NWSL Thoughts: Week 4
We're still in the early part of the season, so at this point things are very much still settling themselves down, particularly while some teams have played twice as many games as others. As we approach the end of the first quarter of the season (five teams will have played a quarter of their games by the end of next weekend), the standings start to seem more reliable, but for now, most teams are still getting into the swing of things for the regular season, and this weekend's six games should be interesting.
This week's games
Thorns vs. Dash (6:00 Sat., Twitch)
Angel City vs. Current (10:30 Sat., Twitch)
Courage vs. Wave (2:00 Sun., Paramount+)
Gotham vs. Racing (5:00 Sun., Paramount+)
Reign vs. Spirit (6:00 Sun., Paramount+)
Pride vs. Red Stars (7:00 Sun., Paramount+)
Standings
Wave (9 pts)
Pride (7 pts)
Angel City (6 pts)
Thorns (5 pts, 3 played)
Racing (5 pts, 4 played)
Dash (4 pts, 3 played, +1 goal difference)
Spirit (4 pts, 3 played, 0 goal difference)
Red Stars (4 pts, 4 played)
Gotham (3 pts)
Reign (2 pts)
Current (1 pt)
Courage (0 pts)
Predictions/Why you should watch
Thorns-Dash: Because Sophia Smith is on fire, and the Dash's defense isn't.
Prediction: Thorns win, 2-0
Angel City-Current: Because Angel City's results so far have been weird, and you want to know how that's going to play out with the Current.
Prediction: Angel City wins, 3-1
I was probably going to go with a 2-2 draw here, until the injury report for Kansas City came out - in addition to their four long-term injuries, they also have four players out under Covid protocols, including LaBonta and Mace, as well as Izzy Rodriguez (who seems to be the first backup for Mace at left back) and Chardonnay Curran (who has made some solid appearances off the bench in midfield). They already have a smaller roster than most, so this means that they will be starting with sixteen players (including three goalkeepers) plus any short-term signings they are able to make, and I just don't think they have enough depth to pull this off. Bennett and Hamilton should be good to go, so I think they could manage a goal, but I don't think they'll have enough to hold the Angel City attack back for ninety minutes.
Courage-Wave: Because the Courage feel like a strong team, but the Wave look like a strong team.
Prediction: Draw, 1-1
If you're only going to watch one game this weekend, I think this is the one.
Gotham-Racing: Because these teams have met three times in the regular season, and each of them ended in a 1-1 draw (plus a 0-0 draw in last year's Challenge Cup), and you want to know if that streak will continue.
Prediction: Draw, 1-1 - the streak holds.
Reign-Spirit: Because these are two very good teams who both feel overdue for a win.
Prediction: Reign wins, 2-1
In all honesty, I'm a bit hesitant to say "you should watch" at all with this one - the Spirit are clearly already tired, the Reign are (rightly) furious over several missed, incorrect, or close calls that have gone against them recently, and the assigned head referee is among the more lenient of an already lenient refereeing pool, so the possibility of a really rough game seems higher than usual. They are both great teams when they are at their best, but I'm not sure they will be at their best (especially Washington, as much as I hate to say it).
Pride-Red Stars: Because there are so many questions around both of these teams and you want to know what's going to happen next.
Prediction: Draw, 1-1

Doing the nostalgia thing again.  Go figure, lol.  Anyway.  Today I’m lamenting the early departure of some shows that I watched once upon a time and there are so many.  Too many that (were) ended either right as they were getting good or just weren’t given a proper chance.  Oh what could have been.  Here are some of them, off the top of my head.  This is by no means a complete list because there have been just too many for me to remember.  Feel free to add your own.
I either follow actors/actresses that I have enjoyed in previous shows or get drawn in by the drama or fantasy or utter sci-fi-ness (lol) of it all.
