I have wanted to read some classics by Elizabeth Gaskell for the longest time and I couldn’t pass on the opportunity to pick North and South up as part of a readalong with some fantastic bookstagrammers. In fact, I ended up enjoying it so much that I’ve already bought or been gifted three more of her books and I can’t wait to explore her work further. ⁣ ⁣ North and South introduces the plucky heroine of Margaret Hale. Her father leaves the Church in a crisis of conscience and the entire family is uprooted from their comfortable existence in Hampshire to a town in the North of England. For Margaret, it’s like nothing she has ever known and she begins to re-evaluate everything, particularly when she becomes aware of the poverty and political issues of the local mill workers. ⁣ ⁣ We also see the development of a fiery relationship between Margaret and the mill owner, John Thornton as she struggles with how the mill workers are treated and he in turn struggles with his feelings for a woman who drives him to distraction and infuriates him but he cannot help but admire. ⁣ ⁣ This is a beautifully memorable novel that explores important issues like workers rights, the role of women in society and class in a fascinating and very readable way. I loved that none of the characters were perfect. All had their flaws and eccentricities and it made me believe both the narrative and the author even more as a result. I’m very much looking forward to reading more from Gaskell and will certainly be re-reading North and South again in the future. ⁣ ⁣ Four solid stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 ⁣ #bookstagramuk #bookreviewingisfun #readingtheclassics📚 #northandsouth #elizabethgaskell #buddyreadswithfriends #reviewingbooksonthegram #authorsnewtome #classicfemaleauthors #classicnovelsnevergetold #classicnovelsnerd https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm41RjUrXPq/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I had a sneaking suspicion that I was going to love this novel, especially when I heard reviewers that I respect raving about it but I wasn’t prepared for HOW much I fell in love with it. This is the sort of book I gave a little hug and a squeal of joy after finishing and has a rightful space on my favourites shelf to be enjoyed again in the future. ⁣ ⁣ This is the story of an unconventional family - the indomitable Betty Ramdin, her introverted son Solo and their lodger, Mr Chetan. The trio are muddling through, enjoying each others company and sage advice until one evening, a family secret is revealed which changes all their lives for the foreseeable future. ⁣ ⁣ I became enamoured almost immediately with these fascinating characters. The awkward moments in the beginning when everyone is working each other out are truly cringe-worthy but I promise, it’s all worth it for the development of relationships that follow (hoping to sound suitably vague here! 😂). ⁣ ⁣ I loved how the relationships between the characters started, continued, grew and changed as all three main characters find out what it’s like when their comfortable routine is challenged. It’s a story about family relationships, difficult family dynamics but also the family we create for ourselves. It covers trust, forgiveness, hope and patience and created such an interesting group of individuals that I struggle to believe they don’t actually exist! ⁣ ⁣ Love After Love won the best first novel award in the Costa Awards 2020 and deservedly so. I can’t wait to see what Ingrid Persaud writes next! ⁣ ⁣ Five perfect stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 ⁣ #bookstagram #scottishbookstagrammer #bookreview #loveafterlove #ingridpersaud #costafirstnovelaward #costafirstnovelwinner #costafirstnovelaward2020 #favouritebooks2022 #recommendedreads👍 #authorsnewtome #debutauthors2020 #debutnovels2020 #readthisbookpeople #booksaboutfamily #bookssetintrinidad https://www.instagram.com/p/CjTW-OxLrGf/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Oh hello Friday, it’s SO good to see you! Let’s celebrate with a book haul 😜 These three paperbacks are a mixed bag but as always, I’m excited to get to two of them and to re-read another. I’ll start with The House Of The Spirits. I read this back in 2012 and loved it and have recently been meaning to pick it up again. Then I saw a used copy being given away at work so I took advantage and grabbed it!! It’s a family saga of triumphs and tragedies and I’m really looking forward to re-reading it again. Next up - Waiting For The Night Song. It’s been described as a love song to the natural beauty around us (okay, SOLD!) a call to fight for what we believe in and a reminder that the truth will always rise. This moving novel about friendships formed in childhood magic and ruptured by the high price of secrets looks so intriguing! Finally, Dog Rose Dirt which I’ve had my eye on since it was released. Serial killer Michael Reave, known as the Red Wolf, has been locked in Belmarsh prison for over 20 years for the brutal and ritualistic murders of countless women. Ex-journalist Heather Evans returns to her childhood home after her mother’s inexplicable suicide to find hundreds of letters between her mother and Reave. If she wants to uncover the truth and stop further bloodshed, she must confront a monster. I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments! Have a lovely weekend everyone 🤗😘 #bookstagram #bookstagramuk #bookhaul #paperbackhaul #prettybooks #newbooks #ineededthesebooks #waitingforthenightsong #juliecarrickdalton #thehouseofthespirits #isabelallende #dogrosedirt #jenwilliams #thrillernovels #favouritebooks #authorsnewtome #alwayshauling #insatiablebookworm https://www.instagram.com/p/CaaPPS5r61M/?utm_medium=tumblr

