Episode 5 - The Fight at Pewter Gym
Whee, time to meet Brock.
Old man guides Ash and Misty to the Pokemon Center. They act like it's a big deal that he charges 50 yen, but that's super cheap. I know it's 1997, but do you know what that is in USD? That's $0.60. It's 1/4 the cost of a single Poke Ball. Come on, guys.
Misty offers to help Ash face Brock, but he refuses. I have complex feelings about his refusal. On the one hand, she's a goddamn Gym Leader who uses a type that Brock's Pokemon have 4x weakness to, so. Yeah. Obviously. Use her Pokemon and sweep.
But on the other hand, despite a 4x weakness of their own, Butterfree can eat Brock's gym for breakfast. His ringer is Onix, who doesn't know any Rock moves. Ash currently has in his possession the intended solution for people who chose Hard Mode Charmander as their Starter.
Plus he's got that family legacy he's trying to live up to. He doesn't want someone else to earn this Badge for him. I can respect that.
Brock sends out Onix to Ash's Pikachu. Pikachu is completely screwed here. They panic and try to switch for Pidgeotto, but Ash refuses to let them. Pidgeotto would only be slightly better off anyway.
Onyx wraps Pikachu up in a Bind. Ash tries to use Thundershock and the moral of today's story is Type Invulnerability. Brock shit-talks Ash, saying it failed because Ash didn't do a good enough job raising Pikachu. What an asshole!
Unable to withdraw Pikachu due to the Bind, Ash is forced to concede his first attempt. His takeaway is that he needs to strengthen Pikachu, and that is definitely the fault of Brock's gaslighting.
After spending some time spinning a waterwheel to power up Pikachu's ineffective Electric attacks, it's time for round 2 starting with Pidgeotto vs. Geodude. Should have gone with Butterfree, man. Confusion trashes Brock's gym.
Brock explains Type Advantage to Ash for the second time while Geodude tanks Pidgeotto's Gust and blows through for the KO. Pikachu steps up with his supercharged electricity and somehow deals so much damage to Geodude that a x0 multiplier results in something other than 0.
(I would feel bad for Brock given that this is literally impossible, but he brought it on himself. The universe is punishing him for that shit earlier.)
Brock sends out Onyx who grabs Pikachu in a Bind again. Being of higher level and having slightly better Special Defense, Onyx is able to resist Thunderbolt long enough for Pikachu's special Cheater Lightning to run out and the rules to reassert themselves.
Brock tries to call it quits and let Ash leave with dignity, but then the sprinkles turn on due to a fire Pikachu started earlier. For a long time, this was another rules violation, but then they came out with the move Soak to justify it. Onix turns Water-type and suddenly a regular jolt of electricity can oneshot. Ash is once again ahead of his time.
After an interruption from Brock's siblings, Ash realizes that this match is thoroughly corrupted and can't really be counted as a fair win. So he concedes the challenge and leaves once again.
Brock gives him the badge anyway for "surpassing him in kindness" even though conceding the match one move away from victory was the same gesture Brock had done to him right before the sprinklers fired. Okay bro.
(This was a LOT of rule-breaking and drama that really could have been avoided.)

Kimberly Clark’s (KMB) shares have lagged staples as the market remains concerned about moderating POS trends in Dec/Jan and commodities; however, we see an upside to Street 4Q20 and ’21/’22 ests. w/commodity inflation reasonably reflected at current spots and view the bar as low into the print w/KMB trading at 16x P/E (30% discount to HPC peers vs. 20% hist. avg.),” noted Kevin Grundy, equity analyst at Jefferies, who rated the paper products giant “Buy” and set the price target at $152.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: MICROSOFT
MICROSOFT: The global technology giant is expected to report a profit of $1.64 in the fiscal second quarter, which represents year-over-year growth of about 8.6% from the same quarter last year when the company reported $1.51 per share.
