ajak shooed away the guard about to blow her cover. She really did have a meeting she had to go to. But this was far more important.

A Thenamesh Gladiator AU!
there are a few kingdoms. And every kingdom has 3 strong gladiators. And I think once a week or once a month there is this big competition between the kingdoms. And the winner gets a big price. So Thena is a princess in her Kingdom and Gil is one of her Gladiators. And she has a crush on him.
One day the Kingdom of Eros challenges Thenas, if he wins the competition she will marry him. If she wins she can choose who she wants to marry.
"Fetch my mother, tell her he has awakened."
"Yes, my Lady."
Gilgamesh groaned as he did his best to pull himself up on the cot provided to him. All he remembered was the last fight dragging on for far too long. The opposing gladiators were freakishly strong this year. Even he was having trouble with them. Gil startled, "d-did I lose?!"
"No," she soothed, kneeling down on a pillow next to his cot. She raised up a bowl, tilting his head to offer him water. "You won."
He let out a sigh, the relief reaching so deep it was in his bones. He was a champion of plenty of tournaments before this one, but losing this time especially was not acceptable.
"But I want you to forfeit."
Now he did shoot up in bed, although his bones and wounds screamed at him for it. He doubled over, holding his bruised ribs. His hand met bandaging, which still had some traces of blood on them.
"You see?"
Oh, did he. It seemed whenever they were together, all he could see was her: Thena.
"You were lucky to emerge alive after your last fight," she frowned at him, sitting back on her knees on the pillow (which she must have moved to his bedside herself). "If mother were not the master healer she is, I'm sure you would be in the same state as your opponent."
Gil had no sympathy for his opponent--not for the gladiators chosen by the visiting prince, nor Eros himself. He was the very reason Gilgamesh had to fight harder than ever before. "Princess-"
"Gilgamesh, I am quite serious," she persisted, pinning him under her glare, as green as the Adriatic Sea. "You are in no state to fight Kro."
Kro was quickly becoming a name in this tournament as Prince Eros' champion. He was also becoming known for his cruelty in battle.
"I'll get some sleep and I'll be fine."
"You could sleep for a month and not be ready to fight that monster," Thena argued, setting down her ceramic of water rather roughly.
Gil raised his brow at her, "I didn't realise you lacked faith in me, my Lady."
"Gil," she cut him off, and his given name was effective in silencing him. Her hands fisted in the fine, draping white fabric of her dress. "That man is a creature not of man's make. He...he will kill you. And he will make me watch."
"Hey, hey," Gil shook his head, rushing to comfort the shaken princess. He had seen her worry about him before, but he had never seen her so genuinely frightful. "That won't happen. I won't let it."
Thena lifted her head, looking at him with those eyes again. "And are you so omniscient? That you could control a man without honour or even a human heart in his chest?"
Gil sighed. His poetic princess was right, he couldn't guarantee that the fight tomorrow would go his way. He was not only exhausted and injured, but he was emotionally invested. And any expert on battle would say that it was a weakness for him to bear, not a strength.
"Please," Thena whispered, looking down at her trembling hands. She squeezed her eyes shut, a tear falling onto her robes. "I don't want you to get hurt, Gil. I-I couldn't bear it if you were..."
It was a funny conflict of feelings, feeling overjoyed that she would care so much as to weep over him, but not wanting to see her weep at all. He reached out, tipping her chin up to look at him. "Do you remember when we first met?"
She smiled, blinking away tears a princess couldn't afford to shed. "You were walking into the Colosseum. Plenty of gladiators had looked up at us before, but you smiled, and then you waved. I suppose I found it too tempting to resist waving back."
Gil smiled as well. He did treasure that memory; the first instance in which he had seen the Thena behind the crown. And he liked what he saw. "No, I mean the next time--when we met properly."
It had been after his first fight. He was arguably the strongest of the new gladiators in training, but initiation was also to fight a lion. He had not exactly come out unscathed.
But he had also refused to kill the lion. It was cruel and barbaric he stated proudly. It wasn't that poor creature's fault that it had been captured, now forced to fight off strange men for its meals.
