#Repost @chicagoblackcat Panther moves! My mom is going to talk about us cats and the importance of our claws! Feel free to join the convo! 🐾 Full disclosure, I used to think declawing a cat was ok. I say this because there is a lot of anger and judgement surrounding the rights of cat’s claws, and it makes people defensive. We had my cat growing up declawed. 😿 🤦🏼‍♀️ Sure, I was 12 when we got him but I thought nothing of it. Neuter and declaw seemed standard. A package deal! Ugh. I wish I could have a conversation with my 12 year old self. 🐾 Thankfully most of us have learned that declawing a cat is NOT ok. It’s not even a little bit ok. But I don’t like shaming people into agreeing with me. We can’t do better if we don’t understand. Because many people now see that declawing is a very painful and unnecessary amputation, people’s minds, like mine, can be changed. Change is good! As Martha Stewart has said, “When you’re through changing, you’re through.” 🐾 The truth is, many cats who have been declawed seem fine. Cats are great at hiding pain and discomfort. They may seem fine but declawing a cat robs them of so much. The way a cat’s claws retract, stretch and scratch a post is an obvious indication of how good it feels! There are some terrible complications that can happen with a declaw, but most of the time, we’re just stealing a part of them for our own benefit. Why? Because we love our couch more? Because we don’t want to get scratched? It isn’t our right to take away their claws. They’re not “fine” without them. 🐾 So, whether you had a cat declawed 20 years ago or a week ago, forgive yourself, never do it again and protect those beautiful claws going forward. 🐾 If you want more info, check out the film @pawproject made.
