Today is #MemorialDay—an annual day of remembrance to honor all those who have died in service to the United States during peace and war. On April 6, 1917, the U.S. joined its allies to fight in World War I. Southern Railway employee Fritts D. Corrigan enlisted in the Army three days later. The Corrigans were a railroad family. Private Corrigan’s father, Patrick, worked for Southern Railway. He and his wife, Susan, raised eleven children in Erlanger, Kentucky. Fritts worked for the railroad, first as a section laborer and then at Southern’s Ludlow Yard in the steam shovel gravel pit. Fritts served as a member of the 28th Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was killed in action on May 28, 1918 during the first American offensive of the war—the Battle of Catigny—and buried in the Somme American Cemetery in France. Today’s article appeared in the March 1919 issue of the Southern News Bulletin. #honor #respect #history (at Erlanger, Kentucky) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bx9ic4Snn1q/?igshid=1ufep8ykpho5m
