Hey I'm mentally okay again! Time to post something unhinged but true and real to my heart.
I have a secret to confess to all of Tumblr.
I've been thinking about Habismal kissing nasty for almost two years now.
[ plaintext: I've been thinking about Habismal kissing nasty for almost two years now. ]
And its the most beautiful thing in the world. I think if you saw them not making out but definitely locking those lips in an extreme manner that would cause thermometer glasses in their vicinity to burst toxic mercury and any animals around to have courtship season come early-- your heart would undergo an orchestral, transcendant epiphany. Just pairs, pairs, everywhere, I love when things come in twos.
I want it to be Gross. I say this with love. Theres spit, there's blood and there's ass grabbing. It is still the most enchanting and magical thing, like a butterfly with iridescent wings flying on a clear day, and oh, the sky goes on forever. If any homophobes saw them in the park bench being a public disgrace then it's THEIR RIGHT to do so, HELLO. So a laser will shoot that bitch into the nearby duck pond. Even a 24 platoon army could not stop Habit from appreciating Kamals generous&bountiful backcheeks. It's so horribly romantic that it takes my breath away. I have missed five, fifteen or even twenty minutes of exams and classes and official appointments thinking about all this in the most vivid, painted detail and I hope I never forget that sheer winged bliss.
It's the love in the little things too. When Kamal burys his face in Habits boobs for emotional support because the coffee shop is getting to be a oversimulating situation, not because he doesnt care what the wide-eyed employees watching think, but because he loves his bro more than that. The Brocabulary. When Habit cited "Article 56: Help Thy Bro If His Back Be In Peril" ( plaintext: Article 56: Help Thy Bro If His Back Be In Peril" ) and Kamal lets go of sweet sleep to follow their old Code from college that's a joke but no it is but no it's not.
They are not Only romantic and not Only platonic but a third thing: so devoted the lines blur. You bet if Kamal gets married to someone then Habit will be invited and also snogging him for good luck before he ties the knot. They're the ultimate buddy movie to me. Fool antics, unexpected deep moment, WILD trips to the same few places they're used to, anti climax etc. Then at the end is an inexplicable (if you're straight ) inexplicable scene where they're in the same bed and oh my god. I don't know if I could've gotten through this part without crying. It's so....they're getting something from each other that they have been unfairly deprived of from the past. The soft touches, the touches that promise not to hurt..also the hickeys DAMN!??? Such a mess their designs are. I never thought I'd be the kind of person to be saying these things, but imagine the comfort it must bring them on some days to see their marks on each other and remember through the painful mind that, yes, he loves me. Anyway yes they're in the same bed and being silly hehe winky face. When the credits roll then Best Friend by Toybox (nightcore ) plays but with a special effect that makes your heart open all its eyes to eight new colors that you didn't even know existed.
NONE of the marketing mentions this( if you're straight). It's all shot like a found footage indie film btw.
But what really gets me is how they're...they look out for each other. They would protect each other with their lives. Kamal holding Habit laying down under his arms. Stitching him up when hes torn. Habit stashing Kamal away in his coat and/or boobs. Did I tell you one of his reasons for not getting top surgery was so that they could be comforting somehow one day btw. And I think it's somehow more meaningful to me when they're not solely each other's partners as well but DO have other people they see and would primarily define themselves as friends really. Friendship...is more important than love da😭( sobbing emoji) God, I'm so soft for that.
And really the kiss, Rose(kamal) meets Red(habit), is a culmination of all these thoughts. To me it's like an unashamed&mutual "I care about you dickhead" and that's beautiful. Thank you and always stay nasty.

you all learned the word queerbating and absolutely went with it as if ambigious homoeroticism isn't the greatest thing ever. the whole point is that it's up for debate and the reader can interpret it however they want! i'm just saying, i think all stories should have a patroclus and achilles; an are they close friends who would die for each other or are they lovers. you, the reader, get to decide! it's like a lil' gift for the gays :-)

A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge (1985) & Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street (2019)
Tumblr media
One, two, Freddy’s coming for you...