Bunheads
"Bunheads" tells the fish-out-of-water story of Michelle Simms, a once-promising classically trained professional dancer who was drawn to the lights of Las Vegas, where she became a showgirl. After she impulsively marries her persistent suitor, she moves to his sleepy California coastal town, where he lives with his mother, Fanny, herself a former dancer. Fanny now runs a local dance studio. Michelle ends up bonding with some of Fanny's students after meeting them. Among the students are sweet Boo, who struggles with her body type; rebellious Sasha, who has the talent to be a ballet dancer but doesn't have her heart in it because of family issues; shapely Ginny, who's not comfortable in her own skin; and fun-loving Melanie, ready for whatever life throws at her. The students benefit from Michelle's knowledge, but she also benefits from them as they help her adapt to small-town life.
Off the Map
Idealistic, young Dr. Lily Brenner lands at an understaffed medical clinic in a tiny town in the South American jungle. She is joined by other young doctors, all of whom are running away from personal demons. The clinic was founded by enigmatic Ben Keeton, who was formerly the youngest chief of surgery at UCLA. Keeton will teach the newcomers how to save lives in the most-challenging environment they have ever faced.
Defying Gravity
An international crew of eight astronauts -- four men and four women -- sets off on a mysterious, six-year mission covering billions of miles aboard a ship called the Antares. Inspired by the fictional docudrama "Space Odyssey: Voyage to the Planets," the show tells the story of both the astronauts as they explore Venus and the other planets in the solar system, and their supportive and dedicated ground crew. Episodes alternate between the present, on the current mission, and flashbacks to earlier years when the final eight were still in the grueling selection and training process.
Flashforward
Residents of Los Angeles go about their day unaware that a mysterious event is about to change their lives. FBI agents Mark Benford and Demetri Noh are in a car chase; Benford's physician wife is in the middle of surgery; and Benford's friend Aaron Stark works on power lines high above the ground. Suddenly, something causes everyone in the world to black out for just over two minutes. During that time, each person sees a series of events in his or her own future -- some good, some bad, some apparently nonexistent. As people begin to piece together their visions on a worldwide website, Mark and Demetri use the information to try to pinpoint the cause of the blackout, and people are still trying to determine whether destiny can be changed, and what effect those changes may have on others.
Invasion
What if natural disasters were alien smokescreens designed to mask something far more ominous? When a hurricane threatens a small town in Florida, park ranger Russell Poole's young daughter is the only one to see small lights floating towards the water, seemingly unaffected by the vicious winds. At the time, he thinks nothing of her claim, but begins to suspect something may be amiss when his missing ex-wife is found, with no memory of what happened during the storm. In the aftermath of the storm, water-based creatures infiltrate the town and take over the bodies of the town's residents through a cloning process.
V (2009)
Earth has its first encounter with an extraterrestrial race. Calling themselves the Visitors and promoting peace, they seem to be friendly, but their congeniality may be a cover for a malevolent agenda. Erica (Elizabeth Mitchell), an FBI agent, discovers a secret about the aliens that threatens the lives of Earthlings, including her teenage son, who sees them as a sign of hope. Meanwhile, Father Jack (Joel Gretsch), already questioning his faith when the Visitors arrive, seeks answers outside his church and finds other dissidents who believe the Vs are not what they claim to be. The ABC series is billed as a reimagining of a 1980s miniseries by the same name.
Hannibal
Gifted criminal profiler Will Graham has a unique way of thinking that allows him to empathize with anyone, including psychopaths. But while helping the FBI pursue a particularly complicated serial killer, he decides he could use some help and enlists the brilliant psychiatrist Hannibal Lecter. The two form a partnership and it seems that there is no villain they can't catch together, but Lecter harbors a dark secret. His own brilliant mind has gone to the dark side and he has more in common with the criminals they hunt than Will could possibly imagine.
