The thing with threepio is he actively decided to refuse to be a person. He goes "oh my programing" but also all it takes for him to play God after claiming his programming Forbids it is Han going "For Real dude". He can metaprogram like the best of them, he's not actually that tightly bound by Restrictive Programming. If that's not enough for you, I also have a feeling he is not supposed to be running around yanking wampa signs. Which means this?

This is lying.

I mean, This is while he is running a DROID SPY NETWORK. This arc is about partially about Droids and their programming, and what threepio says here is similar to earlier conversations, where Poe asks for At The Very Least sir instead of master or mister dameron. It is also similar to he ways he keeps deflecting Poe calling his spy network it that, claiming droids don't need to spy, present themselves with false pretenses- because no one notices them, and their existence grants them entry- there is actually a panel where he looks directly at the camera and says, We're Just Droids.

He probably could be doing that stuff, dropping titles. The capacity to rewrite ones programming is the mark of True Droid Personality in the star wars universe, metaprogramming, a practice developed by droids running long time with no wipes, and as Poe points out, threepio is a decorated veteran at this point. He could write this out of his system, decide situationally who to call, for instance, just like he wrote spy communication in. He is the one deciding he doesn't get to be a person.

The reason he's so fuckinf repressed is a) Software. A protocol droid has all the cultural ideas of what a droid is and what a droid does and what a droid counts as by organic sentients in their data, their basic knowledge and worldview and toolbox, unlike an astromech, who just has so me rules about what they Should be doing or not, which they can overpass once they get good enough at independence. Protocol droids are literally social-norm driven beings, and are regarded in my OC Droid-Lib-Movement as Notoriously Hard To Liberate, though AP-5 may be a good example of a more uninhibited unit. I'll be back to this.

B) Memory wipe, he has no idea what he is or where he's from. Compare Prequels Threepio (silly guy, affectionate, a bit hungry to be loved and appreciated but mostly balanced) to Og trilogy Threepio (hysterical tsundere with a strong mean streak and very panicked deference to Humans)....

Not only is his first memory an anti-democracy uprising and political upheaval difficult for, everyone, he is specifically a diplomatic and regulation-y droid. That's not a fun time for HIM and his role. Actually, the empire is canonically even more oppressive to droids than general gffa society, so specifically his oppression got worse too, which can explain his stronger "keep our heads down, please don't sell me for scrap parts" attitude in this era. Y'know what, I'll be back to this too.

But yeah In my entirely personal, projective take- almost a version of internalized ableism or classism. Prequel threepio knows he was built in a Tattooine slave hut, and is at peace with that. Original trilogy Threepio does not. He is trying to preform and holding himself to the standards of a Proper droid, a factory fresh 3po unit, and thus has a running streak of inadequacy and deference beyond the affects of, y'know, basically being a thinking feeling slave during a shit political time.

Here ok I'm getting back to The Times: protocl driods are: D) Input based. All droid personality developments have to do with Inputs, shaped by the things they experience, but protocol droids and specifically Interpreters like threepio presents himself are in charge of cultural communication, linguistic pragmatics, diplomatic tone.... They may contain large amounts of information - 6 Million Forms Of Communication - in their databanks, but language and society are constantly shifting, and creating rigid droids would simply not be a good product. We see him learn and adapt to sociolinguistic situations like the Ewoks on the spot. Remember how I said Protocol droids are harder to liberate because they think of how society sees droid as knowledge in them? I think they would literally be statistically analyzing how people act to create Correct Reactions as like, their profile thing, and when you combine that with harsher more impersonal conditions (he has less close friends in OT than prequels, where Ani and The Lars-Skywalkers were good to him, Padme is his bestie and the naboo treat droids as people, canonically) and a sense of Likelihood Of Failure and something being "wrong" and 'insufficient' with him is like. Of course he has anxiety.

This is only partial but it's like 3 an have my "some stuff that's wrong with Threepio Psychologically" manifesto.

His internalized droidphobia and human-centered views also play with how he interacts with Artoo and Chewie, 'punching down' socially out of insecurity and stuff, but I feel I wrote about that p well somewhere, if you manage to dig one of my threepio-han posts up, so.
