What kind of relationship would First have with Human/Cryptid Nomicon?
Kinda like An Exasparated Dad Creator✨ and His Weird Child Creation. ✨
Tumblr media
Cryptid!Nomicon did not instantly pop out as a humanoid/cryptid as soon as Ninjanomicon was created. There was a sort of loooong learning period, where First Ninja, after creating Ninjanomicon went sort of 'dormant' in the book because it took a lot of his energy (basically most of his life force), and Ninjanomicon was pretty much alone with several next Ninjas. It barely had any personality, and what it had was more of a basic copy of First Ninja. (Like a little kid that first copies its parents before developing more as its own person.) But with every next ninja, Nomicon itself started to grow beyond what First Ninja ever anticipated.
Like, at first it was fairly 'normal' in its behaviour, but as centuries passed and Ninjanomicon developed (so to say) more and started to build its own personality based on all the Ninjas and their memories it continued to absorb, well.... let's just say the number of teenagers and years of dealing with them really influenced how Cryptid!Ninjanomicon's humour developed, lol.
Tumblr media
First might not have anticipated how Cryptid!Ninjanomicon came to be, but he trusts it to be a teacher/guide to future Ninjas and to fullfill its purpose. (And despite his denials, there is kernel of fatherly feeling towards something he created, enough at least to sometimes view its antics with exasparated fondness.)
And Cryptid!Nomicon is very fond of its creator. After all it basically wouldn't have existed without him and it serves as his resting place/haven/retirement home lol. To some degree it is even overprotective of him! Cryptid!Nomicon does not let every Ninja that came after know about/meet the First Ninja, most Ninjas are even unaware that First Ninja's soul/essense resides in Ninjanomicon!
So in general they have a pretty good relationship, me likes to think. ;)

So my friend finally convinced me to binge Miraculous with her and I think it’s pretty cute and great! But…a part of me was reminded that I’d never get to see another new episode of Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja ever again. Tho the plots do differ significantly, the pattern each episode takes is quite similar and nostalgic…
So I thought, why not draw Randy has a Miraculous Holder? I got some info below but tbh if you like Miraculous and are bored while waiting for season 2, give RC9GN a try it’s very funny and the animation is very beautiful and varied throughout each episode! And if you liked RC9GN, give Miraculous a try, it’s really cute and pretty well rounded, I love it!
Enter Tengu! The Crow Miraculous Holder!
I actually really love how this all came together so smoothly. Randy gets his powers from a magical ninja mask made of a Tengu’s feathers, which is an ancient Japanese Crow Demon. I just turned the magic mask into a magic headband, changed his outfit a little bit and boom! My favorite part of all this is the fact giving Randy a beaked mask not only makes it more obvious his suit and kwami are suppose to be birds (crows are a lot more simple in appearance than peacocks lol) but legit Tengu Masks are typically made to have long noses.
Norri is both based off of the NinjaNomicon and it’s creator, First Ninja whose familial name is known to be Norisu. I already love Norri and will probably doodle him again soon in the future hehe. Norri is very old and very wise but that doesn’t stop him from getting more than a little annoyed sometimes. I figure Norri himself would have been in a similar situation as Nooroo a long time ago, so he is very adamant in his opinion that Holders are to be chosen carefully and with some discrimination. And then he gets stuck with Randy…Creep, wth man?
14-year-old Randy is very much the opposite of wise, but he’s still a good kid. AU wise, he’s been a huge fan of Tengu and the legends that surround his town because of him ever since he and his best friend Howard were rescued by him as children. He’s both a bit of a cryptid and local celebrity at once, but Randy and Howard wanna find Tengu and personally meet him one day. But for all of Tengu’s heroism and vigilance, it’s his popularity and coolness as a hero Randy wants to replicate the most. So as a Holder, Randy enthusiastically jumps at the chance to be a super cool butt-kicking hero, but the link between responsibility and power seems to elude him as much as his disregard of Norri the first few weeks. But together through sheer determination, experience, and understanding, Norri will make a hero worthy of living up to the name Tengu out of Randy yet!