Anne with an E
This reimagining of the classic book and film is a coming-of-age story about a young orphan who is seeking love, acceptance and her place in the world. Amybeth McNulty stars as Anne, a 13-year-old who has endured an abusive childhood in orphanages and the homes of strangers. In the late 1890s, Anne is mistakenly sent to live with aging siblings, Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, who live on Prince Edward Island. Anne, who proves to be uniquely spirited, imaginative and smart, transforms the lives of Marilla, Matthew and everyone else in their small town.
Pitch
Talented baseball pitcher Ginny Baker immediately rises to fame when she is called up by the San Diego Padres and becomes the first woman in Major League Baseball. She immediately sets in on the task of proving herself to her teammates, starting with team captain and catcher Mike Lawson. The two share an immediate chemistry, putting Mike in the middle of tensions between the beautiful new player and certain teammates who don't appreciate a woman out on the mound. Not all of her fellow Padres are so averse to change, with center fielder Blip Sanders providing support through her journey.
Colony
In the not-too-distant future, Los Angeles has been invaded and occupied by outside forces, causing a rift between the city's residents; some have collaborated with the occupation, while others are rebelling and suffering the consequences that come with that choice. Former FBI agent Will Bowman and his wife, Katie, must consider their familial obligations when making their decision because they were separated from their son, Bram, during the invasion. Proxy Snyder, a cunning and powerful leader within the occupational government, offers Will the opportunity to get Bram back if he works with the invading faction. Will's decision doesn't sit well with Katie, but the couple risk their lives -- and their relationship -- to protect their family.
Life Unexpected
After 15 years of being with different families in Oregon's foster-care system, Lux decides to try her luck as an emancipated minor. As she navigates the legal system in pursuit of that goal, she encounters her birth father, bar owner Nate "Baze" Bazile, living like an aging frat boy with two slacker roommates. He is stunned to learn that he has a teenage daughter and introduces Lux to her mother, radio personality Cate Cassidy, who is sad to learn her daughter has grown up in foster care but thrilled to meet and get to know the girl. She has plenty of opportunity to get acquainted when the judge decides Lux isn't ready to be emancipated and grants temporary custody to her birth parents.
Crisis
A vengeful mastermind ambushes a schoolbus carrying the children of Washington, D.C.'s, elite, abducting the children and their chaperons, and creating a national crisis. The powerful parents -- including the president himself -- find themselves at the mercy of the abductor with nowhere to turn, creating an unthinkable situation that puts the entire nation at risk. As the authorities work to rescue the children, the parents discover how far they are willing to go to protect the people they love.
Emerald City
When a tornado transports Dorothy Gale from Lucas, Kansas, to the faraway land of Oz, her arrival sets in motion a prophecy about a disastrous event known as The Beast Forever and strikes fear into the land's almighty ruler, the Wizard. On her quest to meet the Wizard in Emerald City, Dorothy encounters witches, an amnesiac soldier, a sheltered little boy and many more mysterious beings who will ultimately shape the future of Oz and Dorothy's place in it.

Alright, everyone, this is a personal post as much as it’s a public post so feel free to scroll all the way down to the  colored text for the public part of the message but if you, like me, enjoy drama, then continue on!
So, to make a very, very, very long story short for those who don’t know, I call my birth mother Mother Gothel due to her emotionally abusive upbringing of me that caused me to suffer from severe depression, anxiety, and even hair loss! A few years ago, back in 2016, my friend-turned-sister drove down with her mother, packed me and my bags up, and gave me a place to live and start over where I’ve been able to get jobs, go to school, and become much healthier than I used to be!
During those years of growth and recovery, however, I kept in contact with Gothel through emails and the occasional phone call. Over the years, from the safety of being hundreds of miles away, I told her that I was gay and dating a girl. The resulting emails were not pleasant and she had no problems about calling my girlfriend a whore. Lovely, right?
Every email she has sent me has contained detailed bible quotes and scripture and needles of guilt over everything I’m doing “wrong.” She’s still “so proud of me,” however. So at least there’s that, right?
