so rowena is technically my second oldest oc (the honor of first belongs to silla 💕) but i’m listing her instead of silla because her story and personality has been consistent for the past ten years whereas silla has evolved!! rowena is proud, stubborn, and clever as the devil—and each of these traits have been both flaw and merit. her relationship with alistair is complex and tragic but mended with a bit of time.

honestly ursula and jael were both strong competitors for most cruel oc, but kina takes the cake because, unlike the other two who cultivated strong affinities/bonds in their youth, kinasi has never known kindness. for over thirty years she lived in an environment of fear, hatred, and isolation. all she knew was the vie for power and all she knew was punishment if she failed the social climb. in a world of every-man-for-himself and please-your-master-or-fall-from-grace, community-centric skills such as teamwork, generosity, and emotional support were nonexistent, and so she never developed them. to be “mean,” which is putting it lightly, was just their nature. dog eat dog. need against need.

the sweetest weirdo who ever lived!! ellery is a druid who, after being separated from her parents, raised herself in the forest with no one but the creatures and sun-dappled greenery for company. everything she learned, she learned from the woods—tenderness a kind of virtue no human could have taught her. she’s decisive and gentle and accepting and doesn’t care for social conventions in the slightest AND!!! i love her so much 🌿🦌🤍

her true name eaki, bright was given to a halfling village deep in the bramblewood when she was just an infant. an odd combination, tiefling and halflings, but they understood social scorn and ostracization and accepted her completely. when her adoptive sibling fell mysteriously ill, bright, at the behest of the village herbalist, sought out an ancient forest entity, and struck a deal—the life of her sibling (and many boons) in exchange for a favor when the time comes. all this being said, she is not the wisest warlock around. bright is bright for her charm and silliness, not her brains.

15. trembling hands + jael khatri.

setting: takes place prior to the events of wotr, before jael was expelled from the academy. warnings: nothing graphic but blood, torture, mention of animal death.

“D’you think he’s had enough?”

Selkie sat on a stool in corner of the chamber, her magenta hair her only discernible feature in the darkness.

Jael regarded the man on the floor before them—nude save for a simple cloth, but unchained to the floor, just as Jael liked it. The mark on the floor she stood on was an indicator of how far he could reach while shackled—surely safe for Jael, but leaving no room for creativity. She needed room. Momentum.

The man had not moved—not willingly, that is—long enough for any sane person to worry. Were it not for her ability to sense that delightful thrum in his heart, he would appear dead. No doubt this was Selkie’s thought.

“No,” Jael said. “He has a few more tests in…”

The man’s trembling hands reached out to Jael, and she tilted her head quizzically. Was this some sort of plea?

She crossed the mark defining her place from his and knelt down in front of him, bloodying the fabric of her thus far porcelain white apron. She grasped his hand firmly and smiled down at him with a clinical fascination. The man’s eyes flashed with hope—of course they did. She was gentle, wistful, oh so benevolent.

She wondered what he thought in that moment. Did he believe this was solidarity? A signifier of some reprieve? Was this, to him, a promise he was getting out of here safely?

That was always the ideal, of course. The fabled fruit to be born from this endeavor. It’s easy to kill. It did not take Jael long to learn this truth as a child, toying with the rats in her family’s pantry—the large gray ones that squirmed so beautifully, so silently. They did not beg or plead or hold onto hope. They understood this is the way nature goes, that they were one minuscule contribution in Jael’s search for power, that watching their bodies writhe and contort was not for pleasure but necessity. Yes, it was easy to kill them.

The work came in keeping them alive. The was more to power than simply learning the most efficient way to kill someone. But blood was a tricky thing, the essence of life, the groundwork of any sacrifice, and she played with it in ways that would put the Dark Prince himself to shame. Thus far no one had survived a night with Jael Khatri.

So yes, Jael wanted exactly what her experiments did. She wanted them to live.

The man took her touch as grounds to mumble out a new plea. His voice, gravelly and heavy, begged in the same way they all did. I’ll give you anything. You can take my money. Just let me leave. Please.

Please. What a revolting word.

Jael’s face twisted into a sneer as she thrust the man’s hand away from her and returned to her designated mark on the floor, squaring her shoulders and raising her hand. In a sharp movement, she willed the rush of his blood to halt. She raised him up from the ground slowly, suspending him in air, watching as the bulbous veins pulled against his skin from the inside, and pushed it just a little farther. Just when she sensed something in him might burst, she released him and he crumpled to the floor in a bloody heap. Jael had turned away from him before he hit the ground.

“A fine display today, Jael,” Selkie said gleefully, handing Jael back her night robe. Jael only hummed in response.

