Chapter 8: And I'm begging you
Eddie Diaz felt like he might genuinely pass out. He had thanked the doctor before it even really hit him. Buck was alive, but it was more than that. The pup they didn’t even know existed was fine as well. The alpha felt like he had forgotten how to breathe. His lungs were tight as reality sank in. His omega was pregnant. They weren’t out of the woods, but they were okay for now. He was going to be a dad again. And this time with his bonded mate. Bonded. He focused on his bond and let it calm him. He could feel that Buck was alive. He could feel it in his very soul. It was like a balm for his frayed nerves. The tension finally eased inside him. He could relax some, but it was short-lived as Maddie sank down beside him and began sobbing. The alpha squashed down his feelings and turned his focus to his mate’s sister.
“This is all my fault,” she cried. “He...you, both of you, almost lost your pup because of me.”
“That is not true,” Eddie hugged her.
Maddie shook her head. “But it never would have happened if I hadn’t come here.”
“The second your number was in Buck’s hand, the decision was made,” Eddie stated as he pulled back to look at her. “He was always going to try and find you. He was always going to want to save you. He was never going to leave you to suffer, not if he could do anything about it. He’d have walked through hell if it had given him the chance to have his sister back in his life. And no one in this pack would have stopped him. I sure as hell wouldn’t. And at least half the pack would have been right there with him.” Eddie told her. “I’d have been right there with him, ready to kick that psycho’s ass.”
“He was trying to protect me.”
“And he’d do it again. I’d do it again. You are family. Our family. None of us hold any of this against you. No one. This is Doug’s fault and your parents'. Your parents helped him find you. And Doug wasn’t just going to let it go. No fancy alarm system or legal system was going to keep him from you. That knothead took everything from you once. He came back to do it again. If he couldn’t have you, then no one could. If he couldn’t be happy, then no one should be. He wanted to hurt you in every way possible. He knew the only thing you cared about was your brother. Your parents were just a means to an end. Your parents wanted control. They wanted you both to owe them. Their reputations meant more than their kids. And that’s unbelievably messed up. I’d die for my son, my…my kids. I’ve only known we’re having another one for a few minutes, and I’d already do anything to make sure they make it into this world safe. I thought Shannon leaving Christopher was the worst thing a parent could do. What parent abandons their own flesh and blood, right? Bond or no bond. Turns out, I was wrong. Staying and putting the kids through hell because the parents chose to stay, chose to keep the kid, and it didn’t end up the way they wanted it to. Now that’s the worst thing a parent can do. I never thought I would think of Shannon leaving as a thing of mercy. Granted, I would have torn her to pieces if she did what your parents did. That’s assuming my mom and my sisters didn’t beat me to it. I may have a different pack now, but they still care. They knew I needed a change and that I needed to do what was best for Christopher. The best thing for me. That what Shannon did tore at every part of what kept us in Texas. But I still love my family. My dad can be an asshole, but I would relive every lecture, every disappointment if it meant getting me back here. I’d do it all a thousand times just to have this chance. It was a twisted act of fate that got me to LA. Got me to this pack. That brought your brother into my life. And I thank God every day that he decided to stay. I don’t deserve it, but I don’t think I could live without him. Without them. And he wasn’t going to live any longer without you. So now,” Eddie said as he took her hand and squeezed it. “Now we are going spend every damn day being grateful that he’s still here. We’re going to take care of him and get him back on his feet, even if he insists he can do it on his own. We will, as a family, as a pack. No more looking over your shoulder, waiting for the other shoe to drop. No more hiding. You can stay with us. We can find you your own place. We’ll figure it out. But you’re stuck with us.” His last statement earned a laugh from the beta.
“You keep wondering why Evan chose to stay, why he would want to be part of your pack, your family,” Maddie started. She felt the alpha tense up and squeezed his hand back. “But honestly, I don’t think you give yourself enough credit, Eddie. You look at my brother like he hung the moon. You get this smile when you talk about him. Hell, most of us can tell when you’re just thinking about him.” Eddie’s cheeks tinted red at that. He hadn’t realized how obvious he was. Most of the other laughed but as embarrassing as it was, he didn’t really care. “He’s your mate,” Maddie continued. “That’s how it’s supposed to be. It’s supposed to be like you can’t breathe without them. It just took me too long to realize there is a difference between not being able to breathe because you love someone with every part of you and a panic attack because you don’t know when they get home if they’ll be angry and take it out on you. Or that if you drop a plate, you’ll be-”
“Never again, you don’t have to go through that ever again. You heard Athena.” Eddie nods over at said alpha. “Things are better already. Doug can’t hurt you or Buck. Your parents can’t either.”
“Not on my watch,” Athena added. “Or any of my patrol officers either.”
“If someone comes after one of us, they face all of us,” Bobby stated.
“And we’ll gladly help pick up the pieces,” Hen agreed.
“Yeah, what they said,” Chimney stated, earning a laugh from Maddie and an eye roll from Eddie. “What? Everyone else already covered it all. That’s what packs do. The good ones, at least.”
“And this is a good one,” Maddie admitted with a smile. “You guys have made Buck happier than I’ve ever seen him. Not even as a kid did he ever feel so at home. So loved.”
“And you?” Bobby asked.
“Me too. Him being happy makes me happy, but I almost don’t know what to do now. Doug is gone. Buck doesn’t need me.” She stopped them before they could protest that he did still need her. “Let me rephrase.” She chuckled and wiped at her tear-stained cheeks. She smiled at Chimney when he offered her one of the boxes of tissues that were scattered around the waiting room. “Thanks. What I mean is he doesn’t need me to hold his hand anymore. He’s got you for that.” She nudged Eddie’s knee. “Every skinned knee, every bump, and bruise, he’s got a support net that isn’t just me. And I know that he knows if I need something I can actually call now that I’m not isolated and alone anymore. Neither of us are. It’s a freedom I honestly didn’t think I’d ever get.”
“But you have it now,” Eddie nudged her back. “Today, tomorrow, forever.”
“See, that’s why Evan stays. You may not see it, but you saved him. You gave him a home where he can laugh and be himself. He doesn’t have to pretend to be something he’s not. He can say what he wants, eat what he wants, and be what he wants. He just wanted somewhere that feels like home, and you gave him so much more than that. All the things he ever wanted, you offered to him, he could have said no, he could have run, and you would have helped him. You told him yourself. You all would have fought the world for him, even if he had said no at the ceremony, even if he said no to a bond. You’d have fought our parents. You’d have helped him get out. If he had told you the minute, he met you or Bobby that he was hurt and scared. You’d both have put yourselves between him and our parents, even before he was pack. Because protecting an omega from their abusers is the right thing to do. Because you care about the well-being of strangers enough to risk your lives daily in your jobs. Part of me wishes you could see it from our point of view. Buck and I spent years not being able to trust anyone. We’d run away, we’d fight, and the authorities just brought us back. Alphas insisted to the other alphas that we’d be disciplined because we tried to defy the alphas in our lives. My dad, Doug, they’d always figure a way out of it. We couldn’t even trust the doctors to help us, and they wanted to. They kept us isolated, hidden. Until now.”
