Ooo yes horror is scary af for me, I have low tolerance and might get nightmares. That being said though, I do have horror ideas sometimes, but every time I attempt to write them I’ll spook myself even if the story isn’t that good ;-; tragic - Book
hi, book!!! FELLOW SCAREDY CAT //SHAKES UR HAND
my low horror tolerance is for visual medias usually tho. tv shows, movies, games, comics. i once read a junji ito manga and i was horrified for DAYS.....
when it comes to writing though, my tolerance is higher cuz with writing theres nothing you can See, horror has to be conveyed through sheer concept and writing tone/voice. WHICH IS INCREDIBLE, I DONT UNDERSTAND HOW HORROR WRITERS CAN DO THIS. while i havent read much horror lit, the ones i have read just have this undeniable voice in the words or have a concept thats wrong in the perfect way to create a creeping sense of horror, a mounting tension.
ive never been able to pull horror off in writing. both horror and comedy are working on Things That Dont Fit, so when i have concepts of Things That Dont Fit, my tendency is to spin it into humor and a punchline. it is very difficult for me to spin the other direction into uncanny-ness, eerie-ness
off the top of my head, i think the farthest ive gone is writing some descriptions that are tamely Creepy, which is some kind of offshoot horror i figure.
like i had one fic in a prev fandom that took place in a dream-loop but the dreamscape kept falling apart so i had bits like this "Todd turns to see the treats on the table begin to melt into globs of black. The chairs are beginning to sink into to the ground and the cotton candy sky is unspooling its thread."
but. again. my instinct is to make it funny. like so: "“Great,” Todd sighs, grabbing a rock from the ground and throwing it at the cottage. It was the wrong move, because the cottage shatters like a pane of glass to reveal crawling static behind it.“Oh, for fuck’s sake!”"
LIKE IDK. it's what makes horror so fascinating and so DIFFICULT for me is that it's working on a similar framework of something i DO know how to do
but it's in a completely different direction
it's incredible, from a genre standpoint. it's why i also think a story that can do BOTH horror and comedy while not slipping on the effectivity of either mood, is a story i one day wish i could write.....
