American presidents lie. They always have. Just Google “Lyndon Johnson and the Gulf of Tonkin,” “Bill Clinton and NAFTA” or “George Bush and weapons of mass destruction.” Even Honest Abe likely told a fib or two.

But no U.S. president has ever lied as prolifically, constantly, insidiously and dangerously as Donald Trump. He never stops. He’s the Energizer Bunny of endless falsehood.

It’s enough to make even Orwell’s head explode.

Trump, who received votes from just one in four U.S. adults in 2016, claimed that he would have won the popular vote over Hillary Clinton were it not for the voter fraud of undocumented immigrants. The alleged criminal votes were never cast.

Trump called his 2016 Electoral College victory “The biggest electoral victory since Ronald Reagan.” It was no such thing.

Trump lied about the size of his inauguration crowd even as aerial photographs of the event contradicted his boasts.

He has repeatedly and preposterously claimed that the Latinx immigrant population is full of murderers, rapists and gang members. It is not.

Trump claimed that President Obama “had my ‘wires tapped’ in Trump Tower” just before his 2016 election victory. They were not.

He claimed to have as president-elect negotiated a deal to “save 1,100 jobs” at a Carrier plant in Anderson, Ind. He did no such thing.

He absurdly concocted a terrorist attack that never occurred, in Sweden, during his first month in office.

He claimed that the head of the Boy Scouts called him to say his speech was the best ever delivered to the Boy Scouts Jamboree. No such call ever took place. Trump’s terrible oration was widely reviled.

Trump claimed to have fired James Comey because the FBI director mishandled Hillary Clinton’s email scandal prior to the 2016 election, not because he was continuing to investigate Trump and the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia. That was another baldfaced lie.

He claimed that white-nationalist and neo-Nazi marchers in Charlottesville, Va., were “protesting very quietly,” and that liberal and left counter-protesters “didn’t have a [protest] permit.” False and false.

Trump laughably told oil workers in North Dakota that environmentalists “didn’t know why” they opposed the ecocidal, petro-capitalist Dakota Access and Keystone-XL pipelines. Ridiculous.

Trump lied repeatedly and viciously about the number of people who diedduring and after Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.

He ludicrously claimed to have led a strong federal response to the devastating storm in Puerto Rico. (He gave himself a “ten.”)

Trump absurdly claimed that his former national security adviser Michael Flynn didn’t do “anything wrong.” Flynn was later convicted for lying about his communications with the Kremlin during Trump’s presidential transition.

Trump farcically claimed that Paul Manafort never played a major role in his 2016 campaign. (Manafort chaired the Trump campaign up through the Republican National Convention that year.)

Trump falsely claimed that a Justice Department inspector general report exonerated him of collusion with Russia and obstruction of justice. The report did neither of those things.

Trump ridiculously claimed that Michael Cohen was never a big player in his career or campaign. Cohen was Trump’s longstanding personal attorney and “fixer,” and he too has been convicted on federal charges.

Trump has claimed to know nothing about the illegal campaign finance payoff of Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal. Cohen exposed that lie this summer.

After Cohen turned himself in to federal authorities, Trump said that Cohen pleaded guilty to two counts of campaign finance violations that “were not crimes.” False. The violations are indeed federal crimes.

Trump unbelievably claimed not to have known that his son and son-in-law met with Russians claiming to have dirt on Hillary Clinton in Trump Tower in June 2016.

Trump helped concoct the White House lie that the real subject matter of that June 2016 meeting was U.S. adoption policy.

He says that China “has been attempting to interfere in the upcoming 2018 elections.” There is no evidence to support that charge.

He falsely claims to be a self-made billionaire, something that The New York Times shows to have been a lie. (His father staked his entire business.)

Trump says that he and the Republican Party passed a “middle-class” tax “reform.” He certainly knows that they enacted a plutocratic tax cut, a great windfall for big corporations and the richest 1 percent.

Trump absurdly claimed before the tax cut that “we [U.S.-Americans] pay more taxes than anybody in the world” (we don’t) and that the tax “reform” would ��cost me a fortune.”

He absurdly said that “public lands will once again be available for public use” while handing over 2 million acres to private corporations for coal mining, oil drilling, uranium extraction and other environmentally disastrous industrial activities.

He falsely claimed that he was legally compelled to order a “zero tolerance” border policy last spring that separated Mexican and Central American children from their parents.

In defense of his good friends atop the absolutist, head-chopping Saudi Arabian regime (which sends kill teams to torture, kill, and vivisect dissenting journalists in foreign embassies), Trump claims that Saudis have purchased $110 billion worth of military equipment from the U.S. and that this purchase creates “five-hundred thousand jobs,” later inflated to ““1 million jobs.” ”in the U.S. His numbers here are absurdly exaggerated.