Eddie had to wipe at his own eyes now. He didn’t trust his own voice enough to reply, but he did offer his mate’s sister a teary-eyed smile. He looked over at where his abuela and tía were keeping Christopher busy. He hadn’t seen them much since the ceremony. Athena and Bobby had called them and explained it all to them. His heart felt like it might burst. He really did get lucky. It felt weird to be thinking that when his mate and pup weren’t out of the woods yet, but he had so many people he could rely on. He knew that if he called his mom, she would stay on the phone with him as long as he wanted. He knew she’d find a way to fly up here if he asked. His family loved him, his pack too. He smiled when they nudged Christopher his way. He hugged his son tight when he got to him.
“It’s going to be okay,” Christopher said. Eddie chuckled at how his son used the words he so often heard from Eddie, and Buck, back at him. He let his inner alpha take comfort in scenting his pup. Eddie carefully picked up Christopher.
“Come on, I got something Abuela and Tía Pepa are going to be excited to hear,” Eddie told him.
“Yeah? Do I get to hear?”
“Do you think I’d bring you over there and not let you?” Eddie asked, a grin tugging at the corner of his lips.
“I guess that’s true,” Christopher admitted. “Is it about our Buck?”
“It is, but not just our Buck,” Eddie said as he took the seat between the two women.
“So many smiles,” Isabel Diaz grinned. “Must be good news.”
Eddie nodded. “Buck’s stable. He’s not out of the woods, but he’s okay. They’re okay.”
“They?” Tía Pepa asked. “You mean-Buck is-”
“Yeah,” Eddie smiled. “Surprise.”
“Oh Edmundo,” his abuela smiled. “I’m so happy for you.” Christopher looked at them confused, earning a laugh from the older members of the Diaz family.
“You’re going to be a big brother, bud,” Eddie told him.
“Really?” Christopher asked. The look of pure joy on his face made Eddie feel like his heart was too big for his chest. God, he couldn’t wait to see Buck.
“Yeah, buddy,” Eddie said.
“Wow,” Christopher said.
Before Eddie could reply, a nurse came over. Tía Pepa was quick to take Christopher from him so he could talk to the nurse. Christopher was content to share his excitement about being a big brother with his family. Eddie was unbelievably grateful they were there.
“You’re Eddie, right? Evan Diaz’s mate, correct?” the nurse asked.
“Yes, I am,” Eddie answered. “Is he awake? Can I see him?”
“He has not woken up yet, but since he has remained stable, you can see him now,” She informed him, and glanced at the group. “We just ask you to keep it to two or three people at a time.”
“We can do that, of course,” He nodded, and the nurse told him the room number and left.
“Is Evan okay?” She asked as he neared them.
“She says we can go see him now, but only a couple at a time,” Eddie told them.
“You two go. We’ll let them know what’s going on,” Bobby said as he gestured to Christopher, Isabel, and Pepa.
“Thanks,” Eddie said.
Walking into Buck’s room nearly broke Eddie. The mix of relief at being near his mate mixed with the phantom itch of an injury that wasn’t his but of his bonded and sorrow at how pale and still Buck was. Maddie squeezed his shoulder before sitting beside her brother, taking his hand in hers like she had done so many times when he was in and out of medical facilities after presenting. It never seemed to get easier. Eddie moved to stand on the opposite side of the bed and took Buck’s other hand. His eyes scanned, checking the IV line and machines out of habit. His inner alpha was practically clawing inside him to get closer to touch more. He forced it down like he usually did, caving only enough to run his fingers through his mate’s hair. The alpha relaxed slightly that even in his drugged sleep the omega still leaned into the touch. Eddie had to close his eyes to keep it together.
“Eddie,” Maddie called to him. “You can give in, Eddie. No one will think any less of either of you, especially not me, if you do. He’s your mate.”
Eddie glanced at the door but ultimately agreed that she was right. That’s why he’s there, isn’t he? He gave into his alpha side. He grimaced at the sterile chemical scent the surgery had left Buck with. So he did his best to replace the scent and put all he had into his bond to try and coax his mate back awake. To help ease his mate back into the conscious world. He buried his face into Buck’s neck, trying to find the scent that always drew him in. He nearly cried when he found it. Even with the lingering smell of the sterile environment, he let it soothe him. Buck was still very much there, alive and breathing. He stayed there until he felt a weak hand on his neck.
“Welcome back, little brother,” Maddie said.
Eddie could feel the groggy hum of an answer from the omega, earning a breathless chuckle from the alpha. He carefully took the hand on the back of his neck and held it between his own, and pulled back to get a look at his mate. Maddie smiled at them as he did.
“Gave us all a scare, Ev,” Maddie continued. “I was pretty sure you alpha here was going to pass out a time or two when the adrenaline wore off.” Buck’s look of confusion shifted to concern as he tried to sit up further from the raised bed.
“Hey, easy,” Eddie said as he gently got in Buck’s space to stop him from struggling to move. “It’s okay. We’re okay, just relax. Everyone’s okay, right Maddie?” Eddie glanced at her.
“Yes, Evan, everyone’s okay. It was just a joke. Everyone that matters is fine. Eddie’s fine, Christopher is-”
Eddie didn’t miss the way the omega’s heart rate spiked, causing one of the machines to alert at the mention of their son. “Chris is okay. He’s good. He’s with Abuela and Tía Pepa, and they're out with the rest of the pack. They’re okay. He never even saw Doug, and…well, even your mom isn’t dumb enough to hurt him. It’s okay. The only thing wrong with him is that he’s worried about his Buck, okay?” The alpha ran his fingers through the omega’s hair again to try and calm him. “I promise.” That seemed to put the omega at ease. “You’re the one that needs to be worried about.”
“I’m fine,” Buck managed to finally say, his voice coming out like it was dragged across sandpaper, making him wince. His sister grabbed a styrofoam cup of water and offered it to him. He thanked her after he managed to drink.
“Sure,” Maddie chuckled before looking at Eddie.
Buck’s brows furrowed as he looked between his sister and his mate. It was like the two were having a silent debate. “What…what is it? What-” His heart rate spiking again.
“It’s okay, Ev,” Maddie said as she stood up. “It’s okay, really, everyone’s okay. You’re okay, right alpha?” She looked at Eddie again and nodded.
Eddie nodded and ignored the emotions that seemed to clash in his chest. He had to clear his throat when he finally spoke. “You’re fine. You’re both fine.” The confusion on Buck’s face was clear. The alpha moved his hand to his mate's still flat stomach and repeated. “Both of you are alright.” Emphasizing the word both.
“Eddie…” Buck’s voice was barely above a whisper. “You mean…”
“You and the pup,” Eddie finally managed to say, his shaky voice nearly betraying him. Maddie watched as the heart monitor picked up again but didn’t spike dangerously high. “Congratulations, little brother,” Maddie said. She leaned in and kissed the omega’s forehead. “I’m going to let the others know you’re awake.” She smiled as she left.
“You’re serious?” Buck looked up at Eddie.
Eddie just stared a moment. He blinked and shook his head. “Do you really think this is the time or place for a joke, especially about this?”
“No, I just…” Buck looked down at the hand not still in Eddie’s grasp and picked at the edge of the blanket.
Eddie could feel the doubt, and so much more else seep into their bond.
“Buck,” Eddie said, one hand moving to the omega’s chin and tipping his gaze up ever so slightly. “Evan, I’m not joking, and I’m absolutely serious. I had no idea until the doctor told me that both of you were okay, fights not over, there are a lot of risks, and you have to let yourself heal, for both of you. And you’re going to have to,” Eddie said with a smirk. “Because Christopher is out there already making a million plans with Abuela about teaching his little brother or sister everything he knows. So you’re going to let me, and everyone else, take care of you, even if you hate it.”
