What was our friend @culturaloffering talking about?
Oh, yes. Notebooks. I’m partial to the one at the bottom of this photo; it is an integral part of my work day. I work from a standing desk and this PanoBook fits perfectly on a shelf.

You Paid For It. Don't You Own It?
You Paid For It. Don’t You Own It?
Kurt Harden, long time host of the CulturalOffering blog, shares his thoughts on some news from Amazon, “and customers will no longer be able to download already-purchased books a year later.”  It is a cogent, interesting description of what we can expect in the near future.  Thanks for the perspective, Kurt. While I purchased maybe a dozen digital books, I never enjoyed reading them.  As much as…

A new set of technologies that promised liberation from censors and gatekeepers is instead producing a tragedy of the mind, by putting a small number of oligarchs, bureaucrats, and ideologues in charge of what and how we read. —David Samuels

We all need a workbench.
Tumblr media
Mine is my standing desk, cleared of my MacBook and papers. I find that tinkering is satisfying; so far I’ve swapped the single coil neck pickup for a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates Humbucker on this ersatz Tele and replaced the pickguard.
Next up I’m upgrading the single coil P/ups on a made in Indonesia Jazzmaster.
In the corner of my office are a few vintage electric clocks that I’ll take apart, clean, and educate myself about.
None of these projects are particularly daunting and price of failure is low- the clocks and guitars are cheap.
But it’s fun. As is gardening, a passion I practice in other people’s yards now that I live in a condo.
My point being, some time away from our phones is healthy. Honing new skills that are removed from our jobs and that require tools like screwdrivers and pruners- ok not for the same tasks- is extremely satisfying.
You need a workbench. @culturaloffering

When Credit Is Due
When Credit Is Due
Bill Mahrer is not someone I watch or follow (I don’t watch anyone), but he nails it in a monologue that was shared by Kurt Harden, one of my blogging mentors and gatekeeper of the 25 Blogs Guaranteed To Make You Smarter. Click here to watch it. Kurt gives credit when credit is due. Caution…strong language
