It’s not as thought he hadn’t expected it, but he had been dreading it. Still dreads it. Remus always was the most fiercely loyal of all of them, almost to the point of being territorial. If one could think James overly-protective (and he often is), then Remus was draconian. He’d spent all of last year rolling his eyes at the girls giggling at Sirius (and sometimes him). Scowling when Sirius suggested spending time with any of them. Even just in general, when James had once suggested inviting another Gryffindor student—a younger student newly added to the Quidditch team—to sit with them in the common room, Remus had looked up and asked Why? He’d said it guilelessly, head cocked to the side with genuine confusion, as though he couldn’t fathom why James wanted to bother with other people. As though they were a complete package, a singular unit, and any addition would be superfluous. Next to him, Lily had swatted him on the arm, saying, Don’t be mean, but Remus replied I’m not, so genuinely shocked that James had known he was telling the truth.

Anyway, that’s just the way Remus is. James likes it, most of the time. It makes him feel special, chosen, like Remus was so content with them and their friendship.

But it does make conversations like this difficult.