A snort of laughter from the omega turned into a slight groan at the ache in his stitched side. The alpha moved to comfort and soothe him but was waved off, only easing off when Buck smiled. “Having my every need taken care of by my devoted alpha, oh whatever will I do, sounds like such a hardship.”
The alpha couldn’t help but laugh. “I’m sure you’ll suffer through it,” Eddie grinned, running his fingers through his mate’s hair. The satisfied hum of approval as the omega leaned into it made Eddie’s inner alpha finally settle into place, confident that things were well on the way to being alright.
“Only for you, Alpha,” Buck said, his voice sleepy as Eddie continued to gently run his fingers through the omega’s blonde locks.
Eddie could tell Buck was tired and would probably fall back asleep soon but one question buzzed at the back of Eddie's mind. One he needed to hear the answer to our loud. One he couldn't just let himself assume he knew the answer to. "Buck," he started to ask.
"Hmm?" The omega slowly blinked up at him. It almost made Eddie not want to ask. Almost.
"You want this, right? A family with Christopher and me?"
Buck's brows furrowed. He thought he had made it clear from the start that he was all in with them. The fact they made a pup together should be obvious. "Eddie, why would you ask me that?"
"I know you're tired, and you just went through hell, but that's why I need to know. I need to know that I'm not being selfish for wanting this. That I should have waited and talked to you before I told Christopher. We didn't exactly plan this far ahead. I just don't want you to feel backed into a corner. I don't want you to feel like you have to do this because I do. You get a say in this too, in everything. I never want you to feel like you can't say no. Like what they-" Eddie was cut off by a hard tug to the front of his shirt as Buck pulled him down to crash their lips together. The alpha pretty much melted into it. He leaned his forehead against the omega's when they pulled apart for air. "I need to hear it, Buck, please."
"Of course, I want this. Us. A family. We are a family. Have been since day one. You're my mate by choice. A choice you gave me. You gave me an out that first night and so many more. But I don't want an out. I don't want to be anywhere but with you and Christopher. If my mother had…" Buck sniffled. The chaos of it all and his heightened emotions were starting to catch up to him.
"Don't think about that," the alpha was quick to comfort him. "The pack would have never let that happen. Maddie made sure of it. She didn't miss a beat. Bobby said she was in there to protect Chris without any hesitation. She'd have fought your mom. She'd probably have fought anyone, just like you didn't hesitate to take on Doug, even when it landed you here. And we both know you'd do it again. You'd walk through hell for Maddie. I would too because she is your sister and she loves you. And you love her. That is what a family is supposed to do. That is what a pack does."
"And that is all I want. A pack, a family, with you," Buck said, putting every ounce of want and love into their bond. Eddie nearly collapsed from the sheer weight of love and relief he felt. He hadn't realized the tears of relief and joy he felt had fallen until Buck carefully wiped them away.
"It's okay. You said it yourself. We're okay. All of us are okay," the omega said, tugging at him again until he laid down next to him. The alpha didn't put up a fight. He just carefully tucked himself into his omega's less injured side.
“Rest, Omega,” Eddie assured him. “We’re not going anywhere.”
"Funny, I was just about to say the same to you, Alpha. I can feel you're almost as exhausted as I am."
"Well, I had to fight a psycho in my kitchen after trying to take my family from me. It was kind of an exhausting day."
"And you saved us. You did good," Buck said.
"You know I would die for you, both of you," Eddie told him, his hand moving to rest on the omega's stomach. "Now that I have you both, nothing short of God himself can drag me away. And even then, I'd probably still put up one hell of a fight."
"That makes two of us, but maybe we should avoid trying to die for a little while. I think we both need some sleep, and Christopher-" It was Eddie's turn to close the distance and kiss his mate.
"You're right. You need to heal, and to do that, you need sleep. I'm sure someone will bring Chris in soon, and then you'll try to fit him in this already too tiny bed, even if it hurts you, and then you'll start asking when we can go home." The alpha could feel the chuckle throughout the omega's body, and it warmed the alpha to the core. "So let's get a little shut-eye before that happens, yeah?"
"Okay," the omega agreed but couldn't resist adding, "Love you, Eddie."
"Love you too, Buck," Eddie easily replied, placing a gentle kiss on the bite mark that signified their bond before burying his face in the omega's neck. The action earned another chuckle from the omega as he leaned into the action. His hand found his alpha's, his mate's, where it rested on his stomach above where their tiny pup was growing. The emotions of it all were overwhelming and wonderful. He had his mate, one who loved him, and he loved with every ounce of his heart and soul. He has a son and another on the way. He had his sister, and they were both safe and free. He let the feeling of love and safety that Eddie put out lull him to sleep. Resting easy, knowing everything would get better because they'd face it together.

Chapter 7: My one last shot at redemption
Eddie had to resist the urge to pace the length of the sterile waiting room. They had taken Buck back to deal with his stab wound. He had spent some time attempting to scrub his mate's blood off his hands and was glad when Chimney handed him a change of clothes. His clothes were blood-soaked evidence. He wasn't sure the last time he was ever so glad to see the Chimney. The alpha had already given the police his side of the story. He had Bobby give them the footage from his security system. Now there was nothing else to do.
They were stuck waiting. Having his pack with him helped a bit, especially Christopher, but he wouldn't really be fine until he was back with his mate. The adrenaline from the fight was long gone, and the alpha was left with the dull ache of a fight, both his and Buck’s, and the fear of losing his mate. He'd waved off the medics and nurses, assuring them he knew what broken bones felt like, and he didn’t have any. He was a medic, after all. He knew he'd heal on his own. He wanted them to focus on his mate. He needed Buck to be okay. He just did.
He stood up as Maddie joined them. They had insisted she be looked over as well, despite her protests. Her injuries were minor, and the knife hadn't gone deep enough to require stitches. Eddie knew his omega would be glad to hear that. Buck always did everything he could to protect his family, at least the ones he genuinely felt love for. Eddie knew Buck would always prioritize Christopher, Eddie, Maddie, and the pack. That was all that mattered to the omega. Buck never put himself first. He had been put down as useless and a burden for so long that it had become second nature to the omega. It would drive Eddie's alpha side insane at times. His poor omega was so beautiful and deserved the world but had it completely denied to him. He could be a college athlete or anything, but instead, he was hospitalized by his psycho brother-in-law, and the omega was bound to an alpha who failed to protect him. He had tried everything he could think of, but it wasn't enough.
"He's a fighter, Eddie," Hen said as she sat down beside him. The beta had noticed Eddie's unease as he began overthinking everything. "I don't think he'd give that knothead the satisfaction of taking him out either. Nah, he'll be back and holding you and Maddie kicking the psycho's ass over him forever."
"He helped too," Eddie told her. "Buck was already bleeding and tried to get that asshole's attention off of Maddie. He was literally on the ground with a bleeding wound, and he was begging for a beating. And Doug gave it to him or at least tried. Buck used Doug's ego and arrogance against him. He kicked at Buck." Eddie could feel his fists clench as he spoke. Still itching to make the psychotic alpha that hurt his mate pay. He forced his fingers to flex and relax as much as he could. "And Buck saw his chance. He kicked out his legs, threw Doug off balance, and gave me a chance to get the knife away from that asshole. And Maddie intervened. She did what she needed to do."
"That omega has a fire in him now," Hen said as she nudged her packmate's shoulder.
