Businesses turn to tech as they reopen
Tumblr media
When employees at the 3D bioprinting company Cellink went back to the office Monday after nearly five months, they were required to clip a small piece of Bluetooth technology onto their clothes before walking through the office’s front doors.
The devices, made by the Austrian company Safedi, are intended to make sure people are socially distancing in the office. A green light shines when people are at least six feet apart.
A red light flashes and the device emits a noise when people get too close.
“Safedi has already shown its value in just one day, especially when it’s time for those coffee breaks,” Cellink CEO Erik Gatenholm said.
The devices are one example of the varied and sometimes bizarre tech-infused solutions businesses are using in an effort to get their employees back to work and offer their customers a safe environment amid the ongoing outbreaks of the coronavirus in the United States and in various parts of the world.
Gusten Danielsson, CFO of Cellink, wears a bluetooth transmitter on his belt that warns him if he gets too close to other employees.Cellink
As some technologists have worked to create state-of-the-art contact tracing systems, others have embraced existing technologies to make simple solutions to the everyday questions that businesses now face, such as how many people can be in a building at any given time?
And some other technologies that have failed to catch on more broadly such as QR codes and robotics are starting to become more common, as well.
That has led some companies to move to take advantage of the new needs of many businesses.
When Dublin issued a shutdown order, Conall Laverty, founder and CEO of cloud platform Wia, saw an opportunity to pivot to hardware. Laverty and his team built a sensor during the pandemic that companies can pair with a remote cloud-computing platform to anonymously count and regulate the flow of people in and out of a place of business, even regulating the number of people in hallways and bathrooms at any given time.
It’s already in high demand. The company, which is based in the Irish capital, recently signed a deal with BigDish, a U.K. restaurant technology company, to roll out its product, called DFS-1, in more than 650 restaurants. Last week, Wia also installed one of its earliest orders at the landmark Jameson Distillery Bow St. in Dublin.
“This is a big transition for us,” Laverty said. “We originally started Wia to help engineers easily build Internet of Things devices, but now have evolved the business to provide state-of-the-art sensor technologies to some of the biggest names in the world.”

While maintaining social distance is a crucial part of coronavirus mitigation efforts, businesses are also working on making sure their facilities are routinely disinfected. That’s provided an opportunity for robotics to take on new tasks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When stay-at-home orders were issued at the start of March, DCL Logistics, a fulfillment company in Fremont, California, that ships online orders for brands such as thermometer maker Kinsa and cereal company Magic Spoon, saw a 30 percent surge in business.
Under normal circumstances, DCL would have hired people, chief revenue officer Brian Tu told Reuters, but keeping existing employees safe and socially distanced in their California fulfillment centers required a different fix.
Instead, they added to their fleet of robots with cobots, collaborative robots, according to a blog post from Tu. The robots are made by Universal Robots, a company based in Odense, Denmark. and have been used to help pick and pack orders. Each fulfillment line used to require five workers, he said. With the robots, it now takes two. DCL plans to bring in more robotic help at its facilities in California and Kentucky this year.
FarmWise, a San Francisco company that makes robots to help with farming tasks, from picking weeds to harvesting vegetables, said it has seen an increase in interest from farmers in California and Arizona seeking to bring on robotic helpers to assist scaled-down crews of employees.
“The biggest factor here is the state of mind farmers are put into and how difficult it is to maintain their production level with this crisis,” FarmWise CEO Sebastien Boyer said.
Robots have already been mixing coffees and smoothies at kiosks for years, but with more of them in the kitchen, employees would have time to thoroughly disinfect restaurant tables and bathrooms.
Fast-food giant White Castle plans to test a robotic arm called Flippy that will be tested as the new burger flipper and fry cook at some of its restaurants. The burger chain had been in talks with Miso Robotics, based in Pasadena, California, about Flippy before the pandemic, but the virus made the need to shift human resources to disinfecting tasks even more urgent.
Robots are also doing more cleaning. FabLab Bahrain, based in Manama, created an autonomous cleaning robot that emits UV light to kill the coronavirus as did the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. Manufacturers of cleaning-focused robots have enjoyed a spike in sales.
While robots are helping humanity find its new normal during the pandemic, the key will be collaboration, Karen Panetta, dean of graduate education at Tufts University’s School of Engineering, said.
Robots need humans to operate or maintain them. In some cases, they also aren’t a complete substitute for humans.
