OH BOY DO I

In the original draft of this chapter, Wolf stays a, uh, wolf until like the 4th update. Instead of actually managing to get his teeth on the master sword, Loft threw him off immediately. The Deku Tree still said the line about all three of them being heroes and Slate is like. “Including the fucking dog????!” I thought it was very funny but a) it made some scenes later down the line a huge pain and b) I was tired of drawing wolves ALDKDKD

You may have noticed Wolf’s scowling in the bg of almost every panel. That’s kind of just his face, but also right now my guy is nursing the world’s biggest migraine from popping the shadow crystal out of his skull. He can stay wolfmode for a while, but it’s still technically a curse. It’s not consequence free, and there’s an upper limit for how long he can spend in that form. Anyway, cut him some slack if he’s a little prickly for a bit.

There were a lot of comments about Loft being strong enough to toss a wolf over his head lol. My hc is that he’s one of, if not the strongest Link sans any magic items like power bracelets or gauntlets. He’s actually not even as strong now as he was during his quest. Wolf maybe has him beat now, but he can still get tossed lolol

It might seem like Slate’s really taken everything that happened at the end of ch1 in stride, but don’t worry. He’s simmering. Loft is grateful for the opportunity to get distracted by something else. Maybe that’s why he was so willing to approach the wild animal he’s never seen before lol

This maybe goes without saying based on the events of the last two updates, but Slate never had wolf link with him during the events of botw. He doesn’t recognize Wolf.

I’m really glad ppl seem to be liking the colors bc I struggled with them so hard on both updates 🫠literally days of me turning to my roommate and going “I think I’ve never made anything worse” and them going “it looks good stop being dramatic” WKDJDK I have this thing where if I had an idea in my head for what an update should look like, and what I produce doesn’t meet it somehow, I start seeing in fucking. shrimp colors. Posting always gives me a confidence boost back lol.

these pages were cursed in general bc like. this doesn’t usually happen but I think I redrew every panel in this update at least 5 times each. that’s part of why it ended up being late SKDJF

I REALLY like the idea of being in the presence of the Triforce and having access to its power being this eldritch, divinely horrifying experience. The sort of thing that is impossible to explain to anyone and also haunts you forever. Loft spends a lot of time actively trying not to think about the Triforce. Just, like, remember that about him.

Like how tears in reality are shown through holes in the literal comic panels, I tried to show the concept of reality bending in the form of a panel stretching and twisting like a ribbon ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ I hope that came across. Triforce lore varies a bit from game to game, but I’ve come up with my own internal logic for bonus links that combines all the ideas I like lolol. We’ll learn more about it in due time!

I also really like this parallel :D I intentionally set up the panels so past and present loft would line up like this. i love getting to draw flashback links it’s so fun to think of ways to convey what they used to be like, and how their quests might have gone for them. Past Loft’s not having a great time by the time he reaches this point lol

Cool Cousin Energy off the charts

mediator, problem-solver, cat herder. but not in a way that comes off as overly strict or stuffy. it's more that he's so easygoing, when he actually tells you to knock it off you feel like a dick for making a scene lol

Tries to keep the mood light-hearted but can get serious when necessary

It's really hard to get him actually angry

He will tell you "Safety first, safety second, coolness third" but he'll backflip off the crow's nest into the ocean if u dare him to so

Even though he's matured quite a bit, he hasn't grown out of mischief or being a smartass lol and never will

He has however grown out of like, being embarrassed ever. he has no shame. cringe is dead. wear the clothes ur grandma lovingly made for you. LIVE A LITTLE!!!

I feel like I've said this before but if you ask him what happened to his eye he'll tell a different story every time

Very expressive with his face and body language, which makes it seem like he's an open book. But he's not really.

On that note. He seems pretty unfazed by most of what's happened to him. That's one part having a genuinely positive outlook on life and on part locking everything into a box in his head and then never opening it ever again. He's fine. It's fine. That's what boxes are for. Mostly it's been working for him.

That's another area where he's kind of "do as I say and not as I do" because he's often first to lend a ear to others and help them work through their feelings

He's got complicated thoughts about Ganondorf but we'll get there!