Thena had been the one to declare the end of that practice. She had ordered the lion's release, as well as the tending of Gilgamesh's wounds. It was then that he had first spoken to her. He was being tended to a cot much like the one he was lying on now.
The glowing princess had knelt down, as close to him as the bars separating them would allow. She was royalty, and to be so close to a lowly trainee would be beneath her, after all. But he had watched her raise two fingers, hooking them over one of the gate bars tenderly.
"Are you hurt?"
Every time hearing her voice was like hearing it that first time; he never tired of it.
"Nah," he had chuckled, taking on such a casual tone with the princess that the medics tending to him had gasped in horror. "Not so bad."
But she had smiled.
Thena looked up at him now, a long way from that first night she knelt by his side in the bowels of the Colosseum. "I asked what I might do to help your healing."
"And I said?" he raised a brow at her, still relishing the feeling of her skin against his thumb.
Thena dropped her eyes, offering exasperation with her reluctant smile. It was faint, but it was true. "My smile was help enough."
"See?" he chuckled, letting his fingers pull away from her oh-so reluctantly. Maybe he could keep the feeling of touching her in his mind as motivation. "I'll be better before you know it."
She shook her head at him, her golden locks tousling beautifully around her shoulders. "Mother will not let you go back into battle because of a smile."
"And I'm not going to let that ingrate marry you."
Thena sighed, as if she could have somehow forgotten about the outlandish circumstances of this year's prize. Her hands folded on her lap again. "I suppose I have no desire to fulfill that agreement either."
"So it's decided," Gilgamesh said with absolute certainty, regardless of the pain in his side or the burn of his hands from gripping his sword. "I'll fight tomorrow. And I'll win."
Thena stared down between them, neither agreeing nor having another argument in her against it.
"I'll win, Thena," he insisted, reaching down to take one of her hands in his. The golden bangles around her delicate wrists clinked in contrast to the leather guards that sat around his. "I promise you. You'll be no one's prize."
She managed another smile, giving his hand the faintest squeeze in return. "Are you saying I am no prize?"
Gil inhaled. He knew that she was offering a joke to lighten his mood in return. But he couldn't resist; he raised her hand to his lips. "No, you are not the prize. The prize is getting to live, just so I can see that smile another day."
The princess stared at him, silent after a little poetry of his own. "Gil-"
"Gilgamesh," the queen greeted as she walked in, although she blinked when her daughter rushed to stand so quickly she swayed to gain her balance. Ajak tilted her head, "Thena."
"Mother," Thena greeted her, sounding breathless as if she had run here as well. Her hand toyed with her luxurious golden hair. "I was--we were awaiting your arrival."
"Right," Ajak muttered, going to the gladiator's side to check his wounds. There was already a pillow at his bedside (how convenient).
Thena watched quietly, her hands perched on the edge of the cot.
Ajak kept quiet as Gilgamesh's fingers snuck ever so subtly over to just barely brush against Thena's. She could choose to ask them about it, if she so desired. She was the queen, after all. And she had witnessed her daughter's fondness for this warrior in particular before.
But hopefully the fight tomorrow would go well. And she would have to be silent no longer about Thena's obvious love for the Champion Gladiator.

You gotta continue the Gladiator AU!! I'm dying to know what's gonna happen next!
Thena shot to her feet as her mother exited the private healing chambers reserved only for the most important of patients. "Is he...?"
Ajak placed a hand - properly scrubbed and rid of blood - on her daughter's shoulder. "He will live."
Thena rushed past her mother, regardless of royal manner and protocol. She crossed what felt like an insurmountable distance between the door to the room and the bed, nearly falling to her knees at the sight of Gilgamesh lying there, breathing.
He was breathing.
Ajak walked in again, following her daughter to deliver more news than simply that he was not deceased. "He is lucky--he's only alive because of how strong he is."
Thena's eyes were already swimming with tears, "oh, Gil."
Ajak kept quiet about the way Thena's hand ran over his cheek and forehead and into his hair. She sighed, "Thena."