After some research I found out that actual Tengu are said to be fallen Yamabushi (mountain priests) or Samurai whose greatest flaw in their last life was arrogance. This is why they are depicted as having long noses or “beaks”, it’s a sign of vanity. There are also bad and good Tengu and humanoid and bird Tengu. Good Tengu set out to punish all who display too much arrogance as well as protect sacred mountains where Yamabushi reside in. Often they are very skilled in combat too. I would think Norri has that kind of mindset already. The Nomicon itself has smacked Randy around and even punished him rather severely once or twice on days he just needed to listen! And it’s just a book!! The beauty of Randy’s rise to heroism and wisdom, though, is his genuine desire to do good. He might come off as a people-pleaser some days and foolishly optimistic or popularity seeking on others, but the days he takes action to own up to his mistakes are the days Norri knows he in fact was given a good one this time around.
(…imma probably draw more of this later ᕕ(ᐛ)ᕗ)

Do you think that your “human” Nomicon would be the type to stare at everyone? To the Nomicon, it might treat its staring as observing and assessing situations and people to see whether or not they’re a threat to be looked after. To everyone else… it’s just creepy.
I guess? The thing is, when its in a "human disguise" aka "wearing someone else's face", it already looks completely unnatural and creepy, so staring is like the least of people's concern, considering that Nomicon sometimes forgets people breath and blink automatically, and fidget/move/do a 100 micro motions a second, so it kinda just...doesn't do it, unless reminded. So yea it kinda does stare and completely ignores any human cues about prolonged eye contact and etc.
Tumblr media
And when it is in its base form, its face is a black void with only pinpricks of green ligth for eyes so its kind of hard to tell if it is staring at you or into space, or if it has any expression at all?
Tumblr media
so it uses doodles for additional emotion expression xD
Tumblr media
Pfff, listen, despite how much I adore the thought of a 800 year old artefact having a beef with one rude teen, I do believe that Nomicon doesn't actually hate Howard. It is annoyed, exasperated, generally tired of his obnoxious, rude and disregarding behaviour, but it does not hate him. If anything Nomicon is somewhat amused by the amount of disdain Howard has towards it. And because of that it likes to mess with Howard.
Tumblr media
Randy of course doesn't believe Howard that Nomicon sometimes purposefully messes with him, because why would a 800 year old book spirit will go out of its way to do it? ;)

I’ve been simping over your ‘human’ Nomicon design since it came out in Ninja-November. If you have any headcanons about them, would you please share?
ah, a fellow monster/eldritch horror enjoyer I see! thank you! <3 tbh that Nomicon design was like an one day revelation, because while I love all the human!Nomi designs I've seen over the years (and there are some banger ones, man), it hit me that we as a fandom really underutilize all the uncanny aspects Nomi possesses. So ye. I do have a couple hc.
Tumblr media
Nomicon is an entity that doesn't have its own face and voice.
Whenever Nomicon talks to Randy it uses proxies in form of art/images/drawings/scribbles/writings. It gives strangely non-verbal vibes for something so cryptically eloquent! And whenever it does use a voice, its voice of the First Ninja (or more accurately his VA xD) , its first owner/wielder. When it uses a face, its usually the static/unmoving marble-like faces of Art or silly pen scribbles - both of which hold that uncanny valley look of something that looks human but really isn't. Not to mention the fact that it once literally stole Randy's face/body to teach him a lesson.
Tumblr media
I like to think that Nomicon has a library of faces/visages/voices it can take on, but all of them are creepily unsettling because - what would a book know about how to be human? It's face moves wrong, the eyes are too wide open, its body is creepily still, the voice uses inflections like its copying someone else (and sometimes voice warbles and changes/overlaps with other voices because it has so many).