As of recently I emailed her and told her that I will be attending a four-year university in Tacoma Washington (moving away from Illinois) to continue my education. Her resulting email was lengthy. Here is some of it - cut for length.
Hi Michelle.
...
You have to watch everything you say this day and time, at least that is what Jesus said in the Book of Matthew 5:37-- "Let your Yes be Yes, and let your No be No. Anything else is from the evil one." (anotherwords the devil will take your words you speak and trip and mess you up land you in jail or prison for 10 yrs)That would be really sad after you work so hard for an education and degrees then let him mess you up but read in John 10:10--the enemy comes to steal--kill--destroy--but Jesus said I have come so that you may have life and have it more abundantly.  That is why Jesus said in Proverbs 18:21" Life and death are in the power of the tongue"
...
I was telling Mom on the phone just this morning we talked for two hours-- that I was going to get a restaurant job here as soon as possible and let it move me out of here--I am moveing to Battle Creek or Marshall by Sept (labor day) and that I was sooo excited that I would finally get to see you, she said either her or Carl would drive me to [REDACTED] every now and then to see you. So Yes, I feel like a bomb was just dropped on me, my heart is broken, however I hope you will be happy and I wish you well in body and spirit-- I wish you nothing but the best. Just know one thing is for sure, I read my Bible and I will tell you right now, we are living in our last days you need to be concerned about where you are going to spend eternity. I just finished up reading the book of Matthew. In Matthew 21:25 The Heading Reads: "The Coming of the Son of Man" vs 25- And their will be signs in the Sun, the Moon, the Stars--mens hearts will fail them for fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. vs 27--THEN they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with Power and Great Glory. Now when these things begin to happen, look up and list up your heads, because your redemption draws near". Jesus said He would give us signs in the Heavens above and the earth beaneath. All of the earthquakes that have been happening for the last decade leading up to the Austrailian wildfires, and billions of animals died, God is giving us the signs, its just like He said in Matthew 24:36-44.
Lastly, 1 Thessalonians 4 :13--But I do not want you to be ignorant brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God wil bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from Heaven With A SHOUT--with the voice of an archangel, and with the Trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rist first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord, Therefore Comfort one another with these words.
After the Rapture, then comes the tribulation. I have read Revelation many times and to say the least you don't want to be left behind.  In Heaven their will be 30 mins of silence that is when all Hell breaks loose down here. Just whatever you do, Do NOT take the mark of the beast if you do, then you will mark your soul for eternal damnation. Then you will hear the devil say----"Hello! Welcome to Hell!
I am saying all of this bcuz now you have a choice to live for God or for Satan. If something should happen to your body or God forbid but if someone tries to take your life or you get in an accident and your heart is not right with God--That is exactly how you will stand at the Judgement Bar. The minute you take your last breath in this body, you will be ushered into the presence of God then it is too late to make a decision there it is if the Angel does not find your name in the Book of Life, then the devil stands there waiting to escourt you to------Well lets just say---You Don't want to go there. But the Bible says you will answer for every deed done in the body good and bad.I know one thing, it can't be too much longer according to scripture. The greatest tool the enemy uses from his toolbox is that you have plenty of time--well I can say the devil is a liar cuz Jesus just says--Be Ready it is not up to us how long we get to stay down here, that is God's calling.Second Timothy 3----But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come. For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! For of this sort are those who creep into households and make captives of gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts, always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of truth.
Sister, we are living in our last days, make every day that God gives you breath in your body count bcuz you don't know when it will be your last day. There is pleasure in sin for a season--Hebrews 11:24. Whatever you do, don't let the devil take your life and your soul, it is not worth it.
