Life’s Different Now | Modern! Kakashi 2/?

Summary: Small dinner at Shisui’s house getting prepped for a Obito and Rin’s wedding. MC’s job/adaption to being back is discussed and finds out that their latest project is with someone in particular.

“‘Remodel my house, I got everything you need,’ he said,” you muttered to yourself as you tried to lower a circular saw onto the orange flat bed cart. “‘Except I have no power tools and only three screw drivers.’” you spat as you tried to move the wood planks over to better fit your newly acquired power tool. You had always been better at doing things with your hands than Shisui, but for him to only have three screwdrivers in his entire house left you nearly speechless and with a pricey credit card bill from Home Depot.

Brushing off the saw dust, you frowned knowing that you probably should have changed out of your work outfit before going to the hardware store, but oh well. Down the aisle, you could see Itachi coming toward you, a gallon of paint in each hand. “Can you tell me why you are getting paint for the main room if you haven’t even finished the kitchen?” he asked as he added the gallons to the cart.

“That paint’s actually for the kitchen and the main room. I’m ripping those terrible cabinets out this weekend and putting new ones in, but I’m going to paint them this black color and then have that color also as accents in the main room,” you offered as you tapped the cans with your foot. Despite your explanation, you could see the uncertainty in your cousin’s eyes. “You just gotta trust me on this. I promise it’ll look good.” you offered as you started to push the cart towards the front of the store. “We should also go before I spend more money on power tools though…”

“I was going to stop you if you tried.” he gave a small smile as he followed.

The two of you checked out and began your way back to Shisui’s place. You, along with some others in your friend circle were meeting tonight for dinner and to potentially discuss some of the logistics of Obito and Rin’s wedding. It wasn’t until the fall, but Obito was the first out of your generation in the family to get married, so it was a bit of a big deal, and the stronger that the core wedding party was, the less haggling you would get from more distant members.

Rin had also been given a stack of coupons from one of her patients that were for BOGO pizza and pasta at one of the local restaurants with no limitations, so you all were going to take advantage of that. Truthfully, that was the real reason for the dinner, but you were going to pretend like you were all functioning adults and have goals.

Pulling in front of the home, you could see two other cars already parked. You had yet to be able to match each car to its owner, so you were at a loss of who was actually home. Shrugging to Itachi as he took the keys out, you spoke. “Well, at least we’re not last,” you offered, stepping out of the car. Then looking over the top of the car, you scrunched your face at him, “I think if we ask nicely, we can get Shisui to unpack the car. You know, because…” you trailed off racking your brain to think of a reason to manipulate your brother into hauling everything in through the snow.

“Because we were already so thoughtful by going to Home Depot on a Friday to pick up his stuff,” Itachi offered, a small smirk upon his face as he locked the car. “It’s the least he could do.”

You copied his smirk as the pair of you started to walk to the front door. As you made your way in and took off all the layers necessary for the arctic temperatures that plagued you, a sweet voice called out to you.

“I heard you were back in the country, but I was wondering when I was finally going to get to see you again!” she laughed out.

“Rin!” you smiled as you went over to hug her. Giving her a tight squeeze, you continued your smile. “Where have you been and how on Earth were you able to skip out on all of the holiday parties?” you asked. “Please tell me how- the only way I had found was to be an ocean away.”

She rolled her eyes, “I was working, the hospital is so busy this time of year; it’s nearly impossible to leave.” she answered with a shrug. “I did get a talking to by Obito about how many people were wondering where I was, but luckily they had you to distract them, so thank you,” she laughed.

“Speaking of Obito, where is he?”

Motioning you to come join her in the living room, she answered, “Him and Shisui went to go pick up dinner and drinks. I guess it takes two?”

“Uchiha’s go in packs, you should know this.” Kakashi teased as you came into the room. “There are very few exceptions.” he finished with a nod to you.

“You’re not wrong…” you admitted, sitting down in a chair. “Do we have an ETA on the boys? I kinda skipped lunch, because I didn’t like the catering at work.” you asked, now knowing that was a mistake and that you would not be repeating that any time soon.