"He really does," Maddie's approaching voice had the pair looking up. "Growing up, any fight he had was taken out of him by meds and well...our father," Maddie said sadly. "He never felt like he had anything to fight for. It was easier to just try and tough it out until he was old enough to get out. To just take the hits until it was over. But he is like a whole new Buck."
"Buck 2.0," Chimney added, earning a chuckle and nod from Maddie.
"He is so happy and has so much to live for," Maddie smiled at Eddie. "He loves you guys. He isn't going to give up easily. You saw him fight back. Something I was never strong enough to do until now. I wasn't going to let him take my brother away from me again."
"And he won't." They all turned to see Athena put her phone away. "The DA's been looking for someone stupid enough to make an example of why we need to fight more for beta and omega rights. You and your brother just landed him the king of stupidity in Doug Kendall. A true psycho alpha that showcases how archaic and aggressive alphas can't get away with horrible acts based on alpha status alone anymore. Doug might just end up the poster boy for toxic alphas and forced bonding.”
Eddie let out a pained noise at the reminder of how messed up their lives were. Maddie and Buck were coerced into bonds with lies. The results were polar opposites, but love makes fools of everyone, it seemed.
"That's not you, Eddie," Maddie assured him. "Buck knows that. We all do."
"Eddie, this situation just emphasizes that a claiming bite doesn't take away a person's autonomy,” Athena said, giving the male alpha’s shoulder a squeeze. “Maddie defied her bond to protect her brother. Proving that familial and pack bonds should play a bigger role in how the system defines people's rights. Relationships mean more than just bonded pairs," the sergeant added.
"But I-" Eddie started.
"But nothing, you didn't force him into anything. His parents did. And he stayed by choice. The DA sees Phillip and Margaret's arrests as practical icing on the cake for the cause. It sounds like a few people back east are even happy to fly out to help the DA shine the spotlight on this. Kids deserve better than that. They deserve protections that Buck and Maddie were denied as kids. Safety nets. Gender, primary or secondary, is not something a child should be punished for. No one should be hurt because of the way they were designed or the choices they make while they are trying to figure out who they are. Mind, body, and spirit should be allowed to grow and thrive in a loving and caring environment. No kid should go through what he did. Their lawyer’s already looking to cut a deal, but I'm sure the DA will make sure they get what they deserve. The office isn’t too keen on child or omega abuse, and those two doubled down on it. When Buck wakes up, he'll be living in a world where things lean towards getting better."
"God, I hope so," Eddie admitted.
Almost an hour later, a doctor approached them. Eddie and Maddie went to meet him. “Evan is stable, but there is something you need to know. You may want to sit down for this...”

Chapter 6: Oh how we regret those things we do
The next few weeks were nerve-wracking for the Buckley siblings. As much as the pack tried to reassure them, they always felt like they were looking over their shoulder and waiting for an ambush. Bobby and Eddie had upgraded the Diaz house home security system. The pack spent more time together since there was safety in numbers.
Eddie was helping Christopher with his homework when he heard shouting and then felt something he’d never felt before, a sort of phantom pain in his side that made it hard to breathe for a moment. It set every alarm bell off in his mind and had his inner alpha snarling. "Close the door and do not open it for anyone but pack," the alpha told his son. Eddie hit the silent alarm in his phone that connected to his pack and rushed towards the front of the house. The alarm would send out a message to all of them. The alpha's blood boiled at the sight he found when he reached the kitchen. Buck was clutching his bloodied side as Doug held Maddie at knifepoint. Margaret Buckley standing off to the side. Eddie moved to reach his mate, to help Maddie, to do anything really but was stopped by a shout from Doug and a pained sob from Maddie.
"Don't," Doug spat.
"If you do this, if he dies, there isn't a place you could go that I won't find you," Eddie growled.
"Then maybe I'll just kill you too," Doug said with a smirk. "Really traumatize that broken mutt of yours."
"Doug," Maddie said, causing the abusive alpha to drag the knife tip closer, drawing a line of blood as he did.
"No!" Buck shouted.
"Shut it!" Doug demanded, moving to try and kick Buck. The knife pulled away from Maddie as he did.
Buck saw his chance. The omega used what leverage he had to kick Doug. The act caught the knife-wielding alpha by surprise, giving Maddie a chance to get away. She rushed to her brother. That was all the opening Eddie needed. His inner alpha and his military training took over with ease. He lunged at Doug before he could fully recover from what happened. He grabbed Doug's wrist and smashed it against the counter causing Doug to lose grip on the knife. Eddie kicked the knife away and moved to twist Doug's arm, but the other man had finally begun to put up a fight. Eddie didn't let up. He was about to slam his knee into the intruder's side when Doug froze. Eddie looked up to see Maddie standing over both of them. The knife driven deep into Doug's side. Eddie shoved the other alpha off of him and got to his feet.
"You okay?" He asked Maddie quickly. She nodded. Eddie looked down at Doug, grabbed another knife from the block on the counter, and hands it to Maddie. "Don't take your eyes off of him. He moves, do it again." Maddie nodded again.
Eddie grabbed a first aid kit from the cupboard and dropped down beside his mate. "Fuck," he stated as he finally looked at Buck's injury. "This is going to hurt like hell," the alpha said as he put pressure on the wound. His actions earned him a pained whine from the omega.
Noises and a shout drew the alpha's attention. Doug was trying to get to his feet. Eddie was about to move when the front door crashed open and Athena was there. Her gun drawn. Bobby at her side. Everything moved faster after that. Bobby called it in as Athena secured the scene. Maddie ran to get Eddie's full med kit from the hall. Doug froze as Athena stood over him with her gun pointing at him.
"Don't even think about it," Athena said.
Bobby's phone was pressed to his ear as he talked to 911 dispatch as he grabbed a dishcloth and knelt down. He pressed the cloth into the man's stab wound, not really bothering to be too gentle about it.
Maddie rushed over and dropped down beside Buck and Eddie.
"I'm sorry, Buck. I'm so sorry," she sobbed.
"'S fine, Mads," Buck managed as Eddie did everything he could to patch his mate up as best he could. Maddie froze as she looked around the room.
Despite the chaos, Eddie caught the shift in her scent. "Maddie?" The alpha looked up at her.
"She's gone."
"What?" Eddie asked, glancing around before it registered what she had meant. Margaret Buckley was gone. Eddie's eyes went wide. "Christopher!" He shouted and Bobby took off down the hall. Maddie on his heels.
Maddie froze in the doorway. Margaret Buckley was sat on the boy's bed, a confused and scared Christopher beside her.
"This is not how this was supposed to go," Margaret Buckley said. "Evan was supposed to be grateful. We found him a mate."
"Mom," Maddie said as she eased around Bobby. The prime's hand moved to stop her but Maddie shook her head, and gave his hand a quick squeeze. She moved into the room. They had no idea if Margret had a weapon or not. "Let Christopher go."
"Evan was always so difficult," Margaret continued.
"Difficult? He did everything you guys ever told him to. You medicated him until it nearly killed him, took him away from his friends, from me."
"You left," Margaret said, her eyes narrowing at her daughter.
"You want Buck to be grateful, then let his son go," Maddie stated as she eased closer to Christopher. The sound of sirens in the distance got closer. "If you care for Evan at all, even the slightest, you'll let Christopher go."