The world’s largest software maker’s revenue is forecasts come at $40.23, up from the $36.91 billion reported the same quarter a year earlier.
“Q2 results likely highlight the durability of Microsoft‘s commercial businesses and conservatism in forward consensus expectations. After clearing tough Q2 product cycle comps and lingering COVID-19 impacts, strong secular positioning and an attractive multiple make Microsoft (MSFT) a top stock for the recovery,” said Keith Weiss, equity analyst at Morgan Stanley.
“At 26x CY22e GAAP EPS, MSFT trades at a premium to the S&P, warranted due to MSFT‘s premium return profile. Multiple expansion will likely come from gaining comfort in the durability of commercial business gross profit dollars.”
Johnson & Johnson, one of the world’s largest and most comprehensive manufacturers of healthcare products, will post earnings of $1.83 per share for last quarter of 2020.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: APPLE, TESLA, FACEBOOK
APPLE: The consumer electronics giant is expected to report profit growth of more than 12% of $1.41 in the fiscal first quarter of 2021 on sales of $102.61 billion, highlighted growth of over 11% from the year-ago quarter. That growth is largely driven by a strong demand iPhone handset, Mac computers, iPad tablets and wearables in the holiday season.
“Our December quarter revenue of $108.2B is 5% above consensus, while our EPS of $1.50 is 7% above consensus. We expect demand strength to continue and our FY21 revenue and EPS estimates are both 5% above consensus,” wrote Katy Huberty, equity analyst at Morgan Stanley.
“Given positioning into the quarter is muted after the rotation out of high-quality stocks over the past several months, we expect strong follow-through post-earnings and are buyers into the print. We also raise our price target to $152, from $144, as we mark our price target to market accounting for recent peer multiple expansion.”
TESLA: The California-based electric vehicle and clean energy company is expected to report a profit of $1.04 in the fourth quarter of 2020, posting a profit for the sixth straight quarter. The manufacturer of high-performance electric vehicles’ revenue is forecast to surge about 35% to $10 billion.
“A double-fly-wheel. We believe Tesla can leverage its cost leadership in EVs to aggressively expand its user base, over time generating a higher % of revenue from recurring/high-margin services revenue. Services drive the upside. We forecast Tesla’s (TSLA) network services EBITDA as a % of total TSLA EBITDA to reach 11% by 2025, 19% by 2030 and 37% by 2040. Tesla Service revenue includes automated driving, infotainment, upgrades, supercharging, maintenance, telematics, etc.,” said Adam Jonas, equity analyst at Morgan Stanley.
“Valuation supportive vs. tech. Including Network Services, Energy & Insurance to our core auto forecasts, at $810 Tesla trades at 25x EV/EBITDA in 2025 and 5x 2025 sales. Expensive vs. auto but not vs. software/tech comps.”
FACEBOOK: The world’s largest online social network is expected to report a profit of $3.16 in the fourth quarter of 2020, which represents year-over-year growth of 23.4% from the same quarter a year ago when the company reported $2.56 cents per share.
According to the Zacks Research, the social media conglomerate’s revenue will increase of 24.7% to $26.29 billion from the year-ago, largely driven by solid ad-revenue growth amid advertiser demand during the holiday period.
“Monetization Potential: We are positive on FB‘s monetization roll-out of Instagram as well as FB’s ability to continue to innovate and improve its monetization (Canvas Ads, Dynamic Ads, video). Combined with the high and growing engagement we see monetization upside going forward,” noted Brian Nowak, equity analyst at Morgan Stanley.
“Investing from Position of Strength to Drive Faster Long-Term Growth: We are modeling 29% GAAP opex (excl. one-time items) growth in 2021, implying an incremental $15bn in opex. Our base case model implies opex per employee moderates in ’21 while FB hiring remains roughly flat on an absolute basis. We believe FB will grow EPS at a 28% CAGR (2019-2022).”