I feel like I’ve mentioned Nightmare 2 a few times on here but it never had it’s own dedicated entry so I’ve had a rewatch of it on my mind for a while now. That was only hastened when I recently learned of ‘Scream, Queen!’, a documentary cantered around Mark Patton who plays the lead character Jesse in 2.
Amongst the less than favourable reviews Nightmare 2 has, it also has the reputation of the ‘gayest horror movie ever’ which lead to the typecasting of Patton and him walking away from his acting career. It’s not something I was immediately aware of on my initial viewing of it, certainly there are a lot of moments that with that in mind stand out upon rewatching and a few that are less than subtle, such as Jesse going to a gay bar in the middle of the night only to run into his gym teacher. Some of it seems a little too much like people trying to read into things that aren’t there, like it seems people point out an early scene where Jesse gets into a tussle with one of his classmates Grady during a softball game. Grady rips Jesse’s trousers and they have a bit of a roll around on the grass before being separated. There are doubtless hundreds of examples of kids getting into fights like that across TV and cinematic history that people wouldn’t point out as examples of homoeroticism. But when you couple that with moments like a later scene where Jesse runs away from his girlfriend as they’re about to have sex, only to seek solitude with Grady and they have this exchange:
“There’s something inside of me. And last night it made me go into my sister’s room. And tonight with Lisa in the cabana, it started happening again.” “I think you are seriously losing it, bro.” “I’m scared, Grady. Something is trying to get inside my body.” “Yeah, and she’s female, and she’s waiting for you in the cabana. And you wanna sleep with me.”
You can perhaps see why people might start drawing conclusions from other scenes.
That ‘something’ is Freddy who is seemingly manifesting himself through Jesse into the real world. Up until that point though, the lines have been very blurry as to whether or not Freddy is actually back or whether Jesse is just going crazy, caught up in the wild stories of this vengeful killer from beyond the grave and becoming some sort of copycat.
It’s that part of the movie that I really like, this gray area where you’re not sure exactly what’s happening. It’s something the Nightmare series is able to explore with its switching between the normal and dream worlds but it’s taken to another level here, rather than just use that to build suspense as to whether a character is in danger due to Freddy being present in the dream world, you can see Jesse descending into this madness and are left to wonder whether or not he’s the one actually the one committing these murders.
Things can be a little disorientating at times due to the editing which I’m not sure is intentional or due to them making cuts. I think there’s a couple of occasions where things will pick up in the morning with Jesse wearing one set of clothes, then jumping to lunch time at school or in the evening back home where he’s wearing different clothes, inplying a day or more has passed. I suppose it does add to the atmosphere in a way but it also comes off a bit weird to me.
The movie is pretty much entirely in the real world so it lacks the creative and unique kills that often arise when people slip into slumber and into Freddy’s realm. But it does feature a scene where Freddy finally emerges into the real world and terrorises a high school party. You don’t really get that widespread sense of panic elsewhere in the series, there’s often that sort of low level of ongoing dread once the group of kids realise what’s happening and fear the next time they fall asleep but Freddy often kills people when they’re alone so it’s a change to see dozens of kids trying to escape, trampiling each other as they try and break through a gate or climb a wall. Apparently Wes Craven didn’t like this scene as it made Freddy look silly by having him surrounded by a bunch of muscular jocks. I find that a little strange though since, yeah Freddy might not be the most imposing figure size wise but his body is pretty much one giant, oozing sore complete with knives for fingers so I’m pretty sure he’s going to come out on top in terms of intimidation. Not to mention all the supernatural shit he’s seemingly conjuring like turning the pool into a boiling pot and summoning up pillars of fire.
I feel like this is where things take a sharp downturn, having the manifestation of Freddy emerge kinda removes all doubt and also takes Jesse out of the movie until the very end. It just feels a little anti climatic to have this big final battle suddenly fought by Jesse’s girlfriend who falls back on the trope of ‘I know you’re still in there, I love you!’ as she implores Jesse to fight back and finally overcome Freddy. So much for that gay subtext if it’s hetro love that finally saves the day.
