#fred jones #scooby doo #hbo velma #velma hbo #pretty sure this has already been done but whatevs #this is mostly a joke but like not entirely #the rest of the scooby gang deserves better as well but fred is my special sunshine boy #tbf i might also have sent this to james gunn if i had been a scooby doo fan in the early aughts #since he also did freddie quite dirty in the live action movies #but live action movies were actually my first exposure to scooby doo and i didn't like them so i didn't know better then #but now i do #and frank welker is the only one i really trust with fred #which is probably why they didn't let him voice fred for velma #since he would've set them straight on the ooc-ness right away #and this is also supposedly why scooby isn't on the show #not frank welker specifically but like the execs at WB who wouldn't let their doggo #anywhere near something that was contrary to his spirit/character

you know as peeved as i am about the velma show, i feel like more people are so so angry about it because they don't know there is no scooby doo 'canon'. from complaints ranging from the Gang's personalities and backgrounds, their identities and interests, it can all be less aggravating if one just knows those things change all the time.

take velma herself for instance. i've seen people angry that her jewish heritage and status as a lesbian have been erased, when velma is jewish only when mindy cohn plays her, because mindy cohn is jewish (just how shaggy was only vegetarian when the late casey kasem played him). sometimes it's daphne who's jewish and velma isn't. and velma has only been stated to be a lesbian in certain installments, and even then it's been uh. in less than ideal ways (i wouldn't gave trusted 2002 james gunn to depict her respectfully, sdmi velma emotionally abuses shaggy, and most recently her crush on a villain in one of the movies tokenized a character of color).

really the most consistent character, outside of scooby doo himself, is fred, because frank welker has been playing him since day one... and even then, he wasn't always a bubbly himbo. the point being, almost every new team of writers puts their own personal spin on the characters, and has their own take on the loose "canon" that exists. if there's an installment you don't like, just wait a few years and there'll be one you do.
