Yesterday was my last Beaumaris dive for some time. The water was freezing but I still managed the usual array of shark teeth #carcharodonhastalis - fish jaw #actinopterygii - & my first fish vert. I’ve been so lucky to find some amazing windows into Australia’s ancient past, like this #PygmySpermWhale tooth & I can’t leave out the brain exploding Meg tooth #Carcharoclesmegalodon I have met some pretty nice folk along the way & been able to share these experiences with you guys Shortly I’ll be heading of to look through some different windows, which I’m sure you’ll get a peak at ✈️. #palaeontology #fossils #beaumarisfossils #australianfossils #miocene #sharkteeth

A very big thank you to @a_fools_experiment & the palaeontolgy crew at @melbournemuseum - Erich Fitzgerald - Tim Ziegler - & @palaeo_james_rule for their enthusiasm, patience & collective wisdom. Here’s @poppy_rocket with her donated partial macropod vert, first recorded evidence of kangaroos from the Beaumaris. #palaeontology #fossils #museumsvictoria #beaumarisfossils #australianfossils #kangaroos

Happy Fossil Friday! Brought to you by the unfairly named Rat fish, they’re actually quite pretty in the realz. This jaw fragment comes from the amazing Beaumaris site in Victoria. #fossilfriday #fossils #palaeontology #miocenefossils #miocene #beaumarisfossils #australianfossils #marinefossils #fossilfish

Before & After. I really don’t know how I spotted the one on the left, as you can see it was covered in growth & very dark, looked like a piece of iron stone & I nearly let it fall back to the watery depths. #FossilFriday #Carcharodonhastalis #sharkteeth #palaeontology #australianfossils #beaumarisfossils #fossils

Five Million Years In The Breaking. I was just a little nervous about the reconstruction of this Miocene whale jaw but I think we’ve given it back it’s smile. Thanks to @poppy_rocket for pics & film. @a_fools_experiment for hints & tips. & UHU for being SUPER! #australianfossils #beaumarisfossils #miocene #fossils #palaeontology #ancientwhales #cetacean

First prep & I’m done. The remaining calcium is pretty ingrained in the root surface & I don’t want to bleach the tooth colour out with more soaks. Shame about the enamel fracture but that likely happened as a feeding injury. #sharkteeth #fossilprep #fossils #beaumarisfossils #palaeontology #miocene #miocenefossils #AustralianFossils

It’s not always about the size. This petit little guy might have the scale of some finds but he’s my first Tiger shark & that makes him pretty special. #FossilFriday #Galeocerdo #tigershark #sharkteeth #beaumarisfossils #fossils #palaeontology #AustralianFossils

This photo does not do justice the the deep blues & greens in that big old tooth. Just a small selection of today’s finds. #beaumarisfossils #sharkteeth #fishplate #fossils #palaeontology #miocene #AustralianFossils

Nothin’ but the spines would probably make for a good song title but for this 5 million year old sea urchin that’s sadly all that remains. #FossilFriday #beaumarisfossils #AustralianFossils #Miocene #nature #fossils #palaeontology #SeaUrchin

Here’s a lovely hunk of 5 million year old whale bone with possible predation marks. The toffee colours in this fragment are beautiful. #FossilFriday #beaumarisfossils #beaumaris #miocene #fossils #palaeontology #whalebone #cetacean
