I was just reminded that 2019 is the International Year of Indigenous Languages, which is a great time to recommend to all of you the documentary We Still Live Here - Âs Nutayuneân about the revitalization of the Wampanoag language. If you’re interested in indigenous languages and/or language preservation and revitalization, I highly suggest checking out—it’s one of the most interesting and important documentaries I’ve ever watched, and more people should know about the amazing work done by Jessie Little Doe Baird to bring Wampanoag back.

You can watch the trailer and purchase the film for personal use here (though you might also be able to find it at a library, my university’s library has a copy which is where I first watched it.)

A good documentary to watch today:  We Still Live Here - Âs Nutayuneân
This is about Jessie Little Doe Baird, a Wampanoag linguist, and her amazing efforts to revive a dying language. When people talk about the “Thanksgiving Indians” these are the people they mean. And what we don’t like to talk about is that after they saved the settlers’ asses, things got really shitty for them, and they’re still dealing with the effects today. For reasons you can probably guess, there were no living native speakers of the Wampanoag language when Jessie Little Doe began her work. But these people are so fucking awesome and resilient that they’re bringing it back anyways!
Watch it here
But if can, you should rent it from producer’s website and check out their other films. They do real good stuff.
