Watching Railway Men and I am petrified by how selfish people can be and how it ruins lives, so many lives. And yet people survive and help others to live through.
But it really just questions what even is the point of all these developments if we ignore human lives.
A parallel track of the show is the assassination of Indira Gandhi and how that had an entire community at danger. The dialogue summarising this all is "when a big tree falls there's bound to be a quake".
And I wonder what's my life's value in this vast chain of things. Does my govt care enough? Does these industries care?
Why is it hard for people in power to digest that if only the work for progress went on as planned, everyone will prosper and it'll be a beautiful world for everyone.

The Cost Of Profit
When you break the glass ceiling,
and sit amid those who call the shots,
when you talk of millions and billions,
and consider how to best spend them,
so they would swell even more...
... without ever trickling down
where they are most needed
... and from where they were stolen—
because how else does a starving nation
boast of billionaires and barons;
Do you think of
the Union Carbide factory in Bhopal?
or the Uphaar Cinema of Delhi?
or Mumbai's Kamala Mills?
or, perhaps, in your world,
tragedies happen only to others.
When you advise the new "dreamer"
to cut his costs to grow his enterprise,
when you reduce human beings to numbers—
Do you know then, that you are also preparing,
to reduce human beings to cinders?
For every corner cut, and an extra buck saved,
whose life did you use as a poker chip?
Those places of profit and privilege,
those places of greed and grind,
those places of money and might...
are graveyards waiting to be filled with corpses—
Ours, in a land where justice is a joke,
and Yours, in a land where ghosts still seek it!

I find it infuriating that Bhopal still hasn't received justice for what the city went through

railway men is so fucking good and also will make you so fucking angry at corporate negligence and government inaction. the most horrifying part is even after all they show, there’s stuff they left out, like the remaining gas being released and the town having to be evacuated a second time and then the uphill battle for justice and compensation for victims that’s STILL going on

Watching the show Railway Man rn and God nothing infuriates me more than AMERICANS I was gonna say government employees before AMERICANS IN POWER THAT CHOOSE TO DO NOTHING AND ALLL THE AMERICANS ON TUMBLR THAT ARE GOING TO COME TO ME I DON'T CARE I HAVE SM RAGE IN ME RN AND BEFORE I GO ON A RANT ON HOW THE SHOW IS GOOD I WANNA SAY THIS
Imbecile American can rot in their "free world" for they did nothing good out of global welfare and alliance
Yeah, now why are safety measures never working when you need them the most?! For those of who that came across this post and have no idea, this is about the Bhopal Gas Tragedy where about 8000 people were killed due to MIC, which is an extremely poisonous gas. And watch this show Indians should definitely watch this show. This show infuriates me to no extend over incompetent Government employees that don't know their job and corrupt politicians that can't fucking do atleast one thing right. And God save us for there are only "some" officials and people in the country that atleast do care. And that gives me hope for the future of the country. Men, women and children dying because there was no way of control and I have to say 'why are people so hard to restrain?!' when you tell them there's danger, don't get out of the train kyu train ke bahar aana hai, khud ke liye platform pe lashe giri dekhni hai— listen to the people that are looking out for your safety. Politicians, people in power, higher ranking officials that choose to sit silently for the danger isn't close to them are imbeciles, one that are legit the only harm to mankind. There's no gruesome crime than having a person in charge that doesn't have ounce of humanity.

The world's worst industrial disaster, the Bhopal Gas Tragedy took place in 1984. About 45 tons of an incredibly dangerous methyl isocyanate (C2H3NO) leaked out from an insecticide plant that was owned by Union Carbide Corporation - an American Firm. The toxic gas quickly spread to the densely populated areas around the plant. A total of approximately 15,000 - 20,000 people died from it and the remaining people who survived ended up suffering chronic respiratory diseases, eye irritation etc. After a thorough investigation, it was found that safety procedures in the plant was not properly adhered to - eventually leading to the aforementioned disaster. In the year 1998, the site was handed over to the State Government. Most recently in 2010, the Bhopal court convicted several former executives who worked for Union Carbide owing to the latter's negligence. In the wake of the 38th Anniversary of the Bhopal Tragedy Day, let us all remember the victims of this heinous Disaster - whose death had been caused by the negligence of a corporation.

spending my sunday night watching "the railway men" and it genuinely makes me so infuriated that a bunch of selfish people who couldn't care less about the average person's wellbeing properly caused one of the world's biggest industrial disasters , a gas leak of MIC which when mixed with water would boil into a an extremely toxic gas, which lead to, to date ; 25,000 total casualties and more than 100,000 people still affected by the gas leak, roughly 200,000 children were exposed to gas. and it's not even like the people that just came into contact with the gas were fine; on average bhopal, the city in which the gas leak took place; has a higher risk of cancer, deformations, miscarriages, and diseases. the area of bhopal is yet to be properly cleaned and it still has effects on the people residing in bhopal today.
one of the worst parts to me is the fact that the man that was supposed to keep the place properly managed, warren anderson; was briefly jailed before being bailed out and escorted back to the united states with what was essentially vip treatment. the indian government charged anderson with manslaughter charges along with his associates but anderson never showed up to court and was never prosecuted on these charges. that's what makes me so angry, that a guilty man was permitted to walk free and that nobody did anything. during the time of anderson's arrest the us was still spending representatives of its government to settle the situation and there is little to no justice for the victims and family of victims today. generations after the gas leaks still are suffering from the affects of this leak.
not my usual type of post, just wanted to bring some more awareness to the tragedy