According to the latest regulatory emission standards for non-road heavy duty vehicles powered by Tier 4 interim diesel engines, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandates engine manufacturers to focus on advanced technologies for emission control. Excavators, through a niche segment, has been witnessing hefty demand over the years. OEMs are currently concentrating on developing reduced or zero emission compact excavators, i.e. electric contact excavators. Volvo VE, followed by Wacker Neuson, first introduced a fully electric compact excavator that held the promise of zero emission along with reduced noise emission and ownership costs. E-compact excavator renting is currently a growing trend in market, says research.

Super Sonic Thieves Chapter 13
Chapter 13 - Croaked Ships
The Set Up:
Sonic, narrating: “Blaze, Silver, and Marine warned us of where the next villain appeared, and he was attempting to take control of the Sol dimension.”
Sly, narrating: “And just as appropriate, Sir Raleigh was the criminal handling the occupation here. Figures he’d try to take over the seafaring world here like the pirate he thinks he is. He was born to a rich family, but loved stealing other people’s riches. Last we dealt with him, he tried using a storm machine to churn the seas to stop ships.”
Sonic, narrating: “And it looks like he’s doing it again here, since when we arrived, there was storm clouds as far as the eye could see. We better find him, and stop him before he does irreversible damage here.”
-----
Zone Layout: The gang has unfortunately landed on the other side of the island Raleigh has docked his ship at, so they’ll have to pass through a Sol island jungle to get to his ship. Then it’s a trip on and in Raleigh’s gigantic pirate ship to find the frog himself. Perhaps Raleigh is hiding his storm generator on board as well?
Enemies:
Robot Walrus (Mallet): These angry metal walruses smack the hammer down to crush you. Carries/drops 15-17 coins and has a 10% chance of treasure to pickpocket.
Robot Walrus (Welder): If they aren’t working on fixing metal, they’ll turn their torches on you and burn you. Carries/drops 15-17 coins and has a 10% chance of treasure to pickpocket.
Robot Walrus (Shuriken thrower): These robot walruses toss metal starfishes like shurikens to smack you away. Carries/drops 19-21 coins and has a 25% chance of treasure to pickpocket.
Robot Squid: Robotic copies of Raleigh’s flashlight carrying squids. They still squirt globs of oil at you that make you slippery when they spot you. Carries/drops 19-24 coins and has a 50% chance of treasure to pickpocket.
Aquis: Flying robot seahorses that also shoot globs of oil to make slippery floors or make you slippery. Drops 19 rings when smashed.
Stormmister: It’s similar to Eggman’s earlier Toximister, but this one dispenses storm clouds that if touched, will attempt to strike you with a lightning bolt. You need to be moving to miss it. Drops 21 rings when smashed.
Treasures:
From Guards:
Lump of Bronze: Worth 90 coins and 45 rings.
Lump of Silver: Worth 110 coins and 55 rings.
Lump of Gold: Worth 130 coins and 65 rings.
From Pedestals:
Platinum Ship in a Bottle: Found near to the river in Act 1. Worth 2150 coins and 1075 rings.
Water Jewel: Hiding on the top deck in Act 2. Worth 2250 rings and 1125 rings.
‘Jeweled Scepter’: In plain sight in Clockwerk’s room, grab it before destroying the bird. Worth 2350 rings and 1175 rings.
The coins have the Sol emeralds as the design on them.
-----
Stormy Seas Zone Act 1: Dimitri and Silver take on the first leg of finding Sir Raleigh, which is actually getting onto his ship that is docked on the other side of the jungle island they are on. The player will use Dimitri’s swimming abilities and Silver’s psychokinesis to traverse the dense jungle, avoiding the enemies along the way. Silver’s psychokinesis will need to be used to either block or destroy spotlights so you won’t get shot at.
*At the start.*
Silver: “* Sigh* I wish we were coming back home under better circumstances. Seeing our world under this storm is saddening.”