When Margaret didn't seem to try to stop her Maddie went over and got Christopher off the bed. Bobby was quick to scoop up the boy and take him to the hall but made sure to keep his line of sight on Maddie. The prime was thankful when Chimney and Hen appeared in the hall. Hen was quick to take Christopher into his master bedroom to try and shield the boy from the chaos. The boy was crying but Bobby knew he was in good hands.
"I never wanted any of this," Margaret said, drawing the prime's attention back to the small bedroom.
"No, but you didn't stop it either," Maddie stated.
"Your father-" the mother started but Maddie wasn't having it.
"My father thought his son deserved to be punished for things he can't control. Do you think if Buck could have changed from an omega by sheer force of the will he wouldn't have? Do you think he enjoyed being drugged and abused? He would crawl into my bed at night and sob. You want him to be grateful, you should have called the cops the first time dad hit him. You should have told the doctors the truth. You should have done something!" Maddie shouted. "No, you earned his loathing. You let him live every day filled with pain and fear. He owes you NOTHING! I owe you nothing. I have spent my whole life picking up the broken pieces of Buck's life. I'm just glad I no longer have to do it alone." Maddie looked over at Bobby. "I hope the control and the lies you lived were worth it because the world now gets to see what Buck and I always knew. You are the monsters we grew up fearing. The ones that haunt our nightmares. We won't let you hurt us anymore." Maddie held her head high and refused to back down until she felt a hand on her shoulder. Bobby had moved into the room to let the police officer in to deal with Margaret.
"Christopher?" She asked.
"Hen has him," Bobby assured her. "You did good. Let's go check on your brother."

Chapter 5: I fought you for so long
Athena could see the pair as she drove up to the Diaz home. She could see the woman that was Buck’s mother pounding on the door. The sergeant turned into the driveway and got out of her cruiser. Another cruiser pulled up along the curb.
“I think it is pretty obvious that no one is home,” Athena said as she approached the pair. She had to remind herself to stay professional. The two officers that had been in the other car stepped up behind the female alpha.
“Oh Athena, I am glad you’re here,” Margaret Buckley said. “This is my son-in-law, Doug. We are here to see Maddie.”
“No one is here,” Athena told her. “All you’re doing is making a lot of noise and upsetting the people that actually live in this neighborhood.”
“She’s here. She just won’t answer,” Doug stated.
“Doug was it,” Athena said, lowering her sunglasses and studying him over the edge. “Doug Kendall?”
“Yes, and I know my wife is here.”
“She really isn’t,” Athena said.
“How the hell would you know?” He glared.
“It is my job to know,” Athena stated.
“Athena,” Margaret Buckley approached the sergeant with a smile. “I just want to make sure my daughter is alright. She should be at home with her family.”
“She is with her family,” Athena told them. “She is with her brother and his pack. My pack,” Athena emphasized the connection.
“She is my wife,” Doug stated.
“And she isn’t here. So you need to leave, both of you.” Athena left no room for argument.
“This is ridiculous,” Margaret complained. “You’re telling me I cannot see my own children.”
Athena bit back a sigh. “The protection order that was granted to the Diaz family against you and your husband after your husband shoved his way into this very house and threatened not only your son and his mate, but spewing lies and hate while he did.” Athena squared her shoulders. “Margaret Buckley, you are not welcome at this house, and if you do not vacate the premises, then you will be removed.”
“This is bullshit. Where is my wife?” Doug spat.
“Your wife does not want to see you,” Athena retorted. “And if you know what is good for you, Mr. Doug Kendall, you will go home and never come back.”
“Is that a threat?” Doug took a step towards the female alpha.
Athena held her hand out as the officers moved to defend their sergeant if needed. “Not a threat, Mr. Kendall. The people who live here do not want you here. That’s why they called us. I’m advising you to leave before you force my hand. I have read a large file with your name on it filled with domestic violence calls, incidence reports, and medical reports. Now I will say this one last time, Mr. Kendall, Mrs. Buckley, the family that lives in this house, all four of them, do not want you here. So I am respectfully requesting you vacate the premises." Her alpha side was gnawing away at her as she spoke, but Athena knew better than to give an alpha like Doug Kendall any leeway. He was a snake. Her life as a female alpha, as well as a law enforcement officer, had taught her how to keep her alpha in check. She knew a level head, and a professional manner would protect herself and her pack better than lashing out would. It was a hard-learned lesson that had served her well. She would fight every alpha instinct she had to if it meant the Diaz family and Maddie were safe. Granted, just being there and doing her job soothed her alpha some. They can't hurt her pack if they can't get near them.
"Athena," Margaret started, "I am sure this is all-"
"A misunderstanding?" Athena said, shaking her head as she pulled out her phone. She dialed a number.
"Athena, hey," Eddie's voice rang through the speaker.
"Eddie, you're on speaker. I am standing at your door-"
"Where is my wife?" Doug snapped. Athena didn't miss the growl from her packmate on the other end of the line.
"As I was saying, they think there is some kind of misunderstanding," Athena stated.
"Edmundo," Margaret interrupted.
"Well, the DA filed an emergency protection order against Margaret and Phillip Buckley already, so you have my permission as the homeowner to do what you have to. As for Kendall, I don't want him on my property. Maddie sent him divorce papers already, a restraining order too, so he needs to be gone."
"You mother f-" Doug started but was stopped by Margaret dragging him towards the street. "This isn't over!" He shouted as he got in his car. Athena shook her head.
"Keep an eye on those two," Athena told the officers as she double-checked that Eddie's door was secure. "They're leaving," Athena said as she switched the phone off speaker.
"For now," Eddie scoffed. "We both know they aren't smart enough to stay away."
"Well," Athena said as she got into her cruiser. "We'll deal with that when we get there. They are on PDs radar now. I'll make sure the paperwork is clear that they are violating all sorts of orders being here."
"Thanks, 'Thena."
"Anytime, Eddie."
Eddie walked back into the station’s break area.
"Athena got them to leave," the alpha said as he sat beside Buck. He felt the omega's tense muscles relax some as he leaned into Eddie's side. The alpha rubbed his omega's shoulders.
"That's good," Maddie said. "I'm sorry I dragged you guys into this." Buck opened his mouth to argue, but Eddie beat him to it.
"Nothing to be sorry about," the alpha assured her. "You're pack, you're family, we look after our own. I'd kick the ass of anyone that hurt my sisters. You're Buck's sister, which means you're stuck in that group now too." Eddie grinned. "I will happily fight every shitty person in either of your lives." Eddie chuckled when a hand smacked the back of his head. He looked up to find that hand belonged to Hen.
"Probably just get you locked up along with them," Chim said as he set a cluster of water bottles on the table for the group.
"No one is physically fighting anyone, not if we can avoid it," Bobby stated as he approached the group. He'd gotten Christopher set up with a snack watching cartoons.
"As tempting as it might be," Hen added.
"I'm serious. As long as they are around, it is all hands on deck." Bobby was taking this very seriously. His pack's safety was at stake. "The last thing we need is someone in lock up. They will try something, manipulative behavior is their specialty. We are attempting to handle this by the book, but you know how it goes. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst."
"You really think it will get that bad?" Chim asked.
Buck and Maddie exchanged a look before nodding.
"But we will deal with it, as a pack," Bobby assured.