All of it gives these fae/cryptid vibes of creatures that steal voices/faces to trick people, but in this case Nomicon collects those faces/voices from its owners along with their memories (which is another messed up thing we collectively forget is very creepy lol).
Nomicon is an entity that doesn't have a body, and most importantly - hands.
The reason I gave Nomicon so many shadow hands is because, well, Nomicon is a book. Hands hold those books, so the hands are very important to Nomi. All those shadow hands? Are memories of all the hands that held it (mostly previous Ninjas, but also the Creep and some others). It remembers everyone who held it.
The fit- the hat and the cape are kind of obvious, it look like center of the cover and the cape looks like covers on either side with pages underneath. The weirdest addition I made - is the spaghetti noodle-doodle 'hair'.
It constantly fascinates me that Nomicon, besides the Greek Key/9 motif, has those sort of concentration circles that are also present during Mask/Suit transformation. It gave me thought of sort of weird halos i guess?? Which adds to creepy vibe, but in this case its biblically accurate angel / holy deity type of vibes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nomicon has very basic understanding of humanity.
For all the experiences/memories/personalities it was created from and it absorbed over the years, human things are a rather alien concept for the book. It's the reason Nomicon is so bad at its timing whenever it buzzes Randy. It just doesnt care that you are at school Randy, its trying to teach you how to be a better ninja!!! In some sense, it absorbed the most prevalent quality of First Ninja - the dedication to duty, the whole reason for its existence - to serve Ninjas to be the best they can. So, such human/mortal things as good grades/video games/a good nights sleep are very nebulous concepts to it.
Less of a hc but more of an observation/gripe but-
COME ON ITS NAME??? Ninjanomicon as in Ninjanecronomicon??? Because lets be honest its not just a book/guide for Ninjas its a book full of DEAD NINJAS??? LIKE??? In some sense all previous Ninjas, when they go through Ultimate Lesson, 'die' in the real world (because they are no longer Ninjas) and are preserved in Nomicon. And First is like deadass dead? (Plop plop too lol). So I feel like there should be more creepiness about that.
Anyway thats basically most of it, and sorry for silly doodles but i cant really draw creepy stuff xD

As someone who has always loved siblings dynamics in fiction, I find it funny that almost every single member of the HoM team has siblings. Kim has two little brothers, Danny has an older sister, Jake has a little sister, Jenny has eight robot sisters, June has an older and a younger brother, Rex has an older brother, and Zak has three cryptid siblings. Ben and Randy are the only ones who are technically only children but Ben still at least has a cousin who he has a sibling dynamic with. I don't think Randy had anyone like that. (Although it's one of the few shows here that I didn't watch so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.) Any way, now Only Child Cunningham is being treated like the little brother by all of these experienced siblings and has no clue what to do and I find that funny.
(P.s. sorry about the long comment. This thought wouldn't leave me alone so I thought i should share it)
(P.p.s I love your HoM au and your art. Thank you for sharing it!)
Please, don't be sorry, this is like, one of my favorite asks about HoMies I ever got! And also thank you for your kind words! <3<3<3
I also adore sibling dynamics in fiction! It's one of the main reasons I don't want to put much focus on ships in this AU, like I mentioned before, there would be like one canon couple with one of HoMies, but otherwise everyone are sort of floating in nebulous single area, so I could focus better on their complicated friendships with a dash of found family/siblings dynamics!
(And your ask reminded me of a fanart I did a long time ago about Randy being the only child in Secret Trio. xD same brain anon!)
Also one can argue that Howard, Randy's best friend, could be considered sort of like a brother to him (they became friends at a very young age), but I personally view them more as Bros. (does it make sense, lol?)
But even if we count Howard, their dynamic would be more equal in older-younger sibling scale, while Randy indeed would be mostly treated as a younger sibling amongst HoMies and it would probably drive him insane!