Hello everyone and hope you’re having a great week so far. Today I’m joining in with the #coffeeandcurrentlyreading tag but actually it’s more like #teaandcurrentlyreading 😂 and it’s decaf so….. 🤣 I’m reading quite a lot of different books at the moment but one that I’m really enjoying is Magpie by @elizabday which I’m reading with the amazing #bitcrackbookclub who are just a beautiful bunch of people. So far, I’m loving this novel. I’m completely engrossed and if I wasn’t reading other books too, I could totally see myself steaming through to the end. I’ve already read The Party by Elizabeth Day which I also really enjoyed and I’ve got How To Fail and Failosophy on my shelves. I am absolutely certain however that I’m going to be reading her entire backlist 😍 This post also comes with thanks to Hamish my little Highland cow footstool who is very comfortable and great at being a prop 😆 Have you read Magpie or any other books by this author? Let’s have a chat in the comments! #bookstagram #bookstagramuk #infertilitywarrior #magpie #elizabethday #femaleauthors #buddyreads #booksthatmakeyouthink #currentlyreading #bookclub #booksthatmakeyoutalk #britishauthors #beautifulbooks #authorsnewtome #highlandcowappreciationpost https://www.instagram.com/p/CaVUjf_LkfJ/?utm_medium=tumblr

Blood Orange has been on my TBR ever since it was released and I started hearing good things about it. Like many other books on my shelves, it has been sadly neglected until I saw that @buddyreadbooknook were holding a buddy read. I’ve done a few reads now with lots of other lovely readers (please see tags on this IG post) and it really is wonderful discussing different theories, especially when you’re reading a thriller which is bound to have some twists. ⁣ ⁣ This is the story of Alison who is a successful barrister in London and is about to become involved in defending her first murder case. Unfortunately Alison elsewhere is quite frankly, a bit of a mess. She drinks to excess (which quite often leads to trouble), she is having an affair and home life with her husband, Carl and young daughter is becoming increasingly difficult. ⁣ ⁣ As the story continues, Alison begins to realise that the clues to making changes to her life may lie within the case she is defending. However someone is watching every move Alison makes and is hell-bent on giving her the comeuppance they believe she deserves,⁣ ⁣ This novel is the very definition of page-turning! I was so intrigued by the plot and even more so by the characters that it was a thrilling ride from start to finish. Yes, there were unlikeable characters and for the majority of the novel Alison herself is very difficult to understand or sympathise with. ⁣ ⁣ There were a lot of events which occurred in the story that I really didn’t expect - I love when an author can shock me like that! As a result, I couldn’t figure out what exactly was going on until that final, jaw dropping last chapter. This was a fantastic buddy read and a great book to start off @emmasbookishcorner challenge for 2022 - “an author new to you.” ⁣ ⁣ Well, I’ve already bought and arranged to read Harriet’s next book on the strength of this one so she is new to me no longer!⁣ ⁣ Four solid stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 ⁣ #bookstagram #bookstagrammademebuyit #booksgloriousbooks #bookreview #bloodorange #harriettyce #thrillerbooks #thrillerauthors #fourstarread #fourstarreview #buddyreads #bookswithatwist #authorsnewtome #emmasbookishcornerchallenge https://www.instagram.com/p/CYhcG2CL5Ud/?utm_medium=tumblr

Friday is here! It’s time for another book haul. Today I’ve got three paperbacks for you, one of which I’ve already read - The Things We Do For Love which I buddy read with my lovely sister @chrissireads It was a difficult read for me on one level but I really enjoyed the story and will have my review up soon. It follows a seventeen year old girl who has a difficult relationship with her mother and a woman in her 30’s who is desperate to be a mother. Little Scratch is all the fault of the gorgeous @victoria_catherine_shaw who told me I had to get my mitts on this book. It is the story of a day in the life of an unnamed woman, living in a lower-case world of demarcated fridge shelves and office politics; clock watching and What’s App notifications. The protagonist tells us how she gets through morning to night whilst processing recent sexual violence. Finally, we have another translated work from @tiltedaxisbooks which I’ve become slightly obsessed with. I’ll Go On is a story from one of South Korea’s most acclaimed young authors about two sisters, Sora and Nana. When the girls are young, they lose their father in a horrific freak accident and their mother, Aeja becomes unhealthily obsessed with the violence in life. It’s a stunning exploration of the intensity of early bonds and the traces they leave on us as we grow up. I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments! Have a lovely weekend everyone 🤗😘 #bookstagram #bookhaul #cantstophauling #prettypaperbacks #tiltedaxispress #smallpresssupport #kristinhannah #thethingswedoforlove #littlescratch #rebeccawatson #illgoon #hwangjungeun #emilyyaewon #translatedfiction #literaryfiction #contemporaryfiction #lovingbooks #mybookcollection #onthetbr #bookhoarder #bookcollector #booksforlife #booksforever #authorsnewtome #favouriteauthors https://www.instagram.com/p/CaIUYwirXcg/?utm_medium=tumblr