He claims without evidence that there are “people of Middle Eastern descent” in the latest Central American migrant “caravan” moving through Mexico towards the U.S.’ southern border.

He baselessly insisted that “Democrats are paying members of the caravan to try and get into the U.S. to harm Republicans in the midterms.”

He has sent U.S. troops to guard the border on the absurd lie that the beleaguered caravan constitutes a “national emergency.”

He preposterously claims that it is the mainstream media, which he calls “the enemy of the people,” and not him that has created our current climate of hatred and violence—even as he applauds a Montana congressman for body-slamming a young reporter.

Trump’s evasion of responsibility follows a hate-filled campaign and 21 months of ax-grinding in the Oval Office that has seen him call immigrants criminal gang members, murderers and rapists, while maliciously describing his political enemies and media critics and journalists as “evil,” “low lifes,” “low IQ” and “the most dishonest people on Earth.” Along the way, the openly sexist Trump has referred to women as “animals,” “dogs,” “horse-face,” “fat” and worse. The white supremacist who killed 11 people in a Jewish synagogue last Saturday was egged into violent action by Trump’s ridiculous and hateful caravan rhetoric.

The Trump Lie Machine is going into head-spinning and soul-numbing overdrive as the midterm elections draw closer.

Trump claimed earlier this year that leftist violence will break out across the country if Democrats reclaim Congress in the upcoming midterm elections. The absurdity speaks for itself.

Trump said in Arizona recently that immigrants had illegally taken over a city council in California. The claim was complete nonsense.

Trump has recently and insanely suggested that people are “rioting” in California “to get out of Sanctuary Cities. …They’re demanding to be released from sanctuary cities.” (This may be the single craziest thing I’ve ever seen Trump claim. It is truly bizarre.)

Trump is ridiculously claiming the Democrats will kick seniors off health insurance, abolish insurance protections for people with health problems, destroy Social Security, abolish U.S. borders and (I am not making this up) give “illegal” immigrants “free cars.” That’s right: “free cars” for “illegals.”

Trump repeatedly—36 times across seven political speeches this fall—called the Democrats “radicals.” Of course, the Democrats are a deeply conservative, Big Business-friendly, imperial/pro-military, and depressingly centrist apparatus. There isn’t a single genuine radical in their entire party.

Trump says that the “new platform of the supposedly ‘radical’ Democrats is to abolish ICE” (Immigrations and Customs Enforcement). That is flatly false.

Trump lies and distorts so relentlessly and profusely that tracking and fact-checking his false statements has become a full-time job for journalists at home and abroad.

One of these journalists is Daniel Dale, the Washington bureau chief of the Toronto Star. He calculates that Lyin’ Don has made four false claims per day since being sworn into the presidency 21 months ago with his hand on the Bible.

When Dale was first assigned the Trump beat in September 2016, he found the Republican candidate “so incessantly dishonest” that his habit of twisting and inverting reality required a specific focus “separate from the day-to-day news coverage I was doing.” Dale looked forward to being “freed from this [ugly] task” of covering Trump’s persistent untruths once Hillary Clinton prevailed, as was widely expected. Trump won “and so, [he] had to continue.”

What accounts for this endless mendacity and rhetorical manipulation? Speaking to “Public” Broadcasting System “NewsHour” anchor and Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) member Judy Woodruff last week, Dale theorized that Trump and the Republican allies and outlets who repeat his outlandish and bogus assertions want to drive media coverage and political discourse away from topics they wish to avoid—health care, the Mueller investigation and “anything else the president doesn’t want us to talk about,” such as Trump’s still unreleased tax returns, climate change and the party’s regressive tax cuts.

Dale is on to something there, no doubt, but the real meaning of the president’s Twitter-amplified Fibby Pulpit is deeper and darker than mere diversion and partisan spin. As Chris Hedges suggests in his latest book, “America: The Farewell Tour,” Trump and his party’s continuing defiance of reality suggests that the United States is sliding into “corporate totalitarianism”:

Trump and the Republican Party represent the last stage in the emergence of corporate totalitarianism. Pillage and oppression are intensified by the permanent lie. The permanent lie is different from the falsehoods and half-truths uttered by politicians like Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama. The common political lie these politicians employed was not designed to cancel out reality. It was a form of manipulation. … But Clinton did not pretend that NAFTA was beneficial to the working class when reality proved otherwise. Bush did not pretend that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction once none were found.