Going into this rewatch, I had this built up very highly in my head which I don’t think it was able to live up to. Possibly because this years Invisible Man has surpassed it in my head as the really good example of that ambigious horror I like so much. Like Elisabeth Moss in that film, Patton has a real good look to him here in getting across the anxiety that Jesse is going through.
And to draw comparison to another Universal horror, there’s something of a Jekyll and Hyde or Wolfman to Jesse, the way he worries about this transformation that he’s going through and about the thing inside him coming out. During that scene at Grady’s place, Freddy emerges from Jesse’s body almost like a butterfly breaking free of it’s cacoon. Maybe that’s what everyone is talking about when it comes to the gay themes, that sense of discovery taking place amongst young adults and the angst surrounding whether or not they really want to reveal their true selves to a world that, as we’re unfortunately discovering more and more these days, still isn’t ready to accept everyone even nearly 40 years after this movie came out.
So for the documentary – Scream, Queen is an appropriate name for more than just the play on the ‘scream queen’ moniker given to notable horror movie actresses like Jamie Lee Curtis, and the obvious double meaning with it being focused around Patton’s sexuality. There’s quite a few instances of him delivering screams during Nightmare 2 which is a little unusual for a male character in a horror movie, not least a lead like he was. Plus it’s a little unusual for a male to be the lead at all, ‘last girl’ and all that, especially in the Nightmare franchise, all the other ones I’ve seen so far are female led.
They talk about the negative reputation the movie has and highlight a lot of internet comments about the sexual themes, a lot of slurs in there and comments like ‘Jesse screams like a girl’. Well wouldn’t you if some burn victim grabbed you in your house, ran knived fingers across your face and then ripped the top of his head off to expose his brain? I don’t doubt for a second that there are scores of people out there who would write this off due to this, I would hope that those are just a minority and if people don’t like it that they have legitimate reasons for that.
It’s a very eye opening story because even after learning about all this ‘gay subtext’ surrounding the movie and Patton’s departure from acting, I hadn’t really thought about the wider reasons behind that. Like, you hear about him being typecast and you just think that he doesn’t want to be pigeon holed into just playing one type of character or that it was hard to find work in those roles because not many of them existed. But it’s much deeper and more disturbing than that, delving into the emergence of the disease into the wider public knowledge during the 1980’s and the panic surrounding that. They show archived headlines and TV clips, with one member of the public being interviewed on the news saying “what they’re doing is abnormal...they’re not fit, they’re not human beings”. It’s painted as a bit of a witchhunt, with tabloids trying to out any closeted Hollywood stars and Patton tells a story of being duped into divulging information on his own boyfriends illness. With blood tests implemented for any prospective actors and him being advised to look and act a certain way to be more palatable to casters, he’s being asked to deny who he truly is.
For as much as the movie looks at the darker period of his formative years and him walking away from Hollywood, it’s encouraging to see his re-emergence into the public eye and embracing the fandom surrounding the movie, taking part in conventions and screenings that shun the negativity and instead see the role as empowering, encouraging people going through similar situations and being something of a role model.
The film culminates in a sit down talk between Patton and Nightmare 2’s writer David Chaskin who he feels has thrown him under the bus whenever talk of the ‘gay subtext’ has come up, having long denied any such thing before slowly changing his story and claiming that it was the casting that ruined the movie. Just before this there is footage of Patton and Jack Sholder at a convention where Sholder comes across as a little condescending. He’s basically telling Patton that directing his ire at Chaskin is misplaced and that he should drop the whole thing given it’s been 30 years. There’s an element of truth to that but I think it’s understandable that Patton would feel that way, especially when he points out that it’s only recently that Chaskin has taken ownership of the subtext now that we’re living in a more understanding time where it’s perhaps viewed as a brave move to introduce this kind of element. It’s going to be hard to look past someone enabling more vitriol by pinning problems on you.