"I told you," Thena whispered to him, all but ignoring her mother over her shoulder. "I told you not to fight that monster."
"Speaking of that monster," Ajak spoke just a little louder. She required Thena's attention. "Thena, we must speak with Eros."
Thena swiped at her eyes, taking up her typical stoic expression. "I have nothing to say to that man."
"Thena," Ajak repeated, although Thena went back to leaning over Gilgamesh, watching his take slow but deep breaths. They had sewn his wounds, treated his swelling as best they could. He looked somewhat like his usual self.
"Mother, please," Thena looked up at her, her hand clutching at Gilgamesh's. "What could I possibly have to say to him?"
"He is our guest," Ajak grumbled, just as regretful of that fact as Thena. "We must see him off, especially to tell him that you will not be leaving with him?"
Thena kept her eyes on their Champion of champions. "I knew he would win. But...but what he did for us... "
What he had done for her specifically, rather. What he had done as a humble Fighter in the name of Thena's life and freedom was unparalleled.
Ajak sighed deeply. "I know you do not want to speak with the prince. I do not want to either, Thena. But-"
"What if he wakes?" Thena cut her mother off, which was a punishable act for anyone else. "What if he wakes and he's alone? H-He won't know what happened. Last he woke and thought he lost he nearly leapt to his feet. If he does that this time he will-"
"Thena," Ajak gripped her shoulder, stilling her anxious child's unusually twisted tongue.
"I will not leave him, Mother."
Ajak looked at Thena, the determined line of her eyebrows and the set of her jaw. She looked down at her hand in Gilgamesh's, their fingers woven together like trees meeting over a walkway and reaching for each other's branches for support.
"I will commit no other treason in my life," Thena promised, turning around again now that her peace was said. She used her free hand to smooth over Gil's blankets. "If you allow me this one solace, I shall do anything you ask of me for the rest of my days."
What a steep price for such a small request.
Ajak regarded Thena, perched at the gladiator's side. It was different from even the last time she had found her so. And something she had seen only drops of before was now thundering in her ears. "I have no more asks to demand, I think now, my dear."
Thena regarded her mother as she stood at the head of the bed, also sparing their Champion a warm glance.
"The condition of his victory," Ajak elaborated, gesturing to the man unconsciously being showered with Thena's attentions. "It was not for your marriage to another party, but that the choice be left up to you. All my efforts to find you suitors these years will be no longer."
Thena visibly considered it just as the words were hitting the air.
"Have you?" Ajak prodded lightly, tilting her head to catch any shift in Thena's reaction as she looked at Gilgamesh again. "Thought about it?"
"No," she answered automatically. And in truth, she had never considered her own marriage in real terms--not until it became very, very real to her over the past weeks. She sighed, her shoulders sinking low, "no, I haven't."
Ajak caught the way Thena's other hand was also taken in by the siren call of Gil's hand lying on the bed. She could say whatever she liked, but her hands holding his the way she would treasure the gift of life itself said more than enough. "I will see off the prince."
Thena looked up at her, "truly?"
"Yes, you stay with Gilgamesh," Ajak conceded, with the same smile any mother got when allowing their child something out of sheer love of their happiness. "Like you say, we can't have him worsening his condition if he wakes alone."
"Thank you, Mother," Thena blinked, tears rising in her eyes again. She did not even wipe them away this time, blinking rapidly until the tears were caught in her eyelashes.
"Hm," Ajak hummed with an affectionate hand to Thena's shoulder on her way past. "Perhaps this is for the best. I will not have to endure him looking at you the way a teen looks at his first brothel."
Thena wasn't even listening.
Ajak sighed again. "Alert the guards when he wakes. They will fetch me."
"Yes," Thena mumbled, barely paying her mind as Gil's breath hitched in his sleep. She rose only to rub his chest and adjust his pillow, soothing his discomfort. "I shall."
Ajak smiled on her way to see off their most unwelcome guest. She would have to wait some time, she imagined, but she was quite sure that Thena's decision to marry would come sooner than she could have hoped.