The permanent lie is not circumscribed by reality. It is perpetuated even in the face of overwhelming evidence that discredits it. It is irrational. Those who speak in the language of truth and fact are attacked as liars, traitors and purveyors of ‘fake news.’ They are banished from the public sphere once totalitarian elites accrue sufficient power, a power now granted them with the revoking of net neutrality. … “The result of a consistent and total substitution of lies for factual truth is not that the lie will now be accepted as truth and truth be defamed as a lie, but that the sense by which we take our bearings in the real world – and the category of truth versus falsehood is among the mental means to this end – is being destroyed,” Hanna Arendt wrote in The Origins of Totalitarianism. …

The permanent lie turns political discourse into absurdist theater. … Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin claims he has a report that proves the tax cuts will pay for themselves and will not increase the deficit – only there never was a report. … The permanent lie is the apotheosis of totalitarianism. It no longer matters what is true. … When reality is replaced by the whims of opinion and expediency, what is true one day becomes false the next. Consistency is discarded. Complexity, nuance, and depth and profundity are replaced with the simpleton’s faith in threats and force.

Consistency is discarded. The Trump administration has cited “states’ rights” in trying to roll back federal requirements that out-of-date coal and nuclear plants be shut down, even as it endeavors to federally negate the state of California’s right to enforce comparatively stringent emission regulations.

Republican Congressional candidates run campaign commercials proclaiming their commitment to retaining the Affordable Care Act’s provision prohibiting health insurance companies from discriminating against people with pre-existing conditions at the same time that the GOP is viciously challengingthat provision in court.

Trump blames the nation’s bourgeois media and a timid, centrist Democratic Party for the hatred, incivility and demonization that pollute U.S. politics while he calls his opponents “evil” and celebrates violence against liberals and journalists.

It is important to understand, as Hedges does, that the Trump-led assault on veracity, evidence and our very ability to separate truth from falsehood has been able to gain traction only because a decades-long corporate coup has devastated and discredited public education, academia, organized labor and the legal and criminal justice systems. It has done all this and more while turning the Democratic Party into what the late Princeton political scientist Sheldon Wolin called the nation’s Inauthentic Opposition.

Think of this distinctively American “corporate-managed democracy” and “inverted totalitarianism” as the nation’s pre-existing authoritarian condition for the rise of an Amerikaner-style fascism.

In the face of what an authoritarian like Trump and his white-nationalist Republican Party have done over the last two years of one-party rule—an annulment of what’s left of the U.S. Constitution’s much-ballyhooed “checks and balances”—there’s no credible moral argument against the notion that progressives living in contested districts should choose the lesser of two evils in next week’s midterm elections. Adolph Reed Jr., Noam Chomsky and Arun Gupta’s warnings about the dangers of a Trump presidency have been richly born out. I, for one, should have paid them more heed.

Still, we on the left, what’s left of it, should nonetheless retain our capacity to be properly nauseated by a yard sign I recently saw in arch-liberal, super-blue Iowa City, Iowa. Surrounded by other, smaller signs with the names of a handful of dismal local and statewide Democratic candidates, it read “MAKE AMERICA GOOD AGAIN: Vote.”

Please. The notion that the richly bipartisan corporate totalitarianism of which Trump is the apotheosis can be reversed, and the nation made “good” simply by voting Herr Donald and the Republicans out of office is a childish fantasy.

That, too, is a Great Lie. As marchers celebrating a rare legal victory over a white supremacist U.S. police state in Democratically controlled Chicago chanted last month, “The whole damn system is guilty as Hell.” It’s the whole damn system that must be democratized from the bottom up. From the dismal dollar Democrats, The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN, MSNBC, “P”BS, Tom Steyer, the Gates Foundation, the Brookings Institution, the CFR, the Atlantic Council, the Obama and Clintons on the so-called left, to the radically reactionary Republicans, the Koch brothers, the Mercers, the Heritage Foundation, the American Enterprise Institute, Fox News, the Weekly Standard, the Hudson Institute, the Hoover Institution, and the American Legislative Exchange Council, Breitbart, right-wing talk radio, the Sinclair Broadcasting Co., the Federalist Society and more on the actual right, imperialism, racial inequality and class rule have brought us to this menacing pre-fascist moment.

‘S.N.L.’ Welcomes Adam Sandler Back and (Mostly) Avoids Politics

Was Opera Man there? Of course Opera Man was there.

It was Adam Sandler’s first time hosting “Saturday Night Live” since he unceremoniously departed the show nearly a quarter-century ago, so naturally he brought back some of his best-loved characters from the mid-90s era when he shared the “S.N.L.” stage with David Spade, Mike Myers, Molly Shannon and others.

Sandler also drew out some other celebrated “S.N.L.” alums to pop up throughout this weekend’s broadcast, which also featured the musical guest Shawn Mendes. But more crucially, Sandler’s presence seemed to inspire the current cast and creative team to dig deeply for material that matched their host’s stature and impish spirit — if nothing else, “S.N.L.” largely set aside its divisive political pantomimes in favor of more absurdist sketches, and ended on a surprisingly touching note.