two positions on effective nuclear power advocacy
1. everytime there's an attempt to build a nuclear plant in india there are mass local protests which get locked into cycles of state repression due to fear of meltdowns. that's actually also the case with building dams (narmada bachao), large mining projects (vedanta) and expansion of coal plants (thermal power plants in assam/tamil nadu.) dam opposition is actually the most powerful environmental force in the country.
people are right to believe that they will be uprooted from their lives and that they will not be adequately protected in the case of failures which is borne out by the the bhopal gas tragedy or sterlite gas leaks. nobody wants to live near these plants. so inevitably it is the world's most marginalised people who end up living near them. look at the data on land conflict watch regarding industrial land use and acquisition for power.
outside the comfortably stupid german green party caricature there are actually people with serious concerns about nuclear power. long term investments and public trust can only occur when energy prices decrease and plants operate reasonably safely. prices of nuclear hover around ₹4 per unit while solar is ₹2 per unit in india. and it is a lie to pretend global nuclear retrenchment happened due to a conspiracy by oil/gas instead of the extremely expensive price of failure at fukushima (200 billion usd or so.) westinghouse went broke. pretending nuclear waste is the concern and not meltdowns is missing the forest for the trees.
2. i think we need to recognise the way the Non Proliferation Treaties choke civilian nuclear power while not making any commitment to long term disarmament in nuclear states rather than berating people with misgivings about meltdowns. rn, nuclear security for me and not for thee is its basic principle. the Nuclear Suppliers Group has not approved membership for india because it remains a useful tool of superpower gamesmanship.
lack of nuclear fuel means most existing nuclear power plants in india run at 60% capacity because we don't have that much uranium and have to import it and widely available thorium requires breeding which is technologically and economically infeasible. technology sharing is obviously very difficult when you're not in the NSG.
the US betrayal of iran after their deal was struck is the other obvious roadblock to building nuclear capacity in the third world. restricting nuclear tech is another way that imperial noose seeks to maintain control of states trying to unseat themselves from domination. it is not actually a surprise that north korea continues to pursue a weapons programme because deterrence works. and ukraine, of the three countries that disarmed because of the NPT is currently being invaded. you either subsume to China/Russia/US for defence or you just don't get to have nuclear energy which is not the position of a world that wants nuclear energy.

The Bhopal Tragedy
On the night of December 2nd, 1984, a Union Carbide plant in Bhopal, India, began leaking 27 tonnes of the deadly gas methyl isocyanate. None of the six safety systems designed to contain such a leak were operational, allowing the gas to spread throughout the city of Bhopal. Half a million people were exposed to the gas and 25,000 have died to date as a result of their exposure. More than 120,000 people still suffer from ailments caused by the accident and the subsequent pollution at the plant site. These ailments include blindness, extreme difficulty in breathing and gynaecological disorders. In the Immediate aftermath, the health care system immediately became overloaded. In the severely affected areas, nearly 70% were under-qualified doctors. Medical staff were unprepared for the thousands of casualties. Doctors and hospitals were not aware of proper treatment methods for MIC gas inhalation. There were mass funerals and cremations. Within a few days, trees in the vicinity became barren, and bloated animal carcasses had to be disposed of. 170,000 people were treated at hospitals and temporary dispensaries, and 2,000 buffalo, goats, and other animals were collected and buried. Supplies, including food, became scarce owing to suppliers' safety fears. Fishing was prohibited, causing further supply shortages. Formal statements after a few weeks were issued that air, water, vegetation, and foodstuffs were safe, but people were warned not to consume fish. The number of children exposed to the gases was at least 200,000. Within weeks, the State Government established a number of hospitals, clinics, and mobile units in the gas-affected area to treat the victims.  A cohort of 80,021 exposed people was registered, along with a control group, a cohort of 15,931 people from areas not exposed to MIC. Nearly every year since 1986, they have answered the same questionnaire. It shows excess mortality and morbidity in the exposed group. Bias and confounding factors cannot be excluded from the study. Because of migration and other factors, 75% of the cohort is lost, as the ones who move out are not followed. A number of clinical studies are performed. The quality varies, but the different reports support each other. Studied and reported long-term health effects are: Eyes: Chronic conjunctivitis, scars on cornea, corneal opacities, early cataracts Respiratory tracts: Obstructive and/or restrictive disease, pulmonary fibrosis, aggravation of tuberculosis and chronic bronchitis Neurological system: Impairment of memory, finer motor skills, numbness, etc. Psychological problems: Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) Children's health: Peri- and neonatal death rates increased. Failure to grow, intellectual impairment, etc. Missing or insufficient fields for research are female reproduction, chromosomal aberrations, cancer, immune deficiency, neurological sequelae, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and children born after the disaster. Late cases that might never be highlighted are respiratory insufficiency, cardiac insufficiency (cor pulmonale), cancer and tuberculosis. Bhopal now has high rates of birth defects and records a miscarriage rate 7x higher than the national average. The site has never been properly cleaned up and it continues to poison the residents of Bhopal.