Hearing that, Rin’s eye widened a bit. “Wait…” she interjected. “You have a job already? Hasn’t it only been like three weeks?” she asked, her uncertainty evident. Then quickly shaking her head, she apologized, “Sorry- not that it’s surprising you could get a job, but wow, that’s just fast, and isn’t architecture competitive?” she added hastily.

You gave a small chuckle, “It’s okay, don’t worry.” Pulling your legs up onto the chair, you filled her in. “I work for a private architecture firm. They have a sister branch overseas that I worked with all throughout my masters, so it was an easy transition. I started right after the new year.”

“Wow...” she trailed for a moment, still processing it. Couldn’t blame her honestly. You had better odds of getting struck down by lightning than finding a decent job right out of college. Straightening up a bit, she nodded, “Well I’m glad you’re settling easily.”

“Oh that’s literally the only thing I have going for me right now.” you gave out a small chuckle trying to hide the instability in your life right now. “I don’t know how y'all did it,” you offered. “Finding an apartment, a car, insurance, all that stuff that you need to be an adult… I literally feel like I’m drowning half the time.” you kept your voice light to lift the weight of the truth.

“We didn’t pack up our whole life and moved across the world with 2 weeks notice.” Itachi offered as he handed you a drink. “You’re doing everything all at once.”

You shrugged. “It’ll get done. Always does” you let out a small laugh, trying the mask any uncertainty that was in your voice. Best not let them know that you were still trying to decide if this was the right decision.

Rin nodded as she sat down in the chair next to yours. “Right, and you’re you, so you’ll be fine.” she affirmed. “But, do you have good projects yet at work? Or are they making you do boring beginner stuff?”

A genuine smile came upon your face. “Actually, kinda?” you nodded. “There’s a small college like 20 miles away from here and it needs to be completely remodeled, so I’m on that task. It’s kinda nice, because I like to focus on interiors, and you know, there’s not a whole lot that needs to be done exterior wise there.” you said.

“Wait… Are you remodeling Jenkins?” she inquired, giving a quick glance around the room.

“Uh, yeah I think that’s the name? Why?”

Rin smirked as she looked across the room. “Kakashi, isn’t that your college?” she interjected.

He nodded. “Yeah and it needs the renovations. A bunch of ceiling tiles started falling down in the lab last semester. Scared a bunch of undergrads.” he shrugged as if it were nothing.

Tapping your arm, she looked at you. “Well it looks like you have someone there-” she started but was interrupted by a loud pounding on the door. “Oh- I guess they made it here? Or that’s Asuma and Kuernai?” she murmured as she stood up to go help whoever it was. “Itachi, can you come here? I have a feeling they tried to carry everything in with one trip…” she clenched her jaw nervously.

“Please save the pesto,” you pleaded as they both left the room.

Then looking back over to Kakashi, you continued. “I always forget that you teach too.” You knew that he had graduated with his doctorate in chemistry last year, but you just never connected the dots of him being a professor now. “What are you teaching this semester?”

“Gen chem and ochem,” he replied. “Both lab and lecture,” he slightly frowned. “I used to only do the lab portion of them, but our lecturer quit, so I got roped into doing the lecture too…” he said, enthusiasm lacking in his tone.

“Isn’t that a lot…?” you asked. You weren’t quite sure how science classes worked, but with all of your engineering classes, the lectures and labs were taught by two different professors, and seldom did one of your professors teach two different classes without someone helping.

He nodded reluctantly.

“Well, I guess I’m going to have to go to one of your lectures then.” you teased, now trying to evade the fact that he was probably under a lot of pressure now.. “You know, to get a better feel of how the professors and students interact with their space- architecture stuff.” you smirked as you saw this statement make him recline a bit.

Giving a quick shake of his head, he tried to persuade you. “I’m not any good at lecturing. Really.” he insisted. With others, he probably would have dropped it there, but he knew you were persistent. “You could come to my office hours if you want instead.”

“Oh I'll do that too” you nodded, “Remember, I still owe you for that coffee a few years back.”

Technicolor (Shalaska) Chapter 1 - Catrina

A/N: Hello! Hope you had a great Christmas if you celebrate it! I’m back with the first chapter of Technicolor, a 4.2 words mess that just came out of my brain and I hope you like it. It’s fanfiction, so loosen up!