Love You So Much and want to make sure your soul doesn't go to H---.  I am praying that you will have a preacher as a husband.I miss you Michelle, I miss hugging you, I miss walking up those stairs to bring your meals to you I would LOVE to hug you just one more time. That may or may not happen before He Returns ony God knows this. Please write me back when you can, you are always on my heart and mind. I have made mistakes while we were all living at 2414, I am so very sorry I pray that you forgive me if I have offended you please forgive me, I thought I had it all together. But now I see, I was just messed up and made lots of wrong choices, but God came along with His Holy broom and cleaned up my mess and said to move on. I am so glad when He forgives our sins, He forgets never no more to be remembered. All I can say is ---Thank-you Jesus.
...
Love You Forever my dearest Daughter and Friend.
This is the average email from her and I’ve been told that it’s not normal to receive emails this long talking about how she’s ‘devastated’ by my choices and how the world is going to end in hellfire soon. Please allow me, however, to show the email she immediately sent after the above.
[T]acoma is Washington's most dangerous city, with a violent crime rate of 953 incidents per 100,000 residents. While this is a relatively high rate — the 96th worst in the country — the city's incidence of property crime stands out even more. ... Indeed, the city had the country's 15th highest property crime rate in 2016
The overall crime rate in Tacoma is 138% higher than the national average. For every 100,000 people, there are 16.81 daily crimes that occur in Tacoma. Tacoma is safer than 3% of the cities in the United States. In Tacoma you have a 1 in 17 chance of becoming a victim of any crime.
Have you done the research for this city? They said Tacoma is the most violent city in Washington,I love you and want you to be happy. There are sooo many universities with the same opportunities.
How would you get around, does your friend drive? I did see how beautiful the area is but you just have to be careful I guess everywhere you go.
As you can see, she immediately invalidates my choice - something I was very truly wonderfully excited about - and sends me a message that triggers my anxiety. I should note that she did not allow me out of the house without her even when I was an adult and over 18. If I went somewhere she had to be there with me.
Ah, but now we come to today and the email that spurred this post to creation. The above emails were sent two days ago and I have yet to respond. The email below was sent just today.
Hi Michelle.
While I cannot apologize for what I said, It was not my intention to offend you in any way. I just went to google and typed in most dangerous city in the state of Washington and Tacoma popped up, that is out of 100 cities in the state.Okay, I know you say you have been there and all and you are no match for all of the evil there. God forbid, should something happen to you--you would be just another name and another number to them there is no much evil there they can't control it, I say to you just watch on a daily basis all of the crime that goes on in that sin city.
You better be praying about this cuz I don't think God would want you to put yourself in harms way--make a wiser choice, and God will bless you for it.Look at what happened to kobe bryant incident.... they met a very bad situation face to face and of course their was no way they could turn that around. My whole point of conversation.....sure you can do what you want bcuz you are an adult grown woman, but I would strongly advise you to pray to God about it and make a wise choice here, your life and future depends on right choices you make now.
What about University of Michigan in Ann Arbor or East Lansing University, Michigan University Kalamazoo, they are on the ten universities in Michigan. You need to reconsider your decision and think about your resourses you can get more help from family  bcuz I have all kinds of family up there and I will be up there soon. You are no match for Tacoma Washington. I only say this bcuz you are my daughter and I don't want something really bad come out of this just bcuz you are trying to get an education behind you--this calls for wise decisions.
You may never speak to me again, but I just want to inform you that you need to be very very cautious here.
Love You Forever.
...
“You may never speak to me again.”
...
This is the last email I have read from her and it will remain the last email I will ever read from her. I also will not be sending her any emails ever again because you know what?
Her scared, anxious daughter Michelle Jean Anderson died and I’m what’s left - and I’m sick of her shit.
So, hello, everybody! My name is Andy Alex Anderson and my pronouns are he/him (or they/them if you panic and forget) and it’s a pleasure to meet you!

Sanaa Lathan
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sanaa McCoy Lathan (born September 19, 1971) is an American actress and voice actress. She has starred in many films, including the box-office hit The Best Man and its 2013 sequel, Love & Basketball, Brown Sugar, Alien vs. Predator and The Family That Preys. Lathan was nominated for a Tony Award for her performance on Broadway in A Raisin in the Sun. From 2009 to 2013, she voiced Donna Tubbs in The Cleveland Show. In 2010, she starred in the all-black performance ofCat on a Hot Tin Roof at the Novello Theatre in London.