“When it comes to cleaning and disinfecting, robots perform well in uniform spaces, such as open floors, but are challenged by objects and constrained spaces,” she said.
“The unique challenges that we’re currently facing require more innovative and integrative systems that require human-machine cooperation to make progress,” she added.
Some companies, most notably restaurants, are embracing an even older piece of technology as part of their reopening plans: QR codes.
The codes, which were invented in 1994 by the Japanese company Denso Wave to help track vehicles during the manufacturing process and resemble a square version of a bar code, never really caught on with the general public despite the proliferation of smartphones that can easily read them with cameras.
But the codes are providing a simple way for restaurants to provide their menus in a digital fashion, avoiding the risk of physical, coronavirus-laden paper.
In some cases, restaurants are even asking customers to order and pay using the restaurant’s unique code.
At the Frying Pan, a popular Manhattan boat bar, special QR codes are on each table. Customers are instructed to scan the codes, order and pay, instead of walking up to the bar and ordering. At Tuna Bar, a Philadelphia sushi restaurant, owner and chef Kenneth Sze said he’s using QR codes for his menus, giving the restaurant one less item to sanitize.
“The QR codes are very efficient since we can update the menu as we need,” he said “Since the restaurant isn’t at full capacity, our menu is limited to keep things fresh.”
However, Sze said he’s hesitant about going all-in on technology and making the dining experience at his restaurant even more contactless. He wants to see how the next few months go before he makes a decision.
“I’m used to a waiter approaching you and giving full service. I know that’s kind of changing, but I’m old school,” he said. “I’m hesitant of fully committing because I want that service.”

Latest story from https://movietvtechgeeks.com/agents-shield-speculations-no-avengers-framework/
'Agents of SHIELD' Speculations: Why no Avengers in the framework?
The Framework was originally conceived by scientist Holden Radcliffe and his assistant Life Model Decoy AIDA to be a virtual paradise where the human consciousness can live on or enter and be free of their greatest pain and regret. However, it is now a nightmare scenario corrupted by AIDA in which HYDRA holds dominion in the United States and probably the world. So where are the Avengers? The Avengers were basically formed through the machinations of Nick Fury, Phil Coulson and SHIELD. Unfortunately, several years prior, SHIELD was defeated and disbanded by HYDRA because of an event known as the Cambridge incident. Agent Melinda May, an early test subject for the Framework continues to harbor regrets over her mission in Bahrain years before where she was forced to kill an Inhuman child. The child was responsible for several murders because she underwent terrigenisis without undergoing a test for worthiness from the Inhuman group of Jia Ying, Daisy’s birth mother. In the Framework, that mission succeeded without May having to kill the child. The child however immigrated to the US and was placed in school where she killed dozens of people. The incident cast SHIELD in a bad light before managing to form the Avengers Initiative. Already infiltrated, HYDRA stepped out of the shadows and defeats SHIELD. Phil Coulson’s greatest regret as revealed by his LMD was actually giving up a normal life by joining SHIELD. That was granted to him in the Framework, and Coulson was an integral part in the forming of the Avengers. Without his intervention, Tony Stark and Pepper Potts would probably have been killed off by Obadiah Stane and Stane neutralized by HYDRA later. Without Phil Coulson to lead the unit in New Mexico, events would have turned out differently, and Odinson wouldn’t have been able to regain Mjolnir and the power of Thor. Loki then rules Asgard unchallenged and events leading to him being found by Thanos never happened. Nick Fury may have been killed earlier before he could plan the Avengers Initiative and events that led to the recovery of Steve Rogers would never have happened. The same goes for Agent Romanov who was tasked to find Bruce Banner in India so there’s no Hulk. Without Iron Man, Captain America and the Hulk, then, there’s no Avengers. The Hulk would simply be at large. Clint Barton and Agent Romanov are either killed or hunted fugitives. Can Ward come back as an LMD One unique thing they did with the Framework arc was to bring back Agent Ward. How he came to be is a mystery. He could be a product of Daisy’s entry into the Framework as one of her regrets that need correcting or as part of Fitz as he and Ward shared a bond. Or he can be just another random agent. Being random however, doesn’t account for his being a double agent. He could have been placed there by AIDA in a soon to be revealed plan. Radcliffe even called Ward Hive since that’s how he knew Ward at the time when Hive forced him to turn ordinary humans into Inhumans. But Ward’s current personality is intriguing as he seems to be on the side of good this time around. He seems