Story summary: The powerful Alaska Thunder knew her life was boring, like a monochromatic painting she was stuck in. So when she meets a charming mess with thick lips called Sharon Needles, Alaska knew she would be the perfect push that her life needed to go into technicolor.

Chapter summary: Sharon crashes into Alaska’s life in weird circumstances, making her to realize she’s nothing she had expected. But one way or another… Alaska likes it.

Chapter one: “Pictures”

It was gonna be a rough day and Alaska knew it. She knew it from the moment the sun started raising up and the light attacked her eyes through the window. She rolled her body on the bed, escaping from the sunlight as her arms scratched looking for something to hold. She finally opened her eyes with surprise and confusion when she didn’t find that something.

Alright, that something didn’t exist. She forgot the fact that se lived alone. Again. Her head burned with that thought.

Her mother was probably right, she needed someone. More specific, a wife, but her mother wouldn’t like that. She still dreamed about Alaska having a handsome husband and children on a big old house even when her daughter had told her she liked women.

Alaska was sick of that idea and prayed everyday of it to never happen.

She sighed as she made her best to get off of the bed, the sheets feeling like roses against her skin protecting her from the cold weather, the pillow smelling delicious. She wanted to stay and sleep a little more, but her million of responsibilities couldn’t wait.

With her eyes still half closed and her mind stormed with diverse thoughts about the day she just stared, she took a quick shower and got dressed with her formal black pencil skirt and a white blouse over her underwear. She reached her phone as she put her black high heels on sitting on the bed and walked through the hall and stairs to the kitchen. She knew the salad Willam made the day before was still there, making Alaska’s necessity to cook luckily null. She was a mess cooking. At the beginning, her mother thought that was the reason she hadn’t a husband. Alaska laughed at the memory of her mother telling her about some cooking lessons (“to find a cute guy!” was what she had said), and her smile fading as she told her how disgusting men were.

Alaska turned her phone on only to go to the contacts list and press on the first name that popped up.

“Hello Miss Thunder! Good morning! Did you sleep well?” the sweet voice of her assistant on speaker received her.

“Yeah Courtney, I did” she replied with a smile, even when she knew Courtney couldn’t see her. She started to comb her long blond hair in front of the mirror next to the stairs, waiting for it to get dry. “What about you and your little project for the office? Any trouble?”

“Not yet, Miss! Everyone is arriving with their children. It’s adorable! Oh, Harry just arrived! And with his daughter!”

“Really? How is her?” Alaska asked, her smile becoming bigger.

Harry had been working on Alaska’s insurances company even before she was in charge. He was one of her best employees, always early and always ready for work, always helping Alaska. She had made a great friendship with the older man, who had told her about his beautiful family; his wife Theresa and his wonderful daughter Sharon.

“Well, she has pretty black hair, and looks a lot like Harry” Courtney said and Alaska giggled, finishing combing her hair. “She looks like she popped out of a horror movie”

That was definitely Sharon.

Alaska remembered the picture Harry had on his desk. A little girl with no more than 7 years of age in a Halloween decorated background. She was dressed as a witch, holding a plastic pumpkin. Alaska thought she was adorable.

She had listened stories about her a thousand times, Harry always said his Sharon was a little special.

Even when Alaska never thought of having kids, she loved them. And Harry’s daughter seemed just too cute to ignore.

“Gotta go Court, but I’ll be there for the party later. Be careful, okay?” she took the phone once her hair was perfectly done.

“Of course, Miss Thunder! Thank you for letting me do this, you’re the best boss. Bye!”

Alaska didn’t bother to answer and finally hung up with a impossible to erase smile since Courtney’s words made her pride raise.

A couple of knocks in the door made her jump in her spot. “Alaska! I’m here! Open the door!” someone yelled from the other side.

Alaska groaned, walking to receive Willam. Today was work day for her and Alaska would drive her to a photoshoot near to her work building.

“You’re early” that’s everything Alaska said once she opened the door for Willam to come in.

“You would be mad if I was late so shut up” the shorter girl said before grabbing Alaska’s arm and forcing her head down to kiss her cheek. “Good morning to you too, bitch. Have you eaten yet?”