Selkie twisted towards the man with an impish grin and a gag in hand. As she marched over, the man sputtered out more apologies, more appeals, but Jael was too busy cleaning her hands in the basin to hear his voice, or when it was muffled out. She strutted out of the chamber.

Sometimes she almost preferred the rats.

GOD part of me wants to say they repeatedly break up and then get back together for the rest of time just for the drama of it all LMAO and you know what?? i’m certain they do split a couple times. but they eventually realize that whatever fucked up connection they have is so valuable they can’t help but salvage it.

35. do they bring out the best in each other, or the worst? do they have a fatal flaw?

both oh my god. they both value freedom a lot but jael’s overarching vision interrupts daeran’s desire for pandemonium. like jael is chaotic as well but calculatingly clinical. she can push that chaos aside for whatever ulterior motives she has, so while he wants total havoc, she wants just enough for it to be fun. this is (i think) what brought them together and made them so sexy as a couple, but also where they’ll ultimately clash the most.

5. nicknames? pet names? any in-jokes?

yes indeed 😈 since nick is also the name of my boyfriend i did project the tiniest bit onto saskia. most often she calls him nicholas, nick only when she’s being serious, and nicky nick when she’s in a silly goofy mood 🤪 she absolutely refuses to call him justice unless she’s being sarcastic, much to his dismay, and doesn’t have many pet names tbh?? the way she says nickkk in that tone of hers shows endearment enough.

nick, on the other hand, is so annoying. he’s thought of every possible play on her name (kiki, suskia, 2022 kia sorento plug-in hybrid™️, etc!!) and has a preference for babe/baby/sunshine/love of my life—especially when he wants something. he also has a fondness for referring to her as “my girlfriend” needlessly as some sort of flex lmaooo

12. is there a wedding? what was the proposal like? any kind of honeymoon?

there absolutely is >:3 saskia agreed for tax purposes, nick agreed so he could upgrade from “my girlfriend” to “my wife.” it was a very impromptu proposal—nick literally just throwing the idea out there over breakfast one morning. planning it was a nightmare not because they had different tastes but because nick wanted everything to be perfect. it was even in the papers (JUSTICE: BRIDEZILLA?) and it was difficult keeping the media at bay for saskia’s sake.

as for the wedding itself, the colors were matcha green and cream, and audra and gray were the only other two in the wedding party :-) the venue was dark and softly lit and small—only about a hundred people!!—and the photos were beautiful. saskia had personally coordinated decorations and nick made the cake himself. they told the press they were honeymooning in cancun but they secretly went to sorrento. nick thought this was hilarious.

15. how adventurous are they?

extremely. well, maybe it’s better to say nick is adventurous and saskia trails along amusedly for emotional support. she’s not averse to any of his overeager plans and maybe she hides how much she enjoys them a little bit, but she can’t let him know that. she has a reputation, after all!!

29. how do the handle disasters or emergencies? minor injuries? sickness?

in an emergency, nick is always reliable (oldest sibling things!!) and tends to know what to do better than saskia, and even she can admit it. he’s justice. he keeps his cool whereas saskia just pretends to.

when it comes to minor things and sickness, as a caretaker nick is suffocating nfjdsjbfnd. more than enough medicine and homemade soup and canada dry than saskia could ever need—and constantly checking in.

as the one sick?? he’s a baby. does absolutely nothing all day long. and whines. he tries to appeal to saskia’s soft side and get her to do things and saskia likes to think she doesn’t fall for it but she does every time. she’ll comply with his every whim and keep a straight face while she does so and he’ll just grin up at her and say, “thank you, baby,” and all she can do is roll her eyes.

only the mean ones JFNDBSJDJ daeran would often poke at her uhhhhhh sadistic nature even before catching feelings for her. “ah, my bloodthirsty friend!!” or “give this to the commander. the sick cruel and beautiful one.” AND in turn jael would sarcastically refer to him as “your highness” 😌 true love

12. is there a wedding? what was the proposal like? any kind of honeymoon?

there is not simply because i don’t see them as the marrying type!! but they might as well be married. they’re loyal and never far from each other <3

well daeran will try anything once 🥴 but horny jokes aside, i wouldn’t necessarily call them adventurous as opposed to opportunistic!! jael is fearless and will go anywhere she deems necessary and daeran will follow her with only mild complaining and occasional convincing

they don’t 🤩 that is to say, daeran hates caring about her (at first). the first time they found themselves in a dire situation and he felt fear his healing wouldn’t be enough, he wanted to avoid her for days. but he couldn’t. he still came to speak to her, offered her roses, splendid gifts, and when she’d teasingly suggest he’s courting her he’d coyly smile and deny any knowledge of such things.

and jael?? daeran has to beg her for attention when he’s hurt or sick HFKDHSHKF not that that’s anything out of the usual for him but jael truly could not care less fhdjskfhdbd????
