A rare cactus listed in the California Native Plant Society - California Rare Plant Inventory as 2B.2 occurring in the Mojave Desert and eastern Sierra Nevada. Threatened by off-road vehicle use, and solar development.
One that I’ve been studying for two years and more closely this last year monitoring reproductive phenology. It flowering period begins in May-June but I have found a lowers occurring in July and August. I found that flowering like many plants is dependent upon the amount of perception. This last summer wit late monsoonal rains, encourage some flowering later in the season. (August). The ephemeral flowers open and senesce within one day and fruiting occurs over a longer period of time as what we have thought in the past.
I have shared more about this plant and fieldwork on my Instagram account @everyleafspeaks

#LepechiniaGanderi on top of a mountain near the #usmexicoborder, above the #marinelayer/#MayGray fog rolling in at sunset. AKA Gander’s or San Diego Pitcher Sage, this plant only grows in a handful of areas in San Diego County and Northern Baja California. One of my favorite finds during #CityNatureChallenge2022. #californianativeplants #iNaturalist #sandiegonativeplants #californiarareplants #rareplants #pitchersage #lepechinia #lamiaceae (at San Diego County, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CdJ79ytrlnH/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