Alaska is about to say no, when she analyzed the probabilities. Willam would be mad about it, and she would start talking about how important breakfast is, which Alaska doesn’t give a fuck about.

“I was waiting for you” she sighed.

“Alaska, we’ve talked about this a million times, you’re a terrible liar” Willam walks inside the like it was her own, going to the kitchen Alaska and throwing her purse on the couch in her way.

Alaska automatically closed the door and followed Willam. She looked at her couch, already filled with Willam’s purse and coat, and even when she wanted to yell at her for being a disaster, she only breathed out loudly.

“I’m not lying, I was busy”

“Ugh, how do you even survive? All I see are instant soups and rotten bread in your kitchen” Willam said in distaste, looking in the drawers something eatable.

“When will you stop worrying that much about me?” Alaska giggled as her mood changed. She opened the fridge to take the salad she had cooked last night.

“Hmm, never maybe? You’re fucking rich Alaska, and you survive from this shit? You could go to any fancy restaurant and order everything in the menu without any trouble. You don’t have to depend on my fucking food”

“Again, I’m fine, Willam” Alaska sat on the table and invited her friend to sor next to her. “Now come here and eat with me”

“Whatever. Always you’re healthy” with a sigh Willam took a fork and handed it to Alaska.

“It’s cute the way you worry about me even when you say you don’t give a fuck” Alaska said with a sly smile making her friend to roll her eyes once she sat next to her.

“It’s not that, your mom would kill me if she knows I let you die” the sentence, even when had a little of truth in it, made Alaska chuckle.

“She would be devastated, wouldn’t she?” she said without stopping chewing a piece of tomato.

“Eww, that’s disgusting! Swallow before you fucking talk” this time Alaska was the one who rolled her eyes, pricking some lettuce with a fork. “And don’t joke about that. Your mom would probably get worse than the time you told her you eat pussy and instead of dicks”

“Don’t remind me that!” she replied in the middle of Willam’s laughter. She couldn’t help laughing with her. They stayed silent for a moment after that; Alaska eating and Willam checking her phone until Alaska spoke again. “By the way, she called me last night”

“Your mother? Calling you like everyday just to control your life as she used to do when you lived with her? Such a surprise” Willam said in a sarcastic tone, not bothering to look up of her phone. Alaska looked over her shoulder, she was checking porfiles in her favorite dating app, which she talked wonders about. She even tried Alaska to install it once, but fortunately she didn’t get it. “Sounds interesting tho, she never calls you at night. What did she want?”

“Just to check everything was fine before go with my dad to Florida. She asked about you, I told her you were sucking some old man’s dick out there”

“Accurate. And aw, Christina is a cutie. She’s the only one that actually worries about my ass”

“She also said she’s visiting us next month” Alaska said and this time Willam sighed.

“I’d rather die. But whatever. Her food is good. And maybe she can make you eat better and fix your life for fucking once” she said, gaining a groan from her friend.

Alaska’s time with Willam used to pass really fast, they talked about any dumb stuff that could cross their minds and could bring a whole conversation out of it. Alaska knew that was why they had an amazing friendship.

“It’s almost nine, we should get going” Alaska sighed, looking at her watch. “I don’t wanna let Courtney alone in the office so long”

“I still don’t get all the parents party thing she did today. What was it for?” Willam waited for Alaska to finish her salad before she got up and took her stuff from the couch.

“Just for fun. She said when her father worked as a lawyer he took her to his office every year and since almost all the office have kids we thought it would be great for them to bring them and learn what their parents do for living and how they break their ass everyday to pay the bills”

Alaska took her purse, work backpack and coat as Willam replied with a simple “cool”. She was already going to the door when Alaska finished grabbing everything she needed for her day at work.

Ten minutes later, Alaska stopped the car in the spot designed for her in front of the huge building. The windows were open as usual but this time she didn’t see people with papers and laptops in their hands walking around as she got to the door. No, this time she saw kids running, playing, laughing with their parents. It was such a pretty scenario Alaska loved to see.

“Okay so I’m gonna go now, thanks for the ride” Willam got out of the car in a messy way, holding her purse and the coffee Alaska has bought for her before. “Bye bitch!”