But first, Sandler had to account for how his “S.N.L.” tenure had ended in 1995. As he said in his monologue, he was 23 years old when he joined the show, his cast mates David Spade and Rob Schneider were 25 and “Norm Macdonald was maybe 60.” He said that he lost his virginity “to a woman in this very studio — I don’t kiss and tell but it was the Church Lady,” adding, “She said I was special.”

Then, explaining his exit from the program, Sandler began to sing:

I was fired, I was fired, I was fired, so sad to tell Well I never saw it coming I got fired from “S.N.L.”

In another verse, he explained:

I got fired, not rehired Well it made me sad and blue I told my boy Chris Farley I got fired And he said, “Sandman, they fired my [expletive], too”

Chris Rock, a friend of Sandler’s and former “S.N.L.” cast member, turned up to contribute a verse of his own. He sang:

I got fired, I was fired, I was fired by NBC. Then I went on “In Living Color” Three weeks later, they took it off TV

Pete Davidson, a current “S.N.L.” performer, also started to sing about being fired from the show, but Sandler told him he hadn’t been let go. “I wasn’t?” Davidson asked. “How is that even possible?” Sandler replied, “I don’t know, but be patient because it’s coming soon.”

Then Sandler sang his closing verse:

I was fired, I was fired NBC said that I was done Then I made over $4 billion at the box office So I guess you could say I won

Impersonation Smorgasbord of the Week

As has often been the case this season, the opening sketch seemed at first to promise a comedic re-enactment of a recent political event. But no — as an exhausted narrator explained, Attorney General William P. Barr pulled out of a hearing before the House Judiciary Committee and then, the voice-over continued, “the Democrats chose to do some light prop comedy with a bucket of chicken. The whole thing was so depressing that we’d rather focus on the two things all Americans can get behind: ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Avengers.’”

That set up a “Family Feud” parody featuring the “S.N.L.” cast as characters from “Game of Thrones” (including Kate McKinnon as Brienne of Tarth; Melissa Villaseñor as Arya Stark) and “Avengers: Endgame” (Beck Bennett as Thanos; Leslie Jones as a comically miscast Groot). But of course the best lines went to Kenan Thompson as the host Steve Harvey, who repeatedly mocked both teams and their media franchises: “Let’s start with the Avengers,” he said at the outset, “because this show is just like their movies. We’re going to open with 45 minutes of introductions.”

Fake Ad of the Week

Sandler turned in a memorably deadpan performance as Joe Romano, the proprietor of Romano Tours, a company offering vacations in Italy to customers who come from all over “but mostly Long Island and Jersey.” Yet as the commercial went on, Sandler made clear he was addressing a certain kind of clientele: “People love us,” he said, “but every so often a customer leaves a review that they were disappointed or didn’t have as much fun as they thought. So here at Romano Tours, we always remind our customers: If you’re sad now, you might still feel sad there, O.K.?”

As he went on to painstakingly explain, with onscreen graphics and client testimonials, Sandler said, “Remember you’re still going to be you, on vacation. If you are sad where you are, and then you get on a plane to Italy, you, in Italy, will be the same sad you from before. Just in a new place. Does that make sense?”

Family Reunion of the Week

The celebrity family reunion sketch is a format that “S.N.L.” has used before, with hosts like Christopher Walken and Jim Carrey, but it seemed especially suited for Sandler, allowing the host to play straight man while the current cast served his characters and mannerisms back to him. That roster included Melissa Villaseñor paying homage to Sandler’s title character from “The Waterboy” and Pete Davidson as “Little Nicky,” as well as guest appearances from Jimmy Fallon and Kristen Wiig.

‘Weekend Update’ Character of the Week

Kate McKinnon reprised her recurring role as Elizabeth Warren, appearing at the “Weekend Update” desk to ask why her policy proposals aren’t getting more traction as the race for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination heats up. “I’m over here, working ’round the clock to give you free college,” McKinnon said. “But oh, look-ee there — Beto O’Dork did parkour in a Starbucks. Wow. Whoops, I just figured out universal pre-K but what’s that over there — Mayor Pete Bu-Judge Judy-Jute’s playing piano and speaking fluent Klingon.”

Opera Man Medley of the Week

Yes, Sandler did previously put on the wig and cape of Opera Man, his grandiose “Weekend Update” vocalist, for the “S.N.L.” 40th anniversary special that aired in 2015. But we’ll regard this segment as his true return to the character, when he finally got to croon about President Trump, “Game of Thrones” and the prospects for the 2020 election. Farley died from a drug overdose in 1997, at the age of 33, and a screen behind Sandler showed candid photos and videos of Farley from throughout his life, as well as some of his memorable “S.N.L.” performances, while the host sang about him in a balladeering, Springsteen mode:

A high-profile U.S. Congresswoman touring detention facilities of the U.S. Border Patrol agency called conditions “horrifying”.