Chapter 4:  Apart from this whole world that shares my fate
Maddie Kendall hadn’t seen her brother in years, not since her wedding. She was going to change that. She was done with the situation she had found herself in. She had secretly planned the whole thing. She slowly packed a few things, in a suitcase hidden under the bed. Slow enough that he wouldn’t notice. She bought a plane ticket using cash she’d hidden away. One day she was there, the next day gone. She didn’t tell a single person what she was doing. It was safer that way.
So had told her brother she’d visit him but it was safer for him to not know when. She raised her hand to knock.
“Can I help you?” The man who answered the door said.
“Are you Eddie?” She asked.
“Who is asking?” The man asked, eyes narrowing slightly.
“I know I didn’t exactly give you guys advanced-,” She started to explain but was interrupted.
“Maddie?” Buck hurried to the door. “What are you doing here? How did you get here?”
“Yeah, Ev. It’s me” Maddie smiled. “I told you I’d visit. Sorry I couldn’t give you the heads up.” Before she could say anything else she found herself in a bone-crushing hug from her little brother, earning a laugh.
“Eddie,” Buck said when he finally pulled back from the hug, taking his sister’s hand in his own, he turned to his mate. “This is my sister, Maddie. She…she pretty much raised me after…”
“Nice to meet you, Maddie.” Eddie smiled, offering his hand to shake.
“Likewise.” Maddie smiled back.
“Let’s go inside.” Buck ushered his sister inside. Eddie brought her bag inside.
“I’ll just take this to the spare room. You can stay as long as you’d like.” Eddie nodded.
“Thank you, Eddie.”
“He isn’t here is he?” Buck asked.
Maddie shook her head. “No, I…I got away.”
“For good?” Buck asked. “Please tell me you left that asshole for good.”
She rubbed at the jagged scar of a mark on her neck. “I don’t plan on going back willingly.”
“We can help you,” Buck looked at her, eyes full of hope. “You can stay here, we can find you a job. Eddie’s pack is great, they-“
“Our pack.” Eddie corrected as he joined them.
Buck shook his head and laughed. “Our pack. They’re really great.”
“They took care of Dad,” Maddie said.
“You aren’t mad about that are you?” Buck asked, suddenly nervous.
“Evan, they treated you horribly. Hurting you hurts me. He can’t hurt you anymore.” Maddie smiled. “That makes me happy. I’m sorry I couldn’t be there for you.”
“Don’t worry about that. You had your own issues to deal with.” Buck tried to reassure her.
“My situation was my own fault. I ignored every warning sign until it was too late, or at least I thought it was too late.”
“It’s never too late,” Eddie said.
“I see that now.” Maddie nodded. “I couldn’t see a way out until I got the call from you.” She smiled at her brother. “He made sure that I didn’t have anyone. No one could help me, but you called and I knew I might finally get a chance. So I saved up and packed as much as I could without being obvious. Got a one-way ticket with cash, and here I am.”
“Well, I’m glad you’re here.” Buck hugged her. "Hey, there is someone I want you to meet." The omega led her into the living room. Christopher looked up as they walked in. He smiled at Buck as he made his way to him. "Hey, bud," Buck said. "I want you to meet someone very special to me, okay?"
"Okay," Christopher got up and Buck guided him to where Maddie was waiting with Eddie.
"Christopher, this is my sister, Maddie," Buck told him. The omega looked at his sister. "Maddie, this is our son, Christopher."
Maddie knelt down so she was on Christopher's level. "It is nice to meet you, Christopher." The boy smiled before hugging her. Maddie hugged him back, grinning. She was so happy for her brother. He finally had the loving family he deserved.
Maddie had been staying with them for a few days. Eddie had been working and Buck had gone to pick Christopher up from school. Maddie was walking back from a quick trip to the grocery store when she froze.  She found a place to hide and pulled out her phone and called her brother.
“Don’t come home, Ev.”
“What’s wrong, Mads? Where are you?” Buck asked, worried about his sister.
“I’m heading as far from there as possible,” Maddie answered.
“Head to the firehouse,” Buck told her. “I’ll send you the address and meet you there.”
Maddie agreed. “Works for me.”
“Christopher? Buck? What are you doing here?” Eddie asked, meeting his family in the truck bay.
“Is Maddie here yet?” Buck asked, his eyes frantically looking around.
“No,” Eddie answered. “Buck, what’s going on?”
Buck was about to tell Eddie what little he knew when he heard his sister shout his name.
“Evan!” Maddie seemed a bit out of breath.
“Are you okay?” Buck asked, hugging his sister quickly before pulling away so he could look her over.
“I’m fine,” Maddie said. “But he found me.”
“What?!” Buck shouted. “How?”
“Mom,” Maddie answered.
“Whoa, wait what?” Eddie asked. “What did your mom do? Why are you guys here?”
“Sorry,” Maddie said. “I decided to walk to the market, it was a nice day and I’d figured I’d make dinner since you guys have been so nice to let me crash with you until I found someplace of my own. I saw a car across the street and I just felt this feeling of dread. Then I saw Mother approach the driver and when the driver got out it…it was Doug. How did she even know I was here? How did she even know how to contact him, or him her? He never let me talk to any of you.” Maddie’s hands were shaking as Buck took her hands in his. “I’m not going back, I won’t. I can’t. He’ll –“ She glanced at Christopher. “Punish me for running away.”
“You don’t have to go anywhere,” Eddie said, picking Christopher up and headed towards the stairs. “Follow me.”
“Everything alright?” Bobby asked, approaching them. Eddie had told them that Buck’s sister was staying with them, and things were going well. But, this didn’t look good at all.
“You might want to call Athena, we’re going to need her help,” Eddie said, settling his son on the couch.
“Hen, can you?” Bobby nodded to Christopher.
“Sure.” Hen nodded, sitting on the couch and helping Christopher find something to watch on TV while the adults spoke.
“Bobby, this is my sister, Maddie.” Buck introduced her. “Maddie, this is Bobby, he’s the Alpha Prime.” After a quick greeting, they told him what was happening. Maddie told them about what Doug was capable of and that he’d stop at nothing until she was his again.
“He’ll kill me for running,” Maddie admitted.
“He won’t get the chance,” Buck said. “Right?”
“Right,” Bobby said. Bobby excused himself to call Athena. A few minutes later he returned. “She’s going to take a few officers and head to the house. You guys can stay here while we figure everything out.”
“And if it takes longer than our shift?” Eddie asked.
“Then you can come with me,” Bobby said. “We’ll figure everything out.”

Chapter 2: But the beauty of grace is that it makes life not fair
Bobby Nash got off the phone and walked into the kitchen.
“How’s the new couple?” Athena asked as she sipped at her cup of coffee. Bobby sighed. “Well that doesn’t sound good.” The female alpha set her coffee down and leaned in.
“They’re okay, he still seems like the perfect omega for Eddie,” Bobby rubbed at his temples, a headache already starting.
“But?” Athena questioned. She knew there had to be more to the story.
“But apparently Evan’s parents are not who they said they were.” Bobby shook his head. “They didn’t give the kid an option, they forced him into it.”
“Oh, that must have destroyed Eddie.” Athena frowned. The female alpha was fond of Eddie. His son was friends with her son. The younger alpha was a devoted father and fiercely loyal pack member, which made anything that upset him a problem that she was going to look into.
Bobby nodded. “Tearing him up, but from what it sounds like Evan’s handling it all well. Eddie thinks he did something wrong, but Evan doesn’t. Evan apparently saw it as a way to get out of his abusive home and into a happy one. Chris loves him already, and it sounds like the feeling is mutual.” Bobby smiled. In his opinion Christopher deserved the world. The poor boy had been through so much in his sort life. Both Christopher and Eddie deserved someone loving to look after them, someone who would stay. Bobby just hoped that Buck really was that someone.