Declaration of War
For @oldtvserieslover 's birthday, after asking about something for the Gladiator AU!
"My name is Eros," the newcomer smiled in a way that made both the queen and her daughter bristle. "And you, Princess, are as beautiful as the legends say."
His statement was accompanied by an up-and-down of her with his hungry eyes.
"Prince Eros," Ajak addressed him directly, and rather kindly, given the way he was looking at her daughter. "We welcome you to the tournament of Champions. You have come to challenge?"
"Indeed I have," the Prince grinned at them, bowing his mane of hair slightly to them. "I believe my selected champions will stand a great chance of beating you this time around, my Lady."
"Hm," Thena vocalised, mostly to herself. Her eyes drifted from the challenger in title to the actual fighters accompanying him.
They were lined up, facing their own gladiators. There was one who was clearly their first pick to win. He stood like a beast, massive in height and still heavily muscled. His face hardly even seemed human.
He was staring down Gilgamesh.
"We shall see," Ajak offered diplomatically, offering a polite sort of smile to the visiting Prince. "We have yet to be bested in the past years."
"Actually, I was hoping to propose," the Prince stepped back into proximity with the ladies, "higher stakes."
"Such as," Ajak frowned, backing up a step, incidentally pushing Thena further back as well.
"Such as a proposal," he tipped his chin up, his eyes shifting to Thena as if Ajak had disappeared from his line of sight. "I propose that my prize is the hand of the Lady herself."
"What?" Gilgamesh spoke up from his end of the line, although no one but Thena even looked at him as he spoke.
"That is hardly-" Ajak blinked as the Prince swooped down in a deep bow.
"I ask that if my chosen gladiators win, that I win the hand of the princess," he spoke downward, expressing a humility that he completely lacked just a moment ago. "The treasury I'm offering as a bet on my warriors is triple that of our other competitors."
Indeed, the funds offered by the brazen prince would provide for their coffers very nicely.
"And if we win?" Thena challenged, although something about the Prince's sly gaze and the presence of that beast of a man made her skin crawl.
Eros cocked his head at her with a grin that she could only imagine would have his concubines melting. "Why, you may ask anything you like, my darling bride. Since I intend to win no matter the challenge posed."
"We haven't even fought yet."
At last, the other royals present looked at Gilgamesh, still speaking up with no regard for if it was considered insolent of him - a mere fighter for the crown - or not. He met their critical glares without fear, shrugging his wide shoulders. "You could at least let her set her own conditions."
Thena shook her head ever so faintly, urging him to stay silent on the matter. She had come to enjoy speaking with him, and her mother - having become aware of this rapport between them - tolerated it. But most who were part of royalty did not welcome interruptions by civilians.
Eros chuckled, giving Gilgamesh a different kind of smile. It was still a smile, and still meant to appear affable. But this one was sharper edged and colder--the tilt of his head was so...demeaning. "Did you say something, brute?"
"Yeah, I did," Gil continued, undeterred by Eros' obvious disgust with him. His fists clenched, "it's pretty ballsy of you to come in here and demand to marry the princess. The least you could do is accept the conditions if you lose."
"Well, I don't intend to lose, so by all means," the prince bared his teeth at Gil now, like a predator toying with prey it knew it could outrun. "Set any conditions you like."
"Gil," Thena whispered, but he stepped up to Eros (and in front of her).
Gil got right in the Prince's face, who happily let him, meeting his challenge with a manic delight. "Speak up, pleb."
"If I win," Gil started without even considering the other gladiators selected alongside him. It was always just him by the final rounds of the tournament anyway. "Thena gets to marry anyone she chooses."
"The Lady may select her own groom," Eros postulated, emphasising the proper title for her, in contrast to Gil's overly familiar use of her given name. "What a peculiar thought."
Gil stood firm on the spot, even with the beast of a challenger moving forward and breathing like a bull ready to charge. "She gets to make her own choice. And no one gets to say a damn thing about it--not you, or anyone else."
"Hm," Eros raised his brows at Gil's adamant proposal. He looked amused by the resolve he showed and stepped away from the shorter but significantly more strongly built man. "Fine, I accept your little wager."