Migrants held at a border patrol station in Texas were subjected to psychological abuse and told to drink out of toilets, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (New York) said after a visit with members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus to the main border patrol facility in El Paso.

“After I forced myself into a cell with women and began speaking to them, one of them described their treatment at the hands of officers as “psychological warfare,” Ocasio-Cortez, wrote on Twitter after leaving the El Paso border patrol station. “This has been horrifying so far.”

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), which oversees Border Patrol, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on her statements about the visit.

The Border Patrol also came under fire on Monday following a report that offensive content had been posted on a private Facebook group for current and former CBP officers. Posts included jokes about the deaths of migrants and sexually explicit comments referencing Ocasio-Cortez. The Facebook group had 9,500 members.

Conditions at U.S. facilities holding migrants along the U.S.-Mexico border have become a flashpoint since an internal government watchdog warned of “dangerous overcrowding” at the El Paso facility in May.

In June, immigration lawyers raised alarms over squalid conditions facing hundreds of children at another facility in Clint, Texas. The lawmakers visited both Texas facilities on Monday.

U.S. President Donald Trump has made cracking down on illegal immigration a centerpiece of his administration. Border apprehensions topped 132,000 in May, their highest levels in more than a decade.

During the legislators’ visit Monday, Congresswoman Judy Chu, a California Democrat, spoke emotionally about what she saw.

“I will never forget the image of being in a cell and seeing 15 women, tears coming down heir faces as they talked about being separated from their children, about having no running water, and about not being able to know when they were going to get out since they had already been there 50 days.”

She added, “A woman talked about being an epileptic and not having access to any medicine.”

More than half of the 756 immigrants being held at the El Paso facility were kept outside, and those inside were in cells packed at five times their capacity.

Border Patrol agents “remained armed in the holding areas because of their concerns with the overcrowding that potentially could result in volatile situations,” the documents revealed.

Posts included jokes about the deaths of migrants and sexually explicit comments referencing Ocasio-Cortez, the news outlet said.

Reuters did not independently confirm the report.

“This isn’t about ‘a few bad eggs,'” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted in response to the ProPublica report. “This is a violent culture.”

CBP condemned the Facebook group and acknowledged that it may include a number of the agency’s employees.

Matthew Klein, Assistant Commissioner of CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility, called the social media activity “disturbing” and said it violated the agency’s code of conduct.

Klein said the matter had been referred to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) inspector general, which has jurisdiction over the CBP.

According to a screen shot published by ProPublica, the Facebook group had 9,500 members.

“These posts are completely inappropriate and contrary to the honor and integrity I see – and expect – from our agents day in and day out,” U.S. Border Patrol Chief Carla Provost said in a statement.

“Any employees found to have violated our standards of conduct will be held accountable.”

‘DANGEROUS OVERCROWDING’

In June, immigration lawyers raised alarms over squalid conditions facing hundreds of children at another facility in Clint, Texas. The lawmakers visited both Texas facilities on Monday.

U.S. President Donald Trump has made cracking down on illegal immigration a centerpiece of his administration, but officials say a renewed crush of mostly Central Americans arriving at the border has strained resources.

Border apprehensions topped 132,000 in May, their highest levels in more than a decade.

During the legislators’ visit Monday, Congresswoman Judy Chu, a California Democrat, spoke emotionally about what she saw.

She added, “A woman talked about being an epileptic and not having access to any medicine.”

The Trump administration, criticized for a policy of family separation last year, says it now separates children from parents and legal guardians only if there is some perceived risk to the child.

It has given few details on the criteria for those decisions.

Border Patrol agents have expressed their own concerns about conditions at facilities, according to documents published Monday from the DHS Inspector General that supported the watchdog’s May report.

The documents revealed U.S. agents feared riots by migrants being held in overcrowded and unsanitary cells and were “embarrassed” and “frustrated” by the detainees’ conditions at El Paso.

The documents were obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request from website MuckRock and first reported by NBC News on Monday.

They showed DHS inspectors had found on a May 7 that more than half of the 756 immigrants being held at the El Paso facility were kept outside, and those inside were in cells packed at five times their capacity.

Border Patrol agents “remained armed in the holding areas because of their concerns with the overcrowding that potentially could result in volatile situations,” the documents revealed.

Government inspectors saw migrants standing on toilets because there was not enough room in cells and other examples of unsanitary conditions leading to concerns about illness among the agents, the documents said.

CBP did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the documents.

The U.S. government responded to the report in a letter to the watchdog included in the supporting documents.

The situation “represents an acute and worsening crisis” and the surging numbers of migrants were overwhelming the agencies, the letter said.