Athena mulled it over. “Get me their info and I’ll figure out what the hell is going on.” Bobby went to his home office and grabbed his copy of the agreement he’d made with the Buckleys and gave it to his wife.
“Thank you,” Bobby kissed her, he’d never get used to how lucky he felt to have the female alpha at his side.
“Let Eddie know I’m on it.” Athena nodded and went to get ready for work.
Eddie was on his way back to his room when his phone went off. It was a text from Bobby letting him know Athena was going to look into it. Eddie sighed with relief. If anyone could figure it out it was Athena. She was an alpha with unparalleled determination. He was always glad to have him on her side. He remembered something he forgot to tell the prime alpha when they spoke. He sent Bobby a message telling him that Buck had said he was from Pennsylvania. He felt so much better knowing they might actually be able to help Buck. He felt like the world no longer sat squarely on his shoulders. His pack had his back on this. He moved into the bedroom, taking a moment to just appreciate the sight of his mate, in his bed. He carefully sat on the side of the bed and ran his fingers through his mate’s hair. The omega leaned into the touch. Eddie leaned in and kissed his mate gently. When he pulled away the omega’s eyes blinked open.
“Good morning.” Eddie smiled down at his mate.
“Morning.” Buck mumbled, a smile taking over his features.
“Coffee’s on.” Eddie spoke as he stood up.
“Mmm, you say the sweetest things to me.” Buck said, earning a laugh from the alpha.
“Oh I’m just getting started.” Eddie grinned. “But first, breakfast.”
Eddie talked Buck through where to find all the things they’d needed to make breakfast. They worked together to make the fluffiest pancakes Buck had seen outside of a restaurant. While Eddie finished  the last few pancakes, he had Buck go to wake up Christopher.
“Christopher,” Buck spoke softly as he knelt beside the boy’s bed and gently brushed the hair from his forehead. “Time to wake up, buddy.”  Christopher yawned and rubbed his eyes as he woke up. “Good morning, little man.”  The omega smiled down at the boy.
“Buck?” Christopher reached up for his glasses.
“Yup, it’s me.” Buck helped the boy put his glasses on. Smoothing the boy’s mussed hair as he did. “Daddy’s making pancakes.” That seemed to wake the boy up, he was eager to get up and ready for his morning now. After helping the boy get ready for his day they went to the kitchen.
“Perfect timing.” Eddie smiled as he set the last plate of pancakes on the table. “Morning bud.” The alpha leaned down and placed a kiss on the top of his son’s head.
“Morning,” Chris said as he sat down at the table and eagerly dug into his pancakes. Eddie smiled and shook his head.
“Well done,” Eddie smiles, stealing a kiss from his mate. “He’s normally takes a lot longer to get him up and around.”
“Well, the promise of pancakes put some pep in his step.” Buck grinned.
“Give yourself some credit,” Eddie put a hand on the omega’s cheek, running a thumb across his cheekbone. “Being woken up by a loving omega is a wonderful way to start the day.” After breakfast they took Christopher to school.
Bobby’s was at the station when his phone rang, smiling when he saw his wife’s picture. “Hey, find anything?”
“Oh I found a lot. I had a friend out East do some digging and those two should be locked up and forgotten about. To think anyone would be dumb enough to move cross country but not even bother changing their names is beyond me.”
“Well, from what it seems their name means more to them than your actual kid, so I’m not really that surprised. What’d they find?” Bobby frowned, sure that his wife could hear it in his voice.
“The detective tracked down a doctor that had made a CPS complaint when they found out the family was moving, but they had already vanished, so it didn’t go anywhere. Apparently the Buckleys were memorable enough that nearly four years later and they still worry about Evan. Eddie wasn’t lying when he said they nearly killed him. They had him on anything and everything to try and hide what he was.” Athena balled her fists. Just thinking about the fact just a few days ago they sat in a room, laughing with these people was infuriating. “Kid spent three days out cold, they weren’t sure he’d wake up, let alone go on to live an even somewhat normal life. Apparently Phillip Buckley had laughed, like actually laughed, it stuck with the doctor. Said he couldn’t believe his son would be such a broken omega, useless. Acting like it was Evan’s fault and not the fact they ignored a bunch of warnings about years of medication on the kid. If he told Eddie even half of what this report says, then I’m not surprised Eddie freaked out. This shit isn’t parenting, Bobby. This is torture. Makes me wonder how his sister turned out.” Bobby grip was so tight on the pen he’d been using to write reports before the call that it snapped. He dropped the dripping mess and cursed. He grabbed a tissue to wipe the ink of his hand.
“You alright?” Athena asked.
“Broke a pen. “ Bobby admitted to his female alpha. He could almost hear his wife shaking her head on the other end of the phone.
“I’ll let you read it when I get home, but you’re really not going to like it.”
“Better to know now than have to find out some other way. The bigger question is do we let Eddie read it?” Bobby asked.
“That’s up to Eddie and Evan, I guess.” Athena sighed. “I gotta go.”
They exchanged a quick love you and goodbye. Bobby had to figure out what to do now.
That night, after Christopher was in bed Eddie and Buck were surprised when they heard a knock at the door. Buck froze, his body full of tension, late night visitors were never good for him. His parents had loved to randomly show up to make sure he was behaving.
“Stay here,” Eddie muttered, kissing his mate’s forehead before getting up and checking to see who it was. He let out a sigh of relief when he saw it was Bobby and Athena. “Hey, come on in.” Eddie said as he opened the door to the alphas. He took in the look on their faces and was instantly on guard. “What is it?”
“Why don’t you go get Buck and we’ll talk in the kitchen.” Bobby said, before leading his wife towards the kitchen.
Eddie went back to the living room. “Okay, please don’t be mad.” Eddie knelt down in front of the omega. He hadn’t expected them to get back to him so soon, let alone show up when they did.
“W-what’s going on?” Buck was trying not to panic. He had no idea what was going on.
“I called Bobby this morning, before you woke up. I told him what we talked about last night.” Eddie cursed himself when Buck seemed to shrink in on himself. He hadn’t checked with Buck to see if he was fine with more people knowing, but Eddie had needed to talk to someone. “Hey, no, Buck. Sweetheart,” Eddie took Buck’s face in his hands. “They’re your family now, you’re my mate, that makes you part of the pack. We look after each other.”
“We don’t think any less of you, kid.” Athena said from the doorway, startling the omega slightly.
“On the contrary, you survived stuff that you never should have had to.” Bobby tried to reassure the omega. “Eddie’s right, you’re part of our pack now, our family.”
“You…you don’t think I’m…broken?” Buck was failing to keep the fear out of his voice.
“Of course not.” Bobby wanted to go over and comfort the poor kid, but after reading the report he knew it was probably best if he kept a distance. He didn’t want to move too quickly and scare him. He may be the head of an alpha pack, but he hadn’t gotten there by scaring the other members. “Mind if we take a seat?” He figured letting the omega get a say in what happened would help.
“Sure, take a seat.” Buck said quietly.
“Thanks,” Bobby said, as Athena sat in a chair near the couch. Bobby grabbed a chair from the corner and brought it over. They didn’t want the omega to feel surrounded so they tried to give him plenty of room. Eddie found himself wondering how it was possible he ended up in such an amazing pack.