Thena glared at him again. Her life and freedom was a 'little wager', apparently.
"But know this, Gilgamesh," Eros turned his eyes on him again, voice sharp and eyes cold. "I do not intend to leave this place empty handed."
"I don't care what you intend," Gil snarled at him, finally backing up but not moving away from Thena behind him as Eros walked off and beckoned for his chosen fighters to follow. "You're not coming anywhere near her."
Ajak let out a breath as the prince and his entourage descended the steps to their mezzanine. She looked at the guards, who were hovering with their weapons, waiting for the word to be given about how the lowly gladiator was standing inappropriately close to the princess. Ajak shook her head, "relax, all of you."
The guards stood back against the walls, although Gil was still glaring at where Eros and his gladiators had vanished. He huffed, crossing his arms, "the nerve of that guy."
"Gil," Thena cut in, glaring at him (and forgetting that she too was addressing him far too casually).
"What?" he shrank back at her obvious ire. "D-Did I do something wrong?"
"Y-You-!" Thena pinched her full lips together, pressing her fingers together before she could make a real fist with them. "That thing with him will be out for your blood, after that altercation!"
"Well," he shrugged at her as if he were talking with anyone else and not the crown princess herself. "He was going to be anyway, right?"
"That's not the point!"
"Thena," Ajak scolded, watching her daughter squabble with one of their own fighters.
"I'm sorry," Gilgamesh conceded, bowing his head to his monarchs. "To both of you, my Lady. But I couldn't just...I couldn't let him think-"
"You have issued a very serious challenge, Gilgamesh," Ajak addressed him firmly but not unkindly. "This cannot be taken lightly."
"It won't be," he assured his queen before turning to his princess. "I'll win."
Thena bit down on the inside of her lip, "you can't know that will happen."
"I can, I'll make it happen," he affirmed, stating it as boldly as he would state any fact about the ocean being deep or the sun being bright. He held her eyes, not letting her fear sway him at all. "I'll win, Thena."
Ajak cleared her throat. That was quite enough use of given names for now. She would have to address it later. "Come--you must prepare for the first round of fights."
"Yes," Gil bowed, stepping back into the line, where his fellow competitors were staring slack jawed at him for yet again speaking with the princess audaciously.
"And you," Ajak turned to Thena, whose face betrayed her nervousness for just a second. "Come with me."
"Yes, mother," Thena murmured, indeed following Ajak up the stairs to the shaded platform for their respective thrones. She looked behind her.
Gil offered a faint smile and a little wave, same as he did every time he saw her, no matter the distance between them.
Thena's eyes were drawn and her frown was heavy, but she still managed to wave back at him as they drifted apart.

Wow, wonderful Gladiator AU! What about a fight now? Gil fighting Kro? Kro is winning and he's doing cruel things to Gil and people are already celebrating. Thena couldn't bear to watch him getting hurt and she couldn't stand people not about talking about her marriage with Eros but them celebrating every pain Gil was receiving. Kro had already left Gil's unmoving body and is celebrating already, getting all the hype of the arena. Thena's on her tears still believing that he can still do it, she had her faith on him. Gil with his numb body looked at Thena's direction and she SMILED at him and maybe saying 'I love you' to him that he can clearly read on her mouth. That gave him enough power to shot himself back and attack Kro who's already celebrating.
"Champion! Champion!"
The crowd was cheering. Gilgamesh could barely pry his eyes open as the sounds of their roaring celebration intermingled with the blood in his ears. He blinked, half of his view being the dirt of the arena floor, dotted with his blood throughout. The other half was of the stands, and of the people of his own allegiance cheering for his massacre.
"Are you not entertained!" Kro held out his hands, laughing as he celebrated Gil's defeat, and his death that he would surely deliver once he felt properly adulated.
Gil tried to pick himself up, but he had no strength left in him, for once. He could barely even feel his extremities, actually. He did his best to move any part of him at all, but with movement came pain. There was no feeling if he was moving his arms or his legs or his head, just pain, everywhere.
