Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Year-Round
A performance at our Arts Legacy Remix: Hispanic Heritage Celebration in 2022. The impact and influence of Hispanic culture in Tampa is undeniable. Actually, make that Hispanic cultures, since the term Hispanic covers a lot of acreage, physically and socially. The description is applied to people from Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Spain. It’s a blanket term used for a…

Alzheimer’s Imagine Benefit Exceeds Expectations
The Alzheimer’s Association, the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s research, held its annual gala on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, with cocktails beginning at 6 p.m. at the Jazz at Lincoln Center. Formed in 1980 by Jerome Stone, the Alzheimer’s Association has raised over $80 million to date.
--------
The 250-person sold-out evening, attended by 250 people and costing $1,500 per ticket, was one of the most enjoyable of the year, featuring delectable food, a plethora of entertainment, and a meaningful program. Emcee Laurie Hernandez, a two-time Olympic medalist, and Alzheimer’s Association Celebrity Champion, introduced Ballet Hispanico, singers R.Q, Tek, Darren Criss, and Colton Ryan, and musicians Evan Drachman and Wan-Chi Su, who all made the evening a smash success.

Good and Bad News
In good news I was able to find multiple field trips which are free for Title 1 schools. Buses are provided by the city so as long as the trip is free the kids can go. The Intrepid and the national math museum are also offering free pizza lunch for our school. I also got a huge discount for the Bio bus to come to the school. They will offer presentations for six groups of thirty kids.
In bad news I haven't found funding for the Ballet Hispanico program. The school has had a partnership with the program for over a decade. Normally the PTA pays. Our fund raising has greatly decreased so we don't have the money this year. I started looking for grants in June but haven't had any luck. Actually I found a bunch but I should have applied in December. Now I need to email Ballet Hispanico and see what they will do for half the money - which is all we can afford. Will see what they say. I'll start in December for next year.
Learning Spanish is slow going with the girls. I'll teach them a saying that they've learned previously. Two seconds later they don't know it. Its a little maddening but of course I'm trying not to show it. Also trying to remember that they forgot reading rules a thousand times and then all the sudden were reading chapter books with ease. Hopefully, this is the same concept.
They start an after school art class today.
Drop off didn't go great with baby boy. First off we were dummies who let him on the slide - which happened to be wet. Then he was reaching out for us looking sad when we left. His teacher was with him. I think its better for him if we leave quickly. However, all of the other parents were staying so that probably made us leaving hard for him. Tmrw I guess I'll stay longer. I know other parents don't like it but I'm hoping it will soon switch to door drop off. I think that will be better for him. Anyway drop of anxiety is not my concern for him. He'll be fine with that soon. Its the behavior afterwards that I have to worry about.

Review: Turning the Dance Spotlight on Painter Juan de Pareja
Eduardo Vilaro’s latest dance for Ballet Hispanico is about a 17th-century artist who, in recent years, has come into his own. Juan de Pareja Spanish painter Diego Velazquez was a slave for more than two decades. During a trip to Italy, Velázquez painted a portrait of Pareja, his studio assistant, showing the Afro-Hispanic man shrouded in darkness, but with an open, unwavering gaze. Those eyes…

Review 536: Ballet Hispanico at The 92nd Street Y, NY
By: Ballet Hispanico

One of the things we love about dance companies is that they have a repertoire. That means that they have a wealth of pieces that they can pull from across the whole history of their company. A dance company literally honors its history and can bring it out for the audience at any time. This night Ballet Hispanico, the largest Latine cultural organization in the US, brought out three pieces from their repertoire that honored three choreographers and their attempts to show us what community and togetherness meant to them. The results were stunning to say the least.

L: Talley Beatty C: Annabelle Lopez Ochoa R: Pedro Ruiz
Recuerdo de Campo Amor (1985)
This piece exudes fluidity and strength but also possesses power and tenderness. It is a study in extremes. While we can see every muscle and sinew working on the dancers as they move with power we also notice a peaceful grace. There is a synergy between a choreographer and a performer. Not only do performers have to honor the choreo precisely but also their artistry is interpreting the movements and living through each sequence as if it was what they were destined to do. This ensemble kept the movements so fresh that we were teleported back to 1985.

Línea Recta (2016)
It is a refreshing thing to see a piece centering the feminine body and form and not feel objectifying at all. The principal dancer in this role was just as enrobed in a spirit of agency, passion, and power as she was in gorgeous flowing red cloth. We adored that the costume seemed like her most loved dance partner. It wrapped around her and soared through the air behind her. We love it when costumes and props can transcend and be something more than what they are. Then Lopez Ochoa’s play with symmetry and dissonance in ensemble work brought an already amazing piece to a spectacular finish.

Club Havana (2000)
There is a story going on in this piece that rivals anything the writers of the Great White Way could put up. This is the piece that had the absolute perfect balance of partner work, solos, and ensembles. It so invoked the Club Havana of its namesake that we could almost smell the food and felt like we needed a drink. Choreographers like all artists want you to feel something, anything with their work. Cuban native Ruiz would be happy to know that it made us feel like flying to Cuba just to see if it looked anything slightly like this.

I taught at The Ballet Hispanico School and had many interactions with Tina. She was incredibly generous with her time and artistic advice. She helped me become the teacher i am today. May I recommend
Starting each day off with a 5-6 year old dance performance. Bee/1st grade went yesterday. Rebel/K (along with the prek kids) went today. So hilarious. The energy of the crowd is equal to any concert I've ever been to. Every year a girl has to tell a boy what to do - generally by pulling them by the hand or pointing to where they should stand. So wonderful.
Ballet Hispanico leads the program - so each class does a different Latin country. Bee was Colombia. Rebel did an Afrobeats dance. I loved every single second of it.
Comedy Club fundraiser tonight. Spending the afternoon setting up. Tickets sold out with a waitlist. Should be a fun night. Home by 9pm - my style. Going on a field trip with Bee's class in the morning.

Women in cocktail dresses swivel in ballroom heels, smoke cigars and whip out tornado-like twirls of chaine turns. There are beautifully partnered attitude turns in deep plies, and the entire package is an ode to an era of social dance which no longer exists, a celebration of flirtation through motion. As performed by classically trained dancers, the ballroom moves take on an added elegance.