Family's really important to him. He brings Grandma and Aryll gifts back from his adventures all the time

Mask, Spirit, and Mini all remind him of Aryll

wait i've been trying to make comics on csp for a while and they always suck because i use regular illustration mode what is that?? how did you do that? is it webtoon or comic format? TELL ME YOUR SECRETS

I use clip studio EX, which has the multi-page comic function! it's unavailable in clip studio PRO im pretty sure :-(

if you've got EX tho, choose custom comic in the new file box, and make sure that multiple pages is checked, with the view set to webtoon. this automatically makes a folder on your computer and a .cmc file that contains all the pages in the project. it opens up individual pages as a separate tab so I always have all the pages lined up vertically to scroll through on the side like this

which means I can check panel flow and line up elements that connect across pages!

you can also choose page-to-page instead of webtoon if u want facing pages

How did you come up with the original concept? If this is somewhat spoilery- then don’t answer it. But i’m more so wondering what let you to go

Did you come to the understanding of, looking at other peoples AU’s? Or was it something in the games itself? I’m just curious on what your thought process was when brainstorming originally yk?

when making backgrounds- like Zelda and Wilds house or Lofts home with Zelda and Groose- did you base the backgrounds on your own ideas of what the characters would live in? Like if they’d have clutter or silly little notes in the background. I love how your backgrounds are just- chefs kiss- so simple but shows us a glimpse into the characters mental state (as all good rooms do *stares at my messy one*)

And I guess the answer to that first question is all of them above? Bonus Links is, of course, an extremely derivative work. LU was my first introduction to the links-meet-au format, so I’d be remiss not to give credit where credit is due! Probably many ideas I’ve absorbed from fics I’ve read, and headcanons I vibe with that come from the wider fandom. The idea for Bonus Link’s actual plot though originally started from my fascination with Skyward Sword’s lore. I know not everyone’s a huge fan of how much that game retconned, Demise’s “curse” in particular, but there’s a lot of ideas in that game that I find REALLY interesting, especially in ways that the game doesn’t really acknowledge at all. How would Skyward Sword Link feel, if he found out he truly didn’t finish the job? That the cycle continues on and on beyond him? That was the jumping off point.

Because it’s a cycle, I get a lot of ideas from like, which Links have experienced similar events, and how their experiences compare and contrast. What becomes history, and what actually happened? And I also use a lot of my own experiences playing the games as inspiration! I’d played as many as I had access to when I started the au in 2021, but I’ve made it my mission to play every single game a Link is featured in before they get introduced in the comic lol. Still got a few more to go, but I’m almost there!

As for the second question, absolutely! If I’m showing someone’s home in the comic, I try really hard to add details that tell you something about them. At the very least, I want them to look lived in lol

like, Slate still having the champion’s weapons on display in his house. Zelda’s mostly taken over the first floor as her workshop, even adding a Sheikah tech furnace somehow. She’s filled her room with pictures she’s taken on the walls. She’s got a sand seal plush from Riju, a Sheikah jacket from Impa. Her workspace is a little cluttered!

On the other hand, Slate’s room upstairs looks a little less personal. He’s got some pictures on the wall, and some plants growing from around hyrule (that Zelda has kind of commandeered for research lol) but otherwise he’s left it how Bolson and co furnished it. If anything, it’s mostly just for storage. He doesn’t actually spend much time sleeping here, but Zelda still doesn’t want to take it from him.

Loft, Groose and Zelda’s room is very cozy ( I should have added more blankets. Imagine like 4 times the amount of pillows and blankets) and tidy, but there’s still a little mess— shoes left out, basket of poorly folded clothes, etc. Cute knickknacks, mostly made by loft and groose! It’s not in this sc but groose’s comb is somewhere I think lol

Idk if iced shared this detail before, but Loft put a lot of effort into designing and carving (probably with some assistance) these columns for the house! Even though carving’s hard for him these days. It was his biggest contribution.

i am considering it! it would take quite a bit of reformatting tho, because I format the pages to be read vertically online 🤔 and the older pages would need to have their text bubbles completely redone lol

I’ve also been considering like. a bonus links art book? Which might be a little easier to compile. With a bunch of the concept art and little doodles I’ve done over the past few years, and some new art/bonus comics too. Both would be a lot of work but if people really are interested 👀👀

I had a bizarre dream last night that I went to a store apparently run by you??? there were all kinds of merch including some mugs with each bonus link on them. the only one I remember well is War’s bc it was just him standing there with “bitch.” written underneath. also apparently there were pokemon cards you’d illustrated and started selling?? idk. all that to say the idea of the War mug now lives in my head rent-free

I love sneaking loft being really excited/in awe about stuff they encounter into the panels,,,,bc of the nature of the plot he’s often in the doom gloom zone, but he has a fun side too!! I hope to show it off a little more!! He loves little creatures and magical things!! Even though a lot of his first quest was painful and terrifying, there was a lot that was beautiful too