"Is this your Champion?!" Kro cackled, picking Gil up just so he could toss him away again. His body tumbled, like a stone skipping on a river. "This is a ragdoll I shall soon dispose of!"
Gil groaned. At least the rolling and tumbling helped him realise he was indeed awake, and not deceased as of yet. He was indeed in scorching, searing pain, but that also meant that he could still feel most of his body. He tried to pick up his head again.
Thena.
He could see Thena. He blinked, although one of his eyes was slower to shut than the other, most likely from the pummelling. But he could see her--he could see here anywhere, from any distance. She was standing, clutching her hands together in front of her. She was worried.
Oh yeah, she hadn't wanted him to enter this fight. She had told him that she was too worried after the fights he had already fought. She had told him that she feared for his life. She had told him that Kro would kill him, and make her watch.
He tried to pick himself up again, but by all the stars in the sky, it was hard. It felt like he wasn't even trying to lift his own body, but trying to lift something much heavier from outside of his own form.
"Gil."
He couldn't hear it--no, that would be impossible. But looking at her, he could swear he could hear her saying his name, in that voice of hers that was like the rustling of flowers in the wind.
"Gilgamesh, please."
He really could swear he could hear her voice. Maybe he was closer to death than he thought.
"I love you."
He blinked. He could make no mistake. There was a lot happening, and he was quite sure he was closer to death than he had ever been. But he had seen those words on her lips, plain as the sun in her hair.
Kro was still celebrating, revelling in his victory. He hadn't even glanced back at him once since tossing him away. As far as he was concerned, Gil was already dead.
Gilgamesh kept his eyes open as he pushed himself forward. He grunted, knowing his chest would feel tomorrow as if he had let an oxen sleep right on it. But he pushed himself up with his hands, more conscious than ever of his heart hammering in his chest.
He would get to hear her say it to him for real, he was sure of it.
Gil drew his knees up, forcing himself to fight against the weight of gravity until he could sway onto his feet. He panted from the effort. Thena was right, Kro had every intention of killing him.
He turned, dragging himself closer. The crowd was still ignoring him, maybe waiting to see what pathetic attempt he would make when he was so clearly already defeated. He scoffed.
"That is my Champion!" Eros shouted from his throne sitting across the arena from Thena and Ajak's. "You shall be honored when I am leaving with my bride in hand!"
In hand--he talked about Thena the way he would a pheasant caught on a hunt. He looked at her like a slab of meat sliced just for him. Gil did not want to even imagine what the man's thoughts of Thena were like (undoubtedly disgusting).
"I am your new Champion!" Kro shouted for himself, still with his back to Gil. He turned to face the queen and princess, pointing, "I am your new Chamion!"
"No!"
Gil faced Kro head on. He could have attacked the monster from behind. It was probably a better idea, given he didn't seem tired out from their fight at all. But that was not the Gladiator way. And just because this beast had no honour, didn't mean Gil was without it.
"You!" Kro snarled, moving and hoisting Gil up by his chestplate. He shook him, letting his feet dangle. "You yet live?"
"I'm not done yet," Gil growled back at him, still all but gasping for breath.
"Oh, you are," Kro argued with a grin. He raised his fist, ready to deliver a punch that would truly kill him. "I shall make sure, this time."
Gil let out a more even breath. His shaking stilled as he watched Kro raise his fist. He had a habit of moving his head as he did, exposing one length of his neck more than the other.
Gil's hand moved quickly, bringing up the shred of metal that remained of the weapons that Kro had used to break and batter him. He gripped one in each hand, unminding of the pain in his palms from doing so. He crossed them through Kro, over and upwards, slicing across him cleanly.
Kro blinked before his skin split, over his eyes, his cheeks, his throat. It was quick--one minute he was standing, the next he crumbled to the ground, a thing of the past.
Gil stumbled back, breathing hard. He resisted the urge to lie down again and close his eyes. He looked up, first at Eros, who could barely believe what he had witness. He looked over at Thena, across the great distance between them. He smiled.
"We have our Champion!"