The talk between Chaskin and Patton is a little awkward and it comes across like they’re there for different purposes, Chaskin trying to lighten the mood periodically where Patton keeps a serious tone, challenging Chaskin on some of the comments he’s made.
Tumblr media
There’s one in particular where Chaskin suggests that the movie could be played at conversion camps....yikes.
Patton openly saying beforehand that he’s looking for an apology but I don’t know if he exactly got that. Chaskin says he hopes Patton can forgive him and that there are previous comments he made that he regrets but it comes across a little laboured. Maybe there was more said whilst the cameras weren’t rolling or maybe Patton is just accepting what little he can get from the experience in order to bring some closure to the whole thing.

heavenly creature hell part whatever
this camera angle is absolutely suggesting them holding hands is gay and the diary entry selected over it definitely does even tho like ok the word “Caress” is a lot but theyre also sisters in the metaphor and it immediately reverts to talking about genius but the context WITHIN THE MOVIE is seeing her best friend in person outside a hospital for the first time in SIXTH MONTHS fucking of COURSE theyre going to hold hands in the car
including the rapist crying his love chasing the train as comic relief....over diary entry about men are fools and be so lucky to have such two (2) lovely ladies rule over them....honestly how dare this be made about lesbian aesthetics this dismissively like NO SHE HATES MEN BECAUSE THEY ASSAULT NOT BECAUSE SHE ONLY HAS EYES FOR KATE WINSLET. GOD.
i feel like the movie potentially let’s both of those things exist which is a better thing for a movie to do it’s just more homophobic when done to people who, say it with me if you know the words, HAVE SAID THEY WERE NOT ROMANTICALLY INVOLVED.
OH NO, IT’S NAMED HEAVENLY CREATURES BECAUSE THERE’S A DIARY ENTRY ABOUT HOW ITS A MIRACLE THAT TWO SUCH HEAVENLY CREATURES ARE REAL. AND PASSIVELY WATCH THE RACE OF MAN DECAY. AND ITS AMBIGIOUS WHETHER THATS MAN AS IN ALL OF HUMANITY OR MEN IN GENERAL. BUT IT’S MORE LIKELY THE FORMER. DEFINITELY MORE CONNOTATIONS FO THE FORMER. THAT’S JUST FUCKING GREAT. I HATE BEING RIGHT AND ALSO BEING MORE RIGHT THAN I THOUGHT IT WAS CUZ I THOUGHT THE GAY IN THIS WAS MORE SUBTLE/LESS A FOCUS BUT NO THEY LITERALLY PICKED A PASSAGE THAT THEY COULD PORTRAY IN A HOMOEROTIC WAY AND DO PORTRAY IN A HOMOEROTIC WAY TO BE THE TITLE OF THE MOVIE ABOUT THE MURDERERS WHO WEREN’T LESBIANS IRL. THAT’S JUST FUCKING GREAT, PETER AND FRAN.
[moviewise anyway] theyre just fucking cuddling, Jesus. I can’t believe straight people’s unwillingness to believe in lesbians UNLESS THEY ARE MURDERERS has me mimicking their stupid usually bullshit talking points, except unlike with most historical figures tehre is THE PERSON. SAYING DIRECTLY. THAT THEY ARE NOT. WITH LITERALLY NOTHING TO LOSE IF THEY SAY THEY WERE. ‘CAUSE THEYRE ALREADY KNOWN TO BE A FUCKING MURDERER.
I FUCKING WONDER WHY YOUR KID WHO YOU LOCKED IN A HOSPITAL FOR 4 MONTHS ALL BY HERSELF WITH TB IS SHORT TEMPERED WITH YOU NOW THAT YOURE HOME, LIKE ITS CLEARLY LESOPHOBIA MOTIVATING THIS AND YET THE MOVIE PORTRAYING THEM AS LESBIANS WHEN THEY AREN’T REINFORCES IT EVEN AS IT CLEARLY WANTS TO REFUTE IT. I’M GOING TO KICK PETER JACKSON’S ASS FOR BEING STUPID AFTER I KICK IT FOR BEING LESOPHOBIC.