Dimitri: “Hey, don’t worry, bro. You’re with the Cooper gang. We’ll put the bizness back to what it was before, you dig?”
Silver: “I dig… I think.”
Bentley, over the binocucom: “Just be careful through the jungle, guys. I’m pretty sure Raleigh’s set up plenty of traps to catch us in.”
---
Stormy Seas Zone Act 2: Carmelita and Blaze sneak their way onto the top deck, and listen in on Sir Raleigh as he hops around and talks about his plans. The player must stay out of his sight, or it’ll have to be done again. Soon, he’ll go a deck down, so it should get a bit easier to hide behind things. The main focus of his talking is of his storm generator, which happens to be another Clockwerk bird.
*At the start*
Carmelita: “We’ve boarded Raleigh’s ship, so we better look for him…”
Blaze: “Maybe we could entice him out with a cannon blast or 2?”
Carmelita: “That would work, less searching for us.”
*Some cannon blasts and hiding later, Raleigh comes to the top deck to inspect.*
Sir Raleigh: “Hey! Quiet down up here! I’m busy trying to figure out our new ship course for this place!”
A guard: “Sorry, someone fired the cannons out”
Sir Raleigh: “Cannons don’t fire by themselves! Find the person who did it!” *He turns around and starts hopping.*
Blaze: “Phew, that was close.”
Carmelita: “Yeah, but we better follow him.”
*After a bit.*
Sir Raleigh: “I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical about this place, but now that I see it for myself, it’s quite perfect for me. So much sea to see, so many islands to raid and plunder. Surely a pirate’s life here.”
Blaze: “Not if I can help it, you stupid frog…”
Carmelita: “We’ll nail him, just wait…”
*Later, a deck below.*
Guard: “Remind me why we are also sitting around for now?”
Sir Raleigh: “We’re waiting for our Storm Clockwerk below to turn the whole Sol Dimension stormy, so we can easily plunder this world.”
Guard: “I thought that raccoon who got you last time killed him, twice.”
Sir Raleigh: “He did, but that Eggman fellow somehow figured out how to build copies of him, and now we can control one as we wish! He’s better as a loyal servant than as an annoying leader anyway.”
Penelope, over the binocucom: “Huh? That’s strange…”
Bentley, over the binocucom: “It is?”
Penelope, over the binocucom: “I don’t remember him ever talking about Clockwerk copies, at least, not offering one to me. Now that I think about it, he did send me out quickly…”
Tails, over the binocucom: “He probably didn’t want you squealing any information to us. He’s really putting the hammer down on leaking information.”
Penelope, over the binocucom: “Jeez… I really was just a pawn…”
Bentley, over the binocucom: “It’s okay… you’re with us now, that’s what matters.”
Penelope, over the binocucom: “Yeah… I’m going to see what I can do about hacking the Clockwerk Owls while you guys smash them. Maybe I can figure out what’s going on.”
---
Stormy Seas Zone Act 3: Panda King and Marine head down to the lower decks and find the Storm Clockwerk up and running and creating electrical storms in the seas. The player can use Panda King’s fireworks to just use fireworks to blast apart the bird to pieces, while Marine plugs up leaks that may appear from the falling pieces and explosions. Then, it’s just a trip to the captain’s room to confront Sir Raleigh.
*At the start, on the sight of Clockwerk.*
Marine: “Argh, mateys! We’ve spotted the blight of a bird! It’d be working electrical conduits to the top o’ the ship and discharging into the atmosphere!”
Bentley, over the binocucom: “Thus, supercharging the air above and producing storms! Good job, guys.”
Panda King: “I assume you want me to use my fireworks to smash the bird to pieces?”
Tails, over the binocucom: “You got it! We better hurry, before it creates a storm too powerful to stop!”
Panda King: “Excellent. Prepare, fake Clockwerk, to become nothing but dust!”
*Upon destruction*
Panda King: “The bird… it is gone now.”
