ive used my ath-m50 headset for nearly 10 years. i dearly love these things. ive used them for literally everything. music production, casual listening, editing, video games etc. even used them walking around in public (my newest phone is the first phone ive ever had without a headphone jack 😢). but it is probably time for a new daily driver

Most audio people agree that the ATH-M50 is, acoustically, a pretty mid set of headphones, nothing wrong with them but they're nothing special. Well, there is one special thing, which is that they're tough as nails. Studio headphones are not selected solely on sound quality, the other important properties are a low price and the ability to survive the rigours of daily life.

The reason why ATH-M50's and M50X'es litter every music and video studio is that you can really put a beating on them and they'll just keep going. I almost forgot mine at home and only right before I left for my flight I haphazardly stuffed them in the top of a backpack that was becoming checked baggage. After spending almost 24 hours tumbling through baggage handling from Johannesburg to Dubai to Prague it came out the other end with a slight kink in the cable from the temperature changes and a little more wear on the eternally shedding headband pleather. This same trip fractured the plastic tip of my laptop charger, which was safely tucked inside a much larger bag.

Сложность биткойнов снизилась на 2,14%

На этой неделе биткойн-майнеры сделали перерыв после того, как во вторник вечером сложность майнинга в сети снизилась на 2,14%. Сейчас сложность составляет 31,36 трлн после 32,04 трлн ATH, зарегистрированных во вторник, 13 сентября. Сложность сети останется на уровне 31,36 трлн в течение следующих двух недель, поскольку сложность корректируется каждые 2016 блоков.

В то время как хешрейт сети держится на уровне 234 экзахэшей в секунду (ЭХ/с), статистика показывает, что в течение последних 2016 блоков средний хэшрейт составлял 225,2 ЭХ/с. Согласно текущим показателям, при текущих ценах на BTC и затратах на электроэнергию на уровне 0,07 доллара за киловатт-час (кВтч), примерно 41 биткойн-майнер SHA256, использующий специализированные интегральные схемы (ASIC), получает расчетную прибыль от 0,12 до 7,95 долларов в день. При цене 0,12 доллара за кВтч девять майнеров ASIC получают расчетную прибыль от 0,33 до 4,24 доллара в день.

 I’ve been practicing vinyl DJing throughout the month of August. Haven’t been doing it recently since there’s a problem with my most recent turntable (the right one) and I’m getting it serviced at the moment.

Start using a stopwatch more. Use timers, watches, Google Assistant, anything works. 

I woke up today feeling reeaaally shitty, I hadn’t felt like that before in awhile. It kinda started the night before, I didn’t go to sleep at the time I usually do, I just stayed up and thought about how unproductive I’ve been in the past week. It’s been a few weeks since my internship ended, and while I did submit the storyboard test, I have this feeling that they’re not going to offer me a job. I don’t know, call it a hunch. And even if they do, it won’t be for awhile. I don’t think I have “awhile” left in my bag of time. 

I did one of those things where you wake up and then fall back asleep, and then you immediately fall into REM sleep and have a dream. This one only lasted for 30 minutes I think (7 to 7:30), but it took me awhile to remember what happened. The only thing I can recall is that the ear hook on one of my glasses broke and I lamented the fact that I bought cheap glasses (I don’t have cheap glasses, they’re from Zenni Optical, the Official Sponsor of the Chicago Bulls). There was something else that happened in this dream, too. I should’ve wrote it down when I remembered it, but it’s just past 2:30 PM now and it’s escaped my memory. It was bad, though. 

Should I live a life where I only think about others, or only think about myself? Which one is better? 

I set up some janky bluetooth headphones today. I attached this Bluetooth AUX dongle onto my ATH-M50s with some Gaff tape, and it’s sticking surprisingly well. Was almost on the verge of buying a pair of bluetooth headphones and another watch. Instead I ended up purchasing a USB Bluetooth receiver from Amazon so that I could use the computer to listen to audio instead of my phone. Either one works, I just prefer that extra convenience. 

AGDQ is currently running, got that on.

I need to get better. I really enjoy having regimented, rigid rules and time limits on tasks. If on any given day, you said “you have 10 tasks, an hour a task, you get no more or less time on each task, and you have to finish the task, no excuses.” I would like that. I prefer structure. Left to my devices I can be weak. I need to structure my time as much as possible.

This month's Frivolous Bullshit budget went to getting some really nice headphones second-hand. Audio Technica ATH-M50's. which means yet another piece of electronics I own is a decade old, but the newer ATH-M50X model is more than twice the price I got this for and purportedly sounds Exactly The Same so I'm not complaining.

This is my first time trying out like, really nice headphones for more than three minutes at the CD Listening Counter in a music store. Wow remember those things god damn. Anyway. Heard about this model while browsing some old forums to learn about miking techniques, they were apparently popular as "give this to the talent when they're listening to their recording" or for a portable studio setup.

I'm contractually prohibited from becoming an audiophile, but they are so nice I forgot I was wearing them because they sounded like my hi-fi system and that's good enough for me. I guess I was expecting it to be more noticeable? It's just very natural, I guess that's a flat frequency response.

Their reproduction is actually way better than my hi-fi, better high frequency response at lower volumes and much, much better noise floor than just blasting my room with waves while my PC fan whines quietly in the background.

I wore earphones/headphones for maybe 24 hours cumulatively throughout my entire childhood which has upsides (my high frequency hearing is shockingly intact) and downsides (I miss like 30% of any sonic media I have ever consumed in my room's noise floor.)

I have to go around with an FFT app on my phone pretty often so I can tell if I'm having a weird auditory hallucination or if a switching power supply is whining somewhere.