Peter the not one but two close ups on Dr. Hulme’s face when he says a euphamism alluding to gay...the FLASH OF LIGHTING ACROSS HIS FACE THE SECOND TIME....what even is the tone we are trying to convey about what is happening, whose POV is that tone based on, the girls literally aren’t even in this scene. this is such a fucking mess
“she hasn’t DONE anything it’s the um...” me explaining why this movie portrays hetero murderers as lesbian murderers prior to this point. also i feel like this having happened really doesn’t excuse the gay looks melanie gave kate in teh beginning, if anything it not only affirms that straight people can recognize gay people BETTER THAN THE GAY PEOPLE CAN IDENTIFY THEIR OWN IDENTITY, but BECAUSE they weren’t gay in real life and this MOVIE is branded as a very accurate portrayal, it gives straights an excuse to be like “don’t be like juliet humes’ dad, just ASSUMING people are lesbians just because they write each other love letters and gaze solefully into each others eyes and kiss on the mouth and--” [again, the majority of the homoeroticism comes from direction, and to a lesser extent artistic license, than the first hand sources directly quoted)
“i think we should avert trouble before it starts” i don’t know whats...i dont know the word....but like a) hes saying thsi about a girl HE NAMED juliet like ah yes when u dont think someone has a crush on someone else the best way to guarantee that is to FORBID THEM FROM SEEING EACH OTHER (and also uh??? they were already separated for 2 months??? if anything theyre probably more intense bc tehy MISSED EACH OTHER??? let them calm down??) or applying “i think we should avert trouble before it starts” as general irony, which like. even on the off chance that’s a direct fucking quote, it’d be more effective to see it from a real person unscripted in a documentary, otherwise its cloying at best and tasteless at worst.
i like how he blames it all on pauline like lmao sir u r not slick we started talking about juliet and now no its the Other Girl corrupting my sweet sweet Juliet like shut UP
the weird stilted line read so that the “the very man” is emphasized....also tbh like obviously u shouldnt send ur kids to a psychiatrist for them seeming gay but the scene with the lightening crashing and shit makes the audience feel like they are doing something other than just like. sending kids to a child therapist to maybe have a lesson about boundaries. also again WEIRD THAT PAULINE’S SEXUAL TRAUMA NOT BROUGHT UP AGAIN HERE
This therapist fucking sucks
also its 1950 how are you gonna ask a 14 year old “do you like girls” like if the answer is no theyre still gonna interpret that as like “yes?”
SHE LITERALLY SAYS “NO” RE LIKING GIRLS IN THE FUCKING PSYCHIATRIST OFFICE EVEN BEFORE THE MURDER, STRAIGHT PEOPLE INCLUDING STRAIGHT PEOPLE *IN THIS MOVIE* ARE SO FUCKING QUICK TO LABEL ANY WOMAN DOING SOMETHING THEY VIEW HORRIFYIING AS LESBIANS *FOR AN EXPLAINATION*, and then this movie!!!! has the audacity to portray the friendship as more homoerotic than it might have been ANYWAY!!! thus reinforcing that the accusation or attribution of lesbianism is only something done to undermine others, not an evaluation of whether they actually are women who only love women! i fucking hate it here!
how are we even having a psychiatrist recommend her spend more time with boys without ever addressing again that she got in trouble for a man sneaking into her fucking room!!! like i get the parents not acknowledging it but how are the KIDS not saying anything i just! like! is it that life is weird or tht this movie’s portrayal of relevant information is DISMAL
yeah show me pauline imagining the psychiatrist dying like oh she’s a time bomb closer to going off sooooooo sccary like that’s. first of all, i’m fighting the critic who says jackson successfully manages to not tie the lesbianism to the impulse to murder in the street, bare fisted, possibly with rings on. if the critic just said jackson ATTEMPTED to do that i’m fighting them. literally the anti gay psych says u should spend time with boys and not juliet and she has a violent daydream and thats what they chose to portray in the movie.
