Care and Maintenance for Butcher Blocks  Countertops and Kitchen Islands.

Wood is the healthiest building material in this universe. The solid wood is very sturdy and reliable. Wood can also last for a long time without requiring an excessive protection. But since wood is a natural living material, so it can react to different  environments in specific ways. So, it will be better if we know the basic maintenance for wood since most of our furniture made from wood.

You can coat the top, bottom and sides with mineral oil. Pay attention to the end grain area, cause it is most likely absorb humidity through. Don’t miss each cut or drill you make in the panel. For kitchen tops, you can use Proterra mineral oil cause it is also designed ti come in contact with foods. But for the place that involved great deal humidity mineral oil will not give you best solution. You can use polyurethane or other similar finishing instead. You can use soft brush to apply the mineral oil on top of your wood furniture. After you apply that, let it for about 20-30 minutes. You can remove the excess with an absorbent paper towel. It is recommend to apply 2-3 successive coat of oils when the top is first installed. Then you can only apply one layer coat once per several months. If you sand your wood furniture to remove some scratch, then you have to coated again. Only on the area you are sanded before.

To maintain your wood furniture, you can scrape or brush away any food residues on its surface periodically. You can wash it with warm soap water and dry it using cloth or towel. You can apply mineral oil every time needed. Avoid extreme heat sources like stoves near your wood furniture unless there is appropriate insulation between the heat sources and the top. Don’t spill vinegar on wood that coated with mineral oil finishing, cause it can be cupped or cracked. Corrosive chemicals can cause irreversible depreciation to your wood.

If there is significant difference between topside and the bottom side of panel, you can place the top on flat, concave side facing down. Place some fairly heavy objects on the convex side. Wait for 12 hours then the panel will straighten completely. To repair the end splits, you can mix wood sand with small amount of water-based wood glue and fill the cracks thoroughly. Let it for 15-20 minutes than sand the the area with a 120 grit sand paper and then oil the top freely. As for scratches, cut marks and food stain, you can sanding the wood than coated that with mineral oil again. Using polyurethane based finishing might not have a maintenance at all but if there is scratches, cut marks or other damages, it will be difficult to fix.