Marine: “Yar, let’s make haste to find the captain’s room!”
*While looking for the captain’s room.*
Penelope, over the binocucom: “Hmmm… interesting. Something left when it blew up.”
Bentley, over the binocucom: “Can you determine what it is?”
Penelope, over the binocucom: “Hard to say… it’s not a simple electrical reading… I can at least say, based upon designs you guys made of the original Clockwerk, it seemed to come from where… the ‘hate chip’ was located.”
Sly, over the binocucom: “It’s been a long while since we’ve heard about that thing…”
Penelope, over the binocucom: “I can say there is no hate chip though, from the wreckage you guys made, nor does it seem to be there anyway… Maybe Eggman attached something there to work it from far away?”
Tails, over the binocucom: “It’s not familiar to me. Eggman has dabbled in the supernatural though, if that is any help. I mean, he’s built a few bases on haunted grounds.”
Penelope, over the binocucom: “Hmmm…”
Bentley, over the binocucom: “So have a few of our villains, kind of a normal thing actually. We got laws limiting the use of supernatural things for evil uses.”
---
Stormy Seas Zone Act 4 (BOSS): Sly and Sonic enter his swamped Captain’s room to deal with the annoying frog…
Sir Raleigh: “Well, well, if it isn’t the lost raccoon and an annoying pincushion Eggman warned me about. You sure have been making a mess of my ship, haven’t you?”
Sly: “Only enough to stop you from pirating this world.”
Sonic: “Wait, this little frog is a nasty villain? He looks like he’s going to break into a dance. You know ‘Hello, my baby, hello, my honey, hello my ragtime gal’ ? ”
Sir Raleigh, sounding quite pissed: “Grrr… I was told by Eggman you’d be annoying, but that’s really low. I am not related to Michigan J. Frog at all!! Just because they create a cartoon that stars a frog that’s all happy and dances does not mean all of us are like that!”
Sonic: “I don’t know… you do got the top hat, and you’re old enough to need a cane. Look! He’s even got a record player in the back!”
Sir Raleigh: “Shut up, Shut Up, SHUT UP!!! I was just going to crush you, but now you’ve made it really personal, hedgehog!!! DIE!!!”
Boss: Sir Raleigh
Sir Raleigh fights like before, hopping around and trying to smack you with his tongue, or attempting to belly slam you on the lily pads. And like before, wait until he deflates to attack him, though watch out for the tongue still. If he was easy the first time around, this is going to be a walk in the park.
*When defeated*
Sir Raleigh: “Noooo… lost again… Why did pirating get so hard?”
-----
The Getaway:
Sonic, narating: “Soon after Sir Raleigh’s defeat, the storm clouds faded away, and the seas became calm once more. The Sol dimension was safe again, much to Silver’s, Blaze’s and Marine’s excitement. We couldn’t stay for long, since we had to drop Sir Raleigh off back at INTERPOL and return to our world again. I wonder where our journey is heading next...”
Next Time: There’s a tiger on the prowl in the cold jungle in Bamboo Blitz Zone.

Stop Pretending to Be a Victim
You may have had the pleasure of catching one of the classic Warner Bros. Roadrunner cartoons, the perfect option to watching Disney’s Mickey Mouse. While the cartoons were repetitious, they stayed extremely funny. Wile E. Coyote devoted his entire existence to a futile attempt to catch Roadrunner and eat him alive.
Despite Coyote’s best efforts, he always seemed to run off a cliff, suddenly look down and crash at the bottom. Roadrunner always honked a warning “Beep Beep,” but Coyote never seemed to get it. He was caught in a futile cycle of the persecutor who becomes his own victim.
In a way, we are all like Coyote, which is why I never tire of viewing that series.
Are We Ever Really a Victim?
You may have heard of the iconic Helen Keller of a previous generation. Helen suffered the supreme misfortune shortly after birth of becoming both blind and deaf, forever locked into her own world.