to show a genuine concern and even love for Skye and is on SHIELD’s side having the implicit trust of SHIELD leader Jeffrey Mace. Ward chose to join the resistance in order to shield Daisy from being discovered as a potential Inhuman. So will ABC bring Ward back somehow after all this is over to shake things up for Daisy? Is Brett Dalton out of work that ABC decided to give him his old job back? I’ll have to admit that Ward’s character is more likable this time and Skyward fans probably agree. So how can he come back? The only possible option for him, since his body was blown up in space would be to come back as an LMD. It would be interesting to have another powered SHIELD member who’s not an Inhuman like Quake and Yoyo. With LMD technology available, they can prepare a body for Ward and download him from the Framework as a reward for services rendered, as help against AIDA and her forces in the real world or as a general concern for his character who gets ‘killed’ once the Framework is shut off, which can’t be done without totally killing Radcliffe. Will Fitz become a Villain? Speaking of getting killed, Fitz killed Agnes Kitsworth, the human AIDA was modeled after. AIDA’s lie about Agnes replacing her may have factored into Fitz decision to kill Agnes outright. Fitz viewed Agnes as a threat to his apparent love for Ophelia or Madame Hydra. Fitz’s actions in the recent episode Identities and Change suggest his false memories do not account for Jemma Simmons being in his life in any way, though AIDA fears otherwise that an image of Jemma might snap Fitz out of her control. Surprisingly, unlike Mace, Mack and Coulson, Fitz doesn’t seem to have any trace of morality in him and seems to relish his torture of Inhumans. He doesn’t have a problem torturing an old man and a beat-up Inhuman. Does the real Leopold Fitz harbor psychopathic tendencies? Or does he have a tendency to love to the extent of going overboard, that he’s willing to do anything to prove his love for Ophelia? If it’s the former, then it complicates things for SHIELD in the future after they get out of the Framework. Why? Because things will get less interesting for FitzSimmons if they continue to be together. Their conflict is part of the dynamics that keep the show interesting, and it probably wouldn’t hurt to have Fitz go the villain route for one season. Being too brilliant can sometimes be a drawback as morality takes a backseat when people rely too much on logic. In Marvel comics, when you pull the right strings, someone like Reed Richards could easily become a villain or a first class ass like what happened in the first Civil War when he created a clone of Thor that killed the hero Goliath resulting in Susan Richards separating herself from him. In Marvel Zombies, Reed became insane and considered zombification as the next step in human evolution and in the Ultimate Universe, he became a villain known as The Maker. It turns out that The Maker is a refugee from that destroyed universe out to make life miserable for Victor Von Doom, the Infamous Iron Man. The problem with turning Fitz into a villain in a future season is that they’ll have to retire the character after his defeat. Redemption would be difficult for Fitz in case he has to murder again and if there are Skyward fans who recently got their wish, there are also FitzSimmons fans that want Fitz and Jemma to be together. Guess we’ll find out in due time what the showrunners and writers are really up to. As we reported Thursday, Agents of SHIELD Season 5 is a done deal, so we've got plenty to look forward to!

Coronavirus Briefing: What Happened Today
Mixed messages in the C.D.C.’s new guidelines for reopening schools
In the anguished battle over reopening America’s schools, the nation is divided into distinct, sometimes overlapping groups. There are those who want schools to fully reopen in the fall in order to restore normalcy for children or to help reopen the economy or both, and others who are much more concerned that in-person instruction could seed broader outbreaks.
Into this morass comes a package of documents from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about reopening schools, a second attempt after President Trump assailed the agency’s original recommendations last month as “very tough and expensive.” This time there’s something for everyone.
The documents include an opening statement that offers a full-throated call to reopen schools this fall, sounding at times more like a political speech than a scientific document. The C.D.C. did not write it; the statement was created by a working group convened by officials at the Department of Health and Human Services.
It lists many reasons children benefit from being in school, and downplays potential health risks, repeatedly describing children as unlikely to catch or spread the virus, even though the transmission risk is not definitively known.
But the package also includes information that some epidemiologists said was helpful, including checklists for parents and mitigation measures for schools, like keeping desks at least six feet apart, teaching hand-washing and mask-wearing, and keeping small groups of children in one classroom all day.