the intentionally gross closeup of jagged teeth/lips as the doctor slow mo says “homosexuality” melodramatically is.....a choice. it’s not the choice i would have made in order to show the grim humor of the situation.
ok but what was actually up with the vomitting, was that from the trauma? also hi hello ARE YOU GOING TO BRING UP THAT U GOT MAD AT HER FOR HAVING A MAN IN BED WITH HER I FEEL LIKE THAT HAPPENED AND EVEN IF NOT SINCE WE’RE ALREADY FICTIONALIZING SHIT IT MAKES SENSE FOR THE AUDIENCE TO GET SOME FORM OF CLOSURE OR AT LEAST ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF THAT DISCREPANCY
ok but having a poster in the background of this conversation that says “healthy kiwis eat fruit daily” is genuinely hilarious and subtle and a clear criticism of the conversation, thank you peter
THEY REALLY DIDN’T BRING UP THE MAN AT FUCKING ALL
at this point even if they didnt bring it up irl the choices of what irl things to include are so varied and decontextualized that i feel like i have to keep watch for the movie LYING to me even though i DON’T have many facts about what actually happened???
me starting this: the hardest part to handle is gonna be hearing the real diary entries. me during this: the diary entries are the only bits worth hearing somehow
oh, she calls her deborah in the diary entry......absolutely wild how straight director point at gay sounding shit to say it is gay sounding shit and i have to be like “it’s not gay because she said its not and tbh even if she’s lying WE DON’T WANT HER, PETER. WE HAVE ENOUGH FUCKING BAGGAGE, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.”
i still don’t know if the blonde girl is a boarder or pauline’s sister or cousin lmfao
WHY DOES SHE LOOK EXACTLY AS GRIM AND CREEPY AS SHE DID AT THE BEGINNING OF THE MOVIE AN HOUR AGO, FFS
ESPECIALLY BECAUSE PRESUMABLY SHE CAN FUCKING SEE JULIET AT SCHOOL
okay well they fucked her hair back up like in the first school scenes which i thought just meant shooting out of order but they framed the shot in black and white for a second so no i guess they were recreating an ~ominious~ school photo where all the girls are smiling but this little black cloud is glowering at the ground
“my name is Geena” you know whats wild about this is that it is simultaneously like. potientially undermining trans people and also is just like. she already goes by paul, paulina, and yvonne, what does one more even matter?
once again, the relationship this movie should actually be about (the victim and her daughter/murderer) is in the forefront and i have no commentary because shit is complicated and sad in an understandable, believable, tragic way!
like i really dont know shit about how this could have been prevented because we have next to no info on what was actually DONE, and if youre not basing the horror of the “misunderstood and unfairlycharacterized despite the horrificness of what they did” story in the horror of how easily the tragedy could have been prevented, than what the fuck is the POINT of the STORY? what even IS the stroy that youre trying to tell??? ‘they were creepy and its a scary thing to imagine could really happen but they werent on the exact same level of broad strokes evil that the media originally portrayed them as, its just the murder part that really is that bad?” like what the fuck is this movie even S A Y I N G how did this screenplay get a nomination for an Oscar (it’s because people hate lesbians and think theyre super weird so you get oscars for writing them because aaah u got in THAT headspace i could never, trophy for trying)
why are they naked in a bathtub togetheeeeeer/theyre planning to run away which i know is a real thing that happened so its not a dream sequence so whyyyyy/and under what circumstances/ were these girls threatened with being separated for seeming too gay/allowed to take a fucking bath together naked/also if pauline still sees juliet often enough that she can literally take a bath with her without her parents stopping it/than whhhhhhhhyyyyy are her grades slipping, is she actually sick, has her level investment in her fake world grown from the last time we saw her grades bc that was literally like a year ago so we the audience have no standard to measure that by/again i have watched this movie for over an hour and i still feel like nothing about whats happening is actually being fucking told to me, i feel like its insane that this is a narrative movie and not just a collection of first hand sources if youre going to just casually skip over huge chunks of things that in a narrative story would have to have consequences addressed