MORALE PROBLEMS

U.S. Border Patrol agents complain of being understaffed and overwhelmed with the surge of families at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The agency has about 19,000 agents nationwide, less than the roughly 21,500 agents it is authorized to have. Border Patrol officials say the agency recruits non-stop but cannot get the numbers of recruits it needs.

In May, Provost said agents now spend at least 40 percent of their time as “child care professionals, medical caregivers, bus drivers, and food service workers,” rather doing the law enforcement jobs they were trained for.

That has brought morale problems in hard-hit sectors such as El Paso, media say. One unnamed agent told El Paso TV station KVIA that officers’ jobs had been reduced to “babysitting” migrants while smugglers exploited their absence on the border.

16 Amazing Black Men and Their Advice for Young Students

Father’s Day is a day to celebrate all the wonderful fathers in the world. However, for Black people, Father’s Day has too often turned into a day to discuss all the dysfunction with Black men—especially a lack of Black fathers.

President Obama, Bill Cosby and other Black leaders often preach and lecture about the “brokenness” of Black male fathers and role models. (The irony of Bill Cosby morally shaming people is not lost on me.)

This Father’s Day, I want to send a message of encouragement to Black students, especially our Black boys in schools. I want to show them—and all of us—the people we might not see every day—the many successful Black men who aren’t only athletes, actors or rappers.

These 16 brothers—some fathers, husbands, community leaders and all amazing Black men that I love and respect—shared inspiring advice they would give to young Black students.

Brian Dawson, Sales Associate

Brian Dawson is my husband and the father of our two daughters. He’s a great salesperson and a graduate of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign with a bachelor’s in journalism.

Advice: “Try and look for mentors. When you have an idea, see if it’s been done before and replicate it. Don’t waste valuable time reinventing the wheel.”

Courtney Jarvis, Ph.D. in Immunology

Courtney Jarvis is my brother, and he grew up in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood. He received his bachelor’s, master’s and—as of this year—his doctorate in immunology and infectious disease from Texas Tech University.

Advice: “This may sound cliche, but make sure that you practice delayed gratification. When making decisions, think about your future self, and do the thing that is most beneficial to you in the future—not just what feels good right now.”

Anthony Clark, Special Education Teacher and Community Activist

Raised in a working-class family in Oak Park, Illinois, Anthony Clark is a military veteran, high school special education teacher and active community organizer. In the summer of 2016, Anthony founded the Suburban Unity Alliance, an organization dedicated to combating discrimination by raising awareness and bringing communities together based on common interests and community goals. He believes it’s time this country lives up to its promise of liberty and justice for all.

Advice: “In the words of the great Muhammad Ali, ‘service to others is the rent you pay on this Earth.’ What good is it if you have the nicest car imaginable, if all the roads are broken and no one can travel? Live your life uplifting those around you.”

Aquil Charlton, DJ and Lead Vocalist for Animate Objects

A skilled DJ and electronic musician, Aquil “AyQue” Charlton uses his creative agility to reach a wide range of audiences. He raps over his own live production, and has backed Open Mike Eagle on synthesizers. As a vocalist and songwriter with hip-hop/soul band Animate Objects he has also opened for Lauryn Hill, Dilated Peoples, The Wailers, Mint Condition, Chingy, Kardinal Offishall and others.

Offstage, Aquil is all about the social good. He has toured and taught internationally with the U.S. Department of State Cultural Affairs Division and OneBeat Program. In Chicago, he has taught music through After School Matters, Chicago Arts Partnerships in Education and Urban Gateways. Aquil is currently Program Director at Notes for Notes, a free music studio for youth, and directs the New Music Ensemble with Chicago Public Schools All City Arts program. He also leads pop-up events such as the “Mobile Music Box,” in which he rides his bicycle throughout Chicago, hosting public music studio and instrument-making activities. Currently, he is preparing to release new hip-hop projects while raising a 3-year-old genius.

Advice: “Trust your instincts and embrace your culture. Resist the urge to abandon your integrity for the sake of temporary gain. The long game is worth so much more to you and the resilience necessary to achieve it will be your new superpower.”

Carnell Griffin, Entrepreneur and Principal Interior Designer

Carnell Griffin is an interior designer and entrepreneur.

Advice: “As a Black person seeking more knowledge in the world, knowing how much external wisdom and advice to apply and digest into your personal narrative will be the biggest test. Here are three tips to remember: 1) Shut up: You’re not as smart as you will be. 2) Put your money to work: You will and can live a debt-free life, with a multitude of financial streams depositing to you. 3) Get you some Jesus: All of the supernatural portions of life that non-believers speak of—‘have faith it will work,’ ‘just believe in yourself,’ ‘good things come to those who [blank]’—will never unlock their full weight until you get Jesus in your soul.”

