You know, if you don't let me look at the pictures, I'm gonna learn everything I know about demons on the street.
Knock yourself out.
Thank you. See? No biggie. I can totally handle it.

Underrated Flooded Spuffy parallel is in that episode, Willow is worried because Buffy ‘isn’t big with the full range of human emotions’ since she got back, and tries to get an emotional reaction out of her by saying dumb, clearly untrue things to piss her off and she does not succeed. Then later Spike does the same thing (makes dumb jokes about killing people when he literally can’t) but to try and make Buffy laugh instead and actually DOES get a genuine reaction out of her. Because the thing about it is—and really the whole point of the scene—is he matches her tone. He ‘understands her without words,’ according to the script. That’s why it works for him. Because Spike gets her to laugh by appealing to the dark sense of humor Buffy has in this episode, the one that’s scaring all her friends and making them give her silent, worried looks. But Spike gets it, he understands, because he knows the real reason Buffy is hurting and struggling so much and doesn’t expect her to be okay or back to normal. And around him, she doesn’t have to pretend to be either.

Hey, don’t cry. I’ll kill them for you if you want. It’ll give me a hell of a headache, but I could probably thin the herd a little, okay?

Okay so fun fact about Flooded: unless I’m missing something, the script never actually describes the M’fashnik demon as a fish demon. It doesn’t really give any description. My guess is that the fish-like features were added later as a nod to the fact that the central theme of the episode is flooding/water.

Precious scene between Spike and Buffy, a weird sort of heart-to-heart.