Early life
Lathan was born in New York City. Her first name means "art" in Swahili and "shining light" in Arabic. She is of African American and Native American descent. Her mother, Eleanor McCoy, was an actress and dancer who performed on Broadway with Eartha Kitt. Her father, Stan Lathan, worked behind the scenes in television for PBS, as well as a producer on shows such as Sanford & Son and Russell Simmons' Def Comedy Jam. Her brother is Tendaji Lathan, a well known DJ. She attended Manhattan Center for Science and Mathematics.
She graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a degree in English. Lathan then attended Yale University with a degree in drama.
Career
Following her training at Yale, where she studied with Earle R. Gister and performed in a number of Shakespeare's plays, Lathan earned acclaim both off-Broadway and on the Los Angeles stage. Encouraged by her father to make Los Angeles her professional base, Lathan found early television roles on episodes of such shows as In the House, Family Matters, NYPD Blue, and Moesha. During that same period, she won raves and a Best Actress nod from the Los Angeles NAACP Theatrical Award Committee for her performance in To Take Arms.
In 1998, Lathan earned a degree of recognition with her role as the mother of Wesley Snipes' title character in Blade. She followed this the subsequent year with a role in Life with Martin Lawrence and Eddie Murphy and back-to-back turns in The Best Man and The Wood. The Best Man was a comedic ensemble film, starring Taye Diggs, Nia Long, Harold Perrineau Jr., and Morris Chestnut. The Best Man went on to become one of the top ten highest grossing African American films in history and Lathan received a NAACP Image Award nomination for her performance. The Wood, another ensemble film starring Diggs and Omar Epps, cast her as the love interest of Epps. Lathan and Epps were reunited onscreen in Gina Prince-Bythewood's Love & Basketball, this time playing a couple as passionate about basketball as they are about each other. Her performance in Love & Basketball earned her the 2001 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture, as well as an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Actress and a BET Award. In 2000, Lathan appeared in the Off-Broadway production of The Vagina Monologues along with Teri Garr and Julianna Margulies.
In 2001, Lathan earned additional acclaim for her work in the multicultural comedy film Catfish in Black Bean Sauce. Next was her second collaboration with Prince-Bythewood: Disappearing Acts; it is based on a novel by Terry McMillan. In the HBO film, Lathan is cast as an aspiring singer/songwriter in love with a carpenter, played by her Blade co-star Wesley Snipes. For her work in the film, Lathan earned an Essence Award for Best Actress. That year, she was named by Ebony magazine as one of its 55 Most Beautiful People and was honoured by Essence magazine and Black Entertainment Television. In 2002, Lathan starred in the romantic comedy film, Brown Sugar, alongside Diggs, Queen Latifah, and Mos Def. Lathan's performance earned an NAACP Image Award Nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture. The film also received an NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Motion Picture. In 2004, Lathan starred on Broadway in A Raisin in the Sun with Sean Combs, Audra McDonald, and Phylicia Rashad. Lathan received a Tony Award nomination for Best Performance by a Featured Actress for her portrayal of Beneatha Younger. Several years later, Lathan reprised the role in a critically acclaimed ABC Network production of A Raisin in the Sun.
In 2003, she co-starred with Denzel Washington in Out of Time. The following year, she was cast in the lead role in Alien vs. Predator. The film was a major success grossing over $171 million worldwide.