Christian Harris, Entrepreneur and Civic Leader

Christian Harris is a lifelong Oak Park resident and a graduate of Bradley University. For the last five years he has been co-owner of MaidPro, a cleaning service with over 150 clients and 13 employees. Christian has a strong dedication to his community and is on the executive board of the Oak Park River Forest Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. He was elected to the Oak Park Library Board in 2017 and serves as its finance officer, overseeing a budget of $8 million. He also sits on the Young Professionals Board of H.O.M.E. (Housing Opportunities and Maintenance for the Elderly) in Chicago, which works towards affordable housing for low-income seniors. In his free time, he tutors children in Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood, helps future entrepreneurs develop their business plans, and watches Chicago sports with his high school buddies.

Advice: “Find time to do something you like every day. Even if it’s only for five minutes or less. In your life you will have to do many things that you are not passionate about or don’t like—such as school, taking out the trash or eventually a job. However, the things you are passionate about will keep you going and remind you that life is about happiness.”

Credell Walls, Civic, Nonprofit and Environmental Leader

Credell Walls spent more than 15 years of his career implementing nature-based youth development programs with the Jane Goodall Institute-USA and the Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance. Currently, he continues connecting people to the environment with the Forest Preserves of Cook County as the community engagement specialist. He holds a bachelor’s from DePaul University in nonprofit management and will finish his master’s in biology from Miami University of Ohio in December 2018. He has presented on radio and on stage with the world-renowned primatologist and United Nations Ambassador, Dr. Jane Goodall. In his spare time, he enjoys performing sketch comedy, going to the movies and being with his wife and their adorable 14-month-old.

Advice: “Never give in to peer pressure, even if you’re afraid. Being different is a gift, so embrace it. That’s what makes you special. Although you might go through some bad days, wait it out for the good days and then be prepared to do it again and again. Take this moment in your life to watch people and choose the parts of them you like to add to what you know. Learn from everyone so there is no need to feel jealous. Pick your battles. It’s great to stand up for yourself, just know when and how to do it.”

Eugene Bush, Filmmaker

Eugene Bush is a producer and director and the owner of E-Tre Productions. He has over 10 years of project planning and implementation experience in a variety of areas including finance, accounting, database and web development, programming, networking, automation and customer support. He runs a video production business full-time but still finds time to manage IT-related projects.

Advice: “Do your best to create with what you have around you. Don’t wait for the better actor, for the better equipment, for the better money, for the better location. Progression beats perfection every time. You will find once you begin completing projects even with the limited resources you have the universe begins to line up to send you the resources that you need. Furthermore, experience is the best teacher. So once you begin completing projects, you’ll learn exactly what you need to do to make the next project better. Don’t fall into the trap of, ‘Once I know everything then I’ll move on.’ You’ll never know everything. Lastly, don’t worry about the critics and haters. They are going to hate because that’s their job. Your job is to produce and prosper. Be blessed.”

Henry Thomas III, Career Military

Henry Thomas grew up on the South Side of Chicago and had two wonderful and resourceful parents, Judy Dotson and Henry Thomas. Because of his life changing childhood experiences at Fred A. Grow Memorial Camp in Wisconsin, he realized the world was much more than his South Side community. He graduated from Hyde Park Career Academy and has spent over 20 years in the United States Air Force. Today he lives in southern Illinois with his wife and two college-age young adults.

Advice: “In order to get to where you want to be in life, you will need to step out of your comfort zone and work hard. Your future is out there; go and put your name on it. This is especially paramount for children of color. Never judge a book by its cover. That dirty mechanic, that dirty garbage man, may have a lot on the ball. I am one of those dirty guys.”

Dr. Fred Bonner, Expert in Black Male Achievement

Dr. Fred Bonner is a professor and endowed chair in educational leadership and consulting at Prairie View A & M University, where he directs the MACH-III Center for the advancement of minority populations in education, from preschool through college. He is a leading expert on educating African-American males. Previously he held the Samuel DeWitt Proctor Endowed Chair in Education at Rutgers Graduate School of Education, where he spearheaded creation of the Black Male Summit and the HBCU Deans Think Tank.

Advice: “For all students, the first step is to believe that you can be a ‘scholar’—to develop what a professor by the name of Gilman Whiting calls a ‘scholar identity.’ When you are in school, start all of your words, believing, knowing and saying, ‘I am a scholar!’”

John Norman: Oilman, Athlete and Coach

A native of Midland, Texas, John had a stellar football career through college and the NFL. He now owns two businesses. By day, he works as a contract lease operator in the oilfields of Midland and by night, he serves as an athletic trainer for kids of all ages. He is husband to Denise and a father of three.

