Tom Rice
101st Airborne Division
501st Parachute Infantry Regiment
C Company

Tumblr media
December 17, 1941. Pearl Harbor.
It marked the beginning of a new chapter in World War II. Thousands of young Americans were called to arms to defend their home country.
Thomas Marcus Rice, then 22-year old, was a top athlete at San Diego State College while pursuing his studies when he left the peaceful town of Coronado, California, to answer the call to arms.
He volunteered to join the elite airborne paratrooper school. Despite it being a new and untested combat branch of the American army, it was the adventure, high risk, mental and physical challenge - and the additional $50 a month bonus - that convinced him to go beyond what his civil duty required.
However, it wasn't easy for young Thomas. During the early phase of the program, he trained with the U.S. Airborne Jump School pioneers at Camp Toccoa, Georgia. Tom faced many challenges due to the vigorous physical training and mental fortitude needed to complete this highly selective program. His instructors were eager to disqualify those who could not endure their intense drills. None of these deterred Tom; he earned the coveted paratrooper wings at Fort Benning, Georgia, through his determination and perseverance.
Tom then found himself in one of the most elite and demanding regiments of that time, the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division commanded by the legendary Colonel Howard Ravenscroft Johnson. This brought him to World War II's major battles as he served as a platoon sergeant and commanded 12 paratroopers until he jumped on June 6, 1944, over Normandy for Operation Overlord.
Tom was injured even before he reached the ground. He later realized he had lost his watch as it ripped off his arm while he jumped. Even so, he continued to battle on for days going on months. The battle of Normandy ended for Tom and his brothers-in-arms as they were disengaged but deployed once more to fight at Hitler's Eagle's Nest in Berchtesgaden, Germany.

On December 21, 1945, Tom Rice was honorably discharged. He resumed his studies and later on taught Social Studies and History.
June 5, 2019. 75 years later.
Tom jumped once again from a C-47 over Normandy to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day. He was 97 years old, sharp, alert, and still wearing his uniform that he wore back in the day.
Everything from the sky was the same. The English channel, the houses, the churches, and even the French people who were children back then. They welcomed him and the other World War II veterans as grateful adults upon reaching the ground of what was once enemy territory. The only thing missing was the gunfire.
Through this, Tom and his colleagues hoped that the new generation would understand the sacrifice and ted to rehe nemember the greatest generation of men who came and fought for the liberation of many more generations to come.

Laufstyle, with a smile
… Lilly* lacht und lobt den Klee.)
der Laufstylist, ein LillyFan ;-)

“As Japs Advance on Jehol Capital,” Moncton Daily Times. March 17, 1933. Page 1. ---- Somewhat reminiscent of an old picture of Napoleon's retreat from Moscow is this picture from the scene of Japan's operations in the Jehol Province But the Japs are not retreating. On the contrary, when this picture was made, the invaders were pushing on towards Jehol City, capital of the province, which fell into their hands after a half-hearted resistance. Sub-zero temperatures slowed advance.

“Resolving Itself Into four offensives the Japanese campaign has developed the heaviest fighting in its attempt to annex Jehol province to the puppet state, Manchukuo. Driving down the snow-covered and wind-lashed Mongolian desert from the extreme northeast, one Japanese column was within 5 miles of Chifeng on Feb. 27. A second offensive Is developing near the Jehol border town of Suitung. The third attack is on Lingyuan, where casualties were estimated at 1000 Chinese and 600 Japanese. After sealing Lingyuan's heights, the Japs expect to make quick time over the 73-mile highway to Jehol city. The fourth and latest drive entered Jehol from the southern tip of Manchuria about 40 miles north of the great wall.”

“Japs Just ‘Tin Soldiers’ Declares Chinatown Sage,” Toronto Star. February 27, 1933. Page 1. --- Adds "The Boys" Would Sooner Eat Them Than Rice --- ARE GETTING MAD ---- By ARCHIBALD LAMPMAN If you think Japan has anybody intimidated, just take a brief canter up Elizabeth St., Toronto's Chinatown.
It had been nearly a year since we last sat around the stove in Chen Tew's store with some of the local boys and settled eastern questions one right after the other with no effort at all. And, as the Japanese now seemed to be settling into a nice brisk stride in Jehol, we called again to-day.
"How are the boys feeling about?" we opened, coming to the point. "They're mad, all right," he says. "Before this there used to be a lot factions in Chinatown - now they're altogether. They'd rather eat Japanese than eat rice."

