where i am with reality tv shows, is that.. i like people predominantly being nice. and that’s what the circle was.
like, sure, people were competitve, and they had bitchy moments, but that’s what it means to be human. they got frustrated, and angry and tried to stir the pot and play chaos, they doubted. they talked behind people’s back, but it was like, sure, they need to vent, confide, collude.
but on the whole, it felt really wholesome and comforting, bc everyone knew they were playing a game, so if someone got catfished, they were like ‘alright, well played’, rather than -- spiteful and angry. it never really felt like people got overly mean, they like... they tried to understand. and when they had the face-to-face moments, it was just... nice that a connection had been made? they always hugged, and felt genuine affection for other people. like being catfished was a risk, and it really was like. no hard feelings!
i mean, that’s kind of like why i loved new world so much, bc the implemented game mechanics meant that backstabbing was v. possible, lies and alliances, but it was all... portrayed in a very childish manner? there was some make-believe aspect to it, magic realism or something, so it just felt... cute??? also broke king 4ever.
but i mean. british bake off is competitive but wholesome. it’s more about the friendships than the winning, in some ways. i almost watch it more for seeing people get on and help each other out rather than for the baking.
and a lot of competitive reality shows are like that. but man, i got tired of hearing about big brother, where the point is to be as vile as possible, or watching the apprentice, where it sort of just fell into the same pattern, making the most out of personality clashes. that i just... i could not care about these people!
idk. i just like. getting invested in these shows bc some emotional bonds were formed, and then also being equally entertained that at least one was a liar. but he did feel guilty! shubby was the best and seaburn felt guilty, but i still believe they’re gonna be friends afterwards!
