I've been a fan of author-illustrator Genevieve Côté for quite a while. Her beautiful watercolour artwork is always so endearing, and her stories heartwarming without being cheesy. So heading into the end of this week of friendship-focused stories, I was happy to come across her book "Me and You" (2009). This first in a series of picture books about Piggy and Bunny is a simple rumination on envy and self-acceptance, perfect for toddlers. With minimal text and playful repetition, the animals admire each other's differences and learn to appreciate their own uniqueness. Alphabet books are tricky. They're so important to early literacy, and they CAN be wonderful when done right ... but they can also be boring, uninspired and kind of cheesy. Luckily, Wallace Edwards's "Alphabeasts" (2002) is none of those things! Even my admittedly poor photography (this one came off my own shelf) can't hide how gorgeous this book is. And while the text is deceptively simple and concise (making it a potentially quick read for younger kids), the setups of animals in wildly improbable household situations, painted in exquisite detail like Renaissance portraits, make it uniquely intriguing for older kids as well, and a great conversation starter. "Jillian, Jillian, Jillian Jiggs, it looks like your room has been lived in by pigs!" 📚📗📙 At this point I'm pretty convinced that it's not possible to grow up in Canada and not be familiar with the Jillian Jiggs books by Phoebe Gilman. But why should we Canadians have all the fun? 📙📗📚 Starting with the eponymous "Jillian Jiggs" (1985), and including several more books (most popularly 1988's "The Wonderful Pigs of Jillian Jiggs", as well as a treasury collection published in 2008), these stories of a busy little girl who is so immersed in her imaginative endeavours that she leaves a bit of a tornado in her wake are clever, funny, and wonderfully relatable read-alouds!