Page 1.

“Canada Votes in Favor Report Against Japan,” Kingston Whig-Standard. February 24, 1933. Page 1. ---- Dr. W. A. Riddell Says Faith of World in Possibility of Peaceful Settlement Is Shaken Structure of Security in Danger of Being Undermined. --- GENEVA, Feb. 24 - "It is unnecessary to emphasize the gravity of the decision the members of the League must take today declared Dr. W. A. Riddell, Canada's permanent advisory delegate to the League of Nations, when he supported on behalf of the Dominion the report of the League committee of 19. Adoption of the report today was immediately followed by the dramatic walking out of Japanese delegates, incensed at the report's condemnation of Japanese policy in Manchuria,
"The faith of the world in the possibility of peaceful settlement is shaken." declared Dr. Riddell, who although a member of the Assembly was not on the special committee which drew up the report. If this faith is destroyed." he added, "the structure of security, slowly built up on the foundations of scrupulous respect for International covenants, will be undermined,
"As that structure shows signs of being weakened, so will the prospects of reducing the world's burden of armaments be endangered, and the task of achieving international economic co-operation be magnified. For these reasons we must vote adoption of the committee's report.....
"The Canadian Government from the inception of the dispute has supported every effort to secure a solution by peaceful means," Dr. Riddell continued." It is scrupulously refrained from words and deeds that might have jeopardized the prospect of peaceful settlement, and has withheld judgment on the facts and merits of the dispute in the belief that premature, injudicious comment might have prejudiced success of the collective effort to restore a good understanding between China and Japan,  an understanding on which peace in the Far East depends,"

“JEHOL CAMPAIGN BEGUN BY JAPAN,” KIngston Whig-Standard. February 24, 1933. Page 9. ---- Large Army Being Poured In - China's Capital Seem's Dazed --- CHANGCHUN, Manchuria, Feb. 24 - Japan has officially started its military campaign to annex the rich Chinese province of Jehol to the Japanese-fostered state of Manchukuo.
The most powerful Japanese force massed in Manchuria since hostilities with the Chinese began seventeen months ago was being poured into Eastern Jehol today along two routes, about 150 miles apart.
A modernized Japanese army, with tanks, bombing planes and armored cars, believed to total 60.000, is expected to raise the flag of the Rising Sun in Jehol City, of Chengtefu, the provincial capital, in anywhere from a week to a month.
Opposing this army are 150.000 poorly equipped Chinese under several commanders.
A big Japanese force of cavalry, infantry and artillery was directed against Chaoyang. second largest city of Jehol. They closed eastern passages in the Great Wall of China, blocking the entry of fore Chinese troops into Jehol from that direction.
NANKING STUNNED NANKING, China, Feb. 24 - China's capital seemed dazed today by the news the Japanese campaign has begun.
The official Central Daily News was the only Chinese newspaper to comment, saying: "The only way out is to fight as we have never fought before."
The Chinese Government refused today to accede to a Japanese ultimatum demanding that Chinese troops be evacuated from the Province of Jehol.

“U.S. METAL HELMETS SHIPPED TO CHINA,” Kingston Whig-Standard. February 24, 1933. Page 13. ---- They Are Bit Rusty and With Linings Somewhat Moth-eaten ---- PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 24 - Two thousand metal helmets, made to protect United States soldiers during the Great War, had been shipped today to China to become part of the equipment of Chinese troops on the Jehol front. They were a bit rusty and with linings somewhat moth-eaten.
Albert B. Dreyfuss, head of the company which shipped the helmets Thursday, said:
"This is not the first time we had a chance to sell these helmets. About two years ago we had completed a deal with Greece and were ready to ship them when a Greek captain came along and objected to the moths. The deal fell through."