“It’s okay,” Eddie took his mate’s hands in his and moved to sit on the couch, sitting so that he was somewhat between Athena and Buck, a buffer that would hopefully make the omega feel better. Athena and Bobby understood the gesture. It wasn’t because he saw them as a danger, it was strictly to comfort his distressed omega. The alpha pair was proud of how well the younger alpha was handling it all. Bobby smiled as Eddie continued. “You remember Bobby’s wife, Athena, right?” He gestured to the female alpha beside him. The omega nodded. “Well, she’s a sergeant with the LAPD.”
“You…you looked them up, didn’t you?” Buck asked, sadness filling his tone.
Athena nodded. “Eddie was worried and wanted to make sure we knew what we were up against.” She pulled out a file folder from the bag she had brought with her. She set it on the coffee table. “We wanted to be transparent about what we found.”
“We wont show anyone else if you don’t want us to.” Bobby added. “It stays between just the four of us if that’s what you want. We’re responsible for keeping everyone safe.” Bobby gestured between Athena and himself. “We’re the head of the pack, and it might seem a bit invasive, but we just want to be able to make sure that we can protect you, all three of you.”
Buck was shaking. “So you know,” his voice was quiet, “all of it.” Bobby nodded. Buck let out a small sob. Eddie wrapped his arms around his mate, muttering words of comfort in both English and Spanish. When the omega seemed to calm down some Athena leaned forward, her elbows on her knees.
“Buck, I know this is a lot to handle but we want you to know something, okay? No one in our pack is going to judge you or think any less of you for any of this. We’re a family, we will help protect you. These people,” she gestured to the file. “They aren’t parents, they don’t deserve the title.” Athena shook her head. “You don’t have to ever see them again if you don’t want to.”
“Really?” Buck’s voice filled with hope. Eddie smiled and nodded.
“Like Bobby said, this may seem invasive, but we can use it to our advantage. The things they did to you, what they put you through were horrible. If they so much as come near you, Eddie or Christopher, well this is to make sure they don’t.”
“Like blackmail?” Buck asked.
“Restraining order.” Bobby corrected.
“Wait really? They said no one would believe me.” Buck knew a lot of what they told him was lies, but honestly, he was a bit relieved he seemed to have people in his corner now, ones that knew how to handle it.
“Of course they did,” Athena grumbled as she shook her head.
“Yes, really.” Bobby spoke. “If you want to we can make sure you get a restraining order. We have a friend that can help us out with that.”
“And, it’ll make sure they can’t come near me, near us. Chris’ll be safe from them, right?”
“Absolutely, restraining order or no restraining order, we’ll make sure they don’t get anywhere near your son. I’ll see to that.” Athena reassured the omega. She wasn’t about to let them hurt anyone else, let alone a kid in their own pack.
“I really am free from them,” Buck let out a bit of a manic laugh. He never thought he’d get this far. His parents had always found a way to hold power over him.
“It may not have been the ideal way of going about it, but yeah, you are. If they try anything, and I mean it Buck, you call me. They never had the right to do what they did. And you’re an adult now, you have a say in who you want in your life. They lost the right to have a say in your life when they forced you into something you had no say in. So if they try and visit, call, anything, you let us know.”
“Yeah, okay,” Buck nodded. “Thanks.”
“No need to thank us.” Bobby smiled.
“Yeah, we’ve got you, Buckaroo.” Athena grinned, laughing when the omega’s ears turned pink from the nickname. Oh yeah, that one was going to stick. They went to leave but Athena stopped and dug through her bag. “My friend back east managed to find something you might actually be happy to know about.” She smiled and handed him a folded piece of paper. “They managed to track down your sister.”  The paper had Maddie Kendall (Buckley) written on the top of it with a phone number and address on it. Buck jumped up and hugged the female alpha, tears of joy in his eyes. Athena hugged him back.
“You have no idea how much this means to me.” Buck sniffled when he pulled away from her.
“That’s what family does.” Athena smiled at the omega. “You two take care of each other, alright?”
“Of course,” Eddie nodded.
“Good.” With that the alpha prime and his mate said their goodbyes and left. Buck stared at the paper with Maddie’s info on it like it was precious metal. He’d always hoped he’d be able to find his sister again, but he had never had this much of a lead before. When Eddie got back from walking their visitors to the door he found himself nearly tackled with a hug. The alpha chuckled.
“Thank you, thank you so much.” Buck’s grip on Eddie was near bone crushing, and Eddie was more than happy to let it happen. He managed to wrap his arms around the omega and return the hug.
“I told you I’d take care of you. I made the same promises you did.” The alpha tipped his mate’s chin so that he could kiss him. “You aren’t alone in any of this, okay? All those people you met from the pack the other day. Yeah, they are on your side now. If you ask them for help, they’ll be there. That’s what we do, that is what a family does.”
“God, I love you.” Buck admitted.
The alpha’s face lit up. “Love you too.”
The next morning after they’d dropped Christopher off at school. The two of them sat on the couch. The piece of paper with Maddie’s number on it sitting in front of them. Eddie wrapped an arm around his mate’s shoulders. “I’m right here if you need me.” The alpha tipped Buck’s head to the side slightly and kissed the omega’s temple to emphasize his point. “Right here.”
Buck nodded and took a deep breath as he punched the number in his phone and hit the send button. He held his breath as he listened to the ringing. It rang twice before the call connected.
“This is Maddie,” the voice answered and Buck nearly sobbed.
“Mads?” The omega’s voice was shaky. Eddie held him a little tighter to try and give his mate any strength he could.
“Evan?” Maddie’s voice filled with surprise. “Evan, is it really you?”
“Yeah, Mads, it’s me.” Tears were now streaming down Buck’s face.
The siblings talked for over an hour. The alpha only letting go when he heard the omega laugh, he stayed close, just in case. He’d moved to the kitchen to make some sandwiches for lunch, he could hear the sound of his mate’s voice from the other room. Eddie thought his heart would explode from how happy Buck had seemed to talk to his sister. It had Eddie thinking he should call his own sisters, and probably his mom, and he’d have to invite his abuela over the next time he was off. He smiled to himself, his family would be so glad to hear he’d found someone that loved Christopher as much as he did, someone that wanted to be with them. The alpha looked up as Buck entered the room.
“Have a good chat?” Eddie asked, not surprised when Buck snaked his arms around him and hugged him from behind.
“The best.” Buck said, burying his face in the alpha’s neck.
“I’m glad to hear it.” Eddie smiled as he plated the finished sandwiches.
“Maddie’s going to try and visit in a few weeks.” Buck’s voice filled with excitement.
“That’s what the spare bedroom is for, visiting family.” Eddie grinned. “Chris’ll be so excited to meet her.”
“Thank you,” The omega mumbled against his neck.
Eddie chuckled. “We’ll have to invite Bobby and Athena over next week for dinner so we can properly thank them.” He felt Buck nod against him and he chuckled again. The alpha wiped his hands on a towel and reached up and ran his fingers through the omega’s hair. “But you need to eat.” Eddie said, moving to pull away from the younger male. He grinned at the whine his omega made as the alpha managed to extract himself. “You barely touched your breakfast, so please?” Eddie held the plate out for him.
“Well, since you asked nicely.” Buck grinned and took the plate.
“Thank you.” Eddie smiled, grabbing his own plate and they headed to the living to watch TV while they ate.