Our colleague Abby Goodnough, who covers health care for The Times, told us that after all of the back and forth on back-to-school guidelines, “the C.D.C.’s job is done for now.”
“It’s now pretty fully in the hands of local school districts and principals and superintendents to figure this out,” she said, “and there’s really not a lot of time left to make these decisions.” Because the new materials are of two minds — arguing for children to return to school while recommending very cautious guidelines for doing so — it won’t go far in mending the splits dividing Americans about how and when to reopen schools.
“It’s confusing,” she told us. “I would say that instead of providing clarity or creating a truce, it just kind of digs people into their differing positions on this even more.”
The cost of getting it wrong. A number of virus clusters in the U.S. have been traced back to school-related events like graduation ceremonies or gatherings of teenagers.
The state of testing: dismal
If you want a coronavirus test in the U.S., be prepared to wait days, even weeks, for the results. As the nation’s outbreak continues to rage, the demand for testing has overwhelmed labs and supply chains, leading to long delays that could be helping the virus spread.
In New York City, 20,000 to 35,000 people have been tested most weekdays recently — far below the target of 50,000 — but even that has strained local labs. Rapid-testing capacity hasn’t ramped up at the state and city levels, and case spikes in the West and the South have deluged national labs.
The delays have limited officials’ ability to quickly identify new cases and perform contact tracing. Quick turnaround times are considered critical for limiting transmission from people who do not show symptoms and may not isolate themselves until they know they have the virus.
But demand for lab capacity is only likely to increase as flu season approaches and universities that bring students to campus rely on plans to test them frequently.
Also contributing to the bottlenecks: strained or dwindling supplies of the machines, containers, chemicals and tools, like plastic pipette tips, used to move liquid between vials.
The surge, by percentage. President Trump has blamed the ballooning U.S. case count on increased testing, but the rise in infections far outpaces the higher volume of tests, a Times analysis found. Over nearly the last two months, the average number of tests has grown by 80 percent — to about 780,000 per day — while daily case counts shot up 215 percent.
Millions of Americans are on the brink of losing the $600 a week the federal government has been providing on top of state unemployment benefits to help them weather the pandemic. The extra benefit expires at the end of the month, but because of a quirk in the calendar, workers in most states won’t qualify for the payments after this week.
Unemployment income will drop off sharply for everyone, but lower-income workers will feel the hit the most.
To help those receiving benefits understand what the change means, The Times charted the shift in replacement income — the share of income that unemployment benefits make up — in every state.
Resurgences
Hong Kong — which had long kept the virus at bay while keeping schools, restaurants and malls open — announced new restrictions in the face of its largest outbreak since the beginning of the pandemic.
An outbreak in Melbourne, Australia, has rattled officials after extensive testing and early lockdowns had limited outbreaks for months.
In Israel, where cases are spiking and nearly one in nine people are now unemployed, thousands of millennials have blocked the streets outside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s official residence repeatedly to demand that he quit.
Masks, already mandatory in much of Europe, are now required in shops and supermarkets in England, where people had resisted over fears of appearing perturbed or ridiculous.
Here’s a roundup of restrictions in all 50 states.
What else we’re following
The Times charted the countries with the worst outbreaks, judging by new daily cases per million people. Oman, Bahrain, Panama, South Africa and the U.S. lead the pack.
President Trump signed executive orders targeting high drug prices, even as he is relying on drug companies to develop virus treatments and vaccines. The orders alone cannot change policy.
The federal government sent nursing homes across the country faulty protective gear, including expired respirator masks and surgical masks crafted from underwear fabric.
More than one-third of the U.S. women’s Olympic rowing team was infected with Covid-19. Now, they’re warning young, healthy people to take the virus more seriously.
When business at a laundry shop in Taiwan slowed during the pandemic, the owners, an octogenarian couple, used the extra time to model left-behind garments on Instagram.
What you’re doing
As I now spend so much time washing my hands, I am using the time to memorize poems. I tape a poem to my bathroom mirror, and each time I wash my hands, rather than singing “Happy Birthday,” I memorize a poem or stanza.
— Karen O’Kain, Vancouver, British Columbia

UAE Accepts Crypto Regulation, Blockchain Projects Stand to Benefit
UAE Accepts Crypto Regulation, Blockchain Projects Stand to Benefit:
The Securities and Commodities Authority (SCA) in the United Arab Emirates has drafted a resolution on regulating crypto assets, providing greater clarity for crypto-related projects in the Middle East nation.