A profoundly inspiring film, The Miracle Worker, depicts the heroic efforts of her parents and caretaker to do everything humanly possible to give Helen a normal life. Helen actually became highly literate; an author of 12 books, and sought after speaker the world over.
While shit happens--and no one can forget the shock of 9/11--a careful examination of what lead up to this tragedy reveals that the U.S. had done much to provoke Arabs and Muslims to create Al Qaeda and inspire such a dastardly conspiracy. We can’t forget the day President George Bush decided to bomb Baghdad, bringing American troops into Saudi Arabia in Operation Desert Storm.
Why We End Up Playing Victim
We opt for victimhood because it is the easy way out. It requires no soul searching. We get to blame others without being blamed ourselves. We blame the rapist, the attacker, the racist and the religious bigot. People will often pay us handsomely to tell our story, and the media thrive on juicy content to entertain their bored viewers.
We finally get to be right. We justify positions we have assumed about the world since childhood. Mom and Dad were mean to us on various occasions. They slapped us, humiliated us and occasionally abused us. How can we forgive them? Soon enough the whole world starts acting that way.
I remember the zany TV series, McHale’s Navy, about a PT-boat lieutenant commander that continuously outwits his superior, Captain Binghamton. Whenever the captain is foiled, he looks up into heaven and asks God, “Why me? Why always me?” We laugh, but it is all too often us raising the question. The captain was mediocre. It took the lieutenant commander to bring any life to the party.
Victimization Is Always a Choice
Victimization is an unconscious interpretation of our experience. When we base everything on appearances, we fall victim often enough. I can never forget the moment in the epic film, Gandhi, where the Mahatma as a young man gets thrown out of a South African train for being “colored” and insisting on a first-class booth. A shocked Gandhi rises from the dust, scratches his head and begins to deal with the “real world” in very creative ways.
Nelson Mandela started out as a tribal chieftain who sought freedom for his people. He wanted to end South African Apartheid once and for all, and have an equal voice with the English and the Afrikaans. He ended up trying to detonate a bomb, was imprisoned, tried and confined to hard labor. As we see in Clint Eastwood’s Invictus, how Mandela decides to come to terms with the world and treasure his prison cell.
In that same cell, he becomes the model prisoner and develops a new vision of South Africa. His process of Truth and Reconciliation stunned the world.
Martin Luther King was an exceptionally bright student attending Harvard University. He could have gone on to live a comfortable life as a prominent Black minister in a segregated society. However, when Rosa Parks refused to give her seat to a white man on a Little Rock bus, King chose to side with his own people and end segregation. Like Gandhi, he repeatedly ended up in jail, where he did some of his best writing. King continually chose NOT to play victim, even when being monitored by the FBI.
The Shocking Cost of Blame
When you blame someone else, you give away your power. Who is the creator of your experience, you or him? It is within your own experience that he abuses you. By interpreting his actions as hostile, you increase the likelihood he will become even more hostile and you will violently retaliate.
When we read the “Sermon on the Mount,” and consider how Jesus advises us all to turn the cheek and love and forgive our enemies, it seems like a total fairy tale to us today, rather than a viable option. Few of us consider just how much forgiving our opponents and enemies actually empowers us. Divine love is a force that is very difficult to overcome. Perpetrators usually break down and sob. They can resist anything but total love and acceptance.
When you blame other people, not only do you disempower yourself, you lose all possibility of experiencing love, love from others, and love towards others. When you put conditions on who gets your love and who doesn’t, you cheapen love and rob life of all its vitality.
The less love in the world, the more suppressed is the quality of our lives.

How Transformation Put an End to My Act as a Poor, Innocent Bystander
Many years ago, fresh out of college, I was starry-eyed about the possibility of enlightenment and how the est training could shift ordinary people’s consciousness in extraordinary ways and supercharge their life. I had already heard about Werner Erhard being highly controversial, with everyone bitching about his never letting anyone go to the bathroom.
