SYNOPSIS:

Thirty-five year-old Ezra Cohen and his friend Mo broadcast a podcast that touches upon African-American issues. On Yom Kippur, he dutifully goes with his parents and sister to their synagogue, where he is barraged with inappropriate questions and comments from the congregation and his family. He is set up by his parents to go on a date with a young woman from the same synagogue.

REVIEW:

Totally underrated film. Yes, it got lazy toward the end in trying to tie up loose ends, but overall a 7/10 & certainly worth a watch. Eddie Murphy and Julia Dreyfuss are overbearing parents, who want the best for their kids, in a different way, as they try to navigate the inherent differences of an “interracial” relationship.

It starts off a bit slow, but there’s something for everyone in this comedy about relationships, social mores and most of all, familial interference. It’s hard not to laugh at the more sophisticated jokes (Ducovny trying to sing John Legend at the piano) or the sight gags (first Dreyfuss awkwardly trying to compliment a Black woman’s breasts and later accidentally yanking off a long wig at the bridesmaids party). Murphy is also very good, at playing the stern, but loving father of the bride, as he browbeats Hill’s character as Hill pursues his daughter in marriage.