With the focus usually on China, Japan or the United States, the Middle East is an area that doesn’t often get the attention it deserves when it comes to blockchain and cryptocurrencies. However, barring a few highly restrictive countries, such as Iraq and Kuwait, the region generally exhibits a very progressive and supportive stance when it comes to the blockchain industry.
Speaking to Cointelegraph, Sukhi Jutla, a blockchain author as well as a Financial Times and Google Top 100 European Digital Champion, commented that by drafting this resolution, the UAE is sending a positive sign to the world, adding that:
“They are signalling that they are open to exploring this area and by creating guidelines they are giving more reassurance, confidence and stability to businesses owners who may want to enter this field.”
This move by the UAE could potentially lead to other nations moving in a similar direction, which would help remove a lot of the obstacles that the industry currently faces. She went on, saying:
“The UAE has been smart enough to understand that this innovation will grow in years to come and they don’t want to miss it. I wouldn’t be surprised if the UAE becomes the leading nation in this space just as they did with the oil and property space.”
Related: From Qatar to Palestine: How Cryptocurrencies Are Regulated in the Middle East
While countries like Turkey, Iran and Israel are in the process of investigating the advantages of blockchain technology, the UAE, along with both Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, is leading the charge when it comes to positive crypto and blockchain legislation. The UAE, in particular, already hosts several blockchain initiatives that stand to benefit significantly from the new regulations.
The Digital Silk Road
As reported at the start of October, the Dubai Chamber of Commerce announced a partnership with one of the UAE’s largest state-owned banks, Emirates NBD. The agreement aims to help drive progress of the Dubai 10X initiative, which hopes to digitize the trade process in what has become known as the “Digital Silk Road.” Developed in collaboration with Dubai Customs and the cargo handling service DP World-UAE, the project is scheduled to go live in 2020.
The Digital Silk Road is not the first blockchain-based trade finance project to be developed in the UAE. In April 2019, local blockchain startup Perlin partnered with the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) to form the ICC Blockchain/DLT Alliance. The Paris-based ICC is now the world’s largest business organization, boasting 45 million members. The partnership with Perlin reportedly represents the single largest exposure of blockchain technology to global business, reaching companies in 130 countries around the world. The Dubai Chamber of Commerce officially joined the project in June this year.
The Bank Trust Network
The Dubai telecommunications service provider Du has partnered with Avanza Innovations to develop the country’s first financial document exchange platform based on blockchain technology. The platform is built on Du’s proprietary “Blockchain Platform as a Service,” a shared environment that was created last year to host blockchain-based proof-of-concepts put forward by companies hoping to adopt the technology.
The document exchange platform, dubbed the “Bank Trust Network,” will serve as a means for banks and other financial institutions to safely and securely share digital paperwork. Historically, it’s been challenging to share sensitive financial information over telecommunications networks due to the high potential for fraud or interception.
The nature of a blockchain-based system provides a network that is intrinsically resistant to corruption, theft or alteration. Going paperless also helps Dubai to stick to its environmental commitments and sustainability goals.
The first customer to join the Bank Trust Network was the independent investment and financial services firm Finance House. Headquartered in Abu Dhabi and with offices in Dubai, the company is recognized as one of the first independent financial firms to be established in the United Arab Emirates.
National Bank of Fujairah joins Marco Polo
In September 2019, Dubai’s National Bank of Fujairah (NBF) joined the international blockchain-based trade finance network Marco Polo. Launched in 2017, the network brings together some of the leading financial institutions and technology giants in the world, including Mastercard, Natwest, Microsoft, Oracle and Bank of America.
Created as a collaborative effort between blockchain development firm R3 and open finance platform TradeIX, the Marco Polo network has proven to be an impressively fast-growing trade and capital finance network. Developed on the popular and highly successful R3 Corda enterprise blockchain technology, the network is focused mainly toward large corporate clients but can support small- and medium-sized businesses too. The central part of its application software, the Marco Polo Platform, is built and licensed through TradeIX’s open framework, making it more easily accessible and customizable for clients.
NBF’s head of global transactions services, Subramanian Krishnamurthy, noted how the partnership complements the bank’s desire to explore emerging technologies such as blockchain:
“We are thrilled to join the Marco Polo Network and support the collaborative effort to create and advance these new technologies in the trade finance ecosystem. As a dedicated financial partner, we will continue to leverage forward-thinking platforms that respond to our clients’ needs, enhance their customer experience and add value to their businesses.”
