Probably going to try and quit playing FO4 because we already have over 700hrs logged and it’s not... the kind of energy we want anymore IDK. The game is very FRUSTRATING even at the best of times and the core gameplay loop is so drab (esp after how long it’s been like... 700hrs is a lot. We played over 1,000 of Skyrim which is the same core loop anyway......) and there’s become a sense of almost being closed in while playing FO4... like we’re in a small room PAINTED like a big world.
Because we bought No Man’s Sky after seeing Vinny of Vinesauce play it recently and it’s VERY refreshing from “shoot guns and pick up garbage” simulator. They are very different games but they both revolve around exploration and collection in some way. Honestly, it’s SO NICE to not be playing a Bethesda game and it got to the point where we realised how... artificial the gameplay is in FO4... Feels like doing menial tasks between fights that are not exactly satisfying at low levels, to say the least (That’s Survival mode baby!!) and the whole thing seemed to just tap into our trash rat garbage-obsessed hoarding little animal brain, just collect AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE OR ELSE YOURE MISSING OUT. In No Man’s Sky we feel like we have room to breathe, and the game is SO CHILL. It’s like Minecraft in space.
Speaking of Minecraft TBH instead of FO4 or (God forbid) Skyrim, next year it’s just gunna be chill games that are more constructive than destructive. We already focus a lot of negative and violent energy into our art, so we don’t need video games as an outlet and TBH there’s nothing WRONG with violence in games, but FO4 has SUCH egregious blood and gore it’s absurd. No, it isn’t actually cool to hit a mutant dog with a pipe wrench and have its head just fucking explode, it makes every living thing look like it’s made of clay or something. Yes, my character is a hugely tall superhuman Synth and all but he STILL shouldn’t be able to explode heads with wrenches at level seven!! It’s just unpleasent and ruins the immersion (not that the dog companion animations and General Weirdness don’t already do this)
We’re not gunna like... Never Ever play FO4 again but when we DO play it we feel our collective energies being sapped and drained and it just seems flimsier and cheaper every time we turn the game on, so it’s not going to be a big time sink. Then looking at something like Minecraft where we’ve been playing for longer than Skyrim and FO4 combined, it’s never FELT closed-up, boring, or flimsy in any way. We can always return and find a goal and have a very fulfilling time. It seems like No Man’s Sky is going to be similar but we just started that out so there’s no way to really tell at this point BUT it shows a lot of promise.
Really need to remember that continuing to play games that frustrate and bore us isn’t healthy and that we really Actually Don’t Like Shooters Very Much.