Alaska didn’t bother to turn around and reply, she simply waved at her friend and continued her way to the door. Inside, the receptionist was in her usual spot in her desk waiting to meet her. She was, along with Alaska and Courtney, one of the youngest people in the company.

“Good morning, Jinkx” Alaska smiled at her, taking the assistance book and checking who had arrived before her. She took a pen and signed on the current date, before looking up at the ginger girl in front of her. “What a day, am I wrong?”

“And it’s only starting!” Jinkx said with a grin. “And good morning, miss Thunder. Do you want me to organize your schedule and send it to you now?”

“Yeah, that would be great. After that you can go home” Alaska said taking her coat off. She looked at the floor just one second and when her eyes were on Jinkx again, she could her huge smile.

“Are you serious, miss Thunder!?”

“Yeah, sure. Take the rest of the day off. It’s Friday and I only have five meetings, plus all this family party thing is making my heart soft. You said your mom was on town right? Go visit her” she said simply.

“You are definitely the best boss ever, Alaska!” she wanted to correct Jinkx and make clear how much she disliked being called Alaska at work but the girl seemed so happy she didn’t wanna ruin it, so she just smiled. “I’m gonna organize your meetings for today and send them right now ma'am!”

Alaska nodded and walked through the office, greeting people and children and even more children she would ever imagine. Any kid seemed to be afraid of her at the beginning, since none of them wanted to say hi, until their parents told them she was the boss and immediately their shyness disappeared. The kids probably didn’t know what that meant, but the word sounded powerful.

“Hello! This is Lucy, my best friend. She likes your hair” a little girl said to Alaska, showing her a teddy bear. Her mother laughed nervously, holding her shoulders.

“She has a lot of imagination” she said to Alaska.

“It’s fine” she smiled, getting on her knees to be at the same height that the little girl. “What’s your name, sweetheart?”

“Natalie, miss”

“Well Natalie, mine is Alaska. Nice to meet you” she caressed the teddy bear in her pretty little hands. “And thanks, Lucy! You’re sooooo pretty”

“Lucy says you’re pretty too!” the little girl smiled with excitement, holding out the teddy bear.

“That’s going right to my self-esteem” Alaska joked. She looked down at the purse and backpack in her hands and sighed. “Gotta go, it was a pleasure to meet you and your friend. Will see you around”

“Thanks Alaska!” Natalie smiled wide.

Alaska got up and walked to her office at the end of the hall. When she got to the door, she realized two things: one, it was already open and two, someone was lying on the pink little couch on the corner she used to lay on in her breaks.

She frowned and got closer to get a better look. It was a girl with abundant black hair and pair skin, her eyes were closed so Alaska just guessed she was asleep. She looked back at the door, thoughtful. Her office was supposed to be closed until she arrived, Courtney knew that. Then why was it open? And who was the girl in her couch?

The girl opened her eyes slowly, making Alaska breath in with nervousness. She got up, sitting on the couch with slow moves as she was just waking up.

“What the fuck!?” she gasped in a mix of surprise and confusion when her look finally fell on Alaska. “Who are you?”

“I think I should be the one doing questions since you’re in my office” Alaska joked as she scratched the back of her neck and looked down in an attempt to relax.

“Oh… you must be Alaska” her surprise seemed to fade away as a sly smile appeared on her lips. “My father told me a lot about you”

Alaska winked a couple of times, hoping she misheard. “Your what?”

“My father. He works here” the girl said, fixing her hair and nodding at Alaska, almost convincing her she wasn’t lying.

Alaska walked to her desk to leave her purse, backpack and coat. She would leave them in the pink couch usually, but since the girl was there, Alaska didn’t wanna get too close.

“So… who’s your father?” she asked casually, trying to not sound as upset as she was internally. Who in the hell would be so irresponsable to leave her daughter in an office that wasn’t theirs?

“Sharon! There you are!” a yell sounded from the door. Alaska turned on her heels quickly, not believing her ears. There was Harry, shaken up and with a relaxed look in his eyes. “Don’t disappear like that, I’ve been looking for you”

“Sorry dad… at least I had the chance to meet your friend” the girl smiled from the couch, pointing at Alaska with her eyes.