Advice: “This is what my father, the greatest role model of my life, Jerry L. Norman, taught me: ‘There’s not wrong in right, and there’s no right in wrong.’”

Karl Nero, Pilot and Pastor

Karl Nero grew up in Chicago’s Roseland neighborhood. He graduated as salutatorian from St. Francis De Sales High School and went on to earn a bachelor’s in aviation human factors from the University of Illinois. He’s an airline pilot, flight instructor and an associate pastor in Chicago. He recently graduated from Moody Theological Seminary with a master’s in Biblical Studies. He and his wife of 15 years, Melanie, live with their three children in Chicago’s southwest suburbs.

Advice: “Do the right thing; don’t do the wrong thing. Don’t think White folks are smarter because they have a different skin tone. God created me and you with the same ability to learn and excel, so strive for excellence.”

Keith Lewis, Nonprofit and Community Leader

Keith Lewis is a firm believer that you have to be an active part of the change that you want to see happen and has followed this mantra throughout his professional career. A native of Muskegon, Michigan, Keith has 20 years of experience with community-based organizations, educational and government institutions. He currently serves as director of programs for Heartland Alliance READI Chicago, an initiative geared toward individuals most at risk for gun violence. Formerly, as director of community engagement for the United Way of Metropolitan Chicago, Lewis led an initiative to improve education, financial stability and health in 10 communities, involving over 300 partner agencies.

In 2014, the Obama White House selected Keith to provide recommendations and insights to the “My Brother’s Keepers” initiative aimed to augment the Black and Latino male achievement gap. Coupled with this, he is an advocate for fathers’ rights and served as an advisor and facilitator for Fathers, Families and Health Communities, a Chicago-based nonprofit organization that serves low-income, non-custodial fathers. Keith earned a master’s in public administration from Governors State University and a bachelor’s in materials and logistics management from Michigan State University. In his spare time, he loves listening to music, playing fantasy football, reading, watching indie films and spending time with his wife and three children.

Advice: “My words of advice to students of color are to openly pursue inserting themselves into places and spaces where they may feel like an outsider or an ‘other.’ However, continue to be their authentic selves; express and speak truth to power and do not compromise their values and integrity. Be intentional and intentful on learning from all, recognizing there is wisdom and lessons to be learned from those with Ph.D.s and those with no degrees.”

Larry Dawson Jr., Public Servant

Larry earned both bachelor’s and a master’s degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Most of his career has been spent in government helping people in need, from the elderly, to the unemployed, to families needing their homes to be healthier and more energy efficient. Larry lives in Chicago with his wife and son. When he’s not working, he’s learning new things and pushing himself beyond his comfort zone.

Advice: “Put maximum effort into STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) subjects because that’s what the good-paying jobs of the future will require. Surround yourself with friends who want just as much from life as you. Set goals that seem a little beyond your reach and make a plan. Hold your friends accountable for working toward their goals and ask that they do the same for you. Keep your word. Be honest. Act confident even when you’re terrified. Always try to learn something new. Talk to people who are different than you. Be persistent. Be prepared. Be on time. Don’t let previous failures or mistakes stop you. Learn from them and move on. Failing is the way we learn how to succeed.”

Randall Johnson, Flight Attendant, Worship Leader and Vocal Coach

Randall Johnson was born in Detroit and raised in Las Vegas by his loving grandparents, who stepped in when his mother died and his father was struggling with addiction. As a performer, Randall travels the country.

Randall is the father of one. As an artist, Randall has a fan base of over 10,000 via his Instagram handle, @r_davon. He travels the country singing at major venues and theaters. Randall was a featured vocalist on the Las Vegas Strip’s House of Blues and was featured on the Impact Network’s “Dr. Bobby Jones Presents” show.

Randall is also a worship leader, vocal coach and flight attendant for Spirit Airlines.

Advice: “You have the strength and power to achieve greatness. Don’t allow fear and doubt to deter you away from your goals. Keep trying no matter how many times you hear no. All you need is one yes. Keep working until you find your yes. Once you make it to the position you want to be in, then reach back and be that yes to someone else.”

MacArthur Antigua, Civic Engagement Director

MacArthur was born in Shorewood, Wisconsin, and raised in Palos Hills, Illinois. He earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in communications from Northwestern University. His personal mission is to cultivate his artistry and share his genius to build a joyful, just and enlightened society. He is the father of two daughters, Meera (age 10) and Leela (age 12).

Advice: “If you really want something, then give yourself permission to go for it. There are hundreds of reasons why you may not get that thing, but don’t let your lack of effort be on that list. This is especially hard when you haven’t seen people in your family, or people who look like you hold that role, but you’re worth trying. You’re more than worth the attempt. And there will be others like you who see you try, and they may not show it, but you’ve inspired them.”