Lathan has acted in several roles in which her characters are involved in interracial relationships. In 2006, she co-starred with Simon Baker in Something New, a romantic comedy; as Michelle Landa, the much younger wife of a Texas businessman (Larry Hagman) during the fourth season of the television series, Nip/Tuck; and in 2008 as Andrea in Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys. The film also features Alfre Woodard and Kathy Bates; it was released in the U.S. on September 12, 2008. In an interview with NPR, Lathan said the script took a fresh approach to telling an interracial love story, by describing the internal conflict some African-American women confront when it comes to dating interracially. "I feel like with black women, in a way, I feel like it has been harder for us to go there just in terms of culturally. I know that there's this statistic that says that like 13 percent of black men are in interracial relationships. And don't quote me on this, but it's like four percent or three percent of black women are in interracial relationships; and I think that says a lot about, you know, either black women's loyalty her black man or her either guilt about stepping outside of the race."
In 2009, Lathan co-starred with Matthew Broderick in the drama Wonderful World. From 2009 to 2013, she voiced the character Donna Tubbs on The Cleveland Show.
In 2011, Lathan co-starred in the Steven Soderbergh thriller Contagion alongside Matt Damon, Jude Law, Marion Cotillard, Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Bryan Cranston, and Laurence Fishburne. In 2011, Lathan starred alongside Anthony Mackie and Forest Whitaker in Repentance, a psychological thriller directed by Phillipe Caland. Lathan played series regular Mona Fredricks in the second season of Starz' original series Boss, starring Kelsey Grammer.

NWSL Thoughts: Week 1
The NWSL's regular season kicks off tonight, and with the group stage of the Challenge Cup finished, maybe we know a little bit more about how things will shape up for these teams than we might have in previous seasons.
This week's games
Angel City vs. Courage (10:30 Fri., CBS Sports Network)
Thorns vs. Current (6:00 Sat., Twitch)
Red Stars vs. Racing (8:00 Sat., Paramount+)
Spirit vs. Reign (5:00 Sun., Paramount+)
Dash vs. Wave (7:00 Sun., Paramount+)
Pride vs. Gotham (7:00 Sun., Paramount+)
Games to Watch
To see a potential Championship preview: Spirit vs. Reign. The Reign finished the Challenge Cup group stage as the top seed overall and will travel to Washington to face last year's NWSL champions, the Spirit, on Sunday; they will face each other again on Wednesday in the Challenge-Cup semi-final. Although the Spirit just managed to scrape their way into the semi-finals as the best second-place team, they were making steady improvements throughout the group stage, and look poised to have another strong season in 2022. At this point, I would expect both of these teams to make the playoffs, fairly comfortably, and even if they don't, at this stage of the season, this is likely to be one of the most high-quality games on this weekend.
To compare apples and oranges: Thorns vs. Current. Both of these teams did fairly well in their group stage matches, but also didn't necessarily face much in the way of strong opposition. Based on those results, I would probably expect both teams to make the regular season playoffs this year, but this game should be informative in terms of how much of their results to this point were their own quality, and how much was based on their opponents' lack of form.
To see a lot of goals: Angel City vs. Courage. Angel City conceded the most goals of any team in the Challenge Cup, and the Courage tied for the most goals scored. With that combination, I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of goals scored in this game, primarily by the Courage - but Angel City managed to score a few solid goals of their own (and had a few more just barely denied by some of the best goalkeepers in the league), and the Courage are still missing Casey Murphy and Carson Pickett, both key pieces for their back line.
Predictions:
For this week:
Angel City - Courage: Courage wins, 3-1
Thorns - Current: Current wins, 2-1
Red Stars - Racing: Draw, 1-1
Spirit - Reign: Draw, 2-2
Dash - Wave: Wave wins, 1-0
Pride - Gotham: Gotham wins, 2-0
For the season - playoff teams:
Reign - While some of their success in the Challenge Cup so far could be attributable to the two expansion teams in their geographic group, the Reign do seem to have a very solid lineup with a lot of depth, and while they have really solid players, not many of their forwards seem likely to be called up in the July international windows.