The platform is a powerhouse of distributed technology for both trade and supply chain finance, offering products to support receivable discounting, factoring and payment commitment. The open model means any member can develop and improve upon the system, with the benefits of distributed ledger technology creating a real-time flow of data connectivity that reduces typical failure points.
As a member of the Marco Polo network, the National Bank of Fujairah has access to the Universal Trade Network, an international initiative created by Marco Polo with an aim to develop blockchain trade finance standards. The network hopes to improve interoperability between global blockchain networks from around the world.
Etisalat and First Abu Dhabi Bank
In July 2019, the Abu Dhabi-based telecommunications giant Etisalat Digital partnered with First Abu Dhabi Bank and Avanza Innovations to develop a blockchain-based trade finance platform called UAE Trade Connect. Developers hope to leverage the immutability of blockchain technology to fight invoice fraud and eliminate the problem of double financing.
The Middle East and North Africa region reportedly has the second-highest rejection rate for trade finance applications. While still in its early development stages, the UAE Trade Connect platform hopes to eventually develop solutions to these issues with the additional integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning.
So far, the project has managed to sign up several major Middle Eastern banks, including Emirates NBD, Commercial Bank of Dubai, Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank, Mashreq, Rakbank and Commercial Bank International.
Digital marketplace for secondary trade market
Trade Assets is a Dubai-based blockchain marketplace launched in February 2019 as part of the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre, a “free zone” company initiative. The DMCC was formulated in 2002 by the government of Dubai to provide financial infrastructure and stimulate interest in the global commodities trade.
Since its inception, the Trade Assets platform has been adopted by RAK Bank in Dubai, Yes Bank in India, Banque Misr in Egypt and 22 Bangladeshi banks including Mercantile Bank, Dutch Bangla, Prime Bank and Dhaka Bank.
Related: Middle East Blockchain Development Primed to Lead the Global Industry
The marketplace aims to provide a platform through which banks can capitalize on the $1 trillion secondary trade market that exists due to the limited amount of trade finance banks are willing to carry on their books, as less-desirable portfolios are often sold to make space for newer clients. While this can be a profitable exercise for both sellers and buyers, it is also a disorganized and time-consuming process.
The Trade Assets platform aims to reform the slow and antiquated system that currently supports the secondary trade market with a blockchain-based digital marketplace. The solution offers a fast, highly secure and transparent system that is accessible to all and easy to integrate into any existing framework.
Co-founder and chief marketing officer Sumit Roy, an ex-Deutsche Bank exec, is optimistic about the company’s future. He believes it has a good chance of attracting a wealth of initial clients and will achieve recovery of investment by the end of its third year of operation.
According to a press release on the launch, he said: “Trade Assets will offer exceptional economies of scale and ROI and will acquire over 100 clients in 2 years, aiming to reach $1 billion in transaction volumes.”
The Silsal shipping and logistics blockchain
Abu Dhabi Ports subsidiary Maqta Gateway launched its Silsal blockchain project in October 2018 with the intention to provide greater security, transparency and efficiency. The project was tested in collaboration with major shipping and logistics company Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) to evaluate its capabilities.
The Belgian Port of Antwerp was one of the first international ports to partner with Maqta Gateway and MSC to test the Silsal blockchain.
With the creation of the project, Maqta Gateway envisioned a system that can support the seamless exchange of shipping documentation between multiple international ports securely and autonomously. In addition to documentation exchange, the Silsal blockchain gives port authorities the ability to record transaction details on a digital ledger that is transparent and accessible across the trade industry.
Just a tip of an iceberg
While the above represents a large section of the UAE’s blockchain enterprises, it is in no way a comprehensive list. In the first quarter of 2019 alone, UAE-based blockchain startups raised $210 million, making the country the largest beneficiary of blockchain investment in the world.
Now, with favorable crypto legislation, are we are likely to see the UAE emerge as a leading blockchain nation in 2020? Miles Paschini, founder and director of crypto investment app B21, commented to Cointelegraph that:
“Clear regulation will enable this jurisdiction to be in a good position to become a regional leader. With this said, the devil is in the details, regulations can’t stifle innovation. This will be a delicate balance of allowing innovation to occur while protecting consumer and sovereign interests.”