Being the youngest and newest in their friend circle, he is like a new baby brother or a co-worker/young kohai (ye, cringe wording but terminology vibe aint wrong! xD) that others are prepared to protect and help, impart their wisdom on, but also tease! (and perhaps learn something from him in return! )
But Randy Only Child Cunningham, as an already seasoned, if a bit overconfident, hero would hate (just a little bit) being considered as less experienced (even if he technically is) than others, no matter how much he absolutely adores being in presence of all those cool people! At times it would feel condescending, but in reality others just want to support him the more they learn about how he came to be the Ninja.
After all they know what it felt like being that young, having that responsibility trust upon your shoulders and going through so much. Especially considering that among them, Randy perhaps had the least stable support during his hero-ing career. Sure, all of them had to go through some things alone, but there were family and friends that were there to help when it came to it. And, no offense to Howard, who does sometimes manages to get through for Randy, he is not the best at being the type of support Randy needs at times. And, Ninjanomicon? While incredibly useful for teaching moral lessons and art of being Ninja - is not exactly the most er, physically able in supporting Randy at time of crisis, being an inanimate object and all that, lol.
So yes, Randy-Only Child-Lone Ninja Hero-Cunningham sometimes doesn't know what to do with all those people who appeared in his life and treat him like a little bro! But sometimes, he enjoys it. ;)
(a little bit of random rambling beneath, feel free to ignore! haha)
Also random, and its not very obvious at all, but there is slightest differences amongst HoMies on how they view/regard him and behave with/around him, depending on their own experiences:
Kim and Jake, as older siblings through and through, tend to see him as a younger bro, like their own siblings who can be a handful and overzealous little hellions at times.
Danny, Rex, Jenny and Zak are a bit complicated. They all have siblings that are older than them, but they are also kind of younger in some sense (or in Danny's case an adopted younger sibling).
Danny and Rex would tend to be overprotective a little bit, as people who didnt have a younger sibling before (I mean, Danny does but she is so independant! Danny doesnt get to exercise his overprotectiveness on Danielle xD) so its a bit new to them. But they are also kind of dicks, and thats just the younger siblings in them talking, lol.
Jenny and Zak on the other hand, both have siblings that are very confusing from the age bracket view.
All ofJenny's siblings are older than her BUT their prototype AI and bodies make them behave younger than her, so she tends to view them as younger siblings. There is a constant argument amongst them about who is older-younger, but its all in good fun! (She also sometimes misses being the only child. xD)
Zak's siblings are all cryptids, and two of them are older than him in age (Fisk and Zon are definitily full grown and possibly more long-lived than humans, I still have questions about Komodo, but he is probably older than Zak in age just by a little bit), but their behaviour, as.... well, i don't want to say animals, because they are not mindless animals, but let's just say - their disregard to human behaviours and norms, as cryptids, make them behave in a way that could be considered irresponsible, thus making Zak often behave like a responsible older sibling, despite being younger than them.
So, Jenny and Zak tend to be as snooty and in 'charge' as an older sibling would, but also be mischevous little shits that is younger (sorta only) child behaviour.
Ben and Jun are sort of like the previous four, but they tend to view Randy on a more equal footing rather than just vacilate between older-younger types of behaviour.
Ben, is a single child, but he grew up pretty close to Gwen, since they were born on the same day. Sort of growing up twins but not kinda situation. They also have an older cousin/brother Ken, and they both adore him, but it is obvious that primarly those two grew up together and are equally annoyed with that, lol.
Jun is a middle child. (I kind of dont want to say anything else, because i feel like it explains everything. xD but-) She is independant, and is equally exasparated with her snooty older brother and her hellion of a younger brother. So, really, she just tends to be the most normal towards Randy in the end???
so, ye, of course in the end they treat him as just a new friend, this was just more of me trying to look into inner mind of sibling dynamics in a weird way haha
sorry about it, but if you got this far, hope you had an entertaining read! ;D