Courage - I really don't want to put them here, but I think they have to be toward the top. On paper, heading into the Challenge Cup they were about 99% defenders, but they came out swinging and won half their games, and drew the other half, even before having all of their players ready to go. I think with Kerolin Nicoli, Diana Ordoñez, and Valerie Gauvin on top of Debinha and the Picketts, their ceiling is going to be just as high as it has always been.
Spirit - They've been on a high for a long time, and look ready to keep performing at that level for now, but I think at some point (possibly during the summer international window, if the eight or nine players that have been getting called up regularly do again), they are going to hit a slump. They'll still be good, and they might repeat as Championship winners even, but I don't think they'll manage to win the shield (besides which, a short spell of bad results could be just what they need to power them into peak form just in time for the playoffs).
Current - The Current have shown that they can pull results out even without some of their new stars, and their ability to grind out those wins will be necessary over the full season. Finishing this high will also be pretty dependent on not losing any new players, but most of their tough matchups are saved for July and August, when other teams may be more likely to have players out at international tournaments, and when (hopefully) Sam Mewis and Hailie Mace have returned from their injuries.
Thorns - I don't think the Thorns will do as well as they did last year, but Sophia Smith has shown an incredible improvement in her game, and I think they have done just enough in the midfield, in terms of developing younger players and getting new players, like Sugita, to cling to a spot in the playoffs this year.
Red Stars - I don't know how they are going to do this, but I think they will. Much like the Courage, what looked like it should have been a very weak roster on paper has shown just how much formation matters, and the Red Stars largely held their own throughout the Challenge Cup, even if they didn't move forward.
For the season - non-playoff teams:
Racing - I think Racing just needs a little longer to click, and then they'll be solid. Probably not solid enough for a spot in the playoffs, but much better than what last season's results would suggest. They're a young team, and a lot of their players are still trying to get their legs under them in the professional game, but they seem to have most of the pieces that they need - Lester and Merrick are already going a long way to solidifying the back line, Howell and Demelo are doing pretty well in the midfield, and with McDonald adding some experience to Ekic, Salmon, Kizer, and Davis in the front, they could stay in contention for much longer this season.
Angel City - Although Angel City had a rocky start in the Challenge Cup, an will likely continue to have some difficulties for the first months of the regular season, I think they'll move up the table later in the season when their long-injured defenders return to the game. It won't be enough for a spot in the playoffs, and they will probably still need to make some roster adjustments between this season and next if they want a shot at making the playoffs then, but they won't have a totally atrocious season on the whole. Also, defenses can't hold Christen Press off forever.
Gotham - With Allie Long likely out for the whole season, they don't really have a defensive midfield - the effects of that showed during the Challenge Cup, and it doesn't seem like it's going to change anytime soon. They have excellent defenders, and excellent attacking players (including Kristie Mewis), but they need at least one or two other midfielders to really up their game if they want to finish in playoff position.
Wave - They were built around their defense, but their defense hasn't been all that convincing, conceding eleven goals across the six games of the Challenge Cup. Added to that their somewhat shallow midfield and potential losses in their forward line for the summer international window, and I don't think they'll be able to pull out the results that they need here.
Dash - The Dash just didn't seem to come together at all during the Challenge Cup. They managed a couple of wins, but they also lost a lot of games that they should have won, and they haven't done much to replace the players that they lost in the off-season. Added to that a potential coaching upheaval, and I don't think the Dash will be able to get the results that they need early in the season to finish high.
Pride - Their roster was already in rebuilding mode, and then they lost Marta. Syd Leroux was also out for the end of the Challenge Cup, and it's unclear when she will return, which leaves Darian Jenkins their most dangerous scoring threat for that period. And Jenkins is a huge threat, to be sure, but without much support around her, she can only carry the team so far. Their midfield also doesn't seem to be gelling just yet, although they do have some good pieces there - if Leroux returns quickly, and the midfield figures themselves out, they could finish higher than this, but I think other teams are good enough already that they would be facing an uphill battle anyway.