“Oh, miss Thunder” Harry greeted a very shocked Alaska. “I’m so sorry for this mess in your office”

“I just wanted to sleep a little bit” Alaska’s eyes immediately went to the girl, who was talked as the most innocent human being.

“I know, darling. I know. Now come here” Harry said, smiling lovingly at her. She got up and ran at him, turning to Alaska when he placed a hand on her shoulder. “Miss Thunder, I’d like to introduce you my daughter Sharon”

Alaska was speechless. All the anger had gone, only a mix of confusion and shock was left.

“Your… daughter?” she swallowed hard. Luckily for Alaska, those years in the company had taught her something very important: how to react fast. “I’m sorry, today isn’t my creative day. Hello Sharon, nice to meet you finally. Your father had told me wonders about you”

She walked through the room to them —Sharon seemed a little bored since Alaska had came back to her mind and it made Alaska wondered if her confusion was funny for her— holding her hand out, ready for Sharon to shake it.

Sharon smiled as she shook her hand, and even when is was the fakest smile Alaska had ever seen, it was cute. No, wait, why did she think it was cute? It wasn’t. The little wrinkles besides her eyes and her breathtaking eyes and her pale cheeks and her huge —surely fake too— lips weren’t cute. Or at least that was what Alaska tried to convince herself of. After all, that would be weird.

Alaska let her hand go and she regretted it immediately. Her skin was so soft, she could touch it forever. But again, that’d be weird.

“Miss Thunder is the CEO of this company. I’m sure you’ll learn a lot from her, sweetheart” Harry said proudly as Sharon rolled her eyes.

Sharon opened her mouth, ready to talk when someone knocked the door. It was Courtney, with her agent in her hand and a baby in the other. “Hello! Sorry for stepping in, but one of Harry’s clients just called for assistance”

“Oh, could you tell them I’m busy? I’ll call them later” Harry said with pity. Alaska’s eyes went down just to see Sharon smirking at her.

That was enough, she needed to do something. Even when she knew she would regret it.

“Go, Harry; clients are our priority, remember?” Alaska said with a persuasive grin, again, one of the things the company had taught her. “Sharon can stay at my office”

“Would you take care of her while I take the call?” he asked, still unsure. Alaska nodded, her smile becoming bigger and tilting her head from one side to another.

“Come on dad, I can take care of myself, I’m not a little girl” with Sharon’s words, Harry finally gave up and apologized for going.

Courtney closed the door behind them. Immediately, Alaska heard Sharon sighing.

“Finally he’s fucking gone” she muttered. “He has been talking all day about me learning about you and your career, he says that would change my life and shit…”

Alaska swallowed hard. She was about to explode. “I’m sorry, but… if you don’t mind… how old are you!?” she asked in a breathe.

Sharon opened her eyes wide, enjoying at Alaska’s despair. And of course, already smirking. Alaska started thinking Sharon liked seeing her in a bad mood. “Why does that drive you so crazy? Did you expect something different from me?”

“Well, yes!” Alaska replied. “What I was expecting was a baby! I thought you were no more than 7 years old”

Sharon’s laugh filled the office. It was a sweet sound and Alaska definitely wanted to hear more of it, but a pale pink color filled her cheeks when she realized she was making fun of her.

“And why would you think that?” Sharon stopped her laughter just to take some air, but the smile kept adorning her face.

“It’s not my fault. Have you seen the picture in your dad’s desk?”

“Oh, yeah, that one. What can I say? My dad likes old pics” Sharon shrugged.

“How old are even you?” Alaska sat on the couch. Sharon, without thinking of it more than a second, sat next to her.

“I’m 21” Sharon looked down to touch Alaska’s knee with her own. “But… I think we’ve talked about me so much already, why don’t you tell me about yourself?”

The corner of Alaska’s mouth raised on a little smile. This was the first time she had seen Sharon talking without her usual smug tone and smirk. And was she enjoying it? Of fucking course.

“There’s not much. My name is Alaska Thunder, I’m 27, I’m CEO of one of the biggest companies in Pennsylvania, last month I was in the cover of the most prestigious business magazine as the woman of the year…”

“Are you bragging?” Sharon smiled.

“I’m not!” Alaska laughed. “Well, maybe I am. Just a little bit”