I took the plunge, doing the 60-hour training over a couple of weekends in a hotel ballroom. It was the most amazing experience of my life, in that it made real what I had only read about. It took me from being my nametag, body and mind to the space in which the galaxies spin. I realized on the heart level that the God we all worship is actually hiding out as each one of us. I was introduced to a new perspective, a context of self-responsibility, where I could look at everything that had happened to me up to that point as not accidental, but perfect.
Werner and the est trainers invited participants in all phases of the program to come from the perspective that that they are responsible for what happens to them, what they do to others, and even what another does to another. Over time, I developed an unshakable preference for empowerment, for shunning victimization. From thereon, in every single upset in my life, I had the growing sense that I had something to do with it.
The Alternative to Adversity: Change the World
Gandhi hated racism sanctioned by the British Empire, and ultimately chose to bring it down. Nelson Mandela hated being a disenfranchised citizen, and did whatever it took to end Apartheid. The early Christians chose to cling to their faith in the King of Kings, even though it meant being thrown to the lions. Even though a violent death awaited each of them, they chose to go with hymns on their lips. In the process, the Roman Empire was ultimately transformed into the Roman Catholic Church.
When you choose to experience injustice in a transformed manner, the power of exploitation is blunted. It is no fun to continue to persecute people who insist on thinking the best of you. When you choose the higher road, it is infectious. Who wants to opt out of love, joy and peace, when they are made abundantly available? In truth, we are all magnificent. It is just that we get so lost in our acts that we stop believing in ourselves.
President Obama was an Afro-American whose father abandoned him. He grew up in white society and continued to interpret his experience as a change agent. He ended up in Harvard, then in politics. Who would ever have predicted that this little boy from Hawaii would end up American President at a crucial point in history when the global economy had all but collapsed?
World Leaders Who Chose NOT to Play Victim
Abraham Lincoln grew up in a log cabin and was largely self-taught. He went nowhere with his life until he was past 40. When he got the big break, the South decided to separate from the Union, precipitating the Civil War. President Lincoln fought the war with extraordinary tenacity, forever ending slavery with his Emancipation Proclamation. Just before being assassinated, he decided to forgive the South for a thankless war.
When Winston Churchill was appointed Prime Minister, Adolph Hitler had totally armed Germany, already setting the stage for the Third Reich. He consoled his people, “I have nothing to offer you except blood, sweat and tears.” This same Churchill, after the Battle of Britain, commended the British pilots with the words, “Never have so many owed so much to so few.” This bulldog Brit joined forces with President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, ending the Great Depression and setting the stage for a new golden age.
Ronald Reagan grew up during the Great Depression, became a movie star, ran for Governor of California, and became a charismatic conservative U.S. President. He was actually shot in his very first month in office, yet went on to serve two full terms. Reagan went on to confront the Soviet Union and actually end the Cold War, becoming close friends with General Secretary Gorbachev.
Each of these leaders saw the greatest reversals as unparalleled opportunities.
Our Call to Greatness
Today, we are challenged by terrorism, continuous military intervention and severe climate disruption. The nominated female candidate of a major party won the popular vote, only to be defeated on an electoral technicality.
If you want to play victim, you will never have more company.
Lot’s of people are convinced things are truly hopeless.
Yet, think of this. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton broke all norms in running for the highest office. Bernie Sanders reached out with his heart, despite limited means, and created a popular revolution. These people need never consider themselves victims. They have set a powerful precedent that will never be forgotten.
Now the torch has been handed to you and me to play big. We know there is zero satisfaction in playing small. We know that heroes are ordinary people in extraordinary times. We know that we have something to do with everything that happens.
If we look at Buddha, Christ and Muhammad, we see transformed people who overcame tremendous odds, even crucifixion, to reach out to humanity for thousands of years. They did what they did to be an inspiration to us, to remind us all of our divinity, that together, we can do even greater things.
