Steps to be sad:
1. Listen to “Dancing After Death” by Matt Maeson
2. Be able to visualize little music videos or animatics in your heads (props if you’re also an artist who thinks about how you’d make it)
3. Relate the song to They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera
4. Cry

Spoiler free review: They Both Die at the End, along with my hopes for this book.
two and a half out of five stars.
“Bold and haunting” (Lauren Oliver), “A phenomenal talent” (Juno Dawson), lots of praise for Adam Silvera’s newest release, They Both Die at the End. Thanks to these comments and the very positive things I’ve heard about Adam Silvera I was pretty stoked for this book. However, I felt immensely let down after finishing it.
When I read the premise of this book I thought it was a great concept: two teenage boys that are going to die in less than 24 hours meeting up and living their last day together. And there being this whole organisation that knows when everyone is going to die? Splendid! Unfortunately it was just that, a great concept. The execution could have been a lot better in my opinion, and props to Silvera for taking a shot at it because I think that a story like this is extremely difficult to pull off. But still, it could have been greater.
First of all, I didn’t really have a connection with either of the main characters and sometimes (especially at the end) I got extremely annoyed by them. I don’t know why but I just didn’t care for them at all and it’s not because I already knew they were going to end up dead (judging from the title of the book) since I’ve read about characters like this before and let me tell you, those completely wrecked me.
Second of all, the multiple POVs just weren’t doing it for me. They could have been very interesting but they were just, “meh”: a reoccurring sound I had in my head throughout this whole book. they were (almost) completely unnecessary to me and how was I supposed to care about these extra characters when I didn’t even care for the main ones?
And finally, (I am only keeping it with three points of critique but believe me, I made a whole list. I could keep ranting for some more paragraphs/pages.) the ending. I was unbelievably UNsatisfied with the way everything was wrapped up. Personally I quite frankly wanted to throw tbdate at a wall. I don’t know whether Adam Silvera just wanted to be done with it or if he simply ran out of inspiration but the only thing I could think was “That’s it?”. I was so frustrated, I had forced my way through this book, making myself pick it up time and time again and that was the end? I wasn’t just frustrated, I was actually pissed off. I am sorry for everyone who had to deal with me after finishing They Both Die at the End because I was in a terrible mood.
So, going back to the title of this review, this book was actually starting to grow on me. I was hoping it was going somewhere, I really was. Nevertheless, it quickly went downhill again and I was dissatisfied once more. So personally, I wouldn’t recommend They Both die at the End but that’s just my opinion and if you enjoyed it I am really happy for you. I wish I could say the same thing but sadly I just can’t.